Cloudy, Heavy Fog – 25-30 Degrees – Ice
Hunted for 45 minutes this afternoon after finding the roads at least out to the west to be rather muddy and slick. Be careful going out there!

Found a pothole with some open water and had four different groups take a look. One group of mallards made it by without a shot. What a mess up on my part, but oh, well! Ended with one beautiful drake widgeon for 45 minutes of hunting in the fog and freezing temps.

Does anyone read this anymore. Where is everyone that used to post in NV?

My friend Dave must be hunting a different part of Stillwater than I am! I have been taking swan hunters out there for the first half of November and while we have had no trouble killing our swans, we have only shot two ducks in five trips and have seen very few duck flights. Several times I have been one of the first people out there and have watched good numbers of ducks fly into the Refuge, never to return during shooting hours. Swan hunting is good, but with each trip the swans are getting less interested in the decoys.

Best time to kill a swan right now, is after 3:00 p.m. My last flight had about 1,00 swans on the area, and duck numbers dropped below 40,000. Watch out for the pintails, the season doesn’t start again until Nov. 30. Also Canvasback season CLOSES on Dec. 8th.

The refuge people are continuing to move water out of the refuge to the hunting area and neww areas will be getting water for at least another month.

The hunting has been great in the great Stillwater marsh!High water levels, and a abundance of food have really been paying off for the hunters. This season has been a veritable showcase of species, and most notably;canvasbacks. The marsh has been seeing a large number of hunters[comparatively],with a great deal of success coming from the lower nutgrass area.Bring your swan tag!these last few storms have brought a rather large number of swans to the area, and hunting should be good.Be careful,as the dutch bill area to the west of Stillwater has a TON of sprig, and as you already know, are closed until the end of the month.I expect to see hunter numbers drop dramatically,as the Greenhead club opens up to boats on the 20th of november. The hunting should only get better as the season progresses,so bring your gun,and a handful of steel, and put it on `em…Happy hunting, and be safe!!!!

Hunted the Big water ponds out of a boat and only managed 3 birds for two hunters. We hunted till 1pm and killed our first widgeon at 11am. Really slow, but there are some birds out there. We just need some wind to move them off of the no boat areas!!!

Good luck and feedown!

Carson Lake – Greenhead Hunting Club 11/9-10/04 11-15-2004 11:40
Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 50-60 Degrees
Shifted over the the Carson Lake this week after a slow duck hunting week at Stillwater last week. On Tuesday, it took until 11:15 to find where some ducks were working and got set up by 12:15. Had a NWA meeting so I had to pick up at 4:00, but managed to shoot 6 ducks. The next day, I went to where I had seen some birds working the day before and was set up by 12. Picked up at 4:30 with only one duck. What a difference. Could have shot 5-7 pintails though, so it wasn’t completely dead, just the wrong birds. BE CAREFUL, there are a lot of pintails floating around in some areas down here and the season doesn’t open back up again until Nov. 30.

Talked to friends in both Utah and New Mexico and they are reporting VERY slow duck hunting this year. They might get one fair shoot and then it drops to nothing.

I fly tomorrow in Nevada and the data should be up on the NWA website in a few days. The first of next month, I will be traveling to New Mexico to help them with their aerial surveys for about a week. Get to Fly the whole state to count waterfowl — should be a lot of fun, but no hunting this year. Too slow is the report.

NWA Fallon Dinner 11-15-2004 11:31
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
This last Saturday, the NWA had its fund raiser in Fallon to a sold-out crowd of dedicated supports. While the numbers aen’t in yet, DeAl Dankers and his crew did a great job and it looks like they raised a lot of $$$ for Nevada’s wetlands.

NWA has been a key player in getting the Carson Lake transferred to the State of Nevada in the past year, and has spent over $30,000 on legal fees to move the process along. There was an agreement signed in the Governor’s office a couple of weeks ago to put the project on the fast track.

