6 inches of snow and still snowin when we got to the pit, only set out 10 dzn deeks and were ready. Not much movin til 10, landed a nice bunch ended up with 4 then about half hour later got another bunch in killed 4 out of it, sucked a single in killed him then another bunch of around 8 killed 4 more, only need 3 to finish and 3 come by they go around and around we dont shoot and they leave! Damn! We decide thats good enough and gettin ready to leave someone suggest to wait for 30 min before we pick up and it was a good choice not long after we get 30 to bomb rite in and we fill, it was awesome geese worked great! All really little geese but it was a blast.

No much movement yesterday am the afternoon was a different story good movement the last 2 hours of the day seen a two mile black cloud of geese working out around rawhide and had a few coming from the FoCo area that worked us really well. Also heard about alot of movement in the mead area in the afternoon after zero action in the am. Not positive but I think its def the moon that has things all out of whack so I decided to sleep in today and I am gettin after them this afternoon

WOW what a difference a day makes, geese everywhere yesterday and today nothin! Set out the big spread again with hopes of a repeat performance of yesterday but no go, had a single come rite in first thing, im not loaded tell the ol man to hammer him when he is ready, goose goes round and around 3 times 10ft off the ground and leaves no shots fired, ol man didnt hear me say shoot em he thought i wanted to land him, oh well thought that was just the begining but it was actually the end he was the only thing that came over. Only saw about 400 geese total today nothin like the thousands the days before.

Pretty disappointed on Sunday. Really no morning flight at all. Shot one spooner and a teal and pretty much suntanned the rest of the day. Very few birds / shots in the area at all.
Need a front to perk things up around this area.
If anyone plans to go out and would like info on individual pond condidions, shoot a PM to me and I’ll let you know.

Decent #’S of birds in the area. Only problem has been being where they want to be. Last night they were in the barley and I was in the corn.

This morning, I set up in the barley and they wanted to be in the corn!!!!

Thats hunting I guess.

I have been setting out 5 dozen dekes each trip…a mix of FB’s, Silos and Shells. The geese that have been working have been liking them just fine. It’s just hard to compete with a field full of live geese just across the road from the field you are hunting!

Lots of little chickens out east of Windsor. Did not see a goose over 5 lbs and every one shot was under three had a hard time finishing geese with so many geese in the area you would have a flock working really nice and another would show up an pull em away. Great to be back in goose mode though. Heard that the groups running 20 plus dozen full bodies were having good success we ran about ten and it was just not quite right.

had a great weekend, got into some snows on friday morning, killed 8, then got in the truck and followed the strings of geese to another field, probaly close to 10k on this one, set up here on sat morning and shot 41 snows , the hardest part was digging in all the layout blinds on friday night, After a nice lunch we went to the duck spot and shot 27 ducks , a mix of redheads, widgeon, pintails and 1 malard.
Sunday was bluebird weather and not as good of a shoot, but still ended up with 4 mallards and 6 widgeon

Good numbers of various smaller subspecies of Canadas entering the front range almost daily, and the common initial staging areas are seeing the bulk of the activity as the birds have only begun to spread out in the last couple of days areas holding very huntable numbers are big Windsor Res.,north of Windsor,,Fossil Creek Res.,and areas east around Empire Res. are also holding good numbers along with some snows.During the last few days of pit digging I have seen new birds every day and no established real flight lines, the birds are changing daily as it seems, looks as though it is shaping up for a good opener, lots of little birds to play with.Saw one feild this morning with around 4 grand in the typical little goose ball that you can’t mimic with yours, your buddies and all your friends decoys that covered half a feild. It looked like 4 thousand termites running across the feild, not a bird standing still,if you could mimic that you would really have something!!Don’t stop the call or the flag,go big or go home!!

Nothing wrong with the SWA’s once we have enough weather to push ducks to the river. At this point there has been no migration and the local ducks are sitting on safe “private” water. They know where they have and have not been shot at. The SWA’s will be fine once we get a push of migrating waterfowl and the ponds freeze. Just my opinion.

I am new to the area, and am trying to learn my way around. I spent two days last week scouting out all of the SWA’s from Jackson Res to Jumbo Res. FOr the most part I was dissappointed with the number of birds I saw. I am assuming there has not been enough weather to push a significant # of birds down yet? Am I just looking in the wrong places?

