You know where I hunt. 01-10-2009 16:42
Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 0-10 Degrees – Ice
Cold sum biotch this morning. Not a lot flying. The birds are holding tight to their roosts. 3 flocks at first light, one single dropped into the deeks and stayed there. Later I moved up river and managed another goose and 2 golden eyes.

Only 2 weekends to go on this side of the hump.

My Son and I hunted today. The geese flew very well and we had our limits by 10:00 a.m. They are still here and not well educated yet. Good Hunting.

Almost didn’t go out today, felt a little under the weather, so I got a late start.

I killed my first goose of the year at 8:32 then followed that about an hour later with a drake wigeon.

Not much was flying. Hardly any ducks to speak of. but I did have two more flocks of geese get a little too close checking my spread out and I shot a bird out of each group.

Hunted Friday. Pretty miserable. Birds were holding tight on the river. My son and I split up and tried to jump shoot, hoping to push birds back and forth to each other.

The spot I jumped held about 300 geese and a equal amount of Golden eye,Gad walls and wigeon. I could have killed a limit of geese right off but because I didn’t want to take a chance on losing my dog to the ice and fast current I held my fire.

So I watched as they flew to my son. None really got close enough to shoot and by the time they circled back to me they were too high too.

We each took a position and waited for the ducks to return. He got 2 wigeons and a gaddy and I got a drake gaddy.

I haven’t been out since.

hunted near kodak on sunday and shot a four man limit of geese in a few hours the birds seemed pretty fresh and wanting to work… also south of longmont is absolutely loaded with mallards and geese, fields holding a few thousand ducks and geese all over south of the town. the birds are here in force if it warms up there should be plenty to play with for awhile. Merry Christmas

Went out again yesterday, Tues. The predicted weather of cloudy and snow on the way, did not happen. However, I did have two flights come in. The first did two passes and left. I didn’t shoot because I thought they would make one last pass. The second flight a few hours later came right in and I took them as they were landing. Took me two shots to kill one goose. Lots of birds in the air.

I went out Thursday. The morning was beautiful blue sky and no wind. Forecast was cloudy and 5 to 10 mph wind. No birds in the morning and only a few in the air.

Then, the clouds came in ahead of the storm. The sky filled with over 10,000 birds. It clouded up just before noon. By 12:30 I had my four geese. Birds were peeling off every flight and fighting to get into the decoys. While I was picking up, the dog and I had to keep chasing birds away.

I guess the big flights are here, with lots of young birds. Good Hunting

Change of pace. Went after ditch chickens. We put up 6 hens and 2 roosters. First rooster was on my buddy’s side and he missed. Second rooster came up between us and I had lost sight of my buddy and I had to hold my fire.

My no shots fired streak is still in tacked.

Saw a sticker a year ago that said “friends don’t let friends hunt Barr Lake”. I think a similar decoration for Banner Lakes is in order. Have tried and trudged for both ducks and geese out there for the last time. Haven’t even fired a shot in 2 trips.

Lots of geese last weekend flying over a spread of 200 near Julesberg. Nothing decoyed though. Did have 5 whitetails crash my goose spread shortly after sunup. Where the hell were they in archery season??
Onward…

Hunted Saturday and Sunday. Way too nice. Too much open water. The local ponds are where the birds are.

More geese and goldeneye have moved in, and there are a good number of widgeon but after 30 minutes the action trickles to a stop.

12-3 to 12-6

Hunted over 20 DZN deeks this week and between that and the snow it was excellent! Only shot 4 on Wends, thurs was cold snowy and socked in, pulled tons of geese from way high, prolly landed arond 300 birds that day and killed 26 between 8 of us! Fri was another good day still cloudy and really cold-4, 4 of us killed 15 by 11:30 had another 150 geese on the ground! they worked great and mostly all little geese only had 4 that were bigger than 4 or 5 pounds. Sat we showed up with high hopes again but not as lucky, they would lock up glide in and go round and round then split, could of been the very nice conditions, clear calm and sunny or the pit melting off or the pounding they took the last 3 days but still managed 4 and we callled it a week at noon, geese everywhere and saw new geese come in every day.

Went and tried one of the local reservoirs. Got set up in freezing rain. Just sat down and had a good flock bust right over me before I got the gun loaded. I thought it was going to be a good shoot. Not.

