Mobile Delta & Bay 01-09-2006 09:05

At this point, this will go down as the worst season myself and my partner have had since I moved here in 1987.
The hunting has gotten tough on the Delta & Bay. WIth the hurricane killing the grass beds on most of the upper bay & lower delta, the food supply is limited and the birds are concentrated in a few areas. They have been pressured so bad that it is almost impossible to get birds to come into a blind of any sort. Even the buffies are blind shy. If anyone is doing any good in the upper Delta, they sure are keeping quiet about it.
From what started out as such a promising season certainly has fizzled. The lack of grassbeds & the warm weather is pretty much killing this season. Unless we get some really cold weather soon(which is not likely based on the forecast), I think we can stick a fork in this one, it pretty well done.

1/4 Mississippi Hunted on a guided hunt really sucked hunted in a blind that was pounded the day before by 4 hunters there was 150-200 hulls on the floor had a Shoveler land passed on him and 2 teal buzzed really couldn’t get a shot on them that was IT…Saw lots of birds but stayed away from the blind..Went back to the Lodge packed my bags and left saved my money..I can hunt for $5.00 in Alabama and not kill birds..
1/7 Hunted on the Coosa saw little to no birds and stayed away from the spread..Had several flocks of Geese come over and some even put their feet down..Got a couple and that was it kept working the geese for fun..Goona hunt tomorrow and my honey hole if nothing I am done for the year unless a good push of birds come..I like shooting Geese but don’t want a freezer full of liver…

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – Over 70 Degrees
Scouted out a few holes for this weekend. Atleast I can say that I saw a GOOD number of wood ducks working up and down the river.
I only saw one big duck, but it was too far off to identify. I have heard a couple of the local farmers talking about some geese and mallards they have been seeing in there farm ponds the last couple of days. Maybe this cold front that is hopefully on its way will get them up and moving this weekend. Alot of the holes are quite deep due to the heavy rains we got this week so be carefull stepping out of the boat! Good hunting…

Here is a report on Chattanoogan.com re-printed by permission from Richard Simms.
North Alabama
2006
In general duck hunting has been slow. There are real good numbers of gadwalls on the TN River, but they’re not moving much due to mild weather. A few folks who find a good spot to “get under’em” are killing some gadwalls. However mallards are a rarity and in general the Raccoon Creek Wildlife Management Area has been bad! Yesterday morning ( a holiday for most folks) during a “parking lot scouting” expedition, there was a grand total on one hunter in the entire area. That speaks volumes.

Ross is exactly correct. The weather has got the ducks and the hunting shut down. We are taking a few birds each hunt. But it is completly over by 7:30.
The promising element is that we are still seeing several, big flights moving early, each morning. We continue to pull a few into the decoys. They are still hot to the call and respond to decoys, but if it does not happen in the first hour and half, it aint going to happen.
There is no reason for these birds to burn energy while it’s 60 degress.

OK Sports Fans, times are hard for all of the waterfowl hunters across the areas. All reports today were sad singing. Hang in there, for we have some impressive bird numbers. Lots of good surveys in the south and birds are sitting tight on most of the refuges. Birds will not trade from point to point when the warm weather hits. They will not tolerate any of the hunting pressure when this type of weather happens. Birds’ metabolism slow down when warm weather hits, so until Mother Nature releases Old Man Winter or we get some significant rain fall to provide a new food source, times are going to be rough this holiday season. Good luck and Happy New Year.

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 50-60 Degrees
The only reason that we went today is because the weather man promised that it would be rainy and blowing a south 15 to 20 mph wind at 1st light.
Well he got half of it right, At day light I could see the milky way, but the wind was creeping around 10 mph South.
2 hunters – 7 ducks. 4 mallards- 3 gads
all over at 7am.
Talked to some very good hunters that had been saving a hole for a big south wind. 1 greenhead by 7:30. 65 degrees is not your optimal duck hunting situation.
looking forward to next week

Went back to the big creek and hunted the beaver pond. The weather has warmed up alot. Just a slight breeze this morning. Didn’t see the larger number of mallards from the other day, but did get two gadwalls, one green head and two woodies to commit suicide for me. Those were the only ducks seen. Still a great hunt, but ole jack frost needs to come back to visit!