NWA is also spending a considerable amount of money to get a full duty water transfer to the wetlands through the State Engineer’s office. If successful, it will mean a lot more water will be flowing into the wetland the the future. In the past, the Pyramid Lake Indian Tribe has held the State and the FWS hostage and made them take a reduced water transfers for any water purchased for the wetlands. They have been getting a portion of every acre-foot of water that we purchase. NWA expects to hae to spend over $100,000 of it funds to push this issue through the courts, but if successful, it will mean a lot more water for the ducks. If you want to help, contact the NWA.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 50-60 Degrees
We hunted the Stillwater Area this week and a group of us took 5 swans and about a dozen ducks in three days. Swan numbers were building and the hunting was great for them. The duck hunting though was generally very slow. On the last day we shot the one swan that we needed and never fired a shot at a duck in over 6 hours. There were a fair number of hunters out, but I heard more shots from chukar hunters in the Stillwater mountains that I did from the marsh.

A lot of ducks on the area, but most move straight into the refuge when a car drives up and don’t come out until after shooting time is over.

By Saturday, most of the swans were reverting back to their old tricks of setting in the refuge until about 4:00 pm and then coming out. Still if you need a swan, now is the time to go.

Wow, with all of the weather, I thought that alot of guys would have been out hunting this week. No posts, I guess every one has to work for a living like me. I am going nuts, I have been trying to get out of the office all week. Well I will be out at GH tomorrow for an afternoon hunt, I hope the weather does’nt get too nice.

Just got off the phone with GH they say that a few honkers and some snows have moved in. Only one snow has been reported so far. They hav been averaging 1.5 birds/hunter with an average of 33 hunters per day. That sounds slow to me but ya cant kill ducks from the couch.

Carson Lake – Greenhead Hunting Club 10-16-2004 21:44
Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – Over 70 Degrees
This area had a great opener with over 475 hunters on opening weekend and over 1800 birds taken. Final numbers haven’t been received yet.
I wasn’t around for the opening weekend so went out on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, and the bottom dropped out. Hunter aver is around 1 bird per hunter and almost no flight. Today I was set up by 7 and didn’t fire my first shot until 10:15. Managed to get 4 birds but it was a long time between shots and you could miss any.
I will be flying the area on a survey this Tuesday to get the after season opener bird totals for the main areas in north western Nevada. I spent much of today glassing the Sprig Ponds and it appeared that bird numbers in this area are way down. You should be able to get the bird totals on the Nevada Waterfowl Association website as soon as I get back from Salt Lake (10/25) and maybe before if I get off the stick before I leave.
Today was the opener for the goose season and at 5 p.m. only four geese has come out of the area. Did see the first small flock of snow gees this morning.

Had a great hunt in Saskatchewan this year. Poor production on White-fronted and Snow geese reduced hunting success, but still were able to get all we wanted in the period form Sept. 23-Oct. 1. Roos goose production appeared to be some what better, based upon the birds that we took. There were lots of Sandhill cranes as usual for the areas we hunted and we managed to bag 17 incidental to our goose hunting. While we were there,we also got to see 4 rare whooping cranes. The grain harvest was about three weeks behind because of the cool wet August and September and farmers were having trouble keep the birds off of the grain swaths. There was more water in the potholes than I have seen in a number of years at this time of the year and if the winter will cooperate, we could have a great duck production year.
Looking forward already to next year.

Got three more Chukar today, my son got one too. I screwed up the quail, I should have followed the dog,DOH! I hate when I do that, we would have gotten more birds but we were out of water and to tired to keep going. We got our birds at the end of the hunt, some really small birds mixed in with some mature ones, it almost makes me think they had a late hatch. We had a good time.

It was way too hot for duck hunting, few birds, no action, slow, slow, slow.

I got a Can and a Grey the first 15 min then nothing, I was packed up and heading out by 9AM. This is typical for this time of year, after the opener you have to wait for some weather and new birds, I knew better, but this was when I could go and so I went, you cant kill ducks on the couch.

Jack, Greenhead is a duck club in Fallon on hwy 95 south of the Naval Air Station on Pasture Lane Road. Its open to the public, the cost is $15 per day or $50 for a season pass.

I was surprised that I didnt have any GWT buzz me, I did get some Buffle Heads blow right by me I never got a chance to shoot at em, right over the decoys too.

