Sounds like you did have a good season. It's like I keep telling these young fellows around here. It's not the amount of ducks ,it's all about the hunt. Heading to Missouri the 19th and 20th to do some snow goose hunting. Called the guide tonight and he said the geese are stacking up. Should be a great hunt. Also, I got to take my 7-yr.old nephew the last day and, although he didn't get a duck, I did manage onw woodie out of 5, and he claimed it as "his first duck", which, I guess, is correct in one sense. Took him with me to the taxidermist and let him pick the mount for "his" duck and the one that was my pup's first as well. Both mounts will be his, by the way. Tell you something else, I had been told this "new guy" taxidermist was SUPER and, after seeing his work, I must agree. His name is Brad Henry and he is near Parrott, Ga. about 55 miles S. of Columbus. The young guy really takes pride in his work. Anyway, I hope to do better next year, and if things go as I hope, will have a small duck pond on my place before next season. Enjoyed your reports and your help. Just keep cleaning and stuffing them in the freezer. I know it's not high. Had a major family situation twice in January that cut into about 2 weeks of hunting. For me to miss more than 2 days in a row is very rare. I usually hunt 4-5-6 days in a row. Did manage to collect a can and a pair of buffies for the wall. Also shot a very colored out drake ringneck that I think I might get mounted. All in all it wasn't a great season for me. I killed 5 geese and about 4 dozen ducks. I shot the impoundments less this year because of all the skybusters showing up. Just frustated me. They can't call, don't know when to call and when not to and place out decoys only to shoot at birds 100 yards + high. Saw very few teal this year after the hurricane. Shot none. Gadwall got all the birds this year. Wigeon sounds like he had a respectable season also. How'd you do Charlie? The best hunting I had all year was when I went to the bays down in Fla. Birds by the hundreds but no hunters. Except for the few that went with me. Bluebills, Greater Scaup, Scoters, Merganzers, Bufflehead and Redheads were on the plate those days. Hope to get in a snow goose hunt during the conservation order in some state before the season goes out. Maybe that will make up for the season some. Me and my buds made it thru the season again without any major catostrophies. Thank the Good Lord for that. Almost time to dust off the big boat at the beach and get ready for saltwater fishing. Posted By: CFGadwall Guest Mobile Bay & Delta 02-01-2005 08:43 - - - The last two weeks of the season were a roller-coaster ride. From the 20th-23rd, we were covered up with big divers. We killed more greater scaup, redheads and canvasbacks in those 4 days that we killed in the previous 4 weeks. Limits were easy & I even killed a 3,2,1 (3 greaters, 2 redheads & 1 can) on the 23rd. We also had a good number of gadwalls thrown in. The last 4 days of the season were poor. The big divers seemed to dissapear and while we had lots of gadwalls, they were very blindshy. We hunted all day the 27th & 28th and only had a few gadwalls and a Canada goose to show for it. Saturday was better, with 14 birds (13 gadwalls and 1 drake bluewing) taken by three of us. Sunday was a bust with only 2 gadwalls in the bag. This turned out to be a strange year, especially for divers. From about the 15th through the 24th we were covered up with greater scaup, redheads and canvasbacks. Out of the 16 bluebills I killed this year, 12 were greater scaup. We did find a large raft of lessers & hunted them on the 22nd. This weekend, we went back to where they were and most were gone (or at least we couldn't find them). I killed more canvasbacks this years than I killed in the '97-98 thru 2003-04 seasons combined. Twice this year, I had a flock 8-10 cans come into the decoys. Redheads were almost the same case, until this last weekend, it was pretty much a given that if you hunted the bay, you were going to kill at least one redhead. However, this past week, most of the cans, redheads and bluebills that had been here seemed to vanish. Maybe they went to Miss. Sound? We saw a good number of gadwalls as the season progressed but they were very hard to hunt this year. Even when it appeared we had new birds, they seemed to arrive blind shy. We saw no teal until this weekend when I killed a beautiful bluewing. No one in our group saw or killed a pintail. We killed a good number of wigeon early & they disappeared. The ringnecks that were here at the beginning of the season disappeared right after New Years. I suspect that went up into the creeks in the Delta. Oh well, lets hope the breeding grounds get lots of rain & snow this winter and that next year will be better. Hunted hard all day yesterday and maybe saw 30 birds and the day before hunted till 1000 and did not see anything. WE had 6 redheads pass throught on Saturday and one of the four guns got off a shot and bagged one nice drake. Birds just do not move off the refuge and private places around Crow Creek when it gets cold. Big waste time unless you like to freeze and watch seaguls migrate down the river. Did not hear any shooting and most of the setups left by 1000 and it was so bad the evening setups left after a couple of hours. Maybe we need to go back to a 30 day and 3 bag limit to get the pressure off the birds and get the numbers up. If DU, Delta and USFWS along with MS Flyway Council contuine to do nothing then it can only get worse in future years. Duck hunting is a multi billion dollar business. Let us protect the resource for a few years and see if we can make a difference in the quality of our hunts. Sure am glad we got the extra week to hunt this year for I'm looking forward of viewing more blue skys and seaguls on the route. Be Safe RAM Posted By: wigeon55 Guest Guntersville 01-23-2005 17:11 - - - I hunted Guntersville for the first time...what a experience...I have seen decoy shy birds but wow...Ater watching thousand of coots.bluebills and gadwalls raft up of the shore line..i was thinking why and then i saw the light SKYBUSTING...Boys ya'll are educating your ducks by busting them up in the air let them decoy and then shoot....Even the grebes where to scared to swim into the decoys...i watched gadwalls land just out of range like they knew they are safe....Let the birds work the decoys when they get into a range that you can kill them shoot....ducks are not stupid just hunters.....