Everything stayed just out of range or circled behind me. Shooting from a layout blind sucks.

Toughed it out til 10 hoping some boaters would push some ducks to me. Swamped my waders picking.

Can’t wait to try it again. LOL

Got up at early 30 drove 75 miles and got beat out to the only blinds available.

Turned around and drove back to Debuque SWA. Someone was already set in my favorite spot so I moved up river.

Never fired a shot. The guys in my spot did some shooting but I think it was at dicky birds.

All the ponds from GJ to Rifle are ice free and that’s where all the birds are sitting. Too bad there mostly on private property.

I going to try towards G-wood tomorrow.

We need some winter to show up.

+19 at the blind this morning, Partly cloudy.

I saw gadwall, mallard, widgeon and geese today.

Some birds at first light but I couldn’t hit s hit. Then nothing for 3 hrs. I was just about to pick up when a pair of teal came in and I busted one. Turned out to be a banded hen. Second band I’ve ever picked up.

I was texting my son about the band when I had to put the phone down and double up a drake and hen gadwall.

After that another flock of teal and I killed another hen. Then up river some body jumped a good sized flock of geese and they flew right over me and I got my first goose of the year. I could have killed another goose but my gun jammed.

That was ok, I had to make two trips carrying everything out.

Happiness is a tired lab.

Woke up friday morning and saw some snow out the window and couldn’t help but head out early and get some scouting done, got out there and it was windy and the birds were flying. set up four dozen snows and shot two right off the bat and then two more when they were heading back to the roost. picked up and waited for the afternoon, went out to one of are other fields and noticed two flocks in boardering fields and sat in between them. shot snows all evening long at thirty yards; ended the day with 10 snows and the field i would set up on opening day.

sat. morning rolls around my dad, friend and i set up about 11 doz. canada’s and about 5 dozen snows. right at shooting light a scout flies out and decoys right in; he still had ice on his chest. from there on out had pretty much every group come in and we were done with a three man limit by 6:45a.m. before the main flight had even started. we let the field rest so it could be shot again on sunday.

on sunday we headed out to the field again with a few more guys and decoys. it was hard hiding seven guys but we managed to shoot 20 canadas and a really nice blue, could have had our limits if shooting was a little better. hunted the evening, but the birds didnt even fly managed one more canada. a pretty good weekend i’d say, but there is one more thing. as my friend, dad and i were heading back to the club house to drop the trailer off and a buck ran out from the side of the road and smack we hit him going about 35. we get out of the truck to see the damage and the deer. the damage was bad, but get this the buck was no where to be found , we dragged the deer 17 yards and nothing, very minimal blood and hair. the DOW said it isn’t uncommon for a deer to take off after a hit, and said they are alot tougher then most people think. we looked for about an hour with no luck. the DOW officer said they will contact us if they find the deer. so with that said it was a great and eventful weekend.

My first chance to hunt since 2nd split opened. Still slow but to be expected this time of year.

Got to my blind only to find it stomped down by either elk or moo cows. Couldn’t tell which. Tracks of both, even on my decoy bag that I had left inside.

Anyway I didn’t do too bad. I got 2 drake green heads and a hen. I should have got 2 more but that’s alright. No geese thus far yet. Spent 1/2 the day rebuilding my blind.

alright went out tody and shot a three man limit. i knew this weather would push a few birds down and keep them moving. the morning shoot ws awesome, the birds were moving and working well; so good it took a few boxes to put 18 in the bag. our bag consisted of teal, mallards, gadwall, widgeon, and wood ducks(drakes). i saw alot more birds this weekend then the last, with several flocks of migrating cranes. not sure if i will make it out next weekend but will post if i do.

hunted sunday out of snyder, with a few birds put in the bag. morning shoot was slow with very few big ducks and very few birds flying. buddy and i had one flock of 25 teal come right in and dropped six and that was it for the morning. jumped a few canals to add six more to the bag, but birds were hard to find. in other news saw pheasant, quail, field of geese, and about 400 doves, killed a hostile rattle snake, shot a few p-dogs, and fliped our canoe. in all a pretty eventfull weekend, but still have yet to see many birds move in.

