Well, we’re headed to the ‘dog days’ of Summer, but this is the time to review stuff that was good or bad about last season, do some scouting at old places or find some new ones, keep your eye in tune at the shotgun range, repair or buy new ‘duck stuff’, work with your dog, repair/work on blinds, practice your duck and goose calling, make notes on who to call for private land access, maybe line up some new hunting buddies for this season (and maybe drop that one that keeps skybusting and almost shot you last year)—anyhow, lots of fun stuff to think about and do this time of year — the OFF-SEASON..

I’ve been seeing new gosling broods in different locations around the GSL…Anybody seen ducklings yet? I’ve already scouted out 2 new hunting locations for next season that may be promising—hope you guys are doing the same, as sometimes the ‘old places’ just aren’t the same, or maybe not even be there the next time…Good luck on your scouting, shooting, and preparation for this coming season in Utah’s Waterfowl World…JOE

Hey guys–not much time left in the season (again) and I hope you’ve had a great year, with some success and free from accidents..I just had one of my best A.M. hunts, right after the recent snows and in our current cold spell..Most waters are tight, but if you have access to a creek or canal in a legal hunting area, you too may be in for some good shooting…shot 6 drake mallards and 1 drake pintail off a local open stream, lots of mallards around that day…maybe try once more…good scouting and good hunting to you..you may freeze your buns off, but it’s worth it this time of year…CUL — JOE

East Shore GSL 01-07-2007 22:08
Cloudy, Accumulating Snow – 25-30 Degrees – Ice
Anybody out there doing any hunting? any good? Pretty much all my pond areas a frozen up tight now, but I can still shoot at a duck or three off creeks or canals that are open…My areas haven’t been producing any geese for the past 3 weeks, but I’ve still been seeing a few flocks, enough to put a few goose dekes out with the smaller impostors…Anybody hunting the bigger rivers, like the Weber or Ogden, or Bear??? Good luck out there…JOE

Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
Did make it out this A.M. for a couple hours..not many ducks in area, but shot 1 teal and 1 mallard..about 0830 some geese actually were flying in the area, and 3 actually saw my dekes and responded to my humble calling…2 shots = 2 huge Canadas, and my dog was in heaven, especially on the 100+ yd swimming cripple retrieve…that was fun to watch, especially when the goose dove 5 or 6 times before she caught it… that was a proud dog (and papa) as she brought it all that way back…Are you seeing geese, or ducks, where you are???

Hey Ronster — Good to hear you’re out there…I haven’t seen many geese yet either, sure hope the “big” push hasn’t come through already, ‘cuz I would have missed it….Saw a few small flocks in my spot a week ago (shot 1) then last time out there didn’t see a one, but finally did get into a few mallards…so it was a good A.M.
but I do hope we’ll be seeing some geese pretty soon…I do think a lot of snow would help…I’ll be out Mon. A.M. for a little while…let you know what happens…CUL — JOE

South Shore Wetlands 12-09-2006 17:12
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 10-20 Degrees – Ice
Duck shooting is slow on the south shore.
What baffles me is the lack of geese. We usually see and bag more geese than we have so far. If anyone has any information on goose numbers, I’d appreciate it.

Good luck, ronster

Anybody get out in the cold?? Looks like most of our marsh waters are frozen up, at least mine were as of this A.M. Did find an opening in my otherwise frozen pond, and bagged three ducks and 1 Canada goose..could’ve had a tundra swan if I had a tag as it flew by me twice at about 25yds, and then even landedfor awhile on the ice, til my dog’s whining scared it up again..any how, nice A.M. hunt, cold but productive….CUL — JOE
