Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 50-60 Degrees
Hunted the lease on Wednesday and thursday.Weather was a problem.Very little wind and temps in the 60″s,even had honey bees in the blind by afternoon. On Wednesday first hour and half numerous birds, teal, wooddies, galdwells and some mallards, none wanted to work,no wind was the big problem.Did manage to take two drakes early morning.Afternoon both days very very slow.On Thursday, saw more ducks at shooting time than we saw on Wednesday, same type.Same results, galdwells, teal and some 10 mallards worked us with several passes, but with no wind, every thing looked dead in the water. One greenwing got to close, that was our take for the morning.Temps back into the 60’s,left at noon to head back to Columbia. Hope next week brings more weather. There seems to numerous ducks in the area, but with this kind of weather, they are all sitting in the small bodies of water in the area.Holly made some nice retrieves both days, was concerned about her for she is ten and Wednesday night was in bed early, come thursday morning, she slept in,till we had breakfast and got our gear together, she was out of bed and at the door with tail waggleing.Did nice retrieve on the teal shot which dropped some 30 yards from the blind in some marsh grass.Stay safe.

My two sons have a lease in Holt county. They hunted Sunday afternoon, had several groups of mallards work the flooded corn field hard, only one group committed, they got three drakes. My sons lease is near Squaw Creek. My club in Chariton County shot 17 birds on Saturday,a mix of teal, gadwell and some mallards,on Sunday five birds shot. The club said they missed Holly,my Lab,they lost two cripples.Holly is the only dog in the group of members.I am leaving on tuesday, will hunt tuesday, wednesday and thursday, will post when I get back.Birds in the area are hard to decoy. If you want success, you have to have water.

Saw lots of high fliers. Migration was on. Had 7 bunches swing the decoys at 25 yards. Mostly teal, divers, and a couple of mallards.
Fog on the way in was difficult.

All in all… a fun opening day. b

Second hand report from a friend in NE MO. He shared seeing several flocks of pintail and mallard over the weekend. Seems logical that there would be birds moving with the cold front.
Our lake in Grundy County is dry but it gives us an opportunity to do some dozer work.
It may be time to check into the cost of pumping.

Hello all:
Our 80 acrs of wetlands are full of water ,thanks to the pump we put in last year.Millett and smartweed coming up good. The farm next to us,did have a sprinkler system for his corn,it has been harvested, looks nice to our 80 acres, all that cut corn field.I work out at local hospital gym and have for several years to keep this old 76 year old body in shape. The director asked me a few weeks ago how much I would charge as a guide(me a guide)to take his 12 year old son out for the youth hunt.I told him (for free) I would take him and his son out for the youth hunt at my lease in Chariton county. His son has a great interest in learning about duck hunting,I am more than happy to take him,my first experience on a youth hunt. The youths are the future to out sport.Been working the dog the past month, she is in good shape, have kept her weight down during the Summer months.Numerous teal and woodduck in area at present. Will follow with posts this season, mostly from my area, also my son in KC has signed back up again on his lease near Squaw Creek, will hopefully get a invite for a hunt with him and my other son.Keep the dogs trim, can’t wait.

More scouting Sunday afternoon from 4 – 6 p.m. for sand bar options to hunt later in the season. Found 4 shallow sand bars that will work well. Did not see any ducks but that’s not unusual for the river this time of year and time of day. Typically it heats up when the marshes start to freeze up. ben

Saturday was a little slow but 2 of us managed to scratch out 7 teal hunting both morning and evening. Sunday morning was a big change with more birds in the area and on the move. Our party of 2 finished in about 20 minutes with a mixed bag of Green Wings and Blue Wings. Amazing what can happen overnight sometimes.

Fun teal season for sure and our best at our farm since we have been there. First time we have really had good water this early. Normally waiting on the corn to finish after replanting 2 times due to overly wet conditions…..that obviously was not the case this year!

Bring on the big ducks now! We did see a good smattering of them as well on Sunday.

Anybody been over to see how bad the drought is affecting possibkle water conditions at Schell and 4-Rivers? I heard it was bad before Hurricane Isaac, but there have been some rains since then, in that area. Did it help much? Hope there is water available to flood the pools in a month or so. DG

First time out on the river this year and glad all the boat stuff, motor, etc. worked. Saw some wood ducks early but no teal. Had buddies report lots of teal moved into EB on Friday and other second hand reports that they were shooting teal on river also on Friday. There are lots of sand bars and plenty of places to hunt. First time I’ve used Texas rigged decoys. They are sure fast to set out and pick up. ben

It does. The only confusing thing you shared was that “fields cut for silage” were considered baited. I think most of us old timers got it 🙂

To clear my earlier post, silage are the fields that have been mowed down and stalks and whatever grain is left is in the fields, these are baited.Silage cut for agriculture use where the corn is harvested,it is legal to hunt these. These mowed fields are usually farmers who have collected crop insurance due to the drought. Hope this clears it up.

That makes perfect sense. If they mow them down and don’t collect or harvest anything and leave it sitting in the field that is a no no for sure.

Thanks

Silage fields are fine to hunt….AS Hannibal stated, been hunting those for years. Actually, cut silage leaves less grain behind then combined fields, as the stalk and everything is cut and collected.

The mowed/chopped fields are the ones you cannot hunt.

I believe what John is talking about is what I have been reading about on other sites. Because of the drought farmers are collecting drought insurance money for fields that have been mostly wiped out. They must mow these fields and not harvest the crop. You cannot hunt these fields since that isn’t a normal farming practice. Sileage fields I believe are still ok to hunt since that is a normal farming practice.

Cut Silage Fields 09-10-2012 19:39
– – –
John,

Are you talking about cut silage fields that they just dump everything back in the field? For years Goose and Duck hunters have been hunting cut silage fields in the early parts of the season. I’m not trying to be contrary but this does not sound right unless there is some unique circumstance that makes this different than any other year and there is something unique being done during the cut of the field like not actually harvesting the silage and leaving it all in the field.

There must be a distinction that makes some fields considered “baited” because waterfowl hunters have been hunting these silage fields for as long as I can remember.

Can you clarify please?

Spoke with our landlord on Monday,we do have a pump,he started pumping water on 40 acres on Sunday, the wetlands does have water and the pool by the blind is nearly full. The recent rains have helped, the millett and smartweeds is looking good. The farm next to us,some 7000 acres, the owner had a sprinkler system and was harvesting corn last week. He said he has been working around the blinds, has seen teal.A friend of mine who does the air count for MCD,said there are reports of some teal moving into the Northern Mo. area.I am waiting for the greenheads.Good luck on the teal this weekend.

Teal Reports 09-04-2012 20:29

Seeing anything out there. I have heard of reports of Teal in Texas already but sure must be a pile of them still to come. I saw a few birds this past weekend but no huge numbers for sure. Hoping this little cold snap (if you can really call it that) will push a few of those little squadron’s south. Looking forward to the opener on Saturday.

We have been pumping some water and have a reasonable amount of water to entice the teal once they get here. We will wait to fill it the rest of the way and flood our corn a little later…….just in times for those big, fat, juicy Greenheads!!!!!

Scouted duck lake just north of Chillicothe 09-04-2012 09:24

The rain over the weekend came so slowly there was no run off where I scouted. The good news… Hopefully the beans will start filling out.
Our little lake has lots of smart weed but not a drop of water. The ground still has huge cracks that will need to fill.
It’s a start!

Good luck with teal.
