Completed some dove scouting today. This is the worst drought I have ever seen in my 62 years of scouting. There is zero water in creeks and ponds and potholes. Zero. Flow in Skunk and Iowa rivers is near zero. No flooding of places like Otter creek can take place with that low of flow. And from the drought maps south of Iowa it is worse. It would take weeks of rain to get anything built up. If you got water be really thankful. Any public area with water will be inundated with hunters. Like I said earlier, this is the year to take that trip to Canada and save the money you would spend hunting in Iowa Maybe I could lease a sewage treatment pond. What bad luck. We have a great hatch up north and no water from Iowa clear down the La. Bummer.

Here the dates be fella’s! There are a couple minor changes to this years reg’s you may want to look at. It’s getting closer…….39 days to be exact! I can’t wait! The cooler nights and mornings have really got the itch coming on. I had better find some good time to get some more work done on the rig here sooner than later. I need to lay off of the camping and stay at home working on the boat. Exciting year ahead….new boat, and a new dog. Let’s let the fun begin (providing we have water)!! JB

There has been a huge push of Pelicans over the last couple of days! I have witnessed thoudsands of them in the air and on bigger puddles by Runnells. The overlook there is 100% dry with not a drop of moisture in that area.

There’s been a push of bluewings since last Wed. Maybe on last nights cold front? Millet is doing well but didn’t get the rain I got at home last night.

The past 2 days we had about a 20 to 30 minute down poor in some spots….Enough to tease me, hopefully Good things to come with the weather trying to hit anywhere below 90 and more chances of rain keep popping up in the forecast. Can only hope

Help/Info. 07-24-2012 07:30

Well fellas, this dry spell sure doesn’t look to be getting better here anytime soon! I sure hope I’m wrong. Here in Central Iowa we may be in some real trouble for those of us who typiclly hang out on the public marshes. I honestly dont think we will have enough water to even run my mud motor. We may be limited to the bigger bodies of water around here. My only concern there will be lack of cover on the lakes. Is there anyone in the Council Bluffs area that hunts “The Big River”?? Honestly, I have never hunted either of the big rivers and I hear it can be a bit intimidating being on that big of water and not knowing where to go. I am not looking for you to tell me where your spot is I am more looking for info like where I put my boat in, which direction to head, what kind of things to look for etc. Anybody that does hunt over in that area that could pass on some information it wuld sure be helpful.

Unless something drastic happens, there’s not going to be any water to pump. Waterfowl do like vegetation, but all I see is cattails and some water lilies. I’m sure other marshes have better vegetation, at least hope so.

checked a few public marshes this past week……..as usual the water was dropped so the vegitation can grow. If its anything like last year we will again have no boatable water in the areas without the ability to pump it from a larger resource. Waterfowl love vegitation…….but they love water more! Sometimes I just don’t understand our DNR’s methods.

I was at one of the marshes we hunt late last week – water level was down at least 12″ in last 3 weeks, maybe more, closer to 18″. Frankly, the lowest for this time of year that I can remember. Weatherman said last week that this dryer than normal is forecast through October. If so, that is some serious bad news.

The only water that might be around is where they pump it for the refuges, you know, where you cant hunt.Yeah we might get them little jets by the 3rd zone lol.Not looking good so far……

I have been repainting the faded lids on the boat blind
Put in new plugs in the outboard, cut off some of the old grass and cedar branches, and bought a new prop. I got the old prop rebuilt.

Usualy is this time of year. Actualy I dont know if it is slower now or when there is a good push of birds on! Usualy when people on here quit talking from Sept-Dec that means there are birds here and they do not want others to know!

I saw my first hatch of the spring yesterday! Gander goose was a bit on the protective side! Just purcahsed a bigger boat last weekend. Now the fun part comes……..modifying my blind to fit a longer/wider boat! The training of my pup is still coming along great! She is making huge strides to becoming a great waterfowl dog! I am very pleased with her progress! Not a lot going on for this off season post! Gearing up for a summer of camping and fishing the rivers of Central Iowa! JB

Thanks for the info Bill. I have 2 parties interested but if I don’t hear anything by early next week I’ll just post everything in a PM. Not the greatest stuff but great for the money and I’ve killed a lot of geese with this setup. Good starter setup. I enjoy reading your posts. Thanks. Howard
