Hunting this morning was good. River hunting has been hit and miss. Limit of Widgeon. the numbers of birds seems down, should pick up as temps drop. Hopefully. We didn’t see lots of duck, the ones we did died.

Sauvie Island Private Land 10-29-2008 18:46
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
I went out Sunday afternoon with very low expectaions which were greatly exceeded. We had numerous flocks of Mallards and Pintails work between 3:30 and the end of shooting. Three of us ended with around 12 birds with three or four in the bush. Nice afternoon. The birds are definetly on the island.

McCormick Slough 10-22-2008 17:23
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
Hunted McCormick this morning with pretty good succes. I took my wife out and we ended with 8 between the 2 of us. We passed on alot of GW teal simply because those darn things come in and go out so fast. it is hard to get an inexpierenced hunter used to pulling up and shooting that fast.

Anyways there was not a huge amount of ducks on the slough but there was enough to keep you entertained. Few mallards. a few pintails. mostly GW teal and widgeon.

Aldridge Point Lewis and Clark NWR 10-13-2008 22:43
Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 50-60 Degrees
Got five with three in the bush and a banded hen mallard. We could not get our until 10AM. Watch the tides. Since it was low tide about an hour before shooting time we could not launch. The river is low and they lost the bottom three feet of concrete. Some guys were backing out into the mud and lifting the boat off at the edge of the water. My boat is too big for that. We saw quite a few ducks but not as many as last year.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees
Well hope everyone had a good opener.
Sat i set up by myself in a cow pasture near boardman that was holding about 50 geese. got 3 big honkers and 1 speckelbelly.

Sunday went down to McCormick and got a river blind. lots of duck movement and lots more geese than i expected to see. huge groups of snow i would guess over 4000 snows got up and went north. we ended up shooting 12 geese and 14 ducks for 3 of us. hell of a sunday hunt for the refuge.

there seems to be a lot of new birds in the area. should make for a good first couple of weekends. doesnt seem like there will be much pheasant hunting going on for me.

Klamath Falls 10-09-2008 20:11
Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
eing good numbers of puddle ducks along Upper Klamath Lake. State line road also has good numbers of Spec’s adjacent to Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuge. Weather is definetly dropping off with high today around 42 with n/w winds picking up. This morning low in the 30’s and expected to continue to drop off. Has been some years since these numbers have been seen this early..weather definetly the factor.

well it is almost here. sat is the opener.

I was down at McCormick this morning and picked up a new map. They have shut down the East slough(The one that runs to the hunter check station) and have added 4 blinds on the river to the north west side of the fields. I was told that some of these were pits. They have also added blind 31 wich is just east of blind 32 from last year. there is no water there yet but should fill up as season goes on.

On the fields the 2 corn fields are closd right now as we are still in the process of getting those harvested should be done by next week. might even get one done by this weekend.

One of the wheat stubble fields had around 100 snow gees and about the same canandas. Whoever gets that blind opening morning should have a good shoot. I have also been seeing 3 groups of Specks flying around. a few have ended up on my farm but i am sure that there is some down at the refuge as well.

There are a lot of local and early migrator ducks on the slough and river and should make for a good opener.

Good luck to everyone and i will be at McCormick sunday morning with a #12 pick…

Cloudy, Winds Calm – 60-65 Degrees
So I took a young man out for the youth hunt today. Great morning. Hiked in and setup on large pond that was holding a ton of birds. He limited out by 8:45. Ton a mallards, widgeon the lake. Great time today just helping teach setting up the decoys, calling for birds and running dogs. I can’t wait for my turn….
