May 6, 2003 – Migration Update

Rain across much of the breeding ground has put a smile on the collective face of concerned waterfowlers as we enter the crucial portion of the 2003 breeding season for ducks and geese; and one Waterfowler.com member is sure to be grinning from ear to ear.

Hello folks, and, as always, welcome to Waterfowler.com.

And now, on to the Snow Goose Migration Report.

Heavy rain and storms across much of the upper Midwest are making the last few days of the conservation season in the U.S. a messy affair. The good news is that there are still small pockets of light geese around for those still not ready to concede the end of the 2002-2003 waterfowl season. And even better yet, the birds that are still around are mostly juveniles and responding to decoys very well.

Central to Western portions of the northern reaches of North Dakota are the best bet stateside for light geese as the season draws to a close, but reports of small pockets of lingering geese have come in from as far south as Indiana. With just a few days left, it may well be worth a few miles of driving before waving the white flag on this year’s conservation season.

Waterfowler.com would like to extend our condolences to member Ed Schlief on the loss of his hunting companion, Forrest (pictured above). It is our hopes that the weight of his loss is balanced by the memories of the adventurous days they shared in the untamed fields and marshes of Alaska.