Today was Merganser day. saw a lot of red breasted mergansers up and down the river fishing for smolts along with the Bald Eagles, seagulls and an occassional mallard and a few remaining cinnamon teal(???) heading for the seacoast in the morning hoping to see the sea ducks. Unable to get to the Trumpeter Swan refuge. Ducks should be starting to move in the next two weeks.

New report by WFC. Sandhill Cranes are gathering up by Fairbanks along with some geese. I have seen pintails, Scaup and some mallards grouping together in tha last week. Will be spending the next two days around Kenai looking for the sea ducks. First WFC staff member to go to Alaska to see what the birds look like as they get set up for the migration. I love this place. So far its been only Ptarmigan and fishing but its amazing where ducks pop up. Going across the Denali Highway, every now and then there would be some birds in the kettle lakes and I saw Pintails (???) and mergansers on the Klutena river and a LOT of Bald Eagles fishing and probably hunting ducks. Nee some postings from local hunters here.

It has been a cold start to fall and way to early to see the geese flying in the interior. Went out for the grouse opener and saw lots of geese getting ready to head out. they are about two weeks early. I havent seen this many geese this early ever. Not a good sign still 16 days til the waterfowl opener and all of the specks will be gone.

Kodiak Island area 01-21-2007 15:52

My second trip to Kodiak was outstanding once again! My goal was to bag some more Harley’s, Old Squaws, and common Goldeneyes, and especially focus on getting a Barrows, White winged Scoter, and get a Red Breasted Merganser. I was able to be successful in attaining all of these mounter drakes. Even took some mallards,common mergansers, bufflehead, a black scoter, and bluebills.

The beauty of Kodiak island and its wildlife is incredible! We saw seals, sea otters, sea lions, blacktailed deer, and of course eagles. A special thanks to Matt from this forum as the areas he mentioned were productive.

We tried drifting in on the Pacific’s and unless you can shoot about 100 yards out, forget it. Guys in our party even saw a pair of King’s, but our attempt to locate them the next day proved futile.

Another Alaskan adventure was well enjoyed! What an awesome way to conclude a fantastic waterfowl season!

