Not unless they just got here 12/17/07. I hunt NE Texas and it has been pathetic since the first week or two. As of this past weekend there were no migrants from the snow/ice to the north. Nor were there any in Oklahoma just to the north of E. Texas. I spent 3 days up there last weekend and scouted about 7 different places spread over a large area. There was only about 1/4 the birds we/they had in early season. And I talked to several different hunting groups in the region and everyone had the same results except for 1 person. Those 2 guys shot 9 birds. One thing that caught my eye was this morning driving to work I saw some new ducks on a pond which never holds birds unless a migration is moving through. This tells me there’s a possibility some birds just blew in the past day or 2.

Has anyone been out in north east texas the last few days. dose anyone have any field reports here. My buddys back home in ne Arkansas are telling me of big numbers of birds hitting that area. I am optomistic that a good percentage of them will come on down. The winter storms in the hartland sure look promising.

Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 45-50 Degrees
Hunting is picking up across North Texas with a good influx of new birds, including lots of mallards. I’m seeing a fair number of canvasbacks on some of my local ponds now, too.

My group’s recent bag has included mallards, woodies, greenwing teal and some spoonies that found their way down into a flooded timber hole.

There were excellent numbers of birds in the Comanche/Brownwood area late last week, but I do not know if this front has pushed them out.

The weekend was slow for us, but the cold front helped us a lot. Hunted yesterday morning (12-10) and finished with 4 limits in a little over an hour. Lots of big ducks down, 19 out of the 20 we shot were gadwall.

SCOUTED ON SUNDAY 12/2 AND FOUND THERE WERE NO DUCKS TO BE SEEN ANYWHERE. I RODE THE OPEN WATER, RUNS OFF THE LAKE, SLUES, CREEKS AND NOTHING OF ANY NUMBERS. I AM BEING TOLD THERE ARE DUCKS BEING TAKEN ON MILWOOD LAKE IN ARKANSAS ABOUT 60 MILES FROM HERE, AS WELL AS SOME IN GARLAND CITY ARKANSAS. WE CAN ONLY PRAY FOR COLD WEATHER AND A LITTLE BIT OF RAIN.

Hunted Wed and then Thanksgiving morning after the front blew through. Wed was tough and what we did see was teal and there was not a lot to shoot, got a few birds. Thanksgiving morning was fantastic, hunted alone but had teal and spoons covering me up early so I pass on them to see if big ducks would work in. I ended up at 8am with mallards, pintail, and gadwalls as all the birds decoyed perfectly into a trong north wind. It was well worth the wait and was a great Thanksgiving.

We laid the smack down on mallards, gadwalls, wigeon and teal on isolated water this morning as the front came through. Large numbers of snow geese were pouring down from the north and late in the morning we saw migratory flights of as many as 100 ducks.

The forecast I just watched calls for snow in the Panhandle over the weekend, which could push even more ducks into North Texas.

Cut ’em, guys, and y’all have a happy Thanksgiving.

Lots of birds, but not many new ones…
Majority of the limit was comprised of Gads and Widgeon…..
Hoping that cold front brought in some newbies…..
Later in the season will start getting more Reds and Cans…..
Haven’t heard too many reports from the Lubbock area….will fill you in when I talk to my outfitters…

Cloudy, High Winds – 50-60 Degrees
Snuck off and got a quick hunt in before work yesterday. I had high expectations with perfect conditions (strongs winds which provided nice decoy movement). Got all my dekes out in a nice spread and and waited until about 7. Finally, a nice flight of ringers- probabaly 50 flew right over me (out of shooting range) and didn’t even look back. A few minutes later a few teal did the same thing. These birds were obviously headed out to feed. I hung around 30 more minutes and decided to leave. I had to get back to work. Knowing that the birds that snubbed me earlier would likely be back, I begrudgingly began to pack it in. As soon as I put on my lifevest and dragged my float tube towards the decoys, a flight of about 6 or 7 ringers flew perfectly towards my spread. Drawing my gun and ineffectively getting it to my shoulder (as I had a Maywest lifevest on), I fired away. Missing completely with my high dollar heavy shot shells ($2-$4-$6).In my premarital days, I couldn’t spend my money that fast in high class strip bar. I was pissed!!!… ended the morning with 0 kills and a newly discovered hole in my waders. Just another day in the life of a masochistic duck hunter.

Saturday morning, we hunted west of Gunter about halfway between town and Lake Ray Roberts on a very small wetland. Hunting was steady if a little slow, but we had an unfortunate lack of big ducks. With one group of teal in the decoys right after legal and a few mallards very late in the morning, we occupied ourselves in the interim with shooting the ringnecks that presented themselves plentifully. We saw several large groups of snow geese passing through at high altitude throughout the morning.

