Cloudy, Winds Calm – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
I got to hunt Charlton Kennels Century Farm today. For years I’ve trained on their concept ponds but the duck club was off limits. Today I got to go as a guest and we had a great time. Unfortunatly once we busted the birds off the ponds getting to the blinds, they birds didn’t really return. I managed to scratch out a couple of Wood ducks but the shooting was a bit slow. Club members mentioned that the afternoon shoots have been much better as the birds come in to roost for the night. The last big day was Jan 1 when the club shot 54 birds. Regardless of the shooting, just the oppertunity to hunt a classic duck club, stay in the club house and sit in the same fields that have been hunted for 100 years was true priveledge and I thank Kelly Charlton for allowing me to visit.

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
Hunted this morning went out for ducks and ended up with two smaller geese one cack and one tav. Dont usually get the smaller geese over here but I have seen a few since the big freeze. No ducks seen only three small flocks of mallards flying high. Two weeks to go.

Willamette Valley 01-10-2009 23:48
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 40-45 Degrees
Wow, i’m a few reports behind. Good news is its because I’ve been hunting. Hunting for new places to hunt, hunting for new people to go with and hunting for new recipe’s to try. Over the holiday break I hit the river hard, hit Fern Ridge hard and got some oppertunities to hunt some private farms around Corvallis. Lets get to what I’ve been seeing….

I’ll start with Fern Ridge. Over the past two weeks I’ve had better success with the Widgeon primarily. Good numbers of birds, good early morning shooting. Royal/Fisher Butte units have been good, didn’t do so well up around Kirk pond.

Willamette River. The river around Irish Bend was doing pretty well, seeing lots of birds, getting some good shoots in. Since the flooding though I haven’t been able to get on the river. I just don’t trust my 17′ boat on the river right now.

Mohawk Valley. – The amount of birds in the valley has really increased since the snow/freeze a few weeks back. Shooting is good early then very hit and miss the rest of the day.

Today I got to hunt some private property outside Corvallis and I have to say, I now know where the birds are. We had geese on us till noon and I think all the ducks in the valley are living there. Amazing time today. Heck, in a place like this I could quickly convince myself that I can blow a duck call.

We got a few weeks left, make the most of it. Have fun….

Well it sure warmed up here the last couple days. been in the 50s for the last 2 days.
I havent got the chance to get out much and look around but what i can see from my farm there is still a good amount of geese around. Not seeing as many ducks as ive seen in the last couple weeks.
A few days ago i saw big groups of ducks getting high and looking like they were moving out. again i havent been on the river since it has warmed they just dont need to go to the fields as much.
Anyways good luck to everyone this weekend.
Too bad Bill wont make it down.

This report is a few days late but last Friday the blind did well with most of the birds being mallards with a few gadwalls and woodies thrown in the mix. Sunday PM we took 4 big geese. I hope the next few weeks are as good.

well i havent been doing a very good job at gettting posts up. so here we go.

Over the weekend the hunting was very good. thursday- 21 mallards friday- 19 geese 1 mallard, sat. 9 geese 4 mallards, sunday 8 geese.
Lots of geese in the area and a pile of ducks.
The ducks seem to be cruising around all day long in big groups. If you can find the corn they are hitting try and get permission and you will have a good time. other wise find a good spot on the river and stick it out. they are working all day.

WE just got a fresh 1-2 inches of snow this morning wich should keep these birds moving and looking for food.
McCormick slough is still froze up tight but the river blinds have been producing pretty good numbers. The fields have been having a lot of ducks working them but i do not think they have been killing alot.

On the Washington side- Patterson slough still has a lot of ice on it. I have heard there is only a few blinds that are huntable.

Also i have noticed that in past year as season starts to come to an end and the geese have picked through most of the corn around that they turn to grass field and pastures. Could also be that most of the geese around now are big birds and they just natruarly feed in smaller groups in little fields. But look for pockets of geese in private pastures. Some of these birds are easier to hunt as they normaly will use the same field for days before you hunt them and they come in with there feet down.

I think that we are in for a good last couple weeks of season.
good luck

Siuslaw estuary ( Cushmans area) 12-28-2008 16:14
Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 45-50 Degrees
Tried a new area today, not very good. Went with a buddy and hunted the Siuslaw River estuaries looking for a mixed bag. I got a 14 lb basin and 1 scaup. that was it. The river is very high do to snow melt. The rain has created sheet water everywhere making it hard to pull ducks from those areas. I think I will stick to the Willamette River where it has been ok

Wow, what a week. Finally seeing some birds in large numbers. We had a couple of big teal flocks come into our spread. Mallards in good numbers and some widgeon. Can’t wait to get back out in the morning.

Willamette River (valley) 12-23-2008 14:55
Cloudy, Snow & Rain Mix – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
Hunting has picked up. In general good numbers of mallards and widgeon. We have been hunting with groups of 2 and 3 and we are getting limits or very close to limits daily. Also the goose hunting has been good. Large flocks of cacklers. if you have access to fields try them. Try and find fields with ditches in them. the green fields are difficult to hide in. Layout blinds are good, but are difficult to conceal.