I wish I could help more on the eiders, but I haven’t realy seen any or haven’t been looking (I need to get the boat out bad), except a Steller’s off Cliff Point a month ago, so careful. I assume you are looking for Kings, I’ll keep an eye out, scan the rock piles/cliffs and such. There seem to have been a lot of the Barrows in Anton Larson prior to ice up, but there are a few hanging in Old Womans bay, mixed in with the Bluebills and Emperors. I also don’t know how to PM. Good luck and safe boating and safe flying.

Lots of ice in the back bays, but as long as the boat can be launched, should be no problems around the rock piles and in the open (watch your Ice-up and stability). I’m actually still kicking around the rivers (whats still open…not much). Have been wanting to go out sea duck’n, but…, hopfully soon (season is quickly coming to a close). I’ve seen a bunch of Black scoter out towards Middle and Kalsin Bay, a few Skunk-heads out Pasagshak way. Old Womans full of the sounds of OldSquaw. Harleys, Goldens and Butterballs in OW also and Bluebills are thick in there stil too. Seen very few Eiders, but haven’t really been looking in the right places. I was over in Anton Larsen two weeks ago, and it was pretty much frozzen then, and we havn’t seen over 30deg since. Pudlers aren’t moving much in this cold, but that dosen’t usually effect the Eiders and Scoter. Are you targeting a location or a specific breed? Good luck!

But, since its getting colder, I’ll probably be heading out of the bays shortly (Malards are still in the rivers) Ice is building. Are you going to be in Kodiak, Port lions or somewhere else?

Prince William Sound 12-13-2006 12:07
Cloudy, Snow & Rain Mix – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
A friend and I just returned from a great guided hunt in the Prince William Sound from 12/8-12/11. The weather varied from light to moderate rainfall on Friday to light rain and snowfall on Saturday to heavy fog on Sunday to colder and clear skies with ice on Monday.

Not surprisingly, the two best hunting days were Saturday and Monday when visibility was good to excellent. Friday, the birds were hardly moving at all and we ended up with only a single drake bufflehead and drake barrows goldeneye, and four very wet sets of clothing including the two guides.

Saturday, we passed on several bufflehead opportunities and shot twelve barrows with eight being beautiful drakes. We saw harlequins and old squaws on two occasions but none that came closer than 50 yards from our decoys.

On Sunday, fog rolled in with heavy wet snowflakes as big as half-dollars. Needless to say, the ducks were not moving much, however, I was able to shoot a beautiful drake harlequin that day-my first ever!

Monday, the temps dropped considerably overnight with a high pressure system moving in to clear up the skies. Ice formed heavily in the marina with huge sheets of ice forming in the bays. I knew that hunting would be much better and it was. We took a full limit of barrows on Monday with two more harlequins. We could hardly keep the goldies out of the decoys and soon had several flocks land and swim in the decoys. We saw some surf and white-winged scoters, however, none that were using our area.

Overall, it was a great hunt and the scenery was absolutely fantastic. A great hunting trip to be sure!

I am from Virginia and grew up waterfowl hunting and spend 10 days in Saskatchewan every year chasing ducks and geese. I have never been to Alaska and would love to hunt while I am there. Been out a few times this year, and for the most part I have seen a real good population of local geese, with all the water sources around Delta I can’t get a good feel for the duck population as they are spread out.

Only can imagine what the hunting is like down there. Have heard the south east AK is fantastic. Been trying to get to Cordova for a hunt but never seem to.
Not many hardcore waterfowlers in AK, I don’t see many hunters in my area past the 2nd or 3rd week of Sept.

I grew up in SD so dry goose hunting and duck hunting is mostly what I have done but have always thought it would be cool to do the sea duck thing.

Hi Ric, I would say we have a good number of birds down here. Being from alabama it’s seems like alot to me. Were lucky to see a mallard down there. Of course there are plenty of sea ducks but they don’t taste all that great. We shot a few geese this year while hunting ducks. The thing that impresses me most of all is how well the birds decoy here. Due to a lack of hunting pressure I’m sure. I have not met one “serious” duck hunter here, but that’s not a complaint. It is good to hear from other hunters though, and I would appreciate any feedback you guy’s have.

