FYI on November 2 we shot a very nice whitetail near Hawk Springs, the deer appeared very healthy and fat but tested positive for CWD. As I understand it this is the first case in this area.

Decided to hit Packer this morning and i wasnt the only one, got there fairly early and one group already set up another sittin there waitin and us, then 5 more vehicles come in 2 stayed and hunted the west lake and the rest left. There was a good number of ducks around of all species, we ended up with 9 between 3 of us should of had a limit but missed a few and 3 sets on the east lake is a bit much, talked to 2 groups of friends that hunted table and they all shot 3 man limits with one group takin mostly mallards. Alot more geese than the weeks before, i would say 200 or so on packer this morning and several groups of little guys comin from the river or morrill which was good to see, table guys said they saw decent numbers also, so there here get out and get em!

Had a good morning and ended up with our two man limit of ducks and one goose. Always good when you can manage to nock a goose down in the area we were hunting. The are some new birds in the are and the North wind are sure to push some more in with this weather front. It is snowing a little now and should be fun in the morning.

Went out this weekend and ended up with a two man limit both days in a short amount of time. Not a whole lot of birds around but the ones that were there did work well. Shot some nice mallards and widgon on the first day and mostly Divers on the second. Two different ponds. Some small amounts of geese both days and had a shot on a single the first day but we had been picking up the duck decoys and when I went to shoot the SBE I just got a click. I hate when those guns do that. Only down fall in a SBE that I have found. I hope to see a new push of birds in the next couple of weeks. If not the hunting is going to get hard.

Went out opening day had luck many ducks got 3 Wigeons all drakes not much color some, Hen Shoveler, tow Blue wing. Went back out Wen. Got 3 more Wigeons one full color very beautiful all drakes one Blue wing one Green wing. The drainage pond opening day was dry as a bone just a stream, on Wen. almost full so hopefully some other ponds will get the water and maybe save what hunting season we may have. Wen. checked Hawksprings Res. way down water was about 100 yards from boat dock. Where I was catching fish this year in 14 foot of water is now the the sore line of water.

Went out this morning by my self and managed to get four ducks. Ducks really did not want to decoy. Ended up shooting all four ducks across the river, over no decoys, from were I was set up. Saw some geese working some feilds just off the river. I would say about 150. When they left the feild they flew high out toward Alcova. They must have been roosted on the river that morning because I did not see them until they were working the field. I did see a few small bunches of geese as well. They had other plans. I did see some ok numbers of ducks for it being early in the year and rather warm.

Decided to try it this morning with not alot of expectations, headed to table like i thought a lot of people would, we were the 3rd ones there at 4am, headed to pond 8 which doesnt have much water in it like everything else and decided to drag all our crap all the way out there, finally get there through all the mud and get set up. Have ducks landin all morning in the dark, rite at shootin lite we have a drake mallard come in and we nail him, then we decoy 15 mallards and kill 3 while pickin them up a nice flock of gadwalls come in we kill 3 of them and rite behind them 6 teal come in and we finish our 2 man limit on the blue wings! Grand total of 10 min of huntin an 2 hours of settin up! Oh well it was a good problem to have, we stuck it out for another hour waitin for geese only saw 1 flock and they landed on the creek north of us, not alot of birds we just made good on the ones that came out way. Drove by Packer when we were done thinkin it would be packed but only one barge and one group both on the west lake? Good luck this season everyone!

Drove around Goshen today and it is NOT good, better plan on havin a honey hole cause all the public is horrible! If we dont get alot of rain fast were gonna be screwed the north lake at Springer is bone dry and so is pond 1 at table, G&F did tell me today as soon as 1 farmer is done irragating they will be putting all the water available into pond 1 lets just hope that happens before the first big push of birds gets here. Hawk Springs is really low but should have enough water to keep some birds here there was about 100 or so geese out there that i could see.