Called GH and was told that 411 hunters signed in for the opener with 1,805 ducks taken for a 4.4 bird/hunter average. I was also told that they have had good numbers of hunters all week. They think Saturday will be very bussy with the Goose opener.

I will be in the marsh tomarrow, I will post my results and reflections on the day when I get back.

Nice wind to start off opening day at the Head. There were a ton of birds early. Shot a limit of 5 teal and two mallards. My dad was waiting for big birds and only ended with 4. All in all it was a good hunt, but the water is still just coming into the place. The water was really low. There were plenty of idiots and inconsiderate hunters out there. The guys that set up 75 yards from us and then smarted off when we asked them to move should never be allowed to hunt out there. It was not cool! However, we had a great day, and they did not ruin it! Jerks!

Saturday started out slow but we finally got into a bunch of Chukar, one covey was over 100, I got a triple but lost one of em in the creek bottom. Over all it was a fun time but after running up and down hills for two days I remember why I like duck hunting so much. Friday I will hit GH and Saturday I’ll be shooting Quail, I might even go goose hunting in the afternoon. Can we get some reports on the opener for GH or did everyone skip it like me.

The Youth Hunt was fun, we got a late start but managed to squeeze in amongst two other parties. The action was good for the first hour, then it quickly dropped off.

I thought it went well considering there just isnt alot of places to hunt ducks any more and GH looked to be about 1/3 full and thats generous.

Like I posted befor my son connected with four birds, one being his first Bull Sprig, that was cool and a great shot too. He had a few come into the dekes but he missed all the easy shots and made all of the passing shots. Most of the birds were GWT. it looked like the majority of kids were done by 9AM, some kids north of us were some shooting fools they limited out and even took a goose, I think they were picking up decoys by 8AM. I know their dad was quite the proud papa, those kids made some really good shots.

My son had a good time and made some great shots too, infact all of his birds were from some pretty spectacular shooting, one GWT almost landed at our feet. I am going to have to get in some practice, this might be the year he out shoots the old man.

I have to commend all of the hunters and their fathers for being accommodating and good sportsmen, it was a bit crouded but everyone got along and as far as I know there were no serious injuries or incidents. I took a few pellets to the shoulder and neck but nothing penetrated and after we yelled out our objections to the direction and angle of fire, corrections were made and we were never accosted by shot again.

I hope the opener is just as fun and safe, it will be for me I’ll be in the uplands chasing Chukar, Quail and Huns.

wwwwoowwwwwwwww, sea ducks on walker lake thats the best news i ve heard for a while…!!!!!.thank ya much gun dog ! my dad and my son and i dont get up to northern nevada much maybe fallon two times a year or stillwater to crack a swan if one should get a tag. oo wait a sec, or i should say attempt. but i shoot good!!! ha ha ,just ta leave a joke for dad .he~ll love that one . but rubies i hear are dry (franklin lake),for that matter but the marsh im almost sure is soaked.in the past i ve had good sucess just walking in and setting up about a half a dozen pintails and about 3 cin teal decoys off the brown dike .then this year was thinking about gettin real serioso. boat, dog, benelli etc.i got some real goodies down south thats where i do some shooting . i make sure i go out of the state for at least half the season.south dakota usually is very promising for 5lb greenheads with jewlery ya know its a lot of fun .the opener this year will be probably hiko farm ponds .and o yeah just sssshhhhh, just north of franklin lake there is a couple of hot springs on a guys farm (been trying to get to meet the man bot had no luck yet at that)10 miles north of there full of big big greenheads .theres a good spot like i promised ya .another if you get south sunnyside,is missing some water but looks verey good bot ill warn ya this place on the opener has a lot of traffic but is soooo good for the first two days, that the who cares about traffic sydrome comes in after the first flock comes by. but there is a high density of waterfowl in that area, way more than hiko ,overton, and my southern areas .i have a gggggreat spot down south to .looking forward to this season willin to give yall a hand (please excuse any offensive farm language)and help ya fill some bags remember if you have any trouble during the season with decoys or calling techniques let us know asap be glad to help .gosh cant even imaine sea ducks on walker lake. they wait a minute ive heard this before they blow over during westerly winds through the sierras and over walkermountains heard of em in mono lake to .? here is to you gun dog is there fresh water clams in that lake if know there food source that ll be good reason forem being in there. brock perry greenheads live infear and pintails hate to be greenheads.