I am new to the forum, and pretty new to alaska. I’ve lived in ketchikan for a few years. I am originally from Alabama so the duck hunting here is outstanding to me. We shoot on average 3-6 mallards a hunt in the saltchucks, and a pretty good mixed bag of sea ducks, mainly surfs, white-wing scoters, and goldeneye. We try not to mess with the harlequins to much. Lately we have been seeing alot of scoters now that springs back. Four and a half months can’t wait.

Well it has been a very long winter but I saw on the front head lines of the FBKS News Miner that the GEESE ARE HERE IN DELTA!!!!!!!!
It’s almost a religious experience for me, signals the end of the winter and towards the greatest time of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey wyomingducknut, I saw your post by accident when I clicked on AK instead of AL. I used to live in Jackson and hunted two seasons over there. Since I don’t live there anymore I don’t mind spillen’ a few beans. We had consistent shooting throughout the first 2/3 of the season below the refuge in star valley. The best way to find the good spots is by jump shooting as you float down. There are also some small beaver ponds off the main river that can be good. If you can get permission there are some decent spots for geese and a few ponds that can be loaded at times. Also, if your up for some competition, South Park is good on opening day, but I wouldn’t mees with it after. The Salt near Pinedale always has a few birds and there is some public access behind the airport. Your best bet can be some of the slow waters and lakes in Idaho. Do some summer scouting for some of those spots & look for the mud, marsh and beaverdams. The season after I moved, my hunting buddy was killing daily limits on public land over there. I hope this helps.

I live about an hour south of Jackson Hole. The geese and duck hunting down here was good still new trying to find the areas I new about in Alaska. If contracts pick back up on base than I am sure I will be back but its nice to be back in the states again. Take care and tell everyone hello.

I moved down to wyoming after our contract came to end on base. Duck hunting was so so being new to the area but I am sure it will be better next year. Still seeing ducks in the area here and can hunt thru mind Jan.

Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
Got after it again today picked up a drake mallard and Bomber sniffed out a hen mallard that was wounded and lying under an ice ledge up against the bank.
It hadn’t been shot, and seemed to be in good shape, no broken wings or feet it just couldn’t fly.
I tried to release it and it could motor across the water but couldn’t get up, so Bomber retrieved it again and I decided to ring it’s neck.
Back to work tomarrow off next wed so I’ll hit it hard for the last three days….

Well only a week left in the 05 season.
And with the mercury hovering around -40 since Thanksgiving wasn’t sure if I was going to get back out.
Not ready for the season to end so this warm up was a big relief.
Went out Wed and had a great shoot.
Shot three single drakes and let about 50 pass on by. Real good in your face hunt.
Hoping to get back out today, it’s very windy like 40-50 mph gusts so not sure if I want to head out. Hands down the best ducking of the year in Delta is Nov and Dec it just blows me away the amount of Mallards that winter here.

Headed back out tomarrow.
We typically hold some mallards up here but this year has been really great.

GOT OUT LAST WEEK, NEEDED AN ICE CUTTER! MY FLAT BOTTOM BOAT HAD PROBLEM BREAKING ICE SO WE PUT A MOTORIZE CANOE IN FRT. AND IT BROKE ICE BETTER, STILL HAD TO SKIP OVER ICE AND WATER FOR 7 MILES. (THAT’S WHY THEY CALL USE QUICK HEADS!!) GOT TO SET DEEKS AND DO SOME HUNTING, MOST OF THE BIRDS HAVE LEFT, GOT ONE MALLARD.

Hey not sure if you have ever tried it before but with these last mallards I used a duck brine you can find a million recipes online for them and it worked great. This particular recipe said it could make a mergy taste like prime rib. Well being a south dakota boy that sounded good to me, it was good but it wasn’t prime rib…

Had a nice little mallard hunt today, been scouting a little hole this last week so this morning when I got off work I hunted it. Ended up with two nice drakes, must have been fifty more couldn’t keep them out of this hole but these late season mallards tend to taste a little fishy so I only shot two hoping to make them taste better than past recipes and not wanting to shoot up about the only good hole left that I know of.