Anyway was also amazed at the # of hunters I ran into at the SWA’s. I have done most of my hunting in Idaho and think I have been spoiled.

Had a good day on saturday morning on a small private pond. Limited out on teal, and gadwall. Did not see any big ducks.

Sounds like a lot of you guys have been doing some damage. Is the secret to get access to private land? Should I give up on the SWA’s?

Would appreciate any words of wisdom. Good luck.

Ended up having a super Robo hunt in a silage cut cornfield over the weekend, weather turned extremely windy and my friend and I both thought it would send the ducks out to feed a little early, not the case although they came early enough to collect 5 mallards a piece wow got to love duck hunting in the dirt!! Couldn’t get enough and neither could my 5,and 6 year old boys as we left deputy dog at home and had boy retrievers the next morning and shot 10 more drake mallards on the dirt.Made some great tasting mallard k-bobs wrapped in bacon on the grill with baked taters to finish out the weekend, and now am done with Colorado for a week on a good note for my annual trip to the prairies of the north have fun down here,OH CANADA HERE I COME!!!

Dang speed goat hunters!!!

Hunted the new spot again this morning, hoped for a quick shoot before I came into work.

The spot I planned on hunting is one of 4 ponds located on the property I have recently gained access to.

My plan was to hunt a pond that I had scouted after hunting Sat. and that was COVERED up with ducks that afternoon…..When I left the spot Sat. the only duck hunting that had taken place was on the far pond 1/2 mile from the pond I planned on hunting today and I was the only one hunting the place……

When I pulled up at 0530 this morning…it was obvious that something big had changed as I could not hear or see any sign of waterfowl on the pond….

A quick “once over” of the area revealed 30-50 empty hulls all over the ground surrounding the pond 🙁

It would appear that the Antelope hunters I ran into Saturday morning returned Sunday with an appetite for ducks!!!!

I moved to the far pond (located behind 2 gates and one that you have to want to get to to find) and set up anyway……there were a few hulls on the ground and feathers EVERYWHERE……

Needless to say….The result was my first skunk of the season.

I did not even see a bird within 1/2mile all morning…..I did see several large flocks moving south like they had somewhere to be…..The ice on the decoys was nice sight…hopefully this colder weather will get some birds moving.

Saturday my father and I set up on a pond in a corn field and had a really good shoot. We were able to take 2 drake mallards, 2 drake widgeon, 3 drake woodies, and 5 teal. For the rest of the day we just sat around shooting doves, didn’t get our limits, but it was fun none the less.
Sunday came around and it was a bit slower. My father and I managed to take 4 woodies, 3 of which were drakes and 3 teal. In all it was a great opening weekend.

Saturday morning 2 buddies and i set up on a small pothole near a large roost, there were so many ducks buzzing us at first light it was CRAZY ! we had decided to hold out for drakes only due to the preivous evening’s scouting trip, we filled out a 3 man limit in 3 hours, could have been done in 30 minutes, heres the tally, 6 drake red heads, 2 drake mallards, 3 drake pintails, 1 bwt and the rest were wigeon.
this was some great action, many many birds in the decoys all morning.
Other friends hunting nearby also had excellent success with 5 other guys limiting out by 10 am

on sunday it was a bit slower and the wind had changed on us also very cloudy, these ducks wise up fast, we stopped all calling and the birds began to work, 2 of us filled out our limits by 8:30 mostly wigeon and mallards, 1 gwt

Hunted a new spot east of Walsenburg this morning. Got in place by 0530 to calm winds and t-shirt weather.

I ran the ducks off of the pond setting dekes and they just kept trying to get back in…

About 6 minutes after legal shooting light, I dropped my 1st ever triple on ducks!! I dropped 2 Widgeon from a group landing in the dekes and 1 teal that picked up off of the pond with the shooting then circled back around and was landing in the dekes and dead birds.

I held on the next two groups of teal hoping for a shot at some of the mallards I had seen while scouting the day before…..it paid off….Kinda..I wound up with 1 mallard, another widgeon, and finished off the morning on a group of BWT.

This is the second opener I have hunted this year (hunted the W side opener last weekend) and the 1st of the year on private land…..man what a difference! It sure was nice to be set up before shooting light and not have somebody out walking around!

