Been hunting at least every other day last two week. Good numbers of decoying geese. Hard winds have made it tough. Today we really got into them early. Small groups decoyed well. Shot a single greater that when retrieved we found mono fishing line had been wrapped up around one foot. It had cut through the tissue all the way to the bone. Foot was swollen and infected. Didn’t seem to bother him when we flipped the lids he was cupped wings and landing gear down. Wondered if anyone else has seen this?

Cloudy, Accumulating Snow – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
Hunted sunday in the snowstorm, very very few ducks were seen, couple groups before shooting time then a few singles and pairs and had one decent flock of wigeon that wouldnt commit, managed to shoot 1 drake mallard. A group down from us shot and absolutely gorgeous pintail. Still lots of geese and they were flying very low in the storm. woulda been a great shoot in the corn where they were headed…. Had to listen to a group just down from us shoot at anything that was within a hundred yards of them, it was hard to even watch. Out of two boxes of shells they ended up sailin’ one goose and they broke the wing on another one but it managed to fly off.
Warm weather is supposed to be back in a couple days, we will see what that does for the birds………

Cloudy, Heavy Fog – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
Hunted the platte this morning, like matt had said there was quite a bit of ice on the river and any moving water was ragin’! I pulled out my waders to find a 3″ gash in the butt that wasnt there the last time I put them away and thought I forgot my calls, I thought, what a great start already…. Hunted some warm water in a heavy fog this morning. Had 3 seperate groups of mallards light in the decoys and stay for a bit about 15 minutes before shooting time. Legal shooting time ducks flew quite well for the fog, managed 3 smileys, a wigeon and a nice drake gwt. Even after today i can count on one hand how many spoonies i have shot, not that i am too good to shoot them, but that where i lived in MN we never saw them. Kinda hesitant to try em on the grill but i am gonna wrap em in bacon and smother em in a spicy ginger sauce…I’ll let ya know how they turn out. Didnt see that many birds today once the fog lifted, got burnt on 4 different occasions by spoonies, wigeon and gaddies. Should’ve been done on “good” ducks about hour into the morning. Oh well! When i came out i was stopped by the game warden and he said thats the “most ducks he’s seen in a while”, so i guess huntin’ has been pretty poor up there this year.
Also checked a few other spots on my way back to denver and hunting pressure was very heavy for the amount of birds around, i suppose it is saturday.
Gonna give ‘er a go in the morning again, not sure yet where i wanna go, hopefully the birds lose their minds in the snow!

I kinda had to laugh just now thinking to myself that there is only gonna be a couple people that read this, let alone post, before the next time i get on. Come on people, post SOMETHING, even if you dont get the chance to get out. Seeing any birds? got a buddy who has been out? Tell a good story…anything! hahaha!
Good luck to all gettin’ after em during the upcoming front…

matt,
hey i tried to join that website and it said i had to wait for an email from a web administrator or something and i am yet to receive an “invite”…..I am headed up to the platte tomorrow and we will see for sunday w/ the storm coming in, but if there is no open water then yeah probably not many birds around. Hoping to find something huntable and maybe a pile of birds, concentrated heavy in one spot…

Matt,
If you wanna get after some honkers, i got a enclosed trailer and a pile of full bodies, as do you if i remember reading some of your old posts a long time ago. PM me or shoot me an email @ greenheadkilla@hotmail.com if you wanna get out there…

Unbelievable the lack of people on here, it really could be a great website.

Greenhead……The majority of people who waterfowl in this state are on Coloradowaterfowl.com, I don’t use this site anymore because as you have noticed, no one posts anything for this state. check out that site. As for hunting geese are thick in some spots and gone in others. S Platte is iced over east of Greeley and was pretty slushy where is wasn’t froze solid. Not many ducks on it at all.

