the geeses just don`t want to go there and thats all they have been showing up in larger numbers in new mexico as you were saying.I think the reason that the geese arennn`t coming down this flyway is becuase a lot more of them that travel from salt lake are staying and wintering in ponds and small resivoirs before they make it down and don`t have to fly south. Also that would be good for cibola as a hunter in that area they should have someting like that but that also means more closed areas and i don`t think that it sells many licenses.thats what you will be looking at in the future of the sport down there the more geese that stay
the more interest and so forth .As tghe geese move out hunters loose interest , and i didn`t really get a chance to see the numbers on martinez lake and the imperial areas but i do know that topok is normally holding up to 1000 geese a yaer and they do blow south and they pass the crit and i assume that they turn there and head for the salton sea .

gentlemen, did anyone else read the waterfowl report from the Pacific Flyway Council about the rocky mountain population of the western canada geese that used to winter in the cibola area…and now is wintering in record numbers in New Mexico the past two years?…it’s on their web site…also, some say that because of the early canada goose season by the molting areas of this species, the extra hunting is causing the birds to fly “too early” into new flight patterns that don’t have hunting…if this isn’t corrected perhaps the flyway number of geese in the cibola area will continue to decline to the 700 or so that was there in the late 70’s????anyone have any comments?…why not have nesting areas for the geese in the cibola area and let some of the flock “overstay and nest”?….

Hay Ho All, It’s 11 days into the New Year. My how waterfowl and Time fly by. On Mon. eve. Rambo, Rio, and I slipped into Eric’s Bay and a crisp North wind was blowin’. I was very excited for my son Rio who was gifted a neat little ol’ Sears, Roebuck, and Co. Mod.21 20 Ga. Pump-action. With double-action side bars, 21 1/2 in. plain barrel, 3 inch chamber and a trigger to end of recoil pad length of 12 inches, whew this gun is almost too cool for Rio!!! Anyway we pulled out at sundown and were all happy with the 1st ducks of the New Year. 1 drake and 1 hen Redhead and 1 beauty of a 60 yard shot by Rambo on a long-tailed drake Pintail. Overall, the water is way up everywhere, and there are not many ducks anywhere in our “zone” at this time. The Honker count is still at 1 or 2. With temps at 70 degrees it’s too nice out here. Looks like the Posse will have to saddle up and ride hard North, to the Mighty Topock Marsh, and hunt up where dem waterfowl might be hangin’ out at. The weather looks very promising for the weekend and I know some of the Posse are itchin’ to draw at the “Slough” on Saturday. It was reported to me that Duckman Dave East and pal harvested 14 birds last Sat. or Sun. at the “Slough”. A big HIGH 5 to you guys!!! That’s the latest from the Castle Rock/Rez Zone. Be safe out there and good shootin’ to all, Rusty and the Chemehuevi Valley Waterfowl Posse

Gentlemen, thank you for your comments……the areas west of the refuge that I was told were “good to hunt” were: the area north of Walter’s camp called three fingers lake, and the unnamed lake on the west side (california side) south west of the cibola lake overlook; about 5 miles away ?????….sound familar to anyone???? is the marsh unit worthwhile in the refuge itself?…..anyone have an idea why the bird count is so low for the refuge????

Saltman you can hunt the river north of the refuge but the geese dont fly past the refuge. Hunting the hokers have been slow this year. I hunted on the west side and had a good day on ducks. The Az side is tough due to the refuge and private property. Farm uint has been slow and have been posting low numbers. You can take a chance and do stand by. If you do try pit 9 or pit 3. Pit 9 get first crack if they head over the farm unit. But as I said low goose count makes it tough.

Hey Ho Salton Sea Man, You may want to talk to a fellow waterfowler named Ron Gober – San Diego Hunting Retriever Club, Chula Vista, Ca.. He has a TON of hunting experience in the Cibola area. Go to google.com for more info.. I have only hunted the Farm Unit 2 for the past 10 years and that is what my son Rio and I like to do there. Ron Gober was a guide in the Cibola area for years. Rick Francis is a well known guide and a good guy, who operates Ultimate Guide Service, maybe he can advise you(928-857-3581) you. Good Luck, Rusty and the Chemehuevi Valley Posse

Gentlemen, are there any areas for waterfowl hunting, on the california side, west or south of the cibola refuge?….are you allowed to hunt the river itself?….is it worthwhile, if you are allowed to hunt the river?….how about to the west of the CRIT refuge?….thanks