This mornings setup consisted of 6 G&H floaters (mostly hens with one drake mallard) and 1 spinner. I set up in a layout on the edge of the pond and, due to the height of the grass, my layout practically dissapeared. The pre-season scouting and game plan paid off….the longest shot of the morning was roughly 20 yards….Killed everything I shot at and did not leave any witness’.

Gonna hit another hole in the morning about 1/2 mile away….hoping for a good shoot as I have to be to work by 10!

Good luck boy’s! Shoot em’ in the face!

Hunted the opener today and had a fantastic shoot, had to spook off about 100 before shooting hours as to not crack at them in one bird educating mess. They returned to our sheet water with abandon and it didn’t take long to collect a two man limit, although it was not as leisure of a pace as I was hoping, was surprised at the amount of mallards,we ended up with 8 greenies, two gadwall, and two bluewings. The teal were like flies and also had that report from two other groups, one in Ft. Lupton east and one west of Brighton. Both of these guys filled up with 18 for each group but few mallards so I must have had a mallard hotspot I guess.I watched twelve get taken this morning but haven’t had my licks yet but have a good prospect for a fun hunt with me a friend and my two boys this evening on a robo field shoot, will report after that. This morning used two dozen decoys, mostly hens and Gadwalls with a sprinkle of teal, wonderduck paddlewheel, jerk cord and a lucky duck.Took the robo down after the first 15 minutes as they wouldn’t finish it seemed to help.

The morning started off great, i had my preferred spot ( on public land ) , the birds were there, only problem was my BRAND NEW extrema 2 wouldnt fire ( WHAT THE BERETTA) To say i was dissapointed would be an understatement, after i drove all the way home and took the gun back to sportsmans warehouse, Where it was discovered that a o ring was in between the piston and the sleeve not allowing the bolt to close all the way. ( THANK YOU SPORTSMANS WAREHOUSE IN LITTLETON FOR SOME EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE, I WAS MAD WHEN I WALKED IN THE DOOR, AND THEY DID EVERYTHING THEY COULD TO HELP THE SITUATION )
Now as for the pair of guys that waited till after shooting light to walk within 80 yards of my decoys and begin pass shooting, who taught you respect for your fellow hunters ! oh yeah, the were dressed in all black and were wearing white hats, real nice job morons, i would put there lic plate #’s pn here , but that won’t change anything now.
Trying it agin tommorow , WITH A GUN THAT WORKS

Dan,

I have not hunted that area in the last 3 years but when I was hunting over there I never saw any hunters on those ponds. Which leads me to believe that hunting is not allowed on them. However, I hunted that area mostly on weekdays when there was not a whole lot of other folks in the area.

Took out 2 youth hunters this morning saw one good bunch of geese, they decoyed awesome after the smoke cleared 3 geese on the ground 2 very happy youths and to put on the frosting 2 of three birds had jewelry on the legs and each harvested a band. The coolest thing of all was one was a first goose for the young man how cool is that!!Even without the band it would have made a impression, just adds another body to the list of monsters we become!!

Guys, I am coming to Colorado to a friend’s ranch in Rio Grande County on October 15 to trout fish for a few days. My buddy is not much of a hunter, but I did some homework and found out that it is duck season while I am there. Now I am really fired up for some “cast and blast” on this trip. I also discovered that some of the upland birds are in season such as grouse, chukkar and ptarmigan. The problem is that when it comes to upland birds I don’t know what to expect since my buddy is a novice at wingshooting. Are any of you familiar with the area and can you give me some idea of what to expect this time of year? BY the way, the Rio Grande runs right through the middle of the property. Thanks!

First chance to get out for Teal was this morning……Lots of birds in the Ramah area…..also lots of skybusting going on…..for the umpteenth year in a row, heard lots of shooting well before legal shooting light.

On the plus side, wound up with 3 birds by 0900 (all blue wing) shoulda had a limit but some poor shooting on my part sent me home 1 short.

Beautiful morning, topped off by some excellent dog work….Can’t wait for the big duck opener!

went dove hunting and had a piss poor shoot. The doves are still around, but since there is an abundance of food the doves are scattered and not grouped up. And since there is an abundance of food there is no est. flight path. So maybe this cold front will bunch the birds up. who knows.