Sunday we hunted the Lake Lewisville area and saw tremendous numbers of wood ducks at first light. Teal and gadwalls comprised the bulk of the flight for about half an hour after true sunrise and then the flight stopped for more than an hour, at which point the mallards made an appearance. We put a fair amount of green in the bag to go with the teal and gadwalls taken earlier in the day.

Along the way on Saturday, we spoke with another group who had shot two banded gadwalls from the same group of birds. One of the banded birds was a guy’s very first duck ever!

Checked several barometer ponds this morning to find very little besides local mallards and woodies. A token contingent of bluebills has arrived in the area over the last few days and a few wigeon are congregating with the local mallards. Overall, the last cold front proved to be a non-starter for moving in some fresh birds.

Lakes Lewisville, Grapevine and Richland Chambers are at full pool and falling very slowly, while Lavon is three feet below pool and falling a little quicker.

One more weak Pacific front will move through prior to opening day, but I’m not holding out a lot of hope that it will move enough birds into the area to change the outlook for the opener. Looks like it will be fairly average out there on Saturday, boys.

Cold weather is upon us for the remainder of the week, and cool weather is forcasted for next week. Hopefully it will push some more ducks down for the opener in two weeks.

Ended teal season with 18 birds in 5 hunts. By far my best teal season to date. Saturday we saw a good amount of pintail mainy of which paid a visit to our decoys. Most pintail I’ve seen in that public marsh in several years whether it be teal season or duck season. Hope it’s a sign of things to come.

Hunted Saturday mornin on Bob Sandlin saw very few teal unlike the weekend before when scouting. Didnt shoot a bird there. On way back mid-day saturday made a stop at Caddo and got 7 teal on a sneak attack.

Went back to Caddo Sunday mornin and got our two limits by 8:30 but not near as fast paced as the boys down south

Hunted this mornin (Tuesday) on Lake Palestine and never saw a single teal and unusually very few wood ducks.

I saw about 40 teal on one of my tanks yesterday, and i heard their were more on the lakes around the area. We should have a pretty good hunt tommorow morning. Most of my spots did’t have any birds though, so (as always) make sure plenty of scouting is done if you want to be successful

Comanche/Brownwood 09-03-2007 07:57
Cloudy, Occassional Rain Showers – Over 70 Degrees
We hunted over shredded sunflowers and harvested milo in the Comanche/Brownwood area Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The evening flight on Saturday was much stronger than the Sunday morning flight, thought neither flight was anything to write home about. My group managed 12 bird limits and near-limits for the evening hunt, and small handfuls of birds in the morning.

Reports from Vernon, Graham and Breckenridge were uniformly fair. Everyone had birds, but they were scattered all over the place and limits were more a product of exceptional shooting than enormous numbers of birds. Habitat across North and West Texas is in excellent condition and the birds we killed were so full of sunflower seeds it was a wonder they could fly.

There are a couple of guns hunting a tank about a quarter mile from where I am, inside the city limits of The Colony, and even those guys banging away at fat, stupid city birds aren’t going through a lot of shells.

Forecast for the next couple of days calls for rain. Lake Lewisville is 3.5 feet above conservation pool and Ray Roberts is about 3 feet high, while Lavon is right at conservation pool.

Well, saw a group of blue-wing teal while I was out fishing today. There was about 15 of them and they were flying fairly high over the marsh. I’m thinking it’s a group that probably stayed south for the summer, but it still gets the blood going just seeing the little buggers. Come on teal season.

Lakes in East Texas are filling up as well. Not as much rain like dallas and houston but just what we need. Toledo Bend is full and should still be climbing with this rain. Lake O’ the Pines, Caddo, and Palestine all up a substantial bit from summer ’06 which all lakes in eastern portion should be. Hopefully will a good sign for upcoming teal and duck season

This has been a weird summer so far. I’ve been interning with the local WMA this summer, and we’re still seeing a fair number of BWT, a few spoonies, couple gadwall, and even 3 scaup as well. What’s even more strange is that the federal biologist at McFaddin NWR saw a brood of shovlers a couple weeks ago, and we saw a brood of scaup yesterday. Conditions are good down here right now, but I can’t even begin to figure out why those birds stayed here and actually some of them nested.

Very happy to have ducks join my partner and I for the last go-round of the season. They didn’t fly long by they did fly which was a vast improvement over the last couple of trips. I came up one shy of a limit but had a lot of fun getting my 3 gads and one mallard. Hunted a new spot for me, just into India Creek, which will be on the short-list for next season. Looked good for early spring bass fishing, too, so if you’re into that, give it a try.

