Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
Mon. the 26th. Was set up just after shooting light. Had 4 D & 1 H gaddie by 0800. Wind died down. Didn’t take another shot until noon when the wind picked up again. Shot another drake gaddy, 1 D sprig, and 1 goose by 1:00. Sat around for another hour just to watch the birds land into the spread. What a day! Going again
tommorrow (Fri). Rolly99…You plannin’ on going out soon?

Greenhead- Big Water 12-26-2005 22:42
Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 40-45 Degrees
After hunting on private ground 12/23 and 12/24 with no luck, my dad and I took off for Greenhead this morning. We had an absolute blast: Lots of birds once the wind came up and all different types. We ended with 3D and 1H Hollywoods, 2H Gads, 1 beauty Drake Redhead, 1D ringneck, 1D Mallard. We should have easily limited, but with the winds it was tough to hit them. What a great way to finish the Christmas holiday.

Feetdown,
God Bless you all,

With Christmas shopping and alot of good hunting, I’ve been off the computer lately. To Rolly 99…..This is Nevada …it will ice up one week melt the next…if not break a hole…they will come..You’ve seen by now…NVchuckar….That happends I’ve seen it befor. The same time you were at the sink, I was at stillwater. Best hunting I’ve had in 10 years. Almost all drakes. John Cunningham…….Thinks all the drakes are over there……..there not …because I’ve shot most of them over here. Been hunting from 12-10 to 12-23 with limits, every day. 12-16…12-17 very tough. To all …if the ice is too bad, go to the lake to the south?

Humboldt River 12-23-2005 22:24
Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
Completely by accident, found an area upstream from Winnemucca that had a significant number of ducks. Couldn’t figure out why they are there, but had a great shoot, killing seven greenheads in about one hour. Lost two birds after dropping them on the opposite side of the river before I realized the depth of the water – WAY over the top of my waders, and the bank was too steep for the dog to climb. Even with this success, still seeing a majority of ducks as hens. I appreciate the opinion from John Cunningham, but admitting that all the boys hang out together in California is pointing toward a California stereotype that I ain’t gonna touch. I know they aren’t chasing girls, because all of those are in Nevada!

Greenhead/Sprig 12-22-2005 21:22
Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 35-40 Degrees
Got home on Sat. Dec 17th for 2 weeks leave. Went to Greenhead on Sun. After some serious glassing I spoted a smidg of open water in the middle of the sprig. Got half way there on someone elses hard work (ice-breaking), broke ice for about another 1/4 mile to the open spot, scared up a hundred or so birds of various type, and was set up around 12:30 had my limit by 3:00…3 drake greenheads, 2drake & 1 hen gaddy, and one drake cinnamon. Being a relative rookie, is it possible that drakes tend to have more of a survivability instnct? Meaning they fly where it’s harder to get to them I.E. in the middle-most area that has open water. Just a thought. HAPPY HOLIDAYS

John,

I have lived there in CA, and I only come to hunt in the Sac. valley and Los Banos. I would never live there again. I could go on and on as to why. It’s a border scurmish. We usually do quite well. But it is wierd that two of us and others who did not post have had the same experience.

C’mon….the Nevada drakes aren’t stupid! They’re all here in balmy California trying to poke our good look’in Calli hens….can you blame them? The weathers great, plenty of food, sweet look’in mama’s….and if you had a choice you’d be here too!!!

NV Chuckar,

I had that problem at Greenhead a couple of weeks ago. Lots of teal in flocks of 3-15 and very few drakes. I really try not to shoot hens, but sometimes it happens. Spoonies are fair game…

Glad you were able to get out. How were the roads today?

