WOW — WHERE DID THE YEAR GO???? ANOTHER DUCK HUNTING SEASON JUST ABOUT GONE..I HAD A REALLY GOOD EARLY PART AND MIDDLE PART OF THE SEASON, BUT IT’S BEEN SLOW FOR ME THE PAST TWO OR THREE WEEKS, AND I’VE HAD TO WORK MY BUTT OFF FOR JUST 2 OR 3 SHOTS ON AN OUTING…TRIED JUMPING A CREEK THIS A.M. WITH RESULTS BEING 1 DISTANT SHOT AT A FLEEING MALLARD, AND NO APPARENT DAMAGE… THEN ALL AFTERNOON LAYED OUT FOR GEESE WHERE I’D SCOUTED HUNDREDS A FEW DAYS EARLIER, AND NOTHING CAME ANYWHERE NEAR TODAY…BUT I DID GET STARTED ON A NEW LOUIS L’AMORE BOOK, AND THE SUN FELT GOOD, AND I GOT MY EXERCISE AGAIN…THAT’S HUNTING…TOO BAD NOBODY IS READING ANY OF THIS ANYMORE….USED TO BE A GOOD SITE…IF ANYBODY IS ON THIS PAGE, GOOD LUCK DURING THE “OFF SEASON” AND MAYBE I’LL “CUL” JOE..

With all this freezing going on, many of our marshes are getting pretty tight on top, and it’s tough crunching through that ice…However, if you can find a nice opening or bust out some of thaT ICE for some dekes, there are still birds around that will rspond to a nice set and good calling….got a nice mixed-bag limit just yesterday…some very good days ahead yet… good luck and be careful!! — JOE

Hope you all got the “Opener” done right..friend and I each got a nice mixed bag limit that day, and of course it’s been somewhat slow the past few times out…I’m not seeing a lot of teal, mostly gadwall, pintail, and more widgeon than usual…Hunted at ogden Bay last Friday A.M. and we were in the right general area, but just not the right ‘spot’, but always fun to get out with good friends….good luck out there.. Hey — Anybody home??? Dove hunts are done, and that went pretty good, once I learned to stay local instead of wasting my time way down South like I have in years past…Anyhow, blew a little dust out of my 20 ga, and my dog Maxie, enjoyed her first feathered retrieves in a while.. Farmington Bay looks good for the Youth Hunt this Sat…lots of birds around where I was scouting on the dikes…Hope you have your spots picked out and enjoy a morning helping to train our youth…Good luck..JOE

Hey guys — finally got to check out the dikes at Fmgtn Bay today, biking for a couple hours… My usual ‘youth day’ and ‘general opener’ spot is completely dry, and lots of other places are also..I was mainly looking at areas around South entrance toward the East entrance dikes…did see a lot of birds moving, good mallard, pintail, and blue wing teal numbers over the bigger bodies of water…none of the secondary dikes I biked were mowed down, so biking (even hiking) is/will be difficult come hunt time…maybe that’s a good thing…past years these dikes were mowed in the Summer..maybe not this year…I want to check some of those areas (South) of the South entrance yet, sso I have a few more bike rides to do..CUL — JOE

Hey guys — hope someone is out there…August is right around the corner, meaning we can start roaming some of the dikes that we may have hunted in the past, and Sept. means we can brush up our shooting by chasing the tweety birds – the doves. They are challenging, and it’s just plain fun to get out early, after all this time not shooting at real birds — and they are mighty tasty – try it…don’t forget your license and HIP number..and plenty of liquids for re-hydration…Good luck on your scouting, and hope you’re finding some water where you have hunted before….Otherwise we may all be crowding each other on the same dike where some water will be controlled, all shooting at the same big-lipped shovellor that we can’t eat anyhow because of too much Mercury…anyhow, pray and dance for some serious rains!!
