Cloudy, Winds Calm – 40-45 Degrees
Shot the Richvale blind with a buddy this morning and had our limit by 8:45. One hell of a teal shoot! 12 teal and 2 wigeon.

Shot a NVR on Wed with a low reservation draw that mallardman pulled.

We shot the best blind on the refuge and were rewarded with 3 limits by 10. Could have been done by 8, but I was ballisticly challenged.

Drove past Sac and it was wall to wall snows. Not nearly as many ducks as last week. Must have move back up north.

AS AN ADDENDUM TO MY LAST POST I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT THE AREA JUST NORTH OF “SALLY’S PLACE” THE GORRILL RANCH, ON THE WEST SIDE OF MIDWAY, HOLDS AN IMMENSE NUMBER OF SPRIG AND SPECKS. NORTH OF THAT IS RANCHO ESQUAN, KEN HOFMANNS PLACE THAT DOES LIKEWISE. NEED SOME WEATHER TO MOVE THEM…..

drove through richvale yesterday and today up midway and it appears too early yet for any number of birds. used to hunt right off colony park dr south of nelson-shippee rd for 4 years but gave it up due to the long walk out in disced mud to the island blind as well as no shooting til 12/15 and if rains come and flooding developes the birds are gone til……..hope this helps somewhat.

North Sacto Valley 11-29-2010 17:48
Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 40-45 Degrees
Mixed results this past weekend. Again for the 2nd weekend straight we had a brisk SE wind on Saturday…..no bueno! A duck limit could be had if you had the resilience to wait it out, stay awake and make your shots count. Ended up w/ a pair of bulls and pair of mallards before 12 noon quit time. For whatever reasons hunters at the very far north end of the Valley did well in no time.

Tule fog and a bad fog Sunday AM. Came in at 4:00am and locked the ducks out and the hunters in as is the case w/ a low hanging tule. Scratched a mixed bag limit by 9:30am….teal and a pair of widges. Quite a few hunters did well on snows and again it was the hunters in the far north end. There are outrageously large grinds of snows across the Valley for this early in the season.

Look for a weather disturbance mid-week of which the weather boys are confused over. Due to rapidly shifting air currents could be a quick but hard blow or just a 24 hour soft drizzle. “Dear Santa….all we want for Xmas is a mile high fog that sets in for 7-10 days….please”!!!

If you want to read an interesting report/observation go to the CANADA Section(State Selection) and see Larry Kaumeyer’s recent post. Fair breeding and hatch for 2010 and could be outstanding in 2011.

North Sacramento Valley 11-22-2010 11:24
Cloudy, Rain & Thunderstorms – 45-50 Degrees
Wild n wooly on Saturday! The mid-afternoon downpour and 20mph wind really shook-up the birds for a few hours. Good mallard hunting and the 1st of the greenwing teal balls w/ occasional 20+ widgeon bundles. The storm was too late for the AM goose flight and the geese sat it out in the PM.

As expected on Sunday! In the north Valley as always on a clear day after a storm nada. The full moon late Sat nite didn’t help either.

Looks like a fair number of specs have moved south along w/ the snows. Hope to get them back if we catch a few days soon w/ strong NW winds…we’ll see! Huge, I mean huge snow migration from the north on Sunday…spectacular sight against the crystal blue sky. With the early deep freeze and blizzard conditions all the way from the Prairies thru Montana to eastern Oregon to Klamath we should see a big influx of new birds this week. With fields flooding fast and the new birds I predict it will be “game on” over the Holiday weekend.

Arctic Blast – Froze Out
Still waiting for water. Maybe in time for the weekend storm I am told. Sure were a ton of specs up there in the Sacto Valley when we went up to work on the place last week. I went pheasant hunting instead. It must of been 80 at Hasting’s on Monday. Not very ducky. Don’t miss Bone Valley anymore.