Well got the goose itch earlier than normal this year. so we decided rather than shoot the usual doves that we would go chase the geese on the other side of the hill. Well the plan worked out well and almost too well geese all over but it only took one flock to fill a three man limit. Lets just say the guns were angry and the geese were stupid. Dropped seven when they came in then swung the last three back in cut two and there you have it opening day limit. Saw plenty of teal and mallards moving all morning as well. Great to get after them this early

went out for a quickie after work today, put out seven of our finest decoys in a nice loose fashion and had a nice little shoot. Landed a pair, killed a pair, the pair was all blinged out. Had three more skirt us because there was a car parked at the pit, long story but they thought about landing and so one of them met their maker too. Two bands is a great way to wind down the year though

Matt, thought I’d try it again as the moon is gone. Set up on icy pond early and stayed until I had to leave at 1:30. Geese started flying good at 10:00 and kept it up until I left. Only problem was that, for the first time this season, they would not come to my decoys. Because of the snow storm, maybe they just wanted to go eat. On the way home, I saw several groups of 500 to 1000 birds dropping into the wheat fields around Loveland and Johnsons corner, around 3:00, as you said. Some were headed north.

hey Perro I didnt think anybody hunted when it got colder than o on this side of the mountain.I went out hunting on new years day morning which I’ve done for the last forty years. This time tho it was -20 degrees. I got my duck decoys out just before sunrise, and immediately the birds started flying. I pulled my gun up to shoot but I think my fingers were a little frost bitten because I push my safety off to shoot and I couldn’t get it to work. I then put my hands in my pockets trying to warm them up. While warming my hands, I laid my gun across my lap,at the same time another flock of mallards set their wings coming into my decoys,my young pup couldn’t stand the excitement so she jumped across me and my gun stepping on my trigger gaurd, safety and trigger with her wet feet.Immediately anothe flock came in,I pulled up to shoot and everything was frozen solid,Icouln,t even get my safety off. With thermals blowing down the river it had to be -50 below, time to pack it up.That was the last time I had to hunt the river for the year. I did get some time to hunt the Lamar area this last weekend, but all the lakes in the area are frozen up. Took an axe to the ice,it was a foot deep. There are a few geese flying around, they must be coming from John Martin. I enjoyed your account of your hunt on the river, thats a good way to end the season. PS I saw a flock of widgeons below Big Johns lumber yard after the first of January, seems awfull late for them to be here.

Tried for geese on Sunday. Set up and sat in the blind from nine to noon. Didn’t see or hear one goose. On the way home, I did see a group of maybe 20 in the corn out by I25. I guess it’s been too cold for them.

My buddy and i hunted fri 15 degrees and cloudy not much wind had out around 20DZN and it didnt matter all the geese know exactly where there going and they dont even slow down on the way by, straight to the corn north of Wellington 3 and they stay put til about 2 then back to water, Other friends hunted all day yesterday and same movie different day, they had 5 close but noone paying attention and off they went, it totally sucks for us up here now guess we had it to good early on, if anyone can get permission on the Bleum farm get out there and take a bunch of guys you’ll hammer for sure, need new snow or something to change and with the full moon back that never helps.

Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – Below Zero
Partly cloudy no wind. -2 on the river. Had a pretty good morning. Got all set up with goose deeks and a few mallard deeks well before shooting time. Then sat there for most of an hour. I thought oh boy here we go again. This month has been unbelievible slow.

There was a good group of geese roosting on a gravel bar 150 yards from my blind. They didn’t move at all while I was setting up the spread. I heard a bunch of widgeon take off when I first got there but I figured they’d be back. I thought about chasing those geese off but decided I didn’t feel like making someone else’s day.

After the sun was well up here came a flock of geese right up the river headed towards the geese on the gravel bar.I began calling and I couldn’t believe it. I called that flock off those live birds and they headed straight for my spread and set their wings. As they passed my blind at 30 yards I opened up and dropped 2 right into the deeks. All that and those geese on the gravel bar had stayed put. They must have figured they were safe.

Another 1/2 hour went by and here come another flock of about 10 come by. I started calling again and turned them back to me.They made 2 big passes around me. They then made a bigger swing around behind me and I lost sight of them. Then another larger flock passed to my left but at higher altitude. I began calling at them having give up on the other bunch. That bunch broke up and about 6 pealed off and headed my way. They were over 200 yards out and I was laying it on them pretty hard when out from my right side came the first bunch I had circling me. I thought for sure I had blown them away as they had been only 70 yards to my right, but no here they come.

