Joe – I am jealous. I was stuck at work today. I could see the people coming in covered with rain and complaining about the wind and I knew that the birds would be flying. I have not had any problems with the lower case letters. I have not been out since the opener, but I am hoping to slip out soon. It is good to hear that I am not the only one that seems to have less than spectacular openers. I am a big fan of moving the youth hunt to 2 weeks before the regular season. I am not very familiar with Farmington bay. I have been there a few times. Where do you hunt out there?

Take care and keep your face down,Braden

Fmngtn Bay 10-16-2006 19:18
Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 45-50 Degrees
Got to play out in the rain and wind and mud this a.m. Got 2 mallards early on, then not much going on, so chased snipe around for a while.. Almost decided to leave when the winds started, and then the birds flew pretty good. Ended up with six nice birds and a snipe. My dog, Maxie, thoroughly enjoyed the retrieves, and there were 2 that I wouldn’t have found that she did..Hard morning with the rain and hail and winds, but worth the effort….CUL -JOE

Hey BRADEN — MAYBE IT’S JUST YOU AND ME…YOUTH HUNT WAS GREAT, TONS OF BIRDS FOR THE KIDS TO TRY TO SHOOT..THEN REG. OPENER, SAME SPOT, NOT MUCH GOING ON.. LAST YEAR IT WAS SUPER IN THE SAME AREA..GO FIGURE..I STILL THINK WE NEED 2 WEEKS BETWEEN YOUTH HUNT AND REG OPENER…PICKED UP A NICE PINTAIL AND SNIPE AT KAYSVILLE THIS AFTERNOON, MY DOG ENJOYED BOTH RETRIEVES, HER FIRST WATERFOWL OF THE SEASON..I’M WRITING IN UPPER CASE BECAUSE THIS SITE SEEMS TO HAVE SOME PROBLEM WITH SLURRED LETTERS IN LOWER CASE… ARE YOU SEEING THAT TOO? This is lower case again..Anyhow, I’ll keep posting, and I hope you do too. WE NEED TO TRY GETTING TOGETHER THIS SEASON.. CUL — JOE

Willard Spur 10-09-2006 16:58
Cloudy, Rain & Thunderstorms – 40-45 Degrees
We split into 2 groups and hunted about 10 miles out on the opening day. The group I was in had problems because the wind kept blowing the water away and we would have to pick up and move the decoys. We finally ended up over in the dog ears of the Bear River Refuge. The birds were flying, but something was wrong with our spread. Finally we moved like 100 yards away from our decoys and were able to pick up a few birds pass shooting. Very strange opener. The other group shot about 18 ducks between the 3 of them. They shot a nice mixed bag of Mallards, Wigeon, Teal, Spoonies, Redheads, and Pintails. We headed in about 2pm. I am excited to get back out and see if the birds have calmed down so that we can start to pattern them.

Take care and keep your face down,Braden

We went out for a preseason ride in the airboat on the Willard spur. The water levels look great. I saw more birds than in years past. We were out last Saturday observing the youth hunt. Unfortunately we couldn’t round any one up to take and be the gunner. I have a daughter that I am working on for next year. I really feel like the conditions are better this year than they have been in the past years. The problem is I have a bad habit of starting to lie to myself about this time every year. Only Saturday will tell. Stay tuned for updates.

Stay safe and keep your face down

Tana — My ‘puter has been goofy, thought I replied to your last already, but here again — I talked to Rich Hansen on 9-11-06 at the Farminton Bay youth day clinic.. He’s the manager out there (801-451-7386)and said that all previously huntable areas East of the Fmgtn Bay boundary dike (West of our Centerville area) are now closed to hunting and shooting, except the west half of the big pond that sits just North of the dump…and there’s not much reason to hunt the west half of that pond, IMO…So we are basically screwed from here on out in that area, thanks especially to local politicians from places like North Salt Lake, West Bountiful, Bountiful, Centerville, and Farmington…they felt we just couldn’t live without another highway in our lives..And I was out there just a week ago training with my dog (don’t know how long before I can’t do that either) and YUP – the marshes just North of the big pond were full of mallards…. Thanks for the reply. I know that area really well. I have hunted there my whole life. Grew up in that area. I know that lake you are talking about really well and if they close some of that area I might be in some real trouble this year…..Well I guess we will have to take our chances or just play it by ear….If you hear anything let us know…Thanks

Tana — I discussed this area with DWR C.O. Keith Fullencamp and he said no more hunting or target shooting this whole area West of that gravel frontage road (they call it the sheep road) You know this area? Anyhow, apparently the East entrance to Fmgtn Bay will still be open for now, as will the South entrance..but once they start digging and dynamiting things will be different….he said the boundary will cut that big pond (just North of the dump) right thru the middle, and the line will meet up with the Fmngtn Bay boundary dike somewhere North of that pond… So I asked if we could hunt part of that area, and he said he didn’t think there would be a problem, since the exact border line is in question…So I guess we’re on our own as to try hunting there or not..I know Im not going to be there this year for the opener, as I don’t want to take the chance. If you hear anything more, let us all know…. I guess you know I hate the Legacy Highway project…Good luck –Joe