Back from Sask, had a great time lots of carnage and am I am spoiled. Went out scouting a couple times this week, nothing but empty skies. Seen some mallards, the T-river is ice choked so I can’t get to my mallard holes.
Most of the mallards I saw were susies, usually they migrate first before the drakes so I’m not sure if the big northern birds are still holding to the north or what is going on.

This is my first time on here. Hunted Sat, no ducks, hunt the salt off of knik out past the ponds. Usually lots of ducks here by now but none this year, very poor. Hardly anything flying. Only good sign was frost on the ground all morning, hope it freezes inland and drives some ducks to us.

Hey guys, New to AK and my passion is with Waterfowl. I have scouted out both areas listed above and both hold lots of water. Was successful last weekend with a few on the lake down rabbit slough. Seems this area gets lots of preasure. But needed to keep the birds moving. Scouting is key it seems. I hear the birds are now just getting here and the season for them is pretty short due to lockups coming. Im looking for information on hunting waterfowl in the area, or someone to give me some ideas. I got all items, Tons of decoys both ducks and geese, Dog, boat and will travel. What is the scoop on the geese? I heard something about Coffee Point, But seems like a difficult ride due to tides etc. Are there any other options for hunting geese here in Alaska?

Well were still having pretty good weather up here still. Been seeing some cranes still hanging around so I imagine the geese are still here.
Headed to Wynyard Sask on Wed for 12 days of goose slaughtering and some band collecting. Good luck to anyone still hunting.

Well what a difference a day makes, yesterday I limited out on geese in no more than 15 minutes. Today heavy winds and snow and we only managed a loner. Geese still around got some new cranes in today, plus seen probably 100 swans between clearwater and the T River.
Gonna break out the duck decoys tomarrow and see what happens.

Haven’t had much time to get on here lately. Last week was pretty slow not much for geese. New birds moved in on Wed but I went to Ketchikan(sp) and am not sure whats left around.
Have a possibility of some weather moving in today/tonight so I’ll be out tomarrow seeing if we have some new birds.

Well, haven’t posted in a bit…opener was good. Lots of dumb brown ducks!!! And believe it or not Cranes and Geese like there haven’t been around in 3-4 years. Hunted again midweek last week and the hunting was good again with several large flocks of cranes and geese around. Ric…I’ll let you know when my partner and I are headed your way later this month or early next.

Well the last two days may be the toughest yet. Hunted hard with three geese to show for it. No new birds yet just locals and not many of them.
The swans and cranes started to arrive over the last 6 hours, so hopefully the Canadas aren’t far behind.
Seen probably 200 Specks pushing south today, they were high when they passed me so I assume they grouped up somwhere north or west.
Starting to see a fair # of quack quacks.
It’s still early and am just buying my time till the whitching hour arrives.
Have to go to Houston tomarrow, be back at noon on Sat will try the afternoon and see what that brings.

HUNTED FOR THREE DAYS ONLY HAD THREE SETS OF BIRDS COME IN ON OUR SET HAS A MATTER OF FACT ONLY HAD THREE SETS OF BIRDS COMING CLOSE TO THE FIELD! WE SEEN A LOT OF BIRDS ARRIVING AROUND 9: 30 AND FLYING HIGH AND KEEP FLYING SOUTH.
TALK TO MY BUDDIES, THEY HUNTED FIELDS RECENTLY CUT AND
SAW FEW BIRDS IN FIELDS. SOME OF THE GUYS LEFT AND DID NOT STAY TO HUNT AFTER SCOUTING. I WONDER WERE ALL THE LOCAL BIRDS HAVE GONE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS.

Haven’t really gotten going yet, hunted one day for geese. Have talked to a few guys with no real positives yet. It’s real early though and there are alot of birds still to the north and west.