I hunt dove north of Reno and around Winemucca, this year I didnt have alot of time to travel for dove. I have a great private spot 30 min from my driveway so when the birds didnt show up I spent the time getting ready for the up comming season.

My son will be shooting ducks in three days, I think I’m more excited than he is. I will call you soon, If your looking for some info on duck hunting up here you should check out Walker Lake, I hear that it is holding good numbers of birds and alot of divers, I am planning on at least one hunt there this season, I hear you can hunt Harlequin and other sea ducks late in the season, it dont make sense to me why sea ducks would venture this far inland but what the heck, it might be worth it. You cant find em if you dont get out and look for em.LOL

Checked out GH yesterday for the Youth Hunt, not very much water yet, less than the same time last year. They are filling the place up, but it will take some time. Still Water might be a better spot for the youth hunt.

They burned alot of the cattails, there will be more open water this year, when they get some water into it. Not alot of birds yet eighther.

The rain and wind from a few weeks ago combined with a few cold mornings must have sent the dove south. We hunted our favorite spot, an evening hunt and a morning hunt, my son shot at one bird. The worst part is that my dog tore her ankle open on some barbwire, so she will be out of commission for a few weeks. Last year we shot a few limits at the same spot, we looked around at most of the valley’s, Red Rock, Lemmon, Hungry, and there are just no birds.

Just wanted to let everybody know that stillwater looks GREAT!!!!Went thru the entire marsh today, and it really looks promising.Goose lake looks outstanding, with lots of water, and tons of food. The south nutgrass is also looking great, with high water levels, and lots of resting waterfowl. The west marsh is looking good with lots of water in the Millens landing area.Major kudos to the USFWS,as the roads and structures are all in top shape, and look to be ready for another great season! There is also some work being done on tule lake, and rumor has it, that it might have some water in it by opening day.Things are definetly looking better in the marsh. If anyone has any specific questions or comments shoot me a e at naughty@oasisol.com .

Current Conditions in Northern Nevada 08-05-2004 17:01
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
Just wanted to give you all an update on habitat conditions that I observed late in July in Northern Nevada. Conditions are very dry and water levels are still going down. The Fernley, Alkali Lake, Humboldt, Scripps, and Franklin WMA’s are completely dry, as is the Fallon NWR. All other marshes are very low, with the best conditions observed on Stillwater NWR, Carson Lake (Greenhead Club), and to some extent the Mason Valley WMA. I did see some of the best widgeongrass (read that duck food) that I have observed in over 37 years on Walker Lake. As the water levels go down, it get better for waterfowl and this year was no exception. There were lots of ducks there last year, just a little hard to get at. The best food production was at the south end and the east shore line, but it is good all over.
Looks like about the same hunting season regulations as last if the Commission approves – 107-day duck season with a 60-day season within a season for Pintails and Canvasbacks. Remeber the early closure at Washoe Lake for geese, it caught some hunters off guard last year and cost big $$$$.
The is a move a foot to stabilize waterfowl regulations at the Flyway level. Some Council members are pushing this and it will result in somewhat simpler regulations but also in shorter seasons and lower bag limits. You need to keep you eyes on this one if you enjoy the longer seasons we have had in the past seven years.
Will let you know what I see after my Aug.17th flight. Heard that Greenhead will start to fill on Aug. 16th.

Bill, sorry to hear you are leaving. Since you and Jim are the only ones that post, except for Norm, I really enjoy reading how things are going in So. Nevada. I wish you the best of luck in beautiful Montana. What a great place…

The dismal season ended on a blessed note. Saturday ended with two nice Canadas and Sunday culminated in the taking of two nice teal. Was a little better than last year but not as good as in the past. Wish more were posting and communicating.

God Bless to all!