Drove around Goshen today and the water situation is FREAKIN HORRIBLE! Table is bad bad bad there is just a tiny puddle out on 1 the slough has a little water in the far north end and pond 2 is the only one with any water what so ever but really full of weeds, Paker is full but no birds on it. Horse creek up north by huntly and Lyman is flowing like a river, wonder where its all going we could sure use it, its almost runnin over its bank? Wheat strips out west of yoder are completly dry even the small pond in the trees, of course bump is dry and looks like a small forrest and all the little pot holes by the bird farm are dry also, didnt make it to the res but sure its not in good shape, not lookin good up here looks like i made a good choice by gettin in on a pit in colo. Pray for lots of rain, on a good note doves everywhere and the deer looked good.

thanks for the info, and I will be talking with the G&F commissioner from Goshen county. Did they leave the hunting hours alone – or did they mess with that too? There was also a push by the same people to end all hunting at 1:00 PM, and for people that have kids in sports, school events, etc. – sometimes an afternoon hunt is all you get. It really concerns me that a small group can have so much influence on OUR season. Guess the old saying is true, “it’s not what you know, but who you know”.

Yes it will take effect this coming season. The reasons started out being the population figures but in the end it was just the desire of one local game commisioner that lives in Goshen. I am sure the guides were in favor of lowering the limit it makes it easier to fill out clients with a limit of three vs five.

Well we delivered the petition with approx.400 names to Wyoming Game&Fish and tried to get them to reconsider the limit change from 5 to 3, but bottom line they decided to try it out for one year. We need to stay on top of this and make sure we attend nexts years meeting in force if we are going to change any minds.

We have signatures from both Wyoming and Colorado residents who hunt in Wyoming. I live part time in Wyoming and Colorado.I own a home in Wyoming and a business in Cody called Core Mountain Sports. John Rinehart from Cheyenne was the primary force behind this petition and the majority of the signatures are from Wyoming but frankly it should not matter, we are all sportsmen and Wyoming Game and Fish can not ignore 200 signatures.

that is great about the number of signatures for the petition. However when I look at the web petition, I only see 24 signatures. Where did you get the other signatures. Hopefully alot of the signatures where hunters from Wyoming….. I think that is important. Thanks for setting this up, I guess we’ll see what happens. If you care that G&F backdoored the recent limit change on dark geese from 5 to 3 please take the time to go on line and sign this petition. All you have to do is fill out the petition and hit send! We are mounting a campaign against G&F for taking the emergency action without proper public imput and notification. I will be sending you more informaton the next week, so get your hunting buddies notified and prepared to fight the 3 goose ruling. An emergency, huh??? I wish someone would look at the real emergency of the water situation, that is why Goshen county doesn’t hold birds like it used to, that and darn mild winters in Montana. Lets hope for a wet spring and summer, or were screwed again.

I’ve been told that the measure passed because it was backed doored in has a emergency regulation. What that apparently means is that it can’t be changed at the July meeting. Nothing else apparently has changed. Thank your Game and fish commissioners. Info is pretty reliable

RHuskey,
Where did you get the info that this passed? I been looking at the G&F website daily to see to what happened, and didn’t find anything. Did the length of season or days to hunt all day remain the same? Usually the decisions on season regulatons aren’t done until August. I guess if this passed, so be it. Maybe they decided we should get in line with both Nebraska and Colorado, who also have 3 bird limits. thanks for the update.

Yogibear
I spoke last evening with the Wyoming Game and Fish commisioner and he told me the following. Their will be a meeting held in Casper next Tuesday and Wednesday and 7 people will vote on this issue. I am told that part of the meeting will be open for public comment but I do not have the specifics. The problem as they see it is as follows, lack of habitat ( no water in Bump,Springer and Table) Winters that have been warmer that keep the Geeses up in Montana and the Yellowstone drainage. Lower populations in our flyway which range from 197,000 to 217,000. Increased number of hunters especially on the river from Lingle to Henry they estimate there is over 400 pits and the geese simply have no place to rest with this sort of hunting pressure. The pits are located on private land so G&F have no control over this issue. The average hunter last season took 1.4 geese per each day of hunting but as we all know this was a weather issue. Most of our geese last season went to Northern Colorado and Western Nebraska where hunters had their best season in years. From what I have been able to find out the G&F will most likely not make any changes for next season or if they do it will be lowering the limit from 5 to 3 ( but this is a vote so anything can happen) If they do not make any changes I think we can count on changes being made in the 2008-2009 season. As for the water issue you mentioned, I also brought up that issue and G&F do not own any water rights, in fact the commisioner stated Horse Creek irragation will once again pull down Hawk Springs again this summer as they did last summer when they killed all the fish.

