I agree JB with your overall assessment of the season. Though there were some really good days for us, there wasn’t much consistency. Hope we can get more week to week reporting next season. Be well.

Overall a fairly slow season. Birds at times but very spotty. I hunted the Snake river the last day and shot a limit of drake goldeneyes and 1 greenhead. Dog had fun. COLD AS HECK!
Great time and I am thankful I have he opportunity to hunt!

Thanks everyone for the reporting and have a great winter.

Lots of birds in the area. Nothing really willing to work into a spread. Went out this morning abd didnt hear much shooting going on. Lots of geese are here. The down side to them being here is they are hard to hunt. Not to many people willing to let you hunt their land, and the ones that will let you hunt, get hunted to much by people. Best bet around here is either have money to pay your way onto land or get to the river early and get a good spot.

Snake river below C.J.Strike Reservoir 01-05-2008 22:30
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees
Unbelievable weather for the 5th of January. It was almost as warm as opening day. No action whatsoever. Checked out the pool behind the Strike dam and it appeared that most of the ducks that were there a week ago have left the area.

The Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge (Lake Lowell) has gone from 100K ducks a week ago to 70K ducks counted during this most recent count as of 01/03/08.

Not sure what is going on, but it appears that a lot of our migrators have moved further south with the most recent wind storms. What say you?

Weather fluctuated between cloudy early and sunny later on Sat and Sun, with calm winds Sat and higher winds Sun. Much better than it’s been for some time. Got quite a few mallards and widgeon trying to work, but wary. Best hunting of the year so far. Went to Grandview below Strike Dam last Thursday and never popped a cap. Lots of ducks but none working the river; all headed toward the cornfields. Big, high flocks. Not a lot of pressure.

Been hunting the boise the past week. Lots of high flocks and not very many of the willing to decoy. There is still a ton of birds in the area from Eagle to parma. With everything small being frozen they should start using the river more. Hopefully. I have been hearing that lots of people killing lots of ducks on the snake around the parma area. Lots of geese around, but they arent the easiest think to get to come in. Just gotta find were they are going and get permission to private land. If anyone knows if Cj Strike is frozen or not let me know.

Snake River downstream of C. J. Strike Reservoir 12-29-2007 20:18
Cloudy, Winds Calm – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
Mallards were not working the river today. Lots of wigeons in flocks of a dozen or more, very willing to decoy. This is a difficult area of the Snake River to hunt, as the water level is fluctuated each morning at the C. J. Strike dam. Water level in the early morning is extremely low, making navigation in the dark treacherous. Once decoys are set, the water level will rise upwards of 2-FT by mid-morning, requiring decoys to be tended to. Lots of floating vegetation debris that hooks on to decoys and drags them off downstream. If you can hack all of these daily aggitations, the hunting can be good this time of year.

Hunted the river today with a great location and decoy set. NO BIRDS. It really is unbelievably slow on this part of the river. Probably didn’t see any more than 2 or 3 dozen puddle ducks all morning. According to the USFWS, there is just under 80,000 ducks on Lake Lowell.

Cloudy, Accumulating Snow – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
SNOW!!
Over a foot on the ground now. The river is iced up and the birds are concentrated. Way too dangerous for me and my dog. A few geese staying around and some mallards. Lots of common goldeneye and a few Barrow’s goldeneye on the SF Snake River. All the fields are buried and the birds are stuck to the river.

Hunted several times this past week. Still not a lot of birds working the river. Most of the puddle ducks are holed up on Lake Lowell. If you stay out the entire day, you may be able to put together a limit. We need more ducks in SW Idaho and a good freeze.