Jim, I do have mixed emotions about leaving. I have been here all my life, and have so many memories. I remember going up to Elko for deer with my dad in the early 70’s. We got our two bucks, two does, stopped off at Wildhorse and limited out on trout, then down to Sunnyside to hunt the streams. We brought home a possession limit (was that 20 per person then?) of mostly greenheads with a few suzies. I remember hunting the upper Pittman pond with my dad (funny, most of my fondest hunting memories are with him) and picking just Bull Sprigs. Or the day we hunted the flooded fields East to the pond for mallards. Like you, it is not about the killing for me, but I do enjoy at least watching the birds. Great memory this year was watching a Bull Can come into my dekes and land, not more than 15 yards away. It didn’t matter that he was out of season, it was amazing to just watch him. I think I got 63 ducks and 11 geese this year, so I can’t complain. There was a LOT of luck, especially with the geese, but it was a pretty good year considering how few birds we had in the valley.
I know Southern NV like the back of my hand, and all that knowledge won’t be much use in MT. Sure, I know how to find and hunt game, but getting to know the area will take time. When I do figure it out, remember, I have two spare bedrooms planned, so there will always be room for a NV guy (and wife and dog) to come up and enjoy the Northern birds, or the trout, or whatever else you might want to pursue. Next season might be a bust, since I will be building, but keep some space open for 2005! 🙂

Bill … You have been a great addition as a field editor and I look forward to your SO NV reports … with mixed emotions. Hehe.

On the one hand I’m glad to read of your at-least weekly success, on the other hand it’s almost more than I can stand because of our having the worst season in the past 8 there in the Valley … numbers wise.

I hate to sound philosophical about the fact that the enjoyment of the hunt is not in the nembers killed, at least it really isn’t for Carol and me. However, if he could talk, our yellar dawg Cappy would tell you that the 39 ducks we killed for an entire season (33 hunt days) is just plain pi$$ poor.

Carol and I wish you the best of luck in your move to MT. Happy retirement Sarge and may your days be filled with Elk, deer, antelope, trout, walleyes, ducks, geese and … wait a minute … if ya happen to find any affordable land nearby, e-mail us please!!!

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
Well, the last day of the season came, and gave me some surprises. No one was on the upper marsh with me at shooting time. There were two groups on the ponds, at least one on Nesbitt, and two groups (when I left) on Frenchy. I can count the number of ducks I saw flying on both hands. However, the geese were another story.
The main bunch (150+) got off the lake at first light and went to the private fields to the North. The wind was HOWLING out of the North. Around 9:15, another group of geese (45+) were working their way North along the highway and suddenly turned right at me. They passed about 80-90 yards, right over the top of me. That was odd enough, but they had set wings and were dipping and flipping right over me. Very unusual for that spot. They continued North, low, and I lost sight of them. About 9:45 it appears the main bunch got spooked, bad, off the private property, going with the wind at low altitude. They got to Nesbitt, and swung into the wind, then directly at me again. This time they came in (I have no goose dekes out) and started landing 10 yards outside of my dekes. Half landed, more were coming, the place was a madhouse! Finally a group swung over me, and I picked out two. Had to hit the second one again, (hit him too far back) Both hit the water belly up.
Other than that, there was almost no action, unless you count the Drake Can that ran the gauntlet of 3 shooters on the ponds and Nesbitt. He was going with the wind, so he was pretty safe. 6 shots barely scared him.
Lots of geese on the fields, and Upper Pahranaget. Lower Pahranaget is about 1/3 full, with water on the lower end now and reaching the shore-line cover. There were 18 swans and about 30 ducks on it, mostly teal and Cans. Gee, in about a week that would have been worth hunting.
This will probably be my last post in Nevada. I hope to build our new home in S/W Montana, starting in August, so I will be busy up there for about 6 months. We will then sell everything here and move there. I am an original Las Vegas Native, born and raised, but I won’t be looking back. Read the posts in Montana and you will understand why. Our property is on the East Fork of the Bitteroot River, 5 Acres, and we can’t wait. NVJim, I am sorry we didn’t hook up. Maybe see you at the Henderson D/U Banquet in Feb.