mulket,
From what I know (and I don’t know alot admittedly) it seems like the people in favor of lowering the limit and shutting off hunting earlier are either a few guides or hunters that can hunt everyday if they want. It doesn’t appear the “average Joe” working man hunter has much to do with what a few people are trying to push through in Goshen county. I do know from personal experience that the G&F will listen to everyone’ concerns. This is a MAJOR issue that could impact all hunters in our flyway in Wyoming.
I do agree with the concern expressed by these people that our hunting has suffered greatly the past few seasons, but can’t this be related to birds hanging up north and the horrible water situation in Goshen County, and Wyoming in general. I know I have waterfowl friends in other states that can not believe hunting hours are so restrictive in Goshen county. I don’t know for sure what the answers are, but I sure wish we could get G&F to take an aggressive look at water issues at Table, Springer, Bump, etc. Take care.

Glaubgoose WOW it is scary that you really believe this? Perhaps if you know and see offenders you should post more than the county and color of vehicle? Does anyone out there really beleive that 18 hunters voted for the reduced limit and half days? It sounds more like the ANTI’s than hunters. Several years ago their was a small contigent of hunters from the Yoder area that pushed the half day we have now and the majority very seldom hunted. The real reason has not been uncovered yet!

About the goose limit maybe brought down to 3 geese a day and end shooting at 1:00 pm I say let them because there are some hunter out there that did it to us all. I have been in touch with G$F and because of these people I have in the past told you about hunting past hours and hunting out of other peoples decoys, I told you all this would happen if we did not do anything about it. I told you all this back in Decmember. The G$F are trying to stop the pouching that some people are doing, and this is one way to do it. Now because of these people like a few I seen from Torrington and I am not saying it is anyone here I do not know but because of these people, aoll you need to turn these people in because they just screwed it up for all us. The goose populations are up and it really does not need the limit brought down. But I can say I told you so now, you might think I was just a made hunter and complaining about things in the past. I was jjust trying to protect our hunting rights and priveledges. But no one would stand by me. I also say wait till they end the seasons sooner also. One man I know lives near Table Mountain and goes every day, is one of these pass shooters and pouchers, he owns a silver Toyota PU and has a brown and white dog, anouther person has a Green Chevy PU that has a #7 lic. plate and yet another is a man in a silver to grayish Ford Excersion Plate starts with a 7 and many more. Here is just three people you can thank if you are up set about limits going down. Now maybe next year of anyone sees anyone pouching turn them in and stop from our rights being taken away, because the limits and shooting hours are rights given to us, and can be taken away.

I don’t think there will be another meeting, there usually is only one meeting each spring to discuss upcoming regulations. I think you might be surprised about how successful writing the G&F is, I’ve had very good luck writing my concerns, they do read what you write and they do listen. I will keep my eyes open for another meeting, but this would not be normal protocal from them to have another meeting to discuss this.

Don’t know if writing Game and Fish does any good. Need to attend their next meeting and fill the room. If anyone knows when that may be please post it. Does anyone know the hunters or what outfitter is causing the problems, I know lots of hunters that will attend

I have written the G&F about my objections to this proposal. They want to reduce bag limit to 3 geese per day, and end all goose hunting at 1:00 PM everyday. This is the first meeting I missed in several years – and from what I hear it is a small group of hunter/guides trying to push this through. Everyone should write the G&F about your feelings on this matter.

