Upper Klamath/Agency Lake 11-25-2007 18:29
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 45-50 Degrees
Lauched at Agency Lake and headed to the new flooded area that is part of the Nature Conservancy project. Broke ice most of the way to the N/W dike and breezed through the cut. Water level is very good and should’nt be a problem for those with standard outboards.
Ice conditions worked to our advantage as large numbers of waterfowl drained into open areas. The entire area was active with huge amounts….thousands…of widgies, cans, malards and divers. Widge’s accounted for most of the numbers. The entire area is loaded and active despite clear and calm weather conditions. Good to see the migraters are finally making their entrance into the basin.

Siltcoos 11-25-2007 15:18
Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 45-50 Degrees
Well, I made my first trip to Siltcoos yesterday. Man have I missed going over there. I really love that lake. The Bluebills are scarce right now, there are a few on the lake but not the normal amount by any means. We mostly had opportunities at Buffleheads through the day. I did end up with 3 scaup and 2 buffies for the day. The Salmon fisherman help keep the birds moving and there was a good amount of shooting on the lake, I watched the guys on Booth Island nail a few. We hung out until about 2pm then headed home. How everyone else do?

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
We didn’t have much luck this morning. Very few birds to speak of. Hunted the east side of the lake, there were a few small groups of Mallards that gave us a small look but for the most part we just sat and watched thousands of Geese fly over us. Oh well, it was good sit training for one of my young dogs.

Lots of rain over last weekend. now it has really cooled off. this moring brings a heavy fog bank. I hear it is supposed to be like this through sunday.

I did run down to McCormick slough this morning at around 8 am. They said there were about 45 hunters out this morning.
I sat and listend to the slough and did hear a lot of shooting. So i am guessing that there has been a good number of ducks that i have moved in.
I think that if the weather stays like this the birds should be on the move for the next couple of days.
I think this is a good chance to get out there and really get on the birds. Looks to me like some of these are notherns moving through.
Everyone have a good thanksgiving and make sure you are safe out there.

Wow, the rain has hit and the rivers are full. The Mohawk is up about 7 feet in the past couple of days and the ponds are full. Great bird action this morning, and they responded well to calling. We shot 6 Greenheads and a Widgeon this morning over the pond. My neighbors up the street we doing a lot of shooting as well. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and the season starts in earnest for me this week. Its hear, the weather is cruddy and I’m loving it. Hit em hard and be safe….

McCormick Slough 11-14-2007 18:31
– – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
Cold this morning. 20 degress.
Even had a little ice forming around the decoys.
Hunted McCormick this morning with decent success. Shot a mallard, teal and 2 gadwalls. missed 1 shovler and passed on 2 buffleheads. so there was a chance for a limmit.
Not many ducks though moving around the slough but did see a lot of geese leaving the refuge headed on to some private farms just up the road.
I did hear some shooting from the guys that were hunting the fields on the refuge, i think they had pretty good succes.

Just took a drive around a couple of the local farms and there are a lot of geese hitting just about every corn field around.
Saw probably 1000 snow geese spread between 3 differnt fields each about 3 miles apart. Usually i dont see the snow geese show up until like the last 2 weeks of season so i am not sure what these guys are doin here… maybe they just changed there migration route or there are just to many of them so they had to go other places.
I think we are in for one heck of a year…..Makes it hard to get any work done.
Call em in and shoot em close.

A good number of geese have moved in to the area including some snow geese.
Had a good hunt on sat. Had a budy shoot his first goose. that is always fun.
On sunday was a different story. the wind blew pretty hard and the birds didnt want to work very well. pretty hard to decoy in.
I watched a field of live geese in the afternoon and saw flock after flock lock in then spin off and leave just like they had done over my decoys that morning.
So i figure if they dont want to go into live birds then it is pretty tough to get them to decoy.
I think that we have not seen the big push yet of migrators, and i think once they show up the hunting will be great.
Stay out there and shoot straight.

The past few days I’ve had noticeable increase in the birds working river. Some geese working the valley as well. As soon as I get my boat fixed I’ll hit the coast and give it a try. I need some rain to get the ponds filled up again, they raised during those storms in October but have gone down again with the better weather. Now that deer season is finished I can put those dogs work…

Just a quick update. i just took a drive around our farm and did some glassing on the river and have seen more geese in the last 20 min. than i have seen all season so far.
Lots of big flocks of geese looking for a field.
Also 1 big flock of snow geese sitting on the river. guessing a couple thousand birds.
I am thinking this is the head of the migration. hopefully they will stick around for this weekend.