Humboldt Sink 12-18-2005 10:00
Cloudy, Winds Calm – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
Tried area where saw widgeon working on 12/11. Never saw a duck until 11:45, but then fairly decent flight thereafter. Ducks sitting on the ice and in pockets they’ve kept open, but most never moved the entire day. Shot six (4 widgeon, 1 sprig, and 1 greenhead). Plenty of dark geese moving around, trying to find something to eat, but none ventured near me. Swans are really staying tight – vast majority never moved from their open holes in the Sink, and those that did simply flew from one opening to another. All ducks shot were in poor shape. It looks like they haven’t eaten since it began to freeze up earlier in the week. Barring a warm up, believe they will be leaving soon.
For anyone who is still posting, could you take the time to help with a survey? For the second weekend in a row, the gender of ducks flying was about 90/10, with the drakes hard to find. I had groups of widgeon, sprig, and mallards up to nine birds each with not a male among them. Even the spoonies were nearly all female. My question is: Are all duck hunters practicing voluntary restraint, and shooting only drakes? If not, I’d love to know the biological reason why the vast majority of ducks flying around the Humboldt Sink are female. Please post and let me know who is or is not shooting hens. Thanks.

Humboldt Sink 12-12-2005 08:46
Cloudy, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees
Afternoon shoot at the Sink. Scouted an area that had mallards working, and set up at about 1:45. Pretty decent flight. Shot three greenheads and one gadwall, but could have limited if hens had been on my menu. Seemed like every duck that worked the decoys was a suzie, and one hen sprig lit in the decoys. Noticed that farther out in the flooded salt cedar, most of the ducks were widgeon, and had I had more time, would have moved to mix the bag up further. Several flocks of geese also moving around, and got a double out of one bunch that got too close. If anyone needs to fill a swan tag and doesn’t mind a pretty good walk – there are still thousands of birds on the Sink. Many seem to move from the Sink to Humboldt Lake, and back again.

Hunted Sunday AM. Walked in up in the NW corner and had to bust ice on the way in and out. Set up before sunset on a point in an area where I had jumped ducks on the way in. Got four ducks(2 Gadwall & 2 Spoonies) and one Honker. Packed it in around eight o’clock. Not much flying at that point. I would suspect it will remain frozen out there for the rest of the year. There was about a 1/4 of an inch on the way out and its supposed to get cold the next few nights. Question: Where to hunt after the water freezes?

Hunted some private ground on Friday, 11/25. We kicked about 50 mallards out and none came back. Saturday 11/26, we went to Greenhead to the sprig pond. There were a few birds and we managed 4, 2 widgeon, 1 sprig, and 1 buff. For the perfect ducky conditions, a strong north wind, there really weren’t very many birds. Is anyone else hunting? If you are, why aren’t you posting?

Stillwater NWR 11-24-2005 00:31
Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 35-40 Degrees
Went out to the refuge on Friday and Saturday to help with a research project on Swans. A grad student for NM was looking for parasites in swns that had never been found in N. Amer. We had a pretty good group on both days and managed to collect 12 swan samples and the blood vessel parasites were found. The swan migration appears to be about two weeks behind schedule this year and few swan were seen on the area. The aerial survey I flew on the 14th only recorded 426 swans on STillwater and 610 on the Humboldt WMA. A call to my friend in Utah revealed that they still had 40,000 on the GSL on thier last survey on the 15th.

While duck numbers increased to over 91,000, most of the birds stay on the refuge once they are disturbed in the hunting area and don’t come out until after dark. There are lots of cans now, but almost all were recorded on Stillwater Point Reservoir.

Results of the November survey by area should be on the NWA site by mid-week. Next month I will have to fly the area a little earlier in the month, because I have to go to NM for a week-long aerial survey in the middle of the month.

Franklin Lake 11-24-2005 00:03
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 0-10 Degrees – Ice
Went to Franklin Lake on 11/15-16, but temperatures dropped to 8 degrees the day we arrived. Had a great shoot with the highest number of sprig I have seen in NV in over 5 years. Interestley, they were 99% drakes. Saw less than a dozen hens the whole day. The next night tempratures were 12 and the marsh froze up pretty solid. Looks like over 90% of the ducks are gone for this year. The last day only saw three sprig. Did see a fair number af mallrds way out in the marsh, but only managed a pair of adult greenheads. When I flew the area in Oct. there were probably over 30K ducks on the area. In past years, when the lake has had water there were lots of Cans, but this was not the case this year.

