hey rustyduck,

i am going to start hunting the havasu area and i just wanted to get some info on the area from you. where do you launch from. are the launch ramps paved or dirt. how far do you have to travel from the launch area to get to the hunting areas.
are there any closed areas i would need to watch out for. what size/mix of spread are you putting out. how deep is the water in most of the areas you hunt. from your posts it seems you have some great afternoon hunts out there are the afternoon hunts usually productive. are there many other hunters out there. maybe we could put a hunt together and you could show me around.

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 40-45 Degrees
The ducks are here!!! It’s cold and windy. My 7:15 arrival into Eric’s Bay was very rewarding!!! 4 Greenheads, 3 Gadwalls, and 1 Snow Goose. I shoulda/coulda had a limit of Snows and only God is my witness to my shooting follies. 1 flock of 5 and 1 flock of 4 equals 9, right??? Well i could only subtract 1(good grief) and they were all “very much in range!!!” My duck shooting made up for all that very well!!! Posseman Rambo and I are gonna team up and shoot it out wit’ dem birds manana!!! Sack time is NOW. Happy Hunting To All, Rusty and the “Posse”

THIS NOVEMBER WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS OVERWHELMING!!! FROM SHOOTING DUCKS & SNOWS/ROSS’S HERE AND “LANDING SNOWS” UP IN THE TOPOCK MARSH, TO HARVESTING HONKERS AT CIBOLA. WITH SO MANY THRILLS AND OF COURSE THE USUAL SPRINKLE OF “IF ONLY’S,” AND SHOUDA/COULDA’S, HOW COULD THE “POSSEMEN” ASK FOR MORE??? CONGRADULATIONS TO POSSEMAN CUZIN MARIO ON HIS CIBOA HONKERS(Cuz’s 1st Honker on the 2nd day). WITH PLENTY OF “SPIRITUAL MOJO,” OUR LITTLE SPREAD OF OUTLAW DECOYS, 2 BIGFOOT FEEDERS AND MY 11 Y.O. SON RIO HARMONIZING WITH ME ON HIS “WING LOCK” HONKER FLUTE CALL, WE CALLED IN A FAIR AMOUNT OF HONKERS FOR OUR AREA OUT OF BLIND #6. SOME HUNTERS IN THE PITS BEHIND US HARVESTED THEIR SHARE OF BIRDS THAT RIO & I HAD BROKE DOWN FROM HIGH ABOVE. IT WAS THRILLING AND OH SO BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH AS THE BIG BIRDS BROKE FORMATION AND DROPPED DOWN WITH “FULL FLAPS” AND TALKIN’ BACK!!! WE LOVE TO CALL AT AND “WORK IN” HONKERS AT CIBOLA AND SON RIO JUST MISSED HIS FIRTST HONKER, AGAIN!!! THEIR IS ABOUT 1500 OR SO HONKERS(AS OF yesterday) AT CIBOLA AND THEY ARE STEADY TRICKLING IN. CONGRATS GOES TO DUCKMAN SHANE ON HIS DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING HONKER, HE SHOT. IT’S THE ONLY CANADA GOOSE HARVESTED(OR SEEN) DOWN HERE ON OUR END OF THE MARSH, SO FAR THIS YEAR. I’M TOLD DUCK HUNTING IS FAIR AROUND HERE AT THIS TIME WITH WIGEON, MALLARD AND CANVASBACKS BEING BAGGED. DUCKMAN LEO HAS BEEN “HANGIN’ OUT” ALOT AT ERIC’S BAY AND HE HAS BEEN WELL REWARDED. THAT PLACE IS JUST “LEGENDARY”!!! SO MUCH MORE DETAILS AND SO LITTLE TIME TO TYPE ‘CAUSE RIO & I GOTTA LOAD THE BOAT AND GO GET US SOME MORE FEATHERS AND MEMORIES. BE SAFE OUT THERE, THE SWING IS THE THING, AND HAPPY WATERFOWLIN’ TO ALL – Rusty, Rio, Drake, and the “Posse”

I drove down to Picacho thurs last week to check it out as it held some water about 4-5weeks ago. No water now but, millions (make that billions) of mosquitos. Everytime we would get out of the truck we would get swarmed.

“When your hot your hot, when your not, your not” ro so the song goes!!! The north wind hit at 11:00 a.m.. My 6 y.o. son Drake and I finally got out of the house at 11:30. We scooted out due east across the lake to the “South Park ” water blind. With our 6 Snow goose decoys “swimming” about at 20 yards, we were ready. 40 minutes later, 3 white geese approach from out of the south, glide gently into my tiny spread, and only 6 ft. off the water!!! I hammer one, then hammer another, and then MISS the 3rd goose!!! Drake & I are ecstatic!!! Turned out it was 1 Ross and another Snow. Our hunt turned out to be VERY short and sweet. We picked up and came home to celebrate. Back at it for “Sunrise Service with Cuzin Mario, somewher at this awessome “Zoo”!!! Be Safe and the “Swing is the thing!!!” Rusty, Rio, Drake, and the C.V.W.Posse

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 60-65 Degrees
A new wave of birds moved in Tusday so I went at them on Wed. alone. Went scouting and then went into “Golden Pond” for the 1st time in 5 or 6 years. Scratched 1 Greenhead and 3 Teal. and should have had a couple more Mallards but, I got W.A.M.ed!!!At 2:15 Had about 35 Snows come in from outta the south and as lady luck would have it, I left those dekes at home!!! They circled me twice and were bout 150 yard s up and were talkin to my spead loudly. So Thursday I set-up at the top of Jude’s Chute with 6 Snow dekes and a few assorted duck spieces and the MOJO. I whacked 2 Snows, 2 Wigeon, 3 Spoonies, and 1 Greenhead. At 11:15 the Snows came from outta the South, again. I started calling to them as they flew directly due East of me. I had two big Snows peel off of a group of 15 and land in the Snow dekes at 20 yards. I was shaking so bad with excitement as I had 3 flocks of ducks(wigeon & Spoonies) zooming in and all around me, as I was callin’ and working the snows into gunning range. WOW, WOW , WOW what a thrilling hunt!!! Oh thnk you GOD ALMIGHTY, for such a wonderful day of forever lasting memories!!! Friday I went to the “Horseshoe” for the 1st time this year and managed to bag I Greenhead, 1 Susie(OOP’s), and a Spoonie. Not a bad week for out here in the the lil Hava-Zoo N.W.R.!!! Have a safe and sucessful wknd all you waterfowlers!!! Rusty and the “Posse”

Well Tues. & Wed. Duckman Jeff and I were at Jude’s Chute for a 5 bird, 2 Mallards, 3 G.W. Teal total. Today had son Rio and I at Arrowhead Flat. No wind, high wispy clouds, and not much flying. We seen 7 mallards go into the wedge about 8 a.m., about 15 Redheads(just out of range) going north about 10:30, 3 teal about 12:15, and about 35 big ducks diving into the closed zone north of Castle Rock at 12:40. We left at 1:00. The water is very high here and it is making things tough. 25 years ago and up into the mid ’90’s, the water would come down by early Rocktober. Backwaters would recede to ideal lower water levels whereby ponds would be formed. Sandbars would be exposed and goose decoys could be set-up and the goose hunt would be on!!! Oh well, i’ll jus’ keep my finger’s crossed that the water comes down very soon and be happy and grateful for all that “we” have here on the mighty Colordo River!!! Be safe and sucessful all you fellow waterfowlers,
Rusty & the Chemehuevi Valley Waterfowl Posse
