Good morning for duck hunting. Ducks decoy perfect this morning hunt. Its turning out to be a good season so far, shot a mallard Drake with a leg band. Two for the season. Geese were all over the fly zone. They would not decoy, no matter how hard we call. Had approx- 125 ducks come in at one time.

Snow geese flying over at 06:00 today. Couldn’t count them, but they made a lot of noise. Sounded like a fair amount of birds.

Took one of my daughters out for the opener. It was her birthday and could not have worked out better. Ended up with five nice canadas. We shot six but one recovered and flew away before my daughter could finish it off. Did not see any ducks at all but there is a fair amount of geese in the area. Did not hear or see anyone else gunnin’ in the area. A couple of friends tried Blue Marsh Lake with no luck at all. “G”

Cloudy, Snow & Rain Mix – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
After the initial morning flurry, duck and goose activity was light. Hunting pressure however, was heavy with a few sky-busters. Woodies, Green-Wings, and Mallard continue to be the main bag with a few Ring-Necked Ducks showing up also.

Duck population as well as activity is good and improving. Local Woodies and Green-Wings are still in the area. Flight ducks are adding to the bulk of the local population and should provide some decent pre-freeze shooting.

Somerset Lake 10-24-2011 08:19
Cloudy, High Winds – 40-45 Degrees
White caps all over the lake last week. The weather wouldn’t cooperate at all with wind and rain most of the week. Small groups of mallards here and there, but nothing solid yet.

The smaller creeks and stream were holding nice groups of Woodies with little hunting pressure (Stonycreek, Beaver Creek).

Very little hunting pressure noted on the lake or on surrounding streams/creeks.

Geneva Swamp, Pymatuning 10-21-2011 18:34

Geneva: Duck are present in good numbers and are showing signs of the first migrants arriving. Goose activity light.

Pymatuning: Initial flights of mallards showing up in the compound and lake. While birds were plentyful, I saw none outside of the propagation area. Geese are arriving in decent numbers and have increased the numbers present last week. The blinds should be in for a little shooting tomorrow.

Hartstown Swamp, Geneva Swamp, Lake Wilhelm 10-19-2011 15:22
Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 50-60 Degrees
Hartstown: Duck presence- light but improving, activity light, same for geese.

Geneva: Duck presence: Propagation area holding small flocks of puddlers. May be the first northerners. Geese presence and activity-light.

Lake Wilhelm: Duck presence: observed several resting flocks of Mergansers. Geese: light presence and activity.
Spotted my first flocks of Tundra Swans heading south. Three flocks consisting of a total of about 300 birds.

Summary: At all three locations local birds are making themselves scarce after the first few weeks of the season while also exhibiting signals of northern birds beginning to show up. Just my take.

Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 50-60 Degrees
Took time to scout today. Action at Hartstown was very slow. Though geese were visible in the Management Area at Pymatuning, numbers were low. The Linesville Spillway was holding a good amount of Mallards and goose activity light. This was the heaviest hunted spot I observed for the day with about 10 trucks in the parking lot. Note that the lake is very high and the westerly wind was kicking white caps up on the open lake. Chop was about 1.5 feet at about one second intervals and in my view could be hazardous to flat-bottom craft. Geneva swamp was the most active spot I checked today an observed multiple hunters with Blue and Green-Winged Teal in their bags.

Cloudy, Occassional Rain Showers – 45-50 Degrees
Looks like mid 40’s, rain and gusty for the early duck opener here. Good luck to those braving the elements.

Small groups have been sighted throughout central Somerset County locally, but nothing to get really excited about yet. Rivers and streams are way up…..use caution if you’re settling in somewhere along a stream bank for woodies……I would expect some serious mud and high water. Don’t get sucked in a mudhole and use some common sense about taking shots if you can’t make the retrieve.

I’m gonna play it safe and toss a light spread out on the open water and see what happens after daylight.

Did a short morning hunt at Hartstown on a beautiful “duck” day. Most of the morning’s action was from local “Hoodies & Woodies.” While I was impressed with the local bird numbers, they’re already graduates of “Shotgun 101”
I’d rate today’s hunt a solid 8.5 of 10.

Not much info. to share about the early season. Guys I’ve talked to are saying to avoid Lake Stoneycreek…..too many hunters and pressure.

Somerset Lake is drained. Not sure about Indian or Lake Stonycreek, but would imagine the same.

Saw lots of ducks on Quemahoning Dam.

Put in two decent early goose hunts and that was about it. Focused on some archery this year.

I’ll try to update with some late season info.