Choke is plum full of birds with little pressure from what I hear. Up near the 99 bridge, down around Opossum Creak and all inbetween is Gads and BWT.

Port Aransas is full of birds. Getting thm to decoy is another storie. We se wave after wave of 50 to 500 bird flocks of pins, blue bills and redheads. You need to be were they want to be. Best thing to do is to go out around noon and see were they are rafting up and set up there the next morning.

Good Luck to all yall this weekend. I will be finishing the season in Port Aransas.

Went out this morning & hunted the marsh @ the western end of Nueces Bay. I didnt even see a duck or hear them buzzing over just before daylight like I usually do. So about 8:00 a.m. I picked up and moved out to the bay. I set up on a small spoil island with 1 dozen red heads & a dozen bluebills making up the spread. I had already seen large numbers of divers on the way out so I was pretty confident on downing a couple of redheads for sure since they were so plentifull. The first birds to make a pass was a huge group of canvasbacks I dropped a drake that had broke away from the rest of the bunch and came close enough for a shot. On the way in from picking up that duck two small groups of red heads came in while I was standing in the middle of the spread. A drake and a hen went down. I hunted for about another hour and a half and had no more takers. Tomorrow I will set up on the same island bright and early.”DIVERS GALORE”.

We have a lease near Cooper, TX. One of our guys hunted it today (Jan 23) and saw a total of 7 ducks.

Another group of folks hunted it 2 weeks ago and saw 4.

This area was thick with good duck numbers and full limits until about Dec 20.

Got a call from a guy on an exclusive lease near the Red River yesterday. Said they have no birds to speak of. They were also covered up during the timeframe we had birds.

Going up to OK this weekend to close out the season. Hope we can shake a few out.

Don’t know if this helps you guys or not. But, we just came back from the lodge in Mexico and we got into what seemed every duck in the central flyway. That ice storm last week pushed everything out of central states right to the lodge. We estimated we got into 2.5-3 million birds. Lake Lewisville 01-19-2007 09:57
Cloudy, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees
Mallards continue to be the main duck in the Lake Lewisville area, though numbers are down a little bit from last weekend. Flight groups are getting smaller and smaller, with pair bonded groups appearing frequently. Mama’s gonna need a new boyfriend… A few wood ducks are hanging on, too. Other than that, just be aware that water levels continue to rise and some isolated spots are now under too much water to hunt.

I checked one of my hunting spots yesterday…small slough near Lake O the Pines. At 3pm there were 2 divers and 30-40 mallards. This spot has kept a good mix of puddle ducks for the past 2 years. I would agree with what Stephen Schwartz reported in that some ducks have moved out but we may have gotten a push of new mallards to the area…(As expected from a good January cold front in this area).

I have seen a lot of birds dispersed with thte rain! Of course they arent concetrated anymore, and its getting touhger to find them due to all the flooded timber around our place. I know just south of here, birds have defintely moved around…..and mayeb out. Not sure, but they arent bunched up anymore. JUst from what I’ve seen.

The challenge now will be just to find them. with this weather once you find them, you ought to do well. What are some reports on the big lakes in NE Texas? Has anyone seen any large numbers of mallards yet?

Good luck the next few weeks fellas!

Belton Lake 01-15-2007 13:29
Cloudy, Snow & Rain Mix – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
Had to take it slow out to the lake this morning due to all the ice build up over the night. I was hoping for a large increase in the number of birds on the lake, pushed down by the front. Saw a few groups flying this morning but they were far off and only had one one hen pintail come into my spread.

Hunted StillHouse Lake this morning — saw very little but did manage to bag one Canvasback out of a pair that came into the deeks.

Does anyone goose hunt? All I’m seeing is duck hunting news. Any way I had the best goose day of the year yesturday afternoon, 17 snows and blues and three canadas all shot out of the deeks. I shot a banded snow on Dec. 28 that was banded in 1988 and probably born in 87, thats a 19 year old goose.

Lake Lewisville area 01-08-2007 17:02
Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 45-50 Degrees
We hunted a small pocket of water near Lake Lewisville on Saturday and Sunday morning and killed good straps of mallards both days. There were more birds Sunday than Saturday, but the birds absolutely stopped flying right about true sunrise. It was imperative both mornings to shoot well right at legal, because the birds were done a half an hour later and there was no flight at mallard thirty.

Water conditions are much improved, though a couple of spots on Lake Lewisville itself have been drowned out.

Water conditions on Lake Lavon have opened up some new areas, but hunting results have been mixed.

