January 23, 2002 – Migration Update

There has been little changed in the northern portion the flyway. Geese are fair in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Oregon hunters reported increase in widgeon and mallard activity. Teal have been flying better in Northern and Central California with goose harvests low. Arizona reported increased harvests in the final week with an influx of ducks, geese and hunter activity to move the birds around.

CENTRAL FLYWAY

Goose numbers dropped over previous weeks in Colorado and Nebraska. Duck activity was slow in Kansas with reported increases in Oklahoma south to eastern Texas. New Mexico, having had an exceptional season, continued to receive new birds and increasing duck and goose harvests in the final days.

MISSISSIPPI FLYWAY

Despite continue mild temperatures Alabama, Kentucky and Mississippi hunters all reported increased activity over previous weeks with new arrivals of wigeon, gadwall and mallards — who departed form Ohio, Indiana and Illinois over the past 7 days. Arkansas and Louisiana hunters continued to struggle with few mallards and just a slight increase in pintail and spoonies. Canada goose numbers remain strong in southeast Wisconsin and Northern Illinois with southerly hunters disgusted with the current climate trends.

ATLANTIC FLYWAY

With the exception of the goose recovery story and the long awaited return of goose seasons to Maryland, there is little outstanding news out east. Sea ducks are good to fair from Boston Harbor south to New Jersey. Goose numbers remain excellent in most of Pennsylvania and dwindling to the south. Duck activity around the bay is confined to salt marshes away form ice with mallard and black ducks good — all others fair. From the Carolinas south to Florida there has been little change over previous weeks with so many waterfowl still in northern locations.
