Mallards 12-31-2012 15:03

Hunted Southern Iowa yesterday and now snow on ground there. Saw several big flocks of mallards. From about Hwy 34 South in Iowa it is snow free in the fields unless today’s snow is cover some of it up. It will take a several inches on ground and cold temps (which are here this week) before they will leave there!

Found duck count on KC star outdoor page.Date was 12-27.Over 400,000 ducks, mostly mallards were on the conservation areas in the state, counted some seven areas. You should be seeing mallard soon, having snow as of now here in Missouri, expecting 1=3 inches by tonight.Hope this gets the birds moving south, although this snow is coming in from the south.

John: If you look at Outdoors on KCS, and look at ‘hunting reports’ from last Thursday’s article, you will see amount of ducks different areas are holding.

Very confused. Thought will all the snow cover Mallards would have been all over us here in Ark. We have tons of Pintails and Gadwalls but not many Mallards.

Any idea where they’re at?

Cloudy, High Winds – –
Today was my last day for this season on ducks. The weather people sure missed this call.Had 3 inches at our place instead of a inch or less, winds at 25MPH gusting to 40-50MPH.Ended up with 3 inches of snow.a constant wind of 40-50 mph, snow came down side ways, temps dropped from shooting time to 20 degrees when we pulled out.Had heater on in blind, ended up with 3 mallards and a bluebill.Holly,my lab made three retrieves in the water, after 3rd,even with her vest on and being in the blind by the heat, she still was shaking from the cold, she already has a arthritis problem in one hip,so she and I left.Drive home to Columbia is a normal 1 hour plus drive. Today, almost 3 hours due to blowing snow, icy hiway 24 and hiway 63, many cars in the ditch on 63,a tractor-trailer overturned. In my 60 years of hunting of ducks, this was the worst weather I have ever hunted in,shot up almost a box of shells for one drake, impossible to know what kind of lead to put on the birds due to the high winds.Holly, did not eat when I got home, she is still sleeping on her bed. This was the end of 2012,hope God gives me another year in 2013.To all members and their families Merry Christmas and have a safe holiday.Plan to go back in January for the snows..

Tuesday this week was a nice day for a boat ride and since the intent was scouting, not hunting, having a warm day was fine.

Did find several good looking sand bars and plan to hunt this Friday. Hopefully todays snow and and cold won’t push all the ducks South.

Got DU e-mail yesterday. To no one’s surprise, they show 750,000 mallards and some 300,000 canada geese in eastern S. Dak.Temps in the 40’s and open water and plenty of food in the fields..Another shot from mother nature this year. Our season closes here in the North zone on 12-25.Doubt if any weather bad enough to move the birds south,as reported and as we know, the birds can take the cold, only thing that will make them move is a heavy snow to cover the food supply and I don’t see this happening in the near future.Enjoy the holidays with your loved ones, have my oldest daughter to make my year complete, two bouts with cancer since 2010,last mri and cat scan shows no cancer present, and I worry about the number of birds I shot this year. Will enjoy this Christmas more than the last two and have much to be thankful for.If by chance,I have any future reports on the goose season, which closes in our zone on 1-31 for the canada geese, will post, otherwise hope I have another year in 2013.

Good day all well here is a little report from the south. Opening day was amazing with a 3 man limit of mallards and teal had several groups of specks working and should have killed a few but you all know how it goes just trying to get all of them in the hole and it never works out like that. All in all the opener was great had large groups of mallards working and lots of specks working. The next two days however where a bust killed 3 birds each day we went from seeing several thousand ducks and specks opening morning to seeing maybe 100 ducks over the next two days. Not positive on what has happened other than it has totally shut off. Out of the 3 MDC areas down here only one is doing fairly well the others are just dragging along at the moment.I have mixed reports from others on their season so far some are reporting limits nearly every day others are not even coming close seems to be the further west you are in SEMO the better the reports. With one exception around the MO/TN line in the river sounds like the boys in that area are doing fairly well. Long term forecast looks good for us about the second week of Dec for a big push if it holds true however we all know how that goes. Anyway gona spend the rest of the week hunting and scouting will report later in the week. Hope all is well with everyone and a belated Turkey Day to all

hate to hear all that John!
However, I would have thought the owner/operator would have thank you. Where I come from, Alcohol & Guns is a deadly situation. You may have saved someones life.

I have been in the same situation. Only takes a few Loud Mouth Drunks to ruin a Club. Also, this is not the situation to have kids & grand kids.

What you went through is exactly why I stopped joining Clubs.
Your better off w/out them.

Good Weekend

Had a friend and work acquaintance here from Utah on Friday for a one day hunt and the weather and birds really cooperated. We hunted from about 10am-3pm and shot 4 man limit of mallards and others. Sun, Wind and Cold really makes all the difference in birds working. Next day we finished with 15 and came home this morning. We could use some fresh birds but with the right weather it can still be “right”.

This is in response to my post of 11-14 regarding the events that transpired on that particular visit to the duck club.My understanding from today is that the memmbers involved are now upset with me for making that particular post. I guess I could have handled it better, but do not know how to personally get in touch with each of these members.I should have addressed the matter with them when the event happened or took it up with the owner of the club so he could have handled it.What is done is done,my future membership,I will give it though in the coming days. From information received today from the club manager, some ill feeling have developed between me and the members involved in the incident.I really would have a problem in dealing with members of the club that have these ill feelings towards me.I cannot undo what has been done.My interest at this point in preceding with this year’s duck season is somewhat in doubt,as a result,my thanks to my readers of of my posts, for I will not be posting for awhile time I know which direction my duck season will be going.