Remember that the north half of this area is private property and NOT open to the general public. Only the south half is a state wildlife area.

Hope for another good water year next year.

Franklin Lake 11-13-2005 10:00
Cloudy, High Winds – 45-50 Degrees
Water levels at Franklin have dropped substantially since early October. Much of the then submerged duck food is now on mud flats. About half the number of ducks there now as compared to a month ago. Majority of ducks are sprig and spoonies, which poses a challenge when the limit is one sprig and spoonies are not the duck of first choice. Managed three ducks (greenhead, sprig, widgeon) in the last hour and a half on 11/11, and picked up four more (sprig, three greenheads) the morning of 11/12, but had to leave at noon when the ducks were really starting to move.

Great Salt Lake – Utah 10-31-2005 19:33
Cloudy, Occassional Rain Showers – 60-65 Degrees
Just got back from a very fun and successful trip to hunt with a very close friend of mine on the Great Salt Lake. In four days we managed to shoot six limits of ducks, with the fastest limit taking only 19 minutes. Tom is the best duck hunter I have ever hunted with and he sure didn’t let me down at all this trip. I tried using my Ithaca 12 ga. side-by-side with a set of 28 ga. Seminole Chamber Mates. They worked great and on one the first day I was able to kill a limit with only nine shots.

Before we hunted over there, I got to participate in the weekly aerial swan survey on the GSL. The week before they had counted only 358 swans. This week the numbers had jumped to over 9,000 birds with most of them on the Bear River Refuge and adjacent Bear River Club. While we weren’t counting ducks on this flight, we estimated that there were well over 1 million birds on the lake. Normally they have started to leave by now, but with warmer weather they appear to have slowed their migration

We did get rained out for one day, which allowed use to spend some time and $$$ in the new Cabela’s store over there.

Hope to get down to Stillwater some time this week to see if I can get a can and a few redheads for the freezer. Will also try to get a teal shoot at the Carson Lake if time permits.

Next flight for western Nevada is on the 14th, and the swans should be coming in by them. I expect that duck numbers will be starting to decline by then.

Don’t forget the Nevada Waterfowl Association dinner on November 12th, they need your support.

Cloudy, Winds Calm – 45-50 Degrees
Saw a few birds at Stillwater on Nevada Day, and managed 1 Drake Gadwall in limited hunting. Found the spot for Saturday, mission accomplished.
Saturday morning a bit of rain and really light winds and no one in the parking lot, yes. Bad news, however, upon getting to the pond, an annoying flashlight from the spot I wanted. We were forced into a spot out of the middle of the pond and we were a complete afterthought for the ducks. I wished for a better time, since a first-timer youth was with me…We managed a drake mallard for him at another location, and he did enjoy himself. He is excited to go again, which is encouraging!

Humboldt Sink 10-24-2005 23:43
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
Plenty of ducks at the Humboldt Sink, but calm, clear, warm weather isn’t making many of them want to take flight. Also, the lower river area is simply too large with those conditions to concentrate the few ducks that come off the open water. Managed only one greenhead and several mosquito bites.

Western and NE NV 10-20-2005 10:42
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
I just finished fly the Ruby Valley and western Nevada on Monday. Water levels are better than last year, although they are dropping on Franklin Lake and the Humboldt Sink. Even though there was a good spill of water from Rye Patch, no water made it into the Toulon Unit of the Humboldt WMA and the area remains dry for this year. Water is flowing into both Stillwater and Carson Lake and should at least through the middle of next month. There are a lot of birds at Walker Lake, but they would be hard to hunt. I am putting the results at the end of the report, but not sure how this will work. If you want to see the numbers, check the NWA website later in the week.