Hunted the first two days of the teal opener, and had success both days although not hot and furious as in the past. Both days landed good numbers of big ducks and that always gets the juices flowing.Shot all bluewings as expected, and passed a shot because of mixed in shovelers yesterday. Even had a pair of pintails land this morning, with a drake that could be picked out that was cool.Watch out for the shoveloaders, good luck.BY THE WAY, I KNOW THERE ARE OTHERS OUT THERE BECAUSE I HEARD YOUR SHOOTING,POST UP FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! ALSO HAVE THE DOVES VANISHED OR IS IT JUST ME AND THE SPOTS I’M LOOKIN???

VH,
There are snows that sit in the Brush area year round. Weird I know but they don’t leave, but then again the roost never freezes. Now there is fluctuation in numbers throughout the season, but there always seems to be some hanging around. I usually see the most in November and February through March.

Towens,

Do you see snows in Brush on a regular basis? If so what is the average flock size? Thanks,

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 35-40 Degrees
For all you snow goose hunters out there I have a report. Left Thursday and hunted Friday with no luck. Only used a few dozen decoys, just didn’t have the drawing power of big spreads. On Thursday there were about 4 thousand snows and several migratory flocks came in from the south. On Saturday hunted with a few huntin’ buds and set out a massive spread with e-callers. There was an increase in snow numbers to about 8 to 10 thousand I’d say. The birds would not leave the roost for some reason, I think because of the high winds, but something got them up and pushed them our way. We had about 300+ birds lock up and come in but our shooting wasn’t great and we only dropped a few, then a flock of about 20 came in, and again poor shooting. Ended up shooting 7 and a fellow hunter got a band. If we would have been about 50 yards away from the spread we would have had the birds’ right over top, but I guess we know what to do next time. I heard a report from the Julesburg area and the birds are starting to show up but not in big numbers just yet, another week or so and the birds should be back on schedule.

Have not been able to hunt much the last month because of school but I decided to get out this weekend and ended up getting 12 geese between two of us Saturday hunted a field covered in snow and managed to call in two singles and they died, that afternoon changed tactics anset up on a frozen pond. The geese loved it landed four flocks and when they do that its not hard to fill a limit so we took turns shooting, Sunday went out with the same idea in mind but had another guy set up on the same property and the prop is just too small for that had geese work but some people dont beleive in shootin them with the feet down so I resorted to shooting them at about 50 yards and dumped two that afternoon the wind picked up and nothing flew bad way to end a sub par goose season. On a good note we had our best duck season ever group of four ended up with well over 800 so i cant complain.

Ended the season with a bang. Headed out Thurs. afternoon, got to the field(wheat) in time to see my buddy that was already in the pit whack two out of a bunch. The geese had just started to fly and me and my other friend ran out to the pit in time for another nice flock, they came right in and we killed 6 between the three of us. Waited about ten minutes for a single to come in and fill the limit. It was almost too quick and easy.

Friday went back to the same wheat field and the wind was ripping. Managed to get the only four geese that came in before the wind got too bad. Decoys were tumbling and the birds were holding tight.

Saturday I took 4 guys out and had a long slow day but managed 6 geese with several opportunities. Saw a LOT more geese. Several migrating flocks coming back into the area from all directions. Even saw some high flying snows and thousands of mallards were working a corn field to the east of us. Geese went to wheat fields in the a.m. and corn in the p.m. One of the few times this year there was a morning and afternoon push. Had a couple thousand geese in the field next to us and it was hard to compete with that.

Sunday went back to the wheat field near the river with a full pit of 6. We got our 18 shortly after noon. Shot smaller bunches (<20 birds). Birds started off a little weary and wouldn't finish all the way. We got the last- day-of-the-season itch so we started taking shots at any birds within 45 yards. Mid-day the birds finished real nice and even had some trying to land on us while we were taking pictures with the truck and trailer in the field! Saw even more geese today than in the past few weeks. Again, migrators showing up, a couple flocks of snows, and mallards everywhere. Saw several(5-10) thousand geese. They were scattered and flying in no particular pattern. All in all this year was really goofy with all the snow and cold. We got lucky with the fields we had and consistently got into them. If some snows start using the area we might give it a shot. Other than that, till next fall. Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 35-40 Degrees
Left for the field friday after school and did a little pass shooting with my father. That evening we took 2 specs and a nice honker. Saturday morning came around and it was foggy, but it helped us in the long run. set up 3 dozen HC’s and waited. Saw and heard tons of birds. Had about 10 snows sneek in at about 35 yards and didn’t get a shot off, however we managed to limit by 10:30 with a bonus snow. Hunted sunday and it was pretty slow, saw tons of birds but just couldn’t get any to finish. Shot 4 canadas and called it quits. Saw one of our fields full of geese, so that’s where i will be next weekend. There are ten’s of thousands of geese in the brush area. Good Hunting. Travis

