Spring snow goose hunting under the Conservation Order in the U.S. passed at a fevered pace this year as the last few flights of light geese moved into Canada from North Dakota in mid-April. As we turn our sights to nesting conditions on the Prairie Pothole Region, we remind our readers that early Teal and Goose seasons are merely 4 months away and the count down to the season is already ticking.
Hello folks, and, as always, welcome to Waterfowler.com.
As the planes take flight this month to begin the May waterfowl breeding ground surveys, the results are expected to be very similar to last year’s report. A quick study of the North American Drought Monitor Map (link below) reveals a variety of problem areas in Canada again this year and highlights the great potential on the U.S. breeding grounds.
In summary, severe drought conditions continue in central Alberta. Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba remain abnormally dry. Water levels in southern Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region remain good to excellent again this year and the potential for above average production in the U.S. continues.
Waterfowler.com encourages our members to follow the reports and flight logs of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey teams on Flyways.us again this year. Flyway.us provides a wealth of information on the habitat and breeding surveys each season and that data will determine the upcoming season lengths and bag limits for your area.
For many readers, off-season projects and planning are already under way. From habitat management to dog training, the off-season is filled with a long “to do” list. Of course, the duck season is always open at Waterfowler.com’s Virtual Online Lodge in Second Life and Thursday night is “Lodge Night” to meet and greet with fellow members. Details on accessing the Lodge are accessible on WFC’s homepage and we look forward to your visit.
Until our next report, fishing trips present a great way to scout new hunting spots for the coming season and introduce a child to the wonders of the great outdoors.