The lead bird was about 10 yards ahead of the rest and as I only needed one more to fill my limit I waited on her. She set her wings and with feet down glided right into a swarm of #2’s.

The rest of the morning I concentrated on filling a duck limit. I’d like to say I filled that too but no dice. I did get a nice greenhead and a widgeon drake though.

This probably is my last hunt for the season here on the western slope. Next weekend I’m headed east and I’m going to miss the closer. I may take my gun with me in case I get a chance at some Arkansas River ducks.

Anyone hunt in the Ft. Morgan area lately?? Heading up that way this weekend and wanted to see if there are still birds in the area. Will probably be hunting river property. Any reports would be a big help.

Wednesday got two greaters, should have had 4. Snow storm chased me away. Tried again Friday, but the wind must have hit 30 (was supposed to be less than 15 all day) so I chased decoys most of the day. Did have one flight come in but I misjudged the lead because of the wind. So they are still out there for you.

Hunted yesterday and birds on the move early again, wind kept changing and the only geese we had come in the deeks were totally wrong they were killable but didnt want a repeat of yesterday so let them swing and they left oh well.
Good news saw 2 huge waves of new geese come in yesterday 1/4 went on a lake just south of town and the rest went to Rawhide so hopefully we got new meat to play with.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Below Zero
started off on thursday hunting a warm water slough , snow was heavy and did not let up all day, 7 ducks and 3 geese ( should have had over 20 ducks but there was some poor shooting ).
on friday it was COLD! 8 below at 7am and didint get a whole lot warmer, no bird movement till 10am then it was good for about 3 hrs , then everything shut down again at 1 pm ,8 geese were shot
on saturday , slept in till 8 am then set up, could have waited till noon to get out there, didint see a bird till 2 pm , only saw 2 flocks due to below zero temps , killed 7 geese in the winter wheat, then about 3 pm picked up and went to the warm water slough mallards were all over it when we showed up, it was fast and furious, ended up with 4 ringnecks a lesser scaup and 3 mallards, then at 4:10 a flock of 20 canadas dropped in at we took 4 to finish out the day.
sunday started slow ( 5 below ) but around 9 am i shot a pair of wood ducks and a lesser scaup soon followed, around 10 am we went back to the winter wheat, just in time too , the birds were working great, shot 9 canadas by 1pm , then back to the slough for a couple of gadwalls, finished with 14 birds for the day.
bird numbers have dropped dramaticly in the last week, lets hope a warm front moves in or we are gonna lose whats left.

been at it alot lately and not much for good results just not good numbers of geese around, today i saw alot more mainly around mid day and they are all landing in a corn field annexed into the city limits so not much we can do with a couple hundred geese landing across the street. oh well will keep after them til something good happens

3 of us hit it this morning, kinda worried heard from several guys that there were no geese left and it was lookin that way early. Didnt see a goose til 10 then started seeing flocks goin up the interstate from south to north, then a huge flock of a thousand or so got up from due east of town and kinda went in all directions, sucked in 6 from it only killed 3 and killed a single that landed in the deeks without anyone seein him and thats was it for us, wellington 3&4 froze solid no birds on them so not sure if those were Rawhide geese or town geese? Be at it again in the morning.

sunday morning, set up in a winter wheat field close to a roost, not much action till about 10am….. then it got HOT! 4 man limits in about 2 hours, mostly big geese , a few lessers but we were being pretty selective, It’s nice to see the big geese down, they decoy alot better than the little guys

Cloudy, Snow Flurries – –
3 of headed down yesterday morning and not quite sure what to expect, all the lakes around us are froze and pit has been hunted all week by a couple other guys in on the lease and they shot 17 in 4 days. Get set up only have been puttin out about 12dzn since it has snowed, 8:30 a pair dives in we kill them 10 6 sneek rite in and we hammer all 6, then a flock of 15 comes in skirts us we have 2 killable geese we let them swing and they land about 150 yards west of us, then perfect a little flock of 4 drop out of a big flock of 80 or so bomb rite in and Damn! only killed 3 of them, half hour later we kill the limit bird out of a nice flock and were filled by 11:30! Seems that little to no callin is workin best, most of the birds have snuk rite up on us when were havent been paying attention and barely makin any noise at all. Only saw maybe 200 geese all day so hope they didnt bug out.