Ventured out west from NE Arkansas to hunt rocky mountain waterfowl, an hour north of Denver, contacted Kevin Ayers of Ponderosa Outfitters an experienced caller with all full body goose decoys, in a comfortable pit located in a harvested cornfield. Hunted on Monday the 20th. My son SFC Paul Kopecky and I got 5 geese in a morning of hunting. surprising amount of geese around the Denver area. highly recommend this guide and outfitter. 11 dollars a day for a daily licence for out of state hunters is a deal

It’s been slow. Warmed up and all the ponds have reopened.

Today we did good. I shot a limit in Gaddys and widgens. My son got 2 of each. geese didn’t fly until noon, of course we had pulled everything by then. Got buzzed by two flocks of teal as we were leaving.

Merry Christmas all.

Snuck away for a quick hunt on the platte…
hiked a 1/2 mile from the truck, set out about 2dz floating mallards, a handful of fullbody mallards and 7 honker floaters. Put the spinner out turned it on, no more than got to shore and killed a hen mallard (oops) Looked up spinner somehow didnt take the charge from the charger last night and died w/in 10 minutes. forgot all my calls in the truck… Had 1 other mallard circle a few minutes later, thats all i saw in the form of mallards ALL DAY! We even sat til 1pm waiting for the honkers to come back to water after being in the fields, they didnt come back til after noon and went straight to the park in fort morgan w/out giving us a look. All the honkers have been there a while it seems, as they head from point A to point B and nowhere else. In need of some cold weather i believe. Heading back to minnesota for the holidays, wont post again probably til after the new year.
Merry Christmas to all!!

went up for the past 4 days scouted and hunted all over from Greeley all the way to julesberg, shooting a few birds along the way. Lots of birds around but go from there roost spots which cant be hunted to their fields and are tough to get permission on most but most farmers i talked to were very friendly and would allow hunting if not leased up. As of today that whole area from fort morgan to julesberg is absolutely filthy w/ dark geese. Driving back along 76 was pretty hairy pulling my enclosed trailer in all the crazy crazy wind!!! I had to come back for work today, but it will be interesting to see what comes after this storm. Hoping for fresh birds and everything to freeze up to hunt the rivers.
Also, I was very very surprised to see the lack of hunting pressure midweek on public swa’s. That is great!
Get out there and good luck guys!

well, i will be headed to the platte it looks like tomorrow and maybe all the way through the weekend. Anybody been huntin’ up there!? i came through on 76 2 weeks ago now and there were a ton of birds (mallards, dark geese, w/ a some snows mixed in) headed to the fields to feed. Did not hunt was just passing through.
Most stuff is leased up, up that way i hear, is this true? The days of knocking on a farmers door and getting permission is over…!?!? I guess its just a little tough to chew on, but i will be heading that way to check it out! I may have to learn the hard way.

Also, there has to be more than a couple people on this website from co hunting, yet not a lot of posts..?

mostly scouted, did little hunting followed the arkansas river from pueblo to kansas border 12-07-2010 18:05

I scouted from rocky ford swa east all the way to the kansas border over the last few days. Saw many flocks of migrating snows, and quite a few canadas as well. hunted rocky ford on friday had some groups of canadas work (coming off a gravel pit south of the river, going back and forth between there and holbrook) had only one group of 40 or so mallards working when a guy coyote hunting decided to shoot his rifle at the flock that was about 40 yards out coming in on a string….i was so mad.
headed east from there, checked out john marten res. tons and tons of snow geese and a pile of ducks….up until the day i went to hunt it, shallow water froze and the few ducks that were still there wanted nothing to do w/ me.
Put on many miles hiking in the granada swa and saw 4 mallards total. did kick up 3 pheasants.
overall, was kind of disappointed w/ the number of ducks seen. I did have all of my full body goose dekes w/ and pulling the enclosed trailer. How are the farmers in these areas about giving permission to hunters!?

I am in the process of moving to colorado from minnesota and trying to figure out this hunting out here is quite the task.
I will probably be headed to the platte to try and figure out some area up there next, although i didnt wanna have to deal w/ a ton of hunters. I guess i will have to deal w/ it…

I haven’t posted here in a while. T-day started out a -1. By sunrise -14. It was painful. A lot of birds first light but with the cold and chasing decoys down the river I’m sad to say I never fired a shot. by 8:30 I had had enough.