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 60-65 Degrees
Slowwwww weekend! Except for the specs and snows. Very few ducks in the air but the # of specs is outstanding. Maybe the most I have ever seen in the north Valley. Saturday was goose day thanks to the sustained 20mph+ wind. Between now and Dec 1st is the time to get specs so keep a watch on the weather….catch a windy day and you’ll get into some great action on the geese.

Very few ducks north of #162. Good duck hunting reported just north and adjacent to the Sink….the Audobon refuge is loaded w/ birds. Heard there were lots of birds on the west side of the Sacto River. Fields now half flooded and should be full by this weekend so I expect the ducks will finally show. Forecast calls for wet and windy conditions Fri-Sun.

My group will be able to start hunting later in the week and for sure by Saturday. Still some rice to be harvested and plenty of fields to be tilled.

Spent the entire weekend setting the spreads and brushing the blinds. Saw a few early morning duck flights. Specs–specs–and more specs….several of our dry fields had flocks of 500-1000 and there was a constant daily flight of specs moving in from the north. Hunters who had water in the fields just north and adjacent to the Butte Sink did well on mallards both Sat-Sun. More to report next week as the season ramps up and gets completely underway.

JC come on man. The State Parks get this money. The Parks need to realize that there are too many and certainly too many that have no special purpose. There are a ton of parks that are redwood forests, almost all of which are not old growth stands. Why not make money managing these stands properly. I could make the state parks more money this way, and reduce the fire hazards, and fix all of the erosion problems and still have money left over.

The parks need to start paying for themselves. I have a state park right next door and they can’t even staff it to collect entrance fees because not enough people visit it.

Maybe if Prop 19 passes the parks can grow all the pot they want and make some money legally and ethically. The dope growers already seem to have the operations set up.

Vote “yes” on proposition 21 10-19-2010 18:41
– – –
PLEASE REMEMBER to vote “yes” on Proposition 21…..this November 2.

The requested $18 added fee for vehicle registrations will go DIRECTLY to a Wildlife and Wildlife Lands fund to be used solely for this purpose and not to the
General Fund to compete w/ all the other agencies like schools, roads, etc. etc.

If approved this would amount to $35 million in new funds for the preservation, maintenance and restoration of vitally needed wildlife lands, especially wetlands and surrounding grasslands needed for successful waterfowl nesting.

Thanks for your support!

Rice fields are drained but it’s gonna be awhile to harvest time. This current heat wave will help but from what I saw yesterday the rice got a ways to go…too green looking.

Headed to Canada this Saturday for 2 weeks. Take care and will post when I’m back on October 16th.

thanks for the info jc. this may or not be good for us in the sacramento or or the san joaquin valleys area–but from i gather tule lake/lower klamath will not have very much water for the coming season. due to lack of rain to fill klamath lake and some other areas there may be only one or two marsh areas with water and sump 1b may not get any water at all. i guess that could help us in kind of a sad way is that a lot of the waterfowl may just fly past that area altogether!!

From the hunters I talked to the Junior Hunt this past weekend was generally poor. Lots of ducks have returned to the north valley from the flooded bypasses but their scattered in a large area where most of the rice fields have standing water. Some hunters did far better on specs than ducks. Saw one field that had to be holding upwards of 3000 specs.

On the bright side, we continue to get precipitation w/ rain forecasted for most of this week. So far we’re slightly ahead of the normal precip for this date so let’s hope the rains keep come’in.

The survey is poorly written and doesn’t fully explain what is going on behind the doors.

Looking over the proposed AHM framework, in the last 10 years, we would have had a closed season twice. How this is going to help us, I’m not sure. They are still basing all of the framework on the total US/NA population and not breaking it up by flyways.

Well, we went out w/ nary a whimper this past weekend. Birds never returned after the series of storms. Too much water in the bypasses and there was never a good north wind to bring them back. Llano Seco, Howard Slough and Little Dry Creek refuges were completely birdless incl some of the larger private safety zones that had been holding birds all season.

