Well, another season has come and gone. As I sit in the house today, drinking coffee, spending time with the family and watching it snow, I am content with this past season.

I shot more ducks on a personal level than I had in years past. I finished with 66 birds with 2 bands. Best part of all, is I killed birds in all parts of the state this year. I actually was able to shoot a limit of BWT on opening day of teal season, a first. I shot my first redhead. Saw tons of redhead and canvasbacks this year.

Although I never saw a real heavy push of birds, most places were steady with birds.
I was able to take my 5 year old daughter out a few times this year.

My old chessie, Sadie, retrieved more birds than ever and really filled her role as the meat dog this year. She is 6 and due to injuries when she was younger, is now in semi retirement.

Right now, I have a 7 week old chocolate male sleeping by my side. I look forward to the many birds that he will retrieve in his time and the joy that he will bring to the hunt.

I wish we would have been able to hook up for a group hunt this year, but by the time that we got a decent number of birds down, the season was almost over. There will always be next year.

Can’t wait until September, when it will start all over again!!

South Central Central OK 01-29-2011 12:53
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 45-50 Degrees
Well surprisingly the last two days have been pretty good shoots. We are still holding better than average numbers here in Central OK for the weather we are having. Usually the ducks get pretty stale, that is we have ducks that are almost residents, they have been here so long. They get pretty hard to hunt, but we are down to only using a few decoys or none and do no calling. If you pick the right place you will get your shots. Yesterday was 20 or so for 5 guns. Today 10 of us split and hit three different ponds in the area and nearly everyone limited. Pretty unusual for this late. More geese in the area than I have seen in a years. Only one more day

Quick 5-man limits today on one of the few ponds without ice. The few ponds that had open water had good numbers so I don’t see a big push of our ducks moving out right now. Most of the ponds were showing signs of thawing out this afternoon. In our area it seems we have a few more late season ducks than the past few years,

Hey Greenhound, Welcome! As was said there are some decent public hunting areas down there, depending on where in SW OK you will be Mountain Park WMA is one you might check. Best place to start may be at the state wildlife department website; wildlifedepartment.com . Hurry though, only a few weeks left.

We seem to be holding a few more ducks here in central/southcentral OK than we usually do this late in the season. Six of us shot 21 today. It was on early, but this pond has no cover at all around it so as the light grew, the ducks stayed out of range, although we did see good numbers and quite a few geese as well.

I hope we don’t freeze out in the next few days.

Welcome Greenhound!! I don’t believe any of us do any hunting in that part of the state. There is a nice WMA down there though, called Hackberry Flats. Good luck!!

I have been shooting a few birds, but it seems most have been here awhile and know the routine. Hopefully we will pick up a few new birds before it gets too cold on us.

Were we still going to try to do that group hunt?

Hello All,

I’ve been waterfowling for 16 years, mostly in New Mexico and some in Louisiana. I’ve had some phenomenal hunts out here but I am moving to southwest Oklahoma next week. I’d like to start scouting the southwest part of the state for some places to hunt. Would anyone mind giving me a few leads? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Numbers seem to be on the increase a little. I took a day trip to SC OK yesterday and saw quite a few ducks on ponds. This may or may not mean we have more ducks where I hunt, but this morning it sure looked like it. I threw out two decoys on a string line and hunkered down on the bank. Right a legal they started in small groups one after the other. It was a real air show and I picked out six in about 20 minutes. Checked a few other ponds on the property and they are holding good numbers also. I hope this front doesn’t blow them out.

As far as hunting ponds here in centralsouthcentral OK. There are ducks around and they have been here for a while. Typically we are getting fair numbers in early and then next to nothing after 9:00 or so. Today was typical, we had some in early then as the light got up the ducks would set at the far end of the pond. The wind was a little off (set up for NE, got E to SE) and that didn’t help. Any of our ponds are good for a few to 10 or so. If its one or two guys its a pretty good shoot if three or more, its still good, but you won’t get the number of shots. Scouted ponds after hunting today and saw decent numbers on most of our spots; anywhere from a half dozen to 20-30.

My dirty little Grinch heart came up with the evil plan to sneak off today and hunt by myself on a pond that hasn’t been shot this year.

Greed is good. Had ducks hitting the water before I was loaded but got going and started picking them off. I had five real quick and had to wait for the sixth, but finished around eight. 4 Gadwall, 1 Can and 1 Jack. Fast, furious and over quick.

sorry, havent posted in a few days. Hit and miss, mostly mallards. Did manage to shoot a quick 20 minute 2 man this morn. Having to drive all over to find birds but have shot limits most days out. Stinks driving for 2 hours to shoot a few ducks and driving back again but there is simply no water very close by. Maybe this front will finally bring us some rain.

Hunted my Uncles place in Wayne today. Not a shot fired. Saw some flying, but nothing wanted to play.

It just seems like there are more divers around and less puddlers. I believe it is due to the lack of vegetation and what water is left is deep. Now if someone had a flooded low lying area, with plenty of vegetation, they should be covered up in green and gray.

Shot a pond near Paoli today. Just picked at singles and doubles and ended up with 6 for 3 guns; 4 Gadwall, 1 Greenhead and 1 Can.

Labs, we have not seen as many Jacks as we usually do but last two hunts have shot Cans which is usually pretty rare for the ponds we shoot.