Stock tanks in the Jacksboro area are putting down good mixed bags of everything from gadwalls to canvasbacks.

3 of us shot 3 scaup and 2 teal this morning. Best day we’ve had in a while. Fog was so thick the birds did not start flying until late.

Belton Lake 01-06-2007 18:12
Cloudy, High Winds – 40-45 Degrees
Hunted Belton Lake again today — looks like a few more birds have come down but very few. I had one set of five gadwalls come into the deeks and the hunters on the point adjacent to me had two small groups of gads come into theirs but other than that there was nothing flying –perfect day for it though.

Hope this report helps

Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow 01-04-2007 09:51
Cloudy, Winds Calm – 40-45 Degrees
Have hunted Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow both in the past five days and have seen almost nothing but coots and water turkeys (cormorants). The lack of ducks for this region is dissappointing but I’m hoping that more push down before the end of the season. Hope more people start using this forum from this area so we can keep each other informed.

Hey guys I am from MI and down here for a while. I belong to a small lease here and normally we are covered up with snows and dark geese. This year is different and the difference is white pelicans. clouds of them is what I mean. Do pelicans chase other fowl out of the area. Is there something else going on? Inquiring minds want to know and if you have input drop a note here for me to check as I can.

I like Camo Man’s “Drakes and dead hens never lay eggs.” signature and the MI guys in fact did lay off the hens big time in 2005 and will continue into the future or pay the price of $5 for each one taken to DU or Delta. That did include the hens taken out of MI so you other states can jump in anytime.

We had been on a real good limit run after the split, but Friday’s 3.2 inch rain has got the big ducks scattered. What is still hitting our slough is getting real shy. I watched Gadwall flare off of live ducks this am. Will see what the weekend produces. I gotta believe there are still a lot of mallards north of us and unless something significant happens they won’t get here until February if at all.

Hunting out west remains average to above average…..Around Lubbock birds can still be taken as the weather keeps them moving…
I hunted down south on the Pecos River and it is covered in Can’s, Reds and Sprigs….
You are having to wait to pick your shot for a mature drake and then waiting to pick out widgeon, gadwall, and the little divers….

Ray Roberts 12-31-2006 09:19
Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 50-60 Degrees
Duck numbers were down on Roberts Saturday compared to earlier trips this season. Those showing up in the spread were gads, a few teal that zipped through too fast to tax, and a sprinkling of spoonbills. Shot three before getting locked into a decoy-BB-bouncing-contest with my 8-year old. He won.
Lots of mud and a little more water in the lake from what I could judge. The rain should keep Jordan functional for boat launching purposes.

Cloudy, Rain & Thunderstorms – 60-65 Degrees
Here in the middle of the annual Week of Death, I am considering changing the name of the festivities to Trash Bird Fiesta. Tuesday’s hunt on Lake Lewisville featured more spoonies than I have ever seen fly at once. Clouds of grinning birds piled in from great altitudes, willowleafing like something out of a Whistling Wings video. Frustrated that nothing else would fly, we finally began shooting about eight o’clock and finished the morning with seven spoonies and a pintail.

Wednesday’s hunt swapped ringers for spoonies, and by mid-morning we started swatting them, too, ending up with six ringers, a mallard and a gadwall. It appears we will be eating more than the normal amount of duck gumbo in the coming months.

This morning saw a greatly diminished flight. Mallards were extremely wary in the light rain, and all we could scratch down was a single ringer to keep from getting skunked.

Indicator ponds in the northern Metroplex are holding fewer birds than early in the week. My pond right out back that once held more than two hundred birds a day now has fewer than fifty.

Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 40-45 Degrees
Ducks of all kinds on just about every body of water I see around this area. Everything from Buffies to Gadwals.
My brother and I hit a private tank on Sunday morn and did half decent on the gads. We had to cut things a bit short to go take care of Christmas eve dinners and such. But the ducks are definatly here now. If you have water then you should have birds.

Ft Hood / Belton Lake 12-26-2006 09:51
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
Hunting vicinity of Ft Hood and Belton lake has slowed to almost nothing. Hunted this morning and saw the same two gadwall and single drake mallard that I saw on DEC 22nd I think — I might name them as I will never shoot them now that we are so well acquainted –I was hoping the rain and cold front brought some new ones in but apparently not. I heard no other shots on the lake.

Had a pretty good puddle duck shoot lots of Widgeon, Pintails, and Gadwalls, as well as Mallards still in the area.

3 men shot 11 birds. Typical story we passed on a few groups hoping to get them a little closer into the decoys and it did not work out. Alot of geeses in that area snows and canadians.