I may not be the best to answer this question. I have killed a swan in NV, and one in UT, but it was in the 70’s for NV. You have to apply for a tag, and I am not sure if Non-Residents can apply, but let’s assume they can. Last I looked, there were about 500 tags being given out. So, first you draw. You are limited on areas, and that is documented in the NV Regulations. Stillwater was the place in those days, and I think it still is. No swan hunting in Southern NV, to my knowledge. We have lots of em, but not allowed to hunt down here. You might want to look at UT also, as they talk about hunting swans like hunting rabbits. Still a draw system, but an easier hunt.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Check the NV Regulations for better information.

Bill Reed:

Question for you:
How would a non-resident, fellow waterfowler, go about hunting swan in Nevada? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Hey Norm, was that you flying over me at Pittman on 1/9? Someone in a single engine plane made three passes over the project, then went North.
Got another lucky goose, from a few that were sitting on my water before shooting time. Only one flew close enough to drop. Banded again.
Lots of teal, in flocks of 20-40. Seemed to be a few more mallards, but can’t really confirm. Upper pond is 40% ice. Lower pond is open, and birds were using it. Upper marsh is 30% ice. Nesbitt is pretty much open (80%) while Frenchy is about 70% ice. Not a lot of birds on the Pahranaget refuge. Met (got checked by) Eddie, the Ranger/Warden there. He checked me at Pittman. Very nice, considerate. Seemes to be working hard to get Pahranaget going again. He can come by my blind anytime.

January Aerial Survey 01-07-2004 23:16
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 45-50 Degrees
Got the first day of the Mid-winter Waterfowl Survey completed yesterday and wanted to file a report before I leave for the rest of the survey tomorrow morning (1/8) for three more days of flying the rest of the state.

The last ice buildup really moved the birds out. Both Stillwater and Carson Lake have now lost about 80% of their birds. Now with warmer temperatures on the way, it will scatter the few remaing birds out over the whole area. I saw a lot more open water than I had expected on the flight.

I will try and get some of the data from the rest of the flight together before I leave for a duck shoot in New Mexico on Monday and get on the NWA website if possible

Shot the CL this afternoon (1-3:45) and only managed three shots. Almost no flight in the Rice where I was at. Some shooting was heard to the north and to the west of my blind.

Cloudy, Snow Flurries – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
First hunt of the new year, and what a doozy!
Got set up VERY early, since it was a Sat. Thought I heard geese very close, but dismissed it because of where I was. 10 minutes after shooting time, looked across the water and see the geese. Jeeez, and I had been standing just a moment before. Change out shells, just as 5 birds lift off and head toward me. BBB’s drop two for two, with bands! Bout an hour later get buzzed by a group of drake greenwings, drop two for three. Hour later get buzzed by a flock of scaup, and again go two for three. That was all that flew, except for two single Pins that both dropped into my set.
Left early to look at the valley. No birds left on the project to speak of, maybe some divers in the middle. Saw no geese as I drove down the valley until I hit Pahranagat. A few geese were on the upper lake. Not many ducks to be seen either.
There was one change. Water is coming into the lower lake, and the birds are already using it. No cover to speak of, but maybe if a guy had a field blind?
Overall, very disappointing. Excellent weather, with a North wind and scattered snow. Just no birds to move around.

Mixed bag special today, one each mallard, spoonie, widgeon, gadwall, mallard and spoonie. Oh, I guess that’s two mallards and two spoonies! 6 birds total, 8 shots.
Birds really didn’t fly, I just didn’t miss, and was in the right spot for the few that did come up the valley. Didn’t see many birds, and only about 100 geese that got off the project at shooting time. Great weather, cloudy with a fairly strong south wind, but they didn’t want to fly. Not much ice except around the shore in the shady areas. Nesbitt was 98% open, and the ponds were getting a good supply of warm water.

Hunted the club this morning…No geese, really don’t know where they are. Last year at this time, we were loaded with honkers…
Had 3 doubles today and ended with 6 birds. Tomorrow should be good also.