Skipped Friday had to work, went Sat and Sun. Actually did fair. 40 degree turn around. Ended up with 6 ducks and the first goose of the season. And pick up someone’s field deek that got away. 6 more and I’ll be even. LOL

Things have really slowed down. The river has been too iced up and dangerous to risk putting a dog in it.

Finished up the season with Carpy and 1 Cup. We saw ducks at first light and had chances at geese, but ended up with nothing. Even though a we put a major effort in trying to recover a cripple goose that had enough left in the tank to make it to a gravel pit about a 1/2 mile away.

Did a afternoon hunt with Carpy and his son. What weird weather. January and 60+ degrees. Didn’t see a single duck but did have several large flocks of geese fly by.

We weren’t really set up for geese so the most we could do was get them to look at us as they flew by. Carpy says they we’re laughing so hard at my calling that they were having trouble flying.

It didn’t matter. Time spent in the blind with friends is always time well spent.

Almost didn’t go out today, felt a little under the weather, so I got a late start.

I killed my first goose of the year at 8:32 then followed that about an hour later with a drake wigeon.

Not much was flying. Hardly any ducks to speak of. but I did have two more flocks of geese get a little too close checking my spread out and I shot a bird out of each group.

Hunted Friday. Pretty miserable. Birds were holding tight on the river. My son and I split up and tried to jump shoot, hoping to push birds back and forth to each other.

The spot I jumped held about 300 geese and a equal amount of Golden eye,Gad walls and wigeon. I could have killed a limit of geese right off but because I didn’t want to take a chance on losing my dog to the ice and fast current I held my fire.

So I watched as they flew to my son. None really got close enough to shoot and by the time they circled back to me they were too high too.

We each took a position and waited for the ducks to return. He got 2 wigeons and a gaddy and I got a drake gaddy.

I haven’t been out since.

Went out again yesterday, Tues. The predicted weather of cloudy and snow on the way, did not happen. However, I did have two flights come in. The first did two passes and left. I didn’t shoot because I thought they would make one last pass. The second flight a few hours later came right in and I took them as they were landing. Took me two shots to kill one goose. Lots of birds in the air.

I went out Thursday. The morning was beautiful blue sky and no wind. Forecast was cloudy and 5 to 10 mph wind. No birds in the morning and only a few in the air.

Then, the clouds came in ahead of the storm. The sky filled with over 10,000 birds. It clouded up just before noon. By 12:30 I had my four geese. Birds were peeling off every flight and fighting to get into the decoys. While I was picking up, the dog and I had to keep chasing birds away.

I guess the big flights are here, with lots of young birds. Good Hunting

Lots of geese last weekend flying over a spread of 200 near Julesberg. Nothing decoyed though. Did have 5 whitetails crash my goose spread shortly after sunup. Where the hell were they in archery season??

Hunted over 20 DZN deeks this week and between that and the snow it was excellent! Only shot 4 on Wends, thurs was cold snowy and socked in, pulled tons of geese from way high, prolly landed arond 300 birds that day and killed 26 between 8 of us! Fri was another good day still cloudy and really cold-4, 4 of us killed 15 by 11:30 had another 150 geese on the ground! they worked great and mostly all little geese only had 4 that were bigger than 4 or 5 pounds. Sat we showed up with high hopes again but not as lucky, they would lock up glide in and go round and round then split, could of been the very nice conditions, clear calm and sunny or the pit melting off or the pounding they took the last 3 days but still managed 4 and we callled it a week at noon, geese everywhere and saw new geese come in every day.

Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 35-40 Degrees
Went and tried one of the local reservoirs. Got set up in freezing rain. Just sat down and had a good flock bust right over me before I got the gun loaded. I thought it was going to be a good shoot. Not.

Everything stayed just out of range or circled behind me. Shooting from a layout blind sucks.

Toughed it out til 10 hoping some boaters would push some ducks to me. Swamped my waders picking.

Can’t wait to try it again. LOL

Got up at early 30 drove 75 miles and got beat out to the only blinds available.