Lots of resident birds around but it has’nt taken long for them to figure out the game. Probably 500- 1000 birds hanging in the management area and the unhuntable sgl 214. Heard zero shooting from PA while on the OH side hunting teal Sat. am. Birds are working some fields in the area but its a lot of trouble for a 1 bird limit! Someday the PGC will figure out these are’nt SJB geese at this time of year and get a realistic limit for the local pop. at Pymie.

Shuttin’ ‘er down for the season. This will be the last post from the SW PA region.

Ducks were a joke this year…..not sure where they all got to. Early season geese was awesome and the regular season was decent. I have one or two more hunts left in me befoe the fat lady sings though. First born came on 12/26 and takes most of of my/our free time. I hope to prepare some decent waterfowl dishes for maple sugar season and get things lined up for next year. This year just kind of slipped by with a new house and baby. Better luck nect year, right?

Hunted the lake Saturday morning for the last time this season. Other than mergansers we saw very few ducks and had no shooting. All in all the Pa. season was not very good for me.Just too warm. My jaunts down to Chincoteague have been very productive and I am finding I prefer to make the 3 1/2 hour drive to gun down there.
The season always ends much too soon. I would love to see the powers that be delay our regular opener 2 weeks and run it 2 weeks later but I guess that is wishful thinking.
Anyone have any snow goose reports from Middle Creek? “g”

Cloudy, Winds Calm – 45-50 Degrees
Hunted the rivers the last 2 weekends, in 2 different spots. Last weekend was a bust on the ducks, but we did manage a deer with the flintlock off one of the islands. Yesterday we hunted the evening and ended up with 5 geese and a nice greenhead. Tons of birds but those big flocks can be a real handful to call and decoy. This weather should finish us for ducks this year but the RP goose season should still be strong. Good Luck!

I agree with Vogel…..looks like near 60 degrees a few days next week. Snowmobile one day, outdoor yard work the next. So much for hunting season.

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
I’d have to agree with Duckman-Dew. It’s looking worse and worse everyday. The weather isn’t helping produce anything either. I hunted a wetland area the other day and managed to score a few greenheads, that’s about it.

Lake Arthur, PA 12-25-2007 21:47
Cloudy, High Winds – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
It’s just what I was afraid of, no ducks! Hunted Lake Arthur Christmas eve morning on the backside of a front with a 20 degree temperature drop, snow flurries, overcast, low pressure system, and no ducks. I’m afraid they’ve headed South. We hunted from daylight to 11:00 am, and only saw two ducks, an hour apart. I thought that with the 25 m.p.h. winds, they might be sitting down somewhere, so I ran around the lake trying to see if I could find any sheltered back in a cove or something, and only ran up four more. I hunted late this morning and only saw three. I think we are probably done until next fall.

Do the world a favor, teach a kid to hunt.

Lake Arthur, PA 12-20-2007 22:12
Cloudy, High Winds – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
We hunted the Muddy Creek area of Lake Arthur this past Saturday morning, having to leave about 9am because of family obligations. Hunting out of a boat blind and only putting out a dozen decoys, we saw a few ducks, mostly teal and divers. The lake was frozen over last week, but melted because of a couple of days of 50+ temperatures. We did manage to bag a Gray duck (Gadwall), and a Ring Necked duck. both were shot coming into the decoys. There doesn’t appear to be too many ducks left up here because of the freezing weather we’ve had. I was also shocked to notice most of the big ducks seem to have already moved out. The lake is frozen over again, but it should thaw as a result of the warmer temperatures this week. We do have a small front moving into the area on Sunday night, so I’ll give ’em another try on Christmas eve and day. I’ll keep you posted as to the conditions and the results.

Hey Larry,
Read your report and I live about 5 mins away from every boat launch at the marsh.AM always looking for a die- hard waterfowler since there aren’t many in this area.I will be on the state hill launch about 4:45 am sat morning.I’m hunting on a shore using a lay-down blind. Get back to me if you want to hook up.

Blue Marsh 12-19-2007 07:08
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
Gunned the marsh yesterday. No luck where we set up but we did some scouting for about two hours and did see quite the variety of birds. About 500 canadas must have roosted on the lake and there were about a hundred black ducks with them.Saw mallards, bluebills, goldeneye, assorted mergansers and dippers.Still learning alot about gunning divers. No other hunters on the lake at all.If anyone is ever interested in hooking up shoot me a PM.Looks like all the old gang here is prety much gone. There was some skim ice on parts of the lake so if you do get out be careful.Lost too many friends over the years during the season!! Hunt safe, “G”

Cloudy, High Winds – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
Hunted the open water until 1pm yesterday. Four geese, 3 hooded mergs, and a buffle. Not too bad, good action most of the time. Some golden-eyes around,as well as ringers, and of course thousands of geese. Nice front on Saturday, just not coming from a good direction to move alot of birds our way. Good Luck.