This weekend was pretty slow.
Not a whole lot of geese working the area and the geese that i did see comeing off of the river all went directly north into washington. I am thinking new birds should be ariving any day now.
This moring on the way to work i actually saw more birds flying over our farm then i had seen in a week. maybe it is a good sign.
I guess we will see what happens this weekend.

The geese have been up and down the valley this week as well. As soon as I wrap up deer season, I can hit the ponds and chase some birds. Hows it going for everyone else…

Hope everyone has gotten off to a good start.
I havent been able to go out much the last 2 weeks we have had deer tags but those are all filled now time to get back to what really matters.
Looks to me like most of the local Geese have moved out and now just waiting for the weather to push down the migrators.
Looks like there are a few ducks sticking around McCormick slough but i am not really sure how they are doing down there.
Last night did some glassing out across the river and did see a few flocks of geese and ducks rafting out in the middle.
Hopefully new birds will be showing up here shortly and we can really get things going.
good luck to everyone and shoot them with there legs down.

Hunted sunday for geese in a corn field . Lots of big cans and a few speks still around. Limmited by 8:15 with some really close shooting.
Seeing more and more birds every day. I would say that the head of the migration is really starting to show up. I think it will just keep getting better and better.
Not sure how they did not at McCormick this weekend i did hear a lot of shooting down there on saturday but i have not checkedd the numbers yet.

Hope everyone had a good opener.
We hunted McCormick slough on sat with a number 1 pick and shot 17 ducks for 3 of us. Mostly Green wing teal but a few widgeon and 3 pintail. Would have been nice to have had some cloud cover but it was still a good day.
Sunday i took my wife out goose hunting in a corn field on our farm and we shot 7 big cans and 3 specks. I love early season geese they just put the legs down and fall in without thinking.
I wish they were this easy all season.
Well i hope everyone had as good of a time as we did.

Well i tried to hunt some local geese on the 9th. got set up before daylight and heard the geese talking on the river. saw a total of 20 geese. 18 of them landed out in the field not even paying attention to me then 2 set down 20 yards out side the decoys.
That is what not scouting the evening before will get you. i drove back from portland and relied on family to do the scouting for me.
Well we will get on them come october.

I bow hunt also , for elk i like to hunt the trask unit for the size of the bulls but saddle mt has the most but has a lot of timber company and gets closed down due to fire danger . As far as deer I like to hunt around the upper clackamas river in the late season ( huge bucks )
As far as waterfowl I hunt public land like sauvies island and he columbia river . The only problem with sauvie is sky busters and crowds . I try to stay with the columbia the most. Good luck

Note from ODFW 07-17-2007 09:23
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
It is apparent from waterfowl counts that a 107 day liberal duck season will be offered again this year. Goose numbers have maintained themselves also.

So in essence I will be proposing basically no changes from duck and goose seasons from last year. The new goose seasons in Klamath and the south coast area would be maintained but we are pursuing a new hunt in Tillamook County. So really a whole lot of STATUS QUO with date adjustments.

Based on this please provide me by July 26 with any comments you may have on retaining the status quo on most hunting seasons and in particular if you have different recommendations for a particular hunt.

Thanks much.

I had a good last 4 days with some good friends and great times out goose hunting.
We killed a lot of birds this year and missed just as many but all in all one of my best seasons so far with just under 100 geese killed personally and close to 300 as a group.
Hopefully everyone will stay in touch through the offseason and we can all hit it again next september. Every one have a good summer get out there and catch some fish or do some predator controll.
Good luck.

Cloudy, Occassional Rain Showers – 35-40 Degrees
sprigkiller55, you were correct…I do have a residance in oregon also…but have been in contact with two persons in the Denver area….for the past five seasons I have noticed that the birds here in the klamath basin have really changed their patterns…not many stay here more than one week….geese move north into grants pass area after early season….(honkers) and the snows usually overfly tule and go straight into the butte sink area; due to the different crops being planted at tule (my opinion)….klamath used to be a final destination locatioin for over 1 to 1 1/2 million waterfowl at peak times; but there’s nowhere near this number anymore….the snake river, and Idaho has also stort stopped many of the honkers; with a further splitting of the honkers then going south to winter in surprise valley of california…the northern portion of klamath lake, and other areas could be remanaged and “opened to hunters” and perhaps the watefowl population would support waterfowl hunting in numbers that used to come into klamath falls since ww2 time period…what’s you opinion????you have a similar problem that is in your california area too; with the real estate market being too expensive to support duck clubs in many areas…the north end of the salton sea used to support eleven duck and goose clubs; but only three remain; with actual cheap $400,000 to $600,000 homes being erected where “duck shacks” stood three years ago…klamath still has waterfowl at various times; but with guides purchasing blocks of land for their use; it may come to the day that the average hunter here would need to have a guide, to access the good property????…denver has and is experiencing a huge build up of honkers and projections are that it will continue to get more each season….but…a quality boat hunt definitely may be the way to go to hunt the klamath area; along with many quality water decoys….