Believe it or not.
I took my son goose hunting for the first time Monday the 5th. Decoys set and first flock of geese approach. They start to land and we come up blasting. Thought we had missed everthing butt about 300 yards away a lone goose starts to drop. I said Zach I think you killed your first goose. Zach said to me I think it fell over by my truck, ok will pick it up when were done. After the hunt Zach went to get his truck to pick up the decoys. As we gathered up the decoys we noticed blood on the wind sheild of the truck.I told my son I thought that goose feel over by your truck. When Zach opened up the tailgate on his truck to his surprise the goose had crashed into the bed of his truck. I told Zach to bad Elk doin’t do that.
Good Hunting Camoking.

Hunted a hay field today with my father and had a “decent” shoot. We knew the birds wouldn’t fly until late so we slept in. When we got to the field it was cold, real cold. Before setting up the decoys we jumped some warm water sloughs and had some luck, more so for me. I shot a banded drake mallard, what a way to end the season. My father shot a widgeon, and two mallards. So on to the goose hunt. Set up a spread of 3 dozen with good response from the birds. Only bad thing was my Benelli wasn’t cycling out the shells, so I was shooting a single shot Benelli. I was pissed, had two groups work right in and only dropped one. My father shot, but when he shoots at incoming geese it’s like he has never shot a gun before. Went to lunch and came back to about ten in the decoys, no way to get them, so that was that and we ended the day with two geese. Saw thousands of geese in the area, I guess it just depends on where you are.

Took 4 guys out to a wheat field today. Well, there might be some wheat under all the snow, for now its just one huge snow drift. Turned out to be a long cold day(-13 when we set up and never got above single digits). Shot the first goose we saw at about 10 am and things were looking good. Didn’t see more than a 100 birds until 3 o’clock and were able to stop some on their way to the river. Wind shifted and they came in kind of funny but managed 8 more. Only one greater and the rest bigger lessers. Should have had more but thats the way it goes. Id say there is less than a thousand birds in the area, still roosted on the river and feeding in some fields in no mans land. Sounds like some might have headed west, we got about a foot of snow last weekend and it isn’t melting anytime soon.

Set the monster spread out fri and ready to rumble, for the last few weeks birds havent been movin until later like 9:30 or 10 but fri the first ones started at 6:45 and didnt stop all day. Hunted all day with no shots fired had a few birds work and had some 20 feet above the pit but thought they were gonna finish but not go. Today killed one single rite off the bat about 7 and only stuck it out til noon there is alot of geese around and i think some new ones moved in in the last few days but everything is extremly patterned and know what and where they want and it really hard to compete with 10,000 real geese not far from the pit.

Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 25-30 Degrees – Ice
Hunted yesterday afternoon. Got to my spot a little late. I was able to take a couple of greenheads that ventured a little too close to the goose deks. The colorado is frozen up from Cameo to Debeque canyon and beyond. From there to Rifle it is shelfed up and hard to hunt.

There are a lot of geese around the GJ area and I had close to a thousand fly over me on their way to roost but too high to shoot.

One more weekend to go.

The river isn’t frozen and there are a good number of ducks and geese using the river. Lots of Mallards, Widgeon and Pintails! Be careful and know what species of duck you are shooting at. We actually had a group of 12 Pintails land in our decoy spread today. Good Luck to everyone.

Went out with a buddy after school today and had a great shoot. We went out just for ducks but ended up with a big goose and two mixed bag limits of golden eyes, mallards, red heads, and ring bills, all of which were drakes. When we got to out pond we had to break up the ice but once that was done the birds just came right in.

Colorado river east of Grand Jct. 01-12-2007 22:16
Cloudy, Snow & Rain Mix – 35-40 Degrees
I haven’t had too much to report the last couple of weekends.

Today I did an afternoon hunt down by grand jct. Nothing flying until 4 pm then there was a good number of geese. I saw a couple hundred or more leave a roosting area and head down river.

I had only one flock come in to my deks but that was all I needed. I shot my limit out of that one flock and also picked up my first banded bird in 30+ yrs of waterfowl hunting.