I shot the Carson Lake last Saturday. I didn’t get setup until noon and managed to shoot 4 birds by 4:00. Looked like a great day in the morning, but the wind kept shifting and then finally died. Had to set up twice to get the right spot to get a few shots.

We had a great shoot in Canada again this year, but not sure that two weeks was enough. Did manage to shoot a Atlantic brant while I was there, which was kind a new wrinkle for me and the first for that species. Water conditions are the best that I have seen in over ten years of going up there and could set the stage for a good production year in 2006.

I will be doing some fly in Utah and New Mexico on waterfowl surveys later in the seaosn. It will be interesting to see how their bird numbers compare to Nevada’s

LOOKS LIKE IT DIDN’T WORK. THE NUMBERS ARE THERE, BUT ARE HARD TO INTERPRET. CHECK THE nwa WEBSITE NEXT WEEK AND THEY SHOULD BE POSTED.

Franklin Lake 10-19-2005 13:47
Cloudy, High Winds – 50-60 Degrees
Opening at Franklin good on Saturday, phenominal on Sunday. Wind on Saturday seemed to keep ducks from flying. With copious amounts of duck food in shallow water, wind couldn’t get any wave action going, so most birds held tight. South end (Saturday shoot) characterized by lots of sprig, so took til noon to limit. On Sunday, went further north into some pot holes and limited on four Greenheads and three drake Gadwall. Franklin had tens of thousands of ducks getting very fat, contrary to the report published in the Reno Gazette Journal which said ducks don’t go through NE NV any more. (Similar problem to today’s picture in that newspaper of a shorthair retreiving a “chukar” – it was NOT a chukar) Problem with Franklin is the 6000 foot elevation – it gets cold early and ducks usually gone by early November. Already some very light ice on the Sunday morning shoot.

HEY! I responded to post by Target as well as a gentleman out of Las Vegas. We found on this trip that this guy was beyond BS. He just Lies. Have hunted most mid-west states Miss, LA Ark, for years. Three times to So America. Goose hunt Oregon allmost every week end Mid Nov thru season close, and am 60 yrs old. I have hunted a bunch. Worst trip ever, if you throw out two tours in Nam. Lucky all came home alive. Lucky the Wardens gave our guns back. If you want all the details you just need to ask. Been home 5 days and still so mad it would take a novel to tell you about this clown. It would make a great article for Waterfowler on who not to go with, and what not to do. It does not matter what queations you ask, if the answers were Lies.

Cloudy, Winds Calm – 50-60 Degrees
Nice opening day to duck hunt with a decent breeze, however, the birds did not really cooperate. The shooting seemed to end around 8 am, which it usually will last through the morning on the opener. The guys with boats seemed to do ok, but not a hot opener! Hope to get out this weekend.

Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 50-60 Degrees
Spent three days last week hunting waterfowl in Alberta near Edmonton. High number of ducks still in central Alberta. They haven’t started to move yet, especially with tremendous habitat in the area. Edmonton had 21 inches of rain over the summer, and there was water and food everywhere. The farmers can’t get into their fields due to the mud, and the ducks are feasting on the grain and peas laying on the ground. Ducks Unlimited staff are looking for a great hatch next year with even average winter precipitation, since the soil moisture content is high and the frost seal needed for spring runoff should be excellent. With good weather patterns, we should see the numbers of fat ducks in Nevada increase as the fall winds on.

To Jack on the Rocks and Desert Ducks. First to Jack on the Rocks: Great to hear that you are going to the volunteer recruitment/appreciation event in Las Vegas. We are holding similar events in Elko on the 25th, and Reno on the 30th, both of which I am planning to attend. Three in one week was more than my schedule could handle, so I won’t make it to yours. Hope you have a good time. I know that Clark County has several events that they are looking for more volunteers – Mesquite, Boulder City, Las Vegas Flappers, a Las Vegas sponsor event, and the main Las Vegas banquet. Clark County has so much potential for raising huge money for the ducks, that it is one of our focus areas for big growth.

