Warmer weather and south winds have put the Snow goose migration into high gear. Reports of huge flights of light geese up and on the move poured in this week from the mid-tier states of both the Mississippi and Central Flyways.

Springlike weather has the return migration in full swing for the heartlands of the Central and Mississippi Flyways. Warmer weather over the past few days has the geese on the move and hunters from northern Missouri to South Dakota are seeing snow on the ground replaced by Snow Geese in the sky.

A slight warming trend has the light geese on the move, and a cold front rolling south should stack the birds up in the mid-tier states. Winter does not yet appear to be ready to release its hold on the U.S., but as its grip loosens, the snow geese are heading north at last.

Youth hunts over the past weekend saw many new hunters in the field and a lot of new ducks there to greet them. Special youth hunts in many southern states turned out to be some of the best duck action of the season. Across the nation dedicated waterfowlers did their part to ensure the future of their shared passion by introducing young men and women to the world of waterfowl and waterfowling.

Before beginning this week’s migration report, all of us at Waterfowler.com would like to once again express our deepest condolences to the family of Adam Miller, Waterfowler.com member and VFE for the state of Pennsylvania, and to the families of William Nurmi and Michael Jones. The three companions were lost in a boating accident while hunting the Chesapeake Bay. Adam’s fellow Pennsylvania VFE’s have established a memorial fund which will be divided equally amongst the families of all three victims.