Well here we go guys, a day and a wake up.. Hope everybody has there mid season gear pulled out, calling for a possibility of snow and cool temps for the wknd. Been at work since sun, usually see birds moving over head but nothing new has moved through in the last few days.
Let’s hear how everyone does when you get a chance to post. I’ll probably post again on sun when I get back to work.

Was out yesterday for the first time to take advantage of the subsistence hunting and seen probably 300 gesse. I don’t like to shoot in to the big flocks, especially this early in the year as it tends to push them out.
I had a lone speck and a pair of Canadas come in so it was a nice day.
Skybust not much for ducks right now but that is pretty typical. We have so much water you really have to do alot of scouting. They should start forming up in the clearwater shortly. Hope everybody has a good opener and be safe. Taiga let me know if you head down this way. later

Starting to see cranes and geese move in none of the fields are harvested yet, but it shouldn’t be long it has been pretty dry up here and most of all the grain is headed out and brown down about 6″ from the ground.

Amen to that shines, the geese were here in the interior in decent numbers but they pushed through late and fast, mostly hunted locals until the end of the third week of Sept

Killed a lot of Pintails this past year. Saw a lot of Mallards.
This summer we are seeing hundreds of Canadian Geese. I hope they are going to stick around for this coming season.

Osamamo, well congrats on the move. If you are any kind of an outdoorsmen then AK is the place for you.
Eileson AFB is about 77 miles to the north of me just outside of North Pole.
A friend of mine just PCS from there to Minot and he always had good luck hunting on or around base.
The big game hunting is allright, and so is waterfowling, the biggest thing with waterfowling is the effort in scouting it takes, and the season for the most part is pretty short. The geese usually push through in three weeks and then your pretty much stuck hunting ducks.
The weather isn’t to bad, -50 -60 is common or it used to be, were having another warm winter. All in all AK is a great place to live you just have to be an active person.
The darkness effects each person differently, my wife and I it dosen’t bother us but other people it does, you wont know until you get here.
Well hopefully this helps you out some.

I found out today my wife and i are moving to AK. She’s in the Air Force and we just moved to AR from Idaho. we move in September of 05. She’s stationed in Eilson (sp) by Fairbanks. I was wondering what the waterfowling is like up there, what the weather is like, and what big game hunting is like. I was raised in Idaho, so I am used to being mildly cold in comparison to y’all but i dont know what dark winters and light summers would be like. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

Been hitting my late season hole here of late and have been doing pretty well. Usually pull out 3 or 4 nice big fat northern mallards each time I go.
The area is so concentrated with ducks in such a small area that they are very wary so I limit myself to 1 -2 times out a week but a little duck hunting is better than none.

Hunted in the blowing snow, got seven mallards and one drake gadwall. The water was low and freezing slush, had about 3 inches of snow on the ground so I wore my white outs over my camouflage gear, had birds almost landing on me.

AKDUSE, glad you have gotten to do a little hunting. It is always our pleasure to have you up here. Are you ready to go to Cordova?????
Hit the Clearwater River today, the dog had been driving me nuts. It was snowing and blowing real hard out of the west.
Lots of mergies probably had 30 mergies drop into the dekes, only seen one hen mallard.
Watched the mergies drop in for 30 min and poor Bomber couldn’t take it anymore so I dropped one for him. He chased that thing for 5 minutes and was ice from head to toe as soon as he got out of the water. After the ice and snow accumulated on him I started to feel sorry for him so we limited the hunt to a hour and a half.

Sorry Ric, been so busy with work after my trip to Delta that I haven’t had a whole lot of time to be on this.
As for hunting been out a few times with a bird here and there and was out this past weekend with Skybust and we did manage to pick up 2 green and 1 hen. Went out on Sunday and got 3 green and 2 hens. The hen was the biggest hen I’ve shot in Ak since leaving ND. She must have been 5/6 lbs.
It is trying to freeze up some sloughs but hope to get out this next weekend and should be caught up with work to be able to hunt quite a bit next week.
Hey I have to let you know how much I enjoyed my time hunting with you and the great hospitality you and the wife provided.