Huntedd for geese this weekend. Saw lots of geese but most were up high and headed south. We did manage to get a few on both sat and sunday but these were the birds that were flying low and they were still a little wary of just dropping into the decoys. you can tell these birds have been to the dance before.
Not sure how the ducks were this weekend i tried to stay home when i wasnt hunting. i am pretty sure that McCormick is still froze up but with the temp. rising it should be thawed out in a couple days, or at least the river blinds should be.
Good luck to everyone.

Slow morning , not that many birds moving around . The one that were moving would come to the call and decoys but would not come in unless they were low to the deck . I thought it was just late season birds but after picking up to head home I saw just down river from me was a huge road work sign which had floated down river during the high water . I was not to happy but still took home three birds .

sprigkiller55, I don’t know yet if I’m going to do the extra hunt this season…..I have two gentlemen that I want to talk to about hunting also in colorado next season….they’re population of honkers has increased the past nine years and the season keeps getting longer and longer…..from the financial stand-point; it may be less expensive to go to there to goose hunt , on their facilities, every other weekend or so….rather than secure something up here in southern oregon, northern california….the geese in the klamath area , migrate out at the early season to the grants pass area..and they aren’t hunted at all year after that…..one of the “clubs” that one of the gentlemen has developed winters over 80,000 honkers within four miles of his properties….and 200,000 honkers within 12 miles of the property….the miller unit , by indian tom lake gets geese later in the season, especially right after a strong rain storm…cover is really bad to secure and it’s a 3 day a year shoot only anyway……geese in colorado have really been rising in numbers each year…short-stopped from northern texas now too…..too much feed and water and very limited number of hunters, when compared with oregon or california’s hunter’s numbers….have you ever shot there????…..

McCormick slough is all froze up. Some of the river blinds are open but they have a little ice on the edge. The main river blind #12 wich is the best to hunt, i have not gone and looked at but most of the time when it is this cold for this long it usually frezzes up solid about 40 to 50 yards out. If you have a good number to pick, the fields can bee good when it is this cold. the ducks seem to hit them hard in the morning and the evening, and there has been a good number of geese on those fields. Let me know if you need any more info i live 5 mins. from McCormick and our family is the ones that farm those fields along with the farm to the south of the refuge.
I can always run down there and take a look for you.

We hunted for the fields for geese on fri-sun. with very good luck. I noticed that the geese we are seeing have already been shot at, lots of cripples flying around. you can tell season is almost over. they are a little leary of the docoys.
I found that using just really good looking full bodies along with a little movement in the spread will bring them in close. Temps seem to be warming up a little this morning. We will just have to wait and see what happens in the last 2 weeks.

SSM–It’s been a total hit or miss at Indian Tom!! We don’t hunt it alot–but when we do we will boat across the lake to the inlet by the ridge that runs out there!! Just east of there is called the Miller unit or something like that–we’ve driven in there but never hunted it–mainly because we don’t see much water there!! A game warden told us that it gets hunted some!! When we were there two weeks ago–most of Indian Tom was froze and we saw about a dozen honkers sitting out in the middle!! So they knew they were safe–ha-ha!! So are you going to be able to hunt the after season speck hunt?? Not asking for a place–just curious if you are fortunate to have a place to hunt since it is on private property I believe!!
later–Tom

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
springkiller55, thanks for the comeback….when you hunted at Indian Tom Lake, did you: actually see very many fligts working the lake? and did you do very well on any birds?…..in a heavy wind storm this lake seems to “short stop” a lot of birds from going over to meiss lake; but I don’t know if there’s any birds that ever come from the south to this lake?….I was told that in the 40’s it was the western boundry lake for a club that the refuge has purchased and made part of the refuge???….also, the flat area north of stateline (actual water holding resevoir) was , and may still be a partial club; but was supposedly a great hunting locatio for honkers until someone “complained???” that the area couldn’t be legally flooded???….have you ever known anyonewho’s hunted this area either????….the canal that runs north and south, on the western boundary of the oregon side of the refuge bears hunting sometimes as the widgeon and mallards use this as a highway as they come from the marsh, about 5 miles north of this area….