Had a lot of birds in before LST. Not much flying after that. Shot 1 gadwall and 2 redheads.

Is it just me or does it seem like there are a lot more divers around this year? Seems to me that since our water is way low in most areas, the puddle ducks are blowing through.

Went to Foss yesterday and hunted geese on the refuge. As usual saw lots but got very few in range. Two of us shot three Cacklers, but it was still a good time.

Shot a watershed near Wayne today. For some reason this pond has been high all year and is just now starting to drop some, but it still has more water in it than I have seen in the last 4-5 years. It has some flooded timber and the Woodies have been roosting on it. We got good action for about the first half hour and shot one Canvasback, one Pintail and six Gadwall. Should have had more, but thats the way it always goes. After that no more ducks. We did see pretty good numbers on a couple of other ponds nearby.

I hunted the flood control in Lindsay on Sat. Birds were moving well at first light. About 150 birds were roosted on one side of the flood control and came up and off at the first shot. We shot VERY poorly. Should have had a 2 man limit, but ended up with only a Hen Canvasback and 3 gadwalls.

Hunted my uncles in Wayne today. Not much moving. I thought that the cold front would bring some birds. If it did, they were not in the Wayne area. Although we did not see even a 10th of the birds that I saw on Sat, we made the shots count. We managed to shoot 3 Blackjacks, 3 Hollywoods and a drake gadwall.

I hope we pick up some birds this week.

I checked my uncles place in Wayne this morning. Water is WAY down and not a single bird.

I was already planning to hunt a flood control that is holding lots of divers and puddlers over by Lindsay on Sat. I was going to hunt my uncles on Sunday. Looks like I will be heading somewhere else on Sunday.

Gotta check a few spots before I decided I guess.

Good luck to all!!

Well it seems we have even less water than we had 2 weeks ago. I don’t recall a time in recent memory where my ponds were this low. We do have a few ducks hanging around but if we don’t get some water they won’t be staying around long. I wish all a great #2 opener and a great finish to the season.

Had a pretty good hunt today at one of my leases down in Duncan. Never hunted there and was only going off of my partners(first time duck hunting) description of the pond. Got there plenty early and jump 100 or so geese off of it.

Shot well at first and then not so well. We ended up with 2 wigeon, 2 gadwalls and a bull can.

Plan on hunting in the Wayne area tomorrow. Hopefully this weather will bring the birds!!

Sure enough the action was much better yesterday. Went to a large farm pond in the middle of nowhere and shot several ducks of all different kinds. Buffle heads, jacks, mallards, greys, teal etc. then got into dark geese and even a volley at snow geese produced a couple.

Great to finally see some birds, now I just wish God would send some water so we could keep them around a bit.

While we were hunting we say several groups of high flying ducks and snow geese. Glad to FINALLY see some real acivity. Found some green on a pond today headed out in the morning to see it we can talk them down.

Scouted this place yesterday afternoon and saw around 50 ducks with atleast 6 geese.

Got there this morning and jumped geese and ducks off of it. Apparently they are using it as a roost.

I was picky with my shots and dropped a drake widgeon and drake gadwall with 1 shot apiece.

I watched alot of ducks work. Passed on several ringnecks.

All in all it was a good hunt!!

Ready to shoot a deer or 2 this weekend!

OK, um so, shot a few last weekend. Not nearly the number of birds as in the past, but I get reports that the numbers have been up the past few days.

Just got back from Wyoming last night. Took a doe antelope and a very average mule deer. Still it was my first mulie, so I has happy with it.

Still the big story is that 30 minutes into opening day I had an easy shot at a really huge whitetail. I’m talking 150 in buck, split G2 and G3. Deer of a lifetime. I hesitated thinking I came all this was to kill a mulie. Didn’t shoot. Never saw a mulie half as big. Oh well……..

Went 4 for 6 this morning!! First bird dropped in around 6:45 and was dropped with the bottom barrel. About a minute later unloaded both barrels and had two more tits up. Had to wait about 5 minutes and had 2 come buzz the dekes. Two more shots rang out, but birds kept going. Then those 2 birds merged with 4 others and after a couple of passes, they decoyed. 1 more shot finished out my limit. Dog retrieved nicely. Can’t wait for tomorrow!!!

Well decent weather this weekend, but I am glad February is over! What a crappy month. I went out today to take down a duckblind I built of burlap and a conduit fram. It was sweet blind, but the big blow on Christmas Eve destroyed it. Not a strait piece of pipe left. Did catch a few bass and throw some marks for the dog. I finally got the dog to not chase my lure, but when I throw the fish back in, he goes in after them. Funny a time or two, then just annoying.

Don’t have much going yet Mingo. For sure gonna chase some turkeys this spring if I can find a place or two. Might end up buying an over the counter doe antelope tag or two for Wyoming and making a trip up there in Sep. Not sure about the fall as far as birds go. Last couple of years I have went to CO and hunted with Mike and Damon. But I am going on the Argentina 2011 trip and will need to save my vacation time next Jan.

And yes, for some reason I still check these boards every day…lol!!

Assuming some of you are still checking in; what are your plans for next season? I’m working on a Mule Deer hunt in Wyoming this year, and hoping to find some turkey in a few months.

Buck up boys! There will be fish to catch soon, maybe a little turkey hunting and dog training to pass the time.
