Hunted Southern Iowa yesterday and now snow on ground there. Saw several big flocks of mallards. From about Hwy 34 South in Iowa it is snow free in the fields unless today’s snow is cover some of it up. It will take a several inches on ground and cold temps (which are here this week) before they will leave there!

Found duck count on KC star outdoor page.Date was 12-27.Over 400,000 ducks, mostly mallards were on the conservation areas in the state, counted some seven areas. You should be seeing mallard soon, having snow as of now here in Missouri, expecting 1=3 inches by tonight.Hope this gets the birds moving south, although this snow is coming in from the south.

John: If you look at Outdoors on KCS, and look at ‘hunting reports’ from last Thursday’s article, you will see amount of ducks different areas are holding.

There was a large snow storm in se mo. over christmas, this may have moved ducks back to the north.Central part of Mo. right now is really not too back for snow cover.North mo. along mo. iowa line has snow cover.checked the post on kcstar.com,did not see anything about ducks in the outdoors reort, did show large number of geese in area.

John D.

Very confused. Thought will all the snow cover Mallards would have been all over us here in Ark. We have tons of Pintails and Gadwalls but not many Mallards.

Any idea where they’re at?

Cloudy, High Winds – –
Today was my last day for this season on ducks. The weather people sure missed this call.Had 3 inches at our place instead of a inch or less, winds at 25MPH gusting to 40-50MPH.Ended up with 3 inches of snow.a constant wind of 40-50 mph, snow came down side ways, temps dropped from shooting time to 20 degrees when we pulled out.Had heater on in blind, ended up with 3 mallards and a bluebill.Holly,my lab made three retrieves in the water, after 3rd,even with her vest on and being in the blind by the heat, she still was shaking from the cold, she already has a arthritis problem in one hip,so she and I left.Drive home to Columbia is a normal 1 hour plus drive. Today, almost 3 hours due to blowing snow, icy hiway 24 and hiway 63, many cars in the ditch on 63,a tractor-trailer overturned. In my 60 years of hunting of ducks, this was the worst weather I have ever hunted in,shot up almost a box of shells for one drake, impossible to know what kind of lead to put on the birds due to the high winds.Holly, did not eat when I got home, she is still sleeping on her bed. This was the end of 2012,hope God gives me another year in 2013.To all members and their families Merry Christmas and have a safe holiday.Plan to go back in January for the snows..