All in all it was a pretty good season and consistent until the past 10 days. Let’s hope the Prairies and Dakotas have more snow and good Spring rains and we get over our drought hump come April. AND the Feds keep us into a 2 sprig zone for next season.

Everyone take care, sharpen your fishing hooks and ready your turkey hunting gear. April 1st is just around the corner!

All Mallards
And all killed in “nature friendly” California.
Pictures don’t lie.
1,387 ducks in 1 day by 4 hunters.
Took the Indians quite a while to clean that many!!!
You need to see the pics !!
$9,709 + tips California Indian Reservation hunts are tops.

We just started our “kill all you can” portion of the goose season this week.
Anything goes… Recorded calling w/ a 250 watt sound system seems to be working this year. We’re going to take a generator w/ us and try 1000 watts.

I think it would be an honor to get booted off the Refuge Forums. That place is a morass of useless information and brain dead bantering.

Tougher hunting this past weekend! Very few birds EXCEPT for sprig. On Sat between 8-10am loads of new sprig came from the north….new birds to the area. I had large flocks lock on my spread from way on yonder and come barreling in. Where did the new birds come from…Klamath, Oregon, all the smaller lakes north of Redding???

Sun was disappointing to say the least! A few sprig and teal flying in the AM and nothing more.

Word is all the birds are holed-up in the flooded Sutter Bypass and partially flooded Yolo Basin. Amazing how fast ducks can find new water loaded w/ food. Anybody’s guess how the season’s last week will turnout. If the water recedes quick enough in the bypasses it’s game on when the birds return probably mid-week. If not, well….it was a good season!!!

Oh yeah! One more thing…w/ the flooded roads like #162 in spots, be careful and lower your speed. I found out the hard way at 6:00am on Sat when I hit a foot of water on #162 and ZZ Rd. at 50mph. 6 seconds of sheer terror and I ended up in the ditch in ‘4 of water. Thank God I didn’t get hurt and there was no other traffic and I avoided a telephone pole. Many thanks to the two good samaritans from South Wind duck club who towed me out and to our own EMRDUCK here who was the 1st to happen along. Thanks Mike!

hey to you field editors that say you are–if you aren’t going to to the job–at least be man enough to say you don’t want to do it–and take your name and resume off the forum ok? i will say right now i do not want to do it. AT least Mr. Cunningham shares his input with us. thank you John. What you say may not effect me that much but at least you are fulfilling what you said you would do. I mean–no biggie if you don’t want to!!!

Sacto Valley to the Grasslands 01-21-2010 12:59

The birds are all south of I-80 as of today. Hunting was fantastic in the north Sacto Valley on Tues and dismal yesterday. As always, when winds hit 40+ in the north the birds head to the Yolo Basin and south to the grasslands. They won’t return north to their bread basket for 2-5 days depending on whether the north gets some strong NW winds. They will return however when they get hungry enough.

(for Sat-Mon)

The east wind and the kiss of death! That was the weekend story.

Dead calm on Sat and w/ the clear overnite skies before the fog set in just before LST killed the action. Birds never flew AM or PM. Sun wasn’t much better and the east wind spoiled the day. Mon was a surprise bust…not totally but not what you would expect w/ 20+mph winds. And a continued east wind it was. Kinda strange as an approaching Pacific storm normally has winds from the south or southwest.

Oh yeah…when it’s Tues and back to work here comes the 30+mph winds right out of the south. Duck hunting!!!

I suggest that if some of you “more regular” guys would like to be a VFE then contact Webbie and request an app to fill out. We have 4 VFEs but only one active one so a few replacements are in order.

Spotty hunting reported Tues-Wed. My son did well at a private club near Biggs on Tues in the ripping wind but others I talked to did poorly in spite of the wind. I gotta believe yesterday was decent w/ the 10-12mph south wind.

Tough to predict what it will be this weekend. Cloudy, some rain and variable winds for Sat and rain Sun. Heavy rain forecasted for Mon-Tues. One thing is for sure…there’s a load of birds in the north valley. Only 17 days left in the season so get out and getcha some!