Turned around and drove back to Debuque SWA. Someone was already set in my favorite spot so I moved up river.

Never fired a shot. The guys in my spot did some shooting but I think it was at dicky birds.

All the ponds from GJ to Rifle are ice free and that’s where all the birds are sitting. Too bad there mostly on private property.

I going to try towards G-wood tomorrow.

We need some winter to show up.

Heavy fog again this morning and 25 degrees, not much moving early, arond 8:30 had a small flock of 10 pop in out of the fog, 2 land and we are greedy cause we have 5 guys in the pit, the flock swings and the pair get up and before we can shoot they disappear in the fog! 9 a flock of 10-12 appear and make 1 pass, 20 yards out and 5 up, dont wait around for them to land we take them and kill 6 and thats all for the day.

+19 at the blind this morning, Partly cloudy.

I saw gadwall, mallard, widgeon and geese today.

Some birds at first light but I couldn’t hit s hit. Then nothing for 3 hrs. I was just about to pick up when a pair of teal came in and I busted one. Turned out to be a banded hen. Second band I’ve ever picked up.

I was texting my son about the band when I had to put the phone down and double up a drake and hen gadwall.

After that another flock of teal and I killed another hen. Then up river some body jumped a good sized flock of geese and they flew right over me and I got my first goose of the year. I could have killed another goose but my gun jammed.

That was ok, I had to make two trips carrying everything out.

Happiness is a tired lab.

Woke up friday morning and saw some snow out the window and couldn’t help but head out early and get some scouting done, got out there and it was windy and the birds were flying. set up four dozen snows and shot two right off the bat and then two more when they were heading back to the roost. picked up and waited for the afternoon, went out to one of are other fields and noticed two flocks in boardering fields and sat in between them. shot snows all evening long at thirty yards; ended the day with 10 snows and the field i would set up on opening day.

sat. morning rolls around my dad, friend and i set up about 11 doz. canada’s and about 5 dozen snows. right at shooting light a scout flies out and decoys right in; he still had ice on his chest. from there on out had pretty much every group come in and we were done with a three man limit by 6:45a.m. before the main flight had even started. we let the field rest so it could be shot again on sunday.

on sunday we headed out to the field again with a few more guys and decoys. it was hard hiding seven guys but we managed to shoot 20 canadas and a really nice blue, could have had our limits if shooting was a little better. hunted the evening, but the birds didnt even fly managed one more canada. a pretty good weekend i’d say, but there is one more thing. as my friend, dad and i were heading back to the club house to drop the trailer off and a buck ran out from the side of the road and smack we hit him going about 35. we get out of the truck to see the damage and the deer. the damage was bad, but get this the buck was no where to be found , we dragged the deer 17 yards and nothing, very minimal blood and hair. the DOW said it isn’t uncommon for a deer to take off after a hit, and said they are alot tougher then most people think. we looked for about an hour with no luck. the DOW officer said they will contact us if they find the deer. so with that said it was a great and eventful weekend.

My first chance to hunt since 2nd split opened. Still slow but to be expected this time of year.

Got to my blind only to find it stomped down by either elk or moo cows. Couldn’t tell which. Tracks of both, even on my decoy bag that I had left inside.

Anyway I didn’t do too bad. I got 2 drake green heads and a hen. I should have got 2 more but that’s alright. No geese thus far yet. Spent 1/2 the day rebuilding my blind.

Went out Monday morning. Lots more ducks than a week ago. The snow and cold in Wyoming and Montana pushed them down. I got a widgeon and 2 gadwals. Hit a goose but it didn’t come down. Hopefully they will stay a while.

alright went out tody and shot a three man limit. i knew this weather would push a few birds down and keep them moving. the morning shoot ws awesome, the birds were moving and working well; so good it took a few boxes to put 18 in the bag. our bag consisted of teal, mallards, gadwall, widgeon, and wood ducks(drakes). i saw alot more birds this weekend then the last, with several flocks of migrating cranes. not sure if i will make it out next weekend but will post if i do.