To Desert Ducks: I’m not sure what you mean by a “Mallard Restriction Project”. It is our policy never to restrict mallards from coming in to your decoys. Coots are a different story. Seriously, in the Lahontan Valley the newest project we are commencing is on the Desert Gun Club near Hazen, though I have no specifics as to exactly what wetland enhancement is being planned. We have done work in the past at Stillwater and the Canvasback. Give me some more info on your inquiry, and I’ll get back to you.

I agree with Jack on the Rocks – Steptoe should be great when completed. DU was looking for a completion date in early spring, but the contractor is behind schedule. We have been waiting since then for NDOW to give the approval for a dedication of the marsh, but still not there yet due to the delays. Nevertheless, Steptoe will be a well engineered set of nine ponds, surrounded by associated wetlands and grassland. With the larger reservoir to the south, should provide excellent hunting opportunities, though it may take another year for all of the emergent vegetation to mature and provide the habitat we expect. Should produce lots of ducks in the spring and summer, due to the excellent cover. DU is also putting new efforts into the Ruby Marshes to create better water management so we can periodically dry up and flood portions of the marsh only Mother Nature has had control over. Without that control, that marsh will not produce the duck food that it is capable of producing.
Thanks for the good thoughts on Ducks Unlimited – it is always nice to hear others support the organization that I feel so passionately about. I serve as a Regional Vice President and I am on the Board of Directors, so if anyone has questions or needs information from DU, please let me know.

To respond to Desert Ducks about the Mason Valley project. DU is paying for the project with many partners. The total outlay is $3 million. For particulars, you can contact Virginia Getz, DU biologist for Western Nevada, or Mark Biddlecomb, Director of Conservation for the Western Regional Office (WRO) of DU. Both work out of the WRO in Rancho Cordova, California. If you need their contact information, please let me know, or I can find out any specific information for you by letting me know what you need.

Statewide notes and Carson Lake 01-25-2005 11:44
Cloudy, Heavy Fog – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
Hunters in Nevada need to be aware that there is a move afoot by the FWS and several states to make some significant changes in the Hunting season frameworks. They want to drop the season length by 15% (91-days)even in the best years and drop the limit by 1 bird. Neather of which has been biologically proven to help the birds – “just preception”. If you would rather have the longer season and the opportunity to hunt when the birds are available, you need to make your wishes known.

I just finished flying my last statwide survey for Nevada in January, and inspite of the cold, fog, and poor hunter success. the count was above last year. Good numbers of birds in the south. Statwide I counted 67,000 ducks and 17,000+ geese this January, compared to 56,000 and 20,000 last year. I will still be flying for the FWS and other states next year, but not Nevada. Kyle Neill will be taking over Nevada surveys(Dec.- May).

I am about ready to finalize the data from Carson Lake (Greenhead Club) and it appears that the number of hunters and ducks taken this year was the lowest since 1994. The average birds per hunter day was just about in the middle of the last 11 years, so not as bad as many supposed.

I had a good year with some limits and some real bummers. Did much better at Carson Lake than Stillwater, except for swans. We took five at Stillwater for 100% success everytime we tried. My contacts in other states reported the same slower season except for California wher my contact had one of his best seasons and I did well the one time I went over.

LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON ALREADY.

Norm

If I could shoot in the city limits I could have limited out in about three shots this morning. Hundreds of greenheads in the thermal ponds off of College Parkway, behind my office, I was pratcticing my calling this morning, as wave after wave of Mallards were comming in. I think these birds came off of Washoe when it froze, I dont think they migrated down. These are resident birds that never get shot at because they belong to the No-Hunting water-ways club, but it is sure fun to watch them set their wings and come in.

I called GH yeaterday and they said that only one goose has been taken in the last two weeks, no other birds have been taken.

I hunted the Truckee last weekend, there are a few birds but access is terrible. We lost a Gadwall because of the snow but we shot seven Quail, so it wasnt a complete bust. Some of the snow drifts along the river were over three feet, it was too hard on my dog to get up and down the banks.