COLD , Very COlD one of the coldest mornings all season. 5 degrees. Geese were a lttle slow getting off of the river this morning but worked the decoy alrght. some of the birds are starting to get a little weary of the decoys. Saw 4 geese flying today with legs hanging. They have been shot at before and think twice about just dropping in..
Saw lots of big geese around. not so many of the little geese that i had been seeing for the last couple weeks.
Cold weather stays up north should make for a good couple of last weeks.
Shoot straght. Good luck

Anyone know who the guys are hunting in this area, south of Stateline road (near the dairy cattle place)? They got a bunch of Eliminators and even a Mutt Hutt. Seem to be doing pretty well hunting a piece of flooded pasture. But its got to be tough to hide in, since there isn’t a stitch of cover around.

Salton Sea Man–When we hunt Indian Tom it’s usually by boat and we just launch right off the road!! We have parked in the back and walk out on that small ridge–but I’m not sure if we are legal or not!! And we didn’t know about the trout–that’s interesting!! We hunted a week ago Sat at Tule/LK!! Three of us got a limit of honkers in the PM on the all day hunt at Tule in the league of nations on Sat!! I filmed the honkers at Tule going from sump 1b to the closed area to feed then back to 1b–so we were pretty much hosed on them!!Then got nothing there or at Lower Klamath Sun-Mon-or Tues so we left and went down to our club by Merced and actually got some Specks/Aluetians and two snows–but the duck population is next to nothing!! So are you going to be able to do the special Speck hunt at the end of Feb?? Hey thanks for the comeback!!
Later–Tom

sprigkiller55, have you hunted Indian tom lake successfully?…where did you park; besides the northwest parking lot; is there another place to park?….as it gets later in the season, the honkers will stay right on the border, ne of the lake and then fly directly over the lake in small bunches on there way to Meiss lake refuge…also, if you know of the lake….did you know that it’s teaming with cutthroat trout?…the california state record for cuttrhoat trout is from this lake and f and g plants it four time a year…..any comments?….the mouth of the williamson has been “up and down” the past week and some days not even a bird is seen and on two days the river was a goose highway as they flew down the river and directly accross the lake to the wompler ranch property…anyone shooting the wood river refuge own springs pockets?….

Not as many birds in the area but we did get lucky and have a field with a couple thousand birds that had been sitting there for 4 days and got 4 limits this morning and the birds were back in there this afternoon so i guess we will try it again in the moring.
Good luck

Temps have started to warm up. 50 degrees yesterday. not as many geese around sems like they have moved on with the weather. hopefully we can get some more cold weather and get some birds back into the area.
All the ponds and sloughs have thawed out wich should make for some decent duck hunting over the weekend.
Good luck to everyone.

Very cold on the lake yesterday. Good bird numbers, and plenty of action. There was a bunch of hunters at the lake today, they were setup all over the place. Seemed like folks were doing pretty well. My day didn’t go so well, we cut it short because I spun the shaft on my pump and limped back to the dock before the wind came up. I also got a leak in my wader boot so one leg filled up, not very comfortable. Oh well, I got a few birds…

Mohawk River 12-27-2006 15:47
Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
Ducks were flying pretty high this morning over the Mohawk but I managed to turn these two honkers around bring them in close. What a rush. The water levels are pretty high and there are potholes everywhere for the ducks to hide in. Seen some good flocks of Widgeon coming through and quite a few Mallards hanging out in the valley.

It has been a great 2 weeks for goose hunters. There are a lot of geese in the area. lots of small geese traveling together in big flocks at about 8 in the morning then the big geese start getting up at about 930 and moving around. so if you can hold out on shooting the small birds and give it time you can scrap out a few pigs.
Weve shot limits of geese the last 6 times we have gone out. hopefully the birds stay here and this keeps up through the rest of the season.
Temps have warmed up and it has been raining pretty much for 3 days straight. So there is little potholes popping up all over for the ducks to be using. seems like the ducks are pretty spread out.
Find a spot they are using and put in the time.
Good luck everyone.

I had an absolutely great hunt yesterday for Geese up on Multnomah channel yesterday. We shot a couple of limits of geese out of a dairy field. There were thousands of them trying to get into our field and we called flocks in for hours. Great shooting, great birds and pretty good dog work as well. Man, what a trip. That is hunting at its finest..

Hey Kat-17–thanks for the info!! We are not taking our boat for that very reason–so we figured it would be a goose hunt only ( which is a good thing)!! Thanks again
Tom
Hey that picture of you beside your boat looks like it was taken at Indian Tom Lake!!

sprigkiller55, I talked to a few friends a couple days ago and said the ponds were frozen up again. The reports show that most of the activity are in the fields.