John, due to the lack of moisture the pot holes in Nebraska and Iowa don’t exist. My guess once they moved and got the areas like nod valley bb and sc they stopped. Sure wish Nebraska would do it like Missouri on public hunting.

Hunted bob brown and had a four man limit by 7:45. There number count is correct. 50,000 birds mostly mallards. There was a party by me that shot every 2-5 minutes for over an hour. Must of either had a beginer hunter with them or was shooting TALL birds! I would think they would of had there limit.

Just a report from my two sons who have renewed our old lease near Mound City. The boys hunted Friday and Saturday.Birds, mostly mallards were moving at shooting time till around 11AM.Both sons limited out on greenheads.Saturday, one son hunted back in the flooded corn and other hunted in near by field that had been ripped,he used his layout blind. Both sons hunted in the late afternoon, both had groups of 25-50 mallards at a time, both limited out on Saturday. The boys said that it appears there was a migration over last weekend, also reported numerous large flocks of snows coming out of Squaw Creek and heading north and then coming back to refuge later in the day.Our club has shot almost 100 birds so far, mostly good numbers last week, strange for weather has not been bad in the north to move the birds south.

My visit to hunt my lease began on Monday afternoon. They had shot some 13 birds in the morning.Nothing in afternoon. Wednesday very poor few birds.Had bad tuesday night which I will not get into. This cause was bad due to other members in the group.I now will stay with people I know. Wednesday afternoon, most of members were sleeping it off in the afternoon.I had blind to myself, made the discovery that I had left my calls in my other hunting jacket at home. Being frustrated at the events of the two days,I fed the dog around 3:30PM,packed up my gear and headed back to Columbia, never woke anyone sleeping.I will not be posting for a while till I make a decision for rest of the season. My problem, and I will deal with it.

My landlord called me last night, said once rain stopped the ducks started moving, three hunters,16 birds, mallards gadwells and mixture of bonus ducks. My lease in Chariton County.Report when I return.

Hunted Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Tuesday was a bust. Saw some high fliers about 9:30 and had one bunch of ring necks buzz the decoys. Changed locations for Wednesday and saw lots more birds. Ended getting a couple of woodducks, gadwals and ringnecks. No mallards worked the decoys. ben

Hunted Wednesday and Thursday.Wednesday was a dud. Thursday morning was much better, had some 20 gadwells dropped into decoys about 10 minutes before shooting time. They left before shooting time, short stopover. From shooting time till around 8:30, had all kinds of action, mostly gadwell, although one bryant was shot.Three of us ended up with six birds, many missed shots.Last retreive for Holly made my day,had a gadwell down some 100 yards from blind in brush.Waited till things calmed down, took her down to general area. She swam across a short canal, nose hit the water as she got to the marsh grass on other side of canal and in a few minutes, picked up the scent and found the bird, which was dead.Great work with her nose.It made my day along with the other retrieves she made around the blind.Be back at them again this weekend.Cold front coming on Monday, should stir up up some new birds. One member shot four birds on tuesday morning, left in the afternoon.

It has been some 3 yrs. since I hunted Bob Brown. The flood in 2010 pretty much knocked it out. Hunted it several times, always had good success. It is a wade and shoot area, but most of area has canals that you would need a boat.A layout boat was always my choice of a boat, dry seat in the corn fields, the canals will take you to the corn fields, after leaving the canals and you pull into the area you want to hunt, you can wade that area,I assume things are back to normal by now. They do have a limited number of hunters compared to Grand Pass.If you can’t get in. ,Nodaway Valley CA is near buy,it has a wade and shoot area.Good luck.

Looks like your computer might have had a slight malfunction??? Looks like your latest post was duplicated multiple times over and over.

At any rate thanks for sharing your update.

We had a really good opener in NW Missouri. We had 5 of us and limited by about 9am at our farm. Mix of gadwalls, wood ducks, pintail (1), canvasback (1) and teal.

Sunday was the usual slow down we expect. Great weekend to get things started.

Hunted the lease on Wednesday and thursday.Weather was a problem.Very little wind and temps in the 60″s,even had honey bees in the blind by afternoon. On Wednesday first hour and half numerous birds, teal, wooddies, galdwells and some mallards, none wanted to work,no wind was the big problem.Did manage to take two drakes early morning.Afternoon both days very very slow.On Thursday, saw more ducks at shooting time than we saw on Wednesday, same type.Same results, galdwells, teal and some 10 mallards worked us with several passes, but with no wind, every thing looked dead in the water. One greenwing got to close, that was our take for the morning.Temps back into the 60’s,left at noon to head back to Columbia. Hope next week brings more weather. There seems to numerous ducks in the area, but with this kind of weather, they are all sitting in the small bodies of water in the area.Holly made some nice retrieves both days, was concerned about her for she is ten and Wednesday night was in bed early, come thursday morning, she slept in,till we had breakfast and got our gear together, she was out of bed and at the door with tail waggleing.Did nice retrieve on the teal shot which dropped some 30 yards from the blind in some marsh grass.Stay safe.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 50-60 Degrees