I am thinking of hunting the river again tomorrow, all these mallards have gotten me longing for some action!

Nevada is a good state for hunting, you just have to put your time and money into it.

Fallon is is our best area for duck hunting but we are in our eighth year of drought. We have been getting above average snowfall for the past month so mabey things are looking up finnally.

In a good year all areas produce birds, in bad years you have to find water and feed.

Ive shot birds on all of the northern hunt areas except Scripps, my favorite is Toulon but I havent hunted it in three years, no water. Greenhead in Fallon has been the best place to get ducks for the past four years, its been the only place with water.

You will need a small boat with an electric motor for early season then a mud motor from the middle of November on. You can hunt without a boat but its fun to explore and get away from everyone. Next year I am getting some type of canoe and kayak, small and mobil.

Chukar is king in Nevada, I am an upland hunter, who would like to be a duck hunter.

You can hunt Quail, Chukar, Sagehen, Huns, Ducks and Geese all in the same day.

Two years ago I shot, two Huns, Two Quail, two Chukar and a Drake Shoveler on opening day. The next day we went out to GH and I shot three more ducks.

This year was the worst year I have had for ducks with only five for the year. However it has been my best year for Chukar with 15 in the first two weeks and I have shot over 20 quail. No geese this year they are all in town.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Gundog, My name is Mark Burlington, I currently live in Washington State. I am retirering from the Navy, and have spent a time working out at the base in Fallon over the past 20 years. I am a avid hunter, like yourself and am looking into several jobs in the Fallon area. I am also a member of WWA (washington waterfowlers Assoc) and a field editor for the web site. I have four labs and two english pointers, two of which were the mid atlantic region shoot to retrieve champions 98/99. I love to hunt and train dogs in my spare time. Can you tell me about the duck hunting in Fallon. Stillwater and so on. Would you recommend a move. I ask this because hunting is a very important part of my life. I can not live in a place without DUCKS. Thanks for your time.

Decided to see if we could get some geese along the Carson River, we never found any birds on huntable stretches of the river, lots of birds on private “No Hunting” streches.

I was wondering, does anybody know who the geniuses were that sold all of the land along our rivers to the “No Hunting-No Trespassing” land owners? Why dont we have any access to our rivers? We stopped and asked and were told “no not ever”.

I might not give my money to Nevada next year, I know alot of people who dont even buy a hunting license in Nevada any more. If it werent for chukar and Quail I might quit hunting in Nevada all together my self. Instead of putting my money and time into triing to find some ducks and geese, I think it would be worth it to take a trip to Manitoba or Mexico and fill my freezer full of meat and fire more rounds in one weekend than I do in three seasons. Who am I kidding if I could afford to hunt any where else, I wouldnt be writting this. LOL. I always get frustrated this time of year, too much ice and not enough birds, well thats waterfowling Nevada Style.

The best shotgun in the world is just wall decoration when the birds are gone.

Someone please post and tell me they got their limit over the weekend, so that I have some hope that the season is not over with.

First real good shoot of the year. Lots of mallards arrived prior to last weekend with the cold weather. Excellent mid afternoon shoot on 12/4, bagging 7 greenheads in about 90 minutes. Ducks desperately looking for water, and the ice was very thick and tough to break.

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 10-20 Degrees – Open Water
Cold. That is the word of the morning. We arrived at nutgrass at 5:30 and set up 18 bigfoots and put out 5 mallards. The bigfoots we put on the edge of the ice, half of them with there feet on and the other half without. On the duck decoys we pounded a piece of bamboo stake into the mud with a bungee cord connected to it and the decoys, it made a lot of motion and worked like a champ. Hunted until 11:00 and ended up with an easy limit of geese, and 5 ducks, (4 green wing teal and a drake mallard). The birds were not very smart and it looks like it will be promising over the weekend. Good luck, and be careful on the ice and in the mud.