Hunted a garlic circle that had some cover crop wheat in it for geese this morning. limited out by about 8:30 all on little geese and one speck.
Lots and lots of geese in the area. big groups of little geese that get off the river and headd for the field. luckily this morning we had the right field.
I went down to McCormick slough this morning and there was probably 5,ooo geese in one of the grass circle there.
Should be good for this weekend.
Good luck

Huntedd for geese on thursaday and just got seriously rained on. Had lots of little geese working the field but they kept hanging just outside the decoys.
Sat and sun were very good days. Lots of geese in the air and they loved to work the decoys. Shot a lot of very big birds. Great weekend.,
I am seeing lots and lots of geese around here, you just have to be able to get permission on the fields they are going to. the problem is that everyone else knows where they are going so there is a lot of competion to get good fields down here. Luckily i have some of my own land that i keep aside just for the family.

A buddy of mine hunting McCormick slough this weekend and had pretty good success. the slough semi thawed out and people got some pretty good shooting in.
Looks like it is going to stay under freezing around here so if you have a patch of open water keep it open and the ducks will find it.
Good luck .

Siltcoos Lake 12-16-2006 19:54
Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 35-40 Degrees
Hunted Siltcoos today with little success. There were a lot of hunters on the lake today. A lot of shooting but the birds were avoiding decoys and we mostly had pass shooting opportunities. There were 3 groups of us in the booth island triangle at the south of the island and everyone was pass shooting. The birds seemed nervous, flew very high. We did get one Canvasback, our first for the year at Siltcoos, a very beautiful bird. Couple of bluebills and buffleheads. Thinking of having it mounted. Lake started getting rough about 1 so we packed it in.

Temps have warmed up and ponds have started thawing out. Starting to see ducks hit little ponds they havent been able to go to in weeks. should make the birds spread out more.
Supposed to get cold this weekend so hopefully the geese will be hungry and head to the fields hard.
Good luck this weekend

Siltcoos Lake 12-09-2006 21:13
Cloudy, Winds Calm – 45-50 Degrees
I hunted Siltcoos twice this week. Wednesday was a bright sunny, blue sky day. No wind and little bird movement. New birds were on the lake, few thousand I would say but we had the lake to ourselves and they rafted up on us in the middle. We squeaked out a 7 bird limit and headed to lunch. Saturday it was rainy and started out somewhat windy but that died down. With more hunters on the lake and the occasional boat running around we had slow but consistent bird action. My rig must not have been right today because the birds weren’t coming in to land. We had some good pass shooting. About half way through the morning my buddy pulled up on a Canvasback, our only one of the day, and on his second shot his Remington literally broke in two. He’s using a Remington 1100 autoloader and the stock came apart from the action and pieces went everywhere. Never scene anything like it. Guess my insistence on using an O/U prevails again. What a classic look of shock on his fact though when that thing came apart. Guess he’s lucky he didn’t cycle that third shell and pull the trigger when it happened. Been a little slow on the home front for ducks, but I did knock down a nice honker Thursday in the back pasture. Haven’t had that flock of Geese come back around yet. Looks like I have goose for dinner tomorrow. Get out there and have fun…

I have been seeing a lot of geese in the area. They are starting to use just about any field. i have seen them in alfalfa, Winter wheat, Corn, And on of our Garlic circles that has a little wheat as cover.

I talked to a fellow goose hunter that said he was in othello today and everything up there is all froze up and he didnt see many birds. So they must have moved down here and now the wheather is going to be nice the next couple of days and this will let them just hang out here and feed.
Should be a good weekend , good luck.

Mohawk / Siltcoos Lake 12-04-2006 23:13
Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 35-40 Degrees
So the cold must have pushed the birds south of Siltcoos this weekend. There were hardly any birds on the lake and although we had some oppertunities for a few birds, it was pretty slow. Here’s to hoping that a new bunch come in. This morning I had a bunch of big geese on the river, most of the standing water was frozen this morning. Here’s to hoping their back in the morning.

Cold and foggy this morning but some nice groups of birds flying. Guess I slept through the first bunch cuz they were in and out in a flash and I didn’t even get the gun up. Managed to get my act together and bring down a couple of mallards an hour later. Geese stayed to high today and turned me into a bird watcher.

This morning found a corn field loaded with mallards. shot a few nice greenheads, really fat healthy looking migrators. There are a lot of new birds that have moved in the last couple of days. this cold weather has really started pushing them around and making them hungry. It should just keep getting better from here on out as long as we keep getting the cold weather that is forcasted. Good Luck