Our you guys aware of the possibler change in goshen county from 5 geese a day to 3 geese next year. Apparently meeting was held in Torrington at the end of March which the public attented. Some disgruntled hunters wanted the goose limit cut back to 3. Rumor is they lost their leases to bigger money and our upset. Better contact Game Department to show your objection. Watch for next meeting and attend

Drove around goshen today just to check things out, only saw on large spread of deeks out and one small set. Didnt see any snow around springer but the wind was blowin and it was cloudy and really hard to see them, nothin on Paker and i did see about 500 land on Table at noon. Water levels are lookin good rite now but ya know how that goes probably all gone by Oct. Hawk is almost full and plenty of water for the boats just need the G&F to lower the dock so we dont get wet, hope there are still some eyes alive in there with the poor water conditions over the past few summers.

Went by Table yesterday, saw a whopping 2 snows on all ponds. Springer may have 1-2 thousand max. Looks like they passed us by this season?

I haven’t saw one snow goose this week. Been to Cheyenne three times this week, and didn’t see any out by Springer. I did see quite a spread set up, so I bet there must be a few around. Saw quite a few out at Table last weekend, but can’t hunt Table after the 15th, which really burns my butt. We have a Spring Conversation order in place to hammer the snows, and can’t hunt Table. I truly do not understand this. Oh well, enough venting…..

Snows are starting to come into Goshen Co. pretty good. Went to Table Mt. last night to try some pass shooting, no luck as they would come in high and look around Table, then check out. Saw hundreds this evening fly over Torrington headed north to feed. Went to find them after supper, no luck. Better get em while their here, if the weather stays this nice, they’ll be leaving soon.

I went to Table on Tue. Pond 3 was full pond 1 almost full pond 2 3/4 full deversion pond is full. Many ducks I have never seen that many Pintails ever in one place, I filled up my camera, many Mallards, some Canada geese but i have seen more at times. Just a few snows not much at all. I spent most of the day just watching the birds. Geese were all over getting ready to mate, even on land. Then before I left I went to the back of pond one to see if any snows were there to leave a report and I might have seen five though the glasses, But the duck were WOW, I hope it is like that next season. I called a friend of mine in Co. He said the snows are still down around Fort Collins, Greely and there is not a whole lot like what should be

Drove around Goshen today and wish it was still canada and duck season, Paker is still completly froze with ice fisherman on it, Table is lookin awesome with ponds 1,2,3,4 and the slough full of water and with tons of dark geese and ducks on them, only saw 5 snows on table. Drove up to the pass shootin pits and observed quite a few snows comin in from the north couldnt see much cause the wind was blowin 100mph, headed down to the resoviour and its almost full which was nice to see but to bad there probably isnt any walleys left but there were a ton of darks and ducks with a few snows and specks, alot hangin around the NE panhandle so they should be here soon going to TX pig huntin tomarrow but will be back for next weekend, good luck everyone!!

Went looking for snows today, put alot of miles on and never saw any. I heard of someone getting 6 or 7 out by Silver Tip the other day, but I really don’t think we have any major numbers here yet. When they get here in good numbers, they usually fly over torrington to feed north of town. Hopefully they start showing up this next week.

I live in Torrington and haven’t heard of any arriving yet. Hunted near Sterling, Co last weekend and saw several hundred there, so it shouldn’t be much longer. I’m gonna go take a drive and scout this weekend, will post my findings. If anyone needs any help on a hunt, I would be happy to give a hand. I don’t have any snow decoys and never hunted snows over decoys before, but would love to give it a try. I have a few spots out by Huntley I may be able to get on.

Seems like we got more geese the last few days, wouldn’t you know – season has ended and here come the geese. Got a few last Wednesday afternoon out by Yoder, they were flying pretty good in the fog, just couldn’t finish many. Time to head to Colorado to hunt there the last few weekends.

coggletree,
I live in SE Wyoming but lived in Central Wyo for 18 years. There is decent waterfowling in the Bighorn basin and around Ocean lake. didn’t really hunt alot of waterfowl when I lived there, but I do know people hunted the areas I mentioned and did well at times. Call Rocky Mountain sporting goods in Riverton, they can give you more details.

I just got word that I will be moving to Riverton some time this summer and was trying to find out if there is any good duck or goose hunting near Riverton or if not where I would have to go to find some ducks and geese. Thanks for the help.
