Joe –

Don’t go to Locomotive Springs – I took my scouts out there camping a week ago. Did not even see a duck. – Save yourself a drive.

Hey Braden — Nice info on the Willard spur area, I hear about it often, but have never made it there. Have you gotten up to Locomotive Springs this year? Or is it just not worth the long trip? I haven’t taken my annual trip to Salt Creek area yet either–have you been there yet this season? Seeing ice? Layton and Centerville marshes had a lot of ice already, mostly thin, but some areas were a good 3/4 in. thick and hard walking thru. Hard on the waders and my dog; that’s hunting. –CUL –JOE

North side of Harold Crane 11-19-2005 17:33
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees
I walked out the North dike at Harold Crane on Thursday evening looking for swans. There were only a few swans that flew during shooting hours and they were too high. The mallards were flying all over out towards the Willard spur. The swans really started to fly about 20 minutes after it closed, but they were still flying pretty high. I hope they have not already been educated.
We went out on the Willard spur in the airboat today. We arrived at about 10:00. Some of the other hunters said that the primary flight times were around 1:00pm. We sat and saw nothing for over 2 hours, but then sure enough the birds started to fly. We shot a few but some other hunters set up a little too close and ended up flaring several more of the birds we probably could have had. My brothers set up north and west, and said the teal were flying steady at 1:00. Overall it was a good shoot and I am excited to get the birds figured out.

Take care and keep your face down,
Braden

Layton, Centerville marshes 11-18-2005 23:28
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
Hey Kurt — sounds like your buddy was just way too successful last year..that’s an awful lot of ducks. I work pretty hard every year for my birds — total 16 birds this year, but that’s 12 times out, and limiting out on the opener, well, you can figure out the rest of my days..but I love just being out there, now mostly with my young dog, trying to get her trained up right. It’s fun to shoot ducks, but maybe I’m just too far past the ‘shoot all you can shoot’ stage.
This is my first year sending in duck wings, but I’m pretty proud of the 16 I’ve sent them, cuz I, too, have worked pretty hard for all of them, especially the 2 my dog retrieved for me today……
Did see lots of mallards at Centerville marshes today, not much going on at Layton…..CUL — JOE

I have hunted harder this year than any year in recent memory. Conditions are Tough and so are the birds. Bird arnt looking at decoys and they dont like a call. Bird numbers are low HOPEFULLY the weather change will change hunting success. One of my hunting partners is on the federal wing program and last year he shot 212 ducks this year he had 3 hunts in a row that not a single shot was fired. That will give you a idea of what things are like in the Uintah Basin so far this season.
Good Luck Boys Kurt

Hey guys — surprise, I’m not dead, just felt like it the past few weeks with the flu. hOPE NONE OF YOU GET IT ! Anyhow, I feel like I’ve lost friends by not being on line here for such a long time. I haven’t felt like hunting much the past month, but think I’ll be back soon…… My dog Maxie was stolen just a little over a month ago, and if you guys have dogs you’ve raised from pups, you know how devastated I was. I can’t tell the whole story, but my wife and I were heartbroken for a whole week before we got word of her whereabouts, and finally got her back. It took a week to get her back to normal; she was pretty stressed also.
Then on Nov.2 I was able to take her hunting and she did 2 beautiful 30 and 50 yard water retrieves for me. Man, I was a proud papa, and we were a team again. She’s still young and learning, but what a great dog. Maybe you can imagine my thrill having her back….then the flu hit, but it’s almost gone, and Maxie and I will be crouched down in some marsh anxiously awaiting the whistling wings of incoming birds…soon.
So hopefully I’ll be back up and reporting again real soon..In the meantime it’s sure been nice reading all your reports. Thanks guys…CUL — JOE

was out in the uinta basin for a day hunt yesterday, the day started off with a group of hunters that started shooting at 7:30 instead of the 8 am start per the pheasant hunt! anyways the hunt turned out pretty well, my bag consisted of 2 redheads, a blue wing, ringneck, widgeon, and a crowd favorite spooner.

did see a flock of 6 big snows that circled the spread a couple of times before deciding on safer landing zones.

Harold Crane 11-03-2005 21:56
Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 45-50 Degrees
I went out after swans tonight at Harold Crane. There seems to be many birds in the area, but I did not get any to come right over. We did bag a pintail and a gadwall. The ducks were flying amazingly low right over the dikes. The swans flew from North to South steadily for about the last hour. Jereme, I tried to get over to the open blocks of the bird refuge earlier this year, but I ran into mud. I used to have the corners of each block marked in my GPS, but my brother lost the GPS. I hate it when that happens. Anyway let me know what you find. I saw tons of birds flying out on the Willard spur. We need to get the airboat back out there.

Take care and keep your face down,
Braden

I think this has been one of the better years i’ve seen in a long while. There are plenty of ducks out there, seems like the gadwalls are plentiful for every one I would have to agree and the pintails also seem to be providing, and there’s always the geese I don’t know if it’s just me but there either dumber this year or where getting to be better hunters cuz they gotta have it and the black feet are comin down. Well good luck everbody I think ole goose guts is going to be hanging out at the du site come december.
