We agree with that notion of never leaving too early. Started Saturday by taking 4 out of 5 geese in an early flock. My son and I had to leave at 9am. Two other guys stayed behind. Saw no more birds until they started picking up at 10am. After guns were unloaded and only a few dekes still out, flock of 30 geese landed in pond while they were standing in the pasture. OUCH!

We’ll get even this weekend. Plan to hunt a local golf course that has just closed. Bringing suntan lotion, lounge chair, set of clubs, and a golf umbrella. All in camo pattern, of course.

Even though Richie was begining to doubt, I did bring in the ducks,if only we could shoot we would have glutted ourselves with game.

The good news is we weren’t skunked and we left some wildlife for next time. Funny how most of the of the birds come in as we are picking up our gear. Hence our new creed…” Never unload, never pick up and never go home.”

Saturday morning slowly. We bagged a lone black duck that came in just after legal shooting time. After that, the ducks we saw were high and spooky.
Luckily the Canada geese didn’t disappoint. Two of us took limits from two different flocks that couldn’t resist our spread. Another good morning in the field. Hunt safe.

Dear Santa: All we want for X-Mass is to come home dripping with game. Please send down some ducks from the North Pole to assist us in our quest.

Thank you Mallard Man for ending a long drought by cleaning up that Mallard hen(the only shot taken in two days!).

Nice start to second half. Decent number of mallards around. Minor cold front may have brought some birds in. Lots of geese in corn fields. Two of us ended up with a limit of 4 geese, as well as 4 mallards and a black duck. Got all four geese out of a flock of 15 that decoyed right in over the water spread. Gave the dog some work! Good way to start the thanksgiving weekend.

Dear Friends: Another first in a long line of firsts. I had scouted this area for a while and found that Mallars (30) had been coming in from the woods across the corn field into a small pond. I set up a blind at the far edge of the corn field and about five minuets before leagal time a group fo four came right over me at 30 yards. It looks like my scouting has paid off and I’m going to be in for a good day…. but wait, whats this that has just arrived and is wondering around the middle of the field 60 yards in front of my blind wearing BLAZE F’n orange?! Is it a pheasant hunter? Well if it is go hunt your stupid pheasants and get out of the center of the field. If you can’t do that get down and take some cover at the very minimum take your orange vest off as your flaring birds as far away as Massachusetts. I know he knows were I am because I’m screaming and flashing my light but he seems to be oblivious. All of a sudden Mr. Pheasant Hunter decieds to join the Waterfowl Fraternity and begins to blast away at the birds as they come across the field. He must be confident in his marksmanship abilities too because he trying to reach out at targets 60+ yards over his head. Oh, and by the looks of my watch we still have a couple of minuets to go! Thats when I packed it in. PS. Richie I saw your post, seeing how Atky is out after deer give me a call and we’ll go Pheasant(ooops!), I mean duckn’ I know a great spot in Wallingford but you’ll have to keep it on the Q.T. Over and out TUD.

Three of us went out for opening day of the second half. Shooting was ok, 4 greenwing teal and 1 mallard hen. Mostly teal and black ducks. few mallards before shooting time. Hopefully mother nature will cool it down so the shooting will get better for the rest of the season. Good luck all

Hunted the second half opener today. The 2 of us did pretty good for what was flying. Ended up with 5 teal 2 black ducks and one hooded merg. Not a whole lot of mallards around there anyway. We saw just black ducks and teal and the one merg and a few flocks of high flying geese.

I’m tired of shooting geese, can’t wait fir the ducks. Since Sept. we killed 96 geese(limits every time out). Havcen’t seen much mallards but seen hoodies, ringnecks(100 in one flock), bufflehead, a few gawall and shovelers, snows(were I can’t gwet at them), and a buch of woodies if the cold doesn’t blow them out. The migration is starting

Hunted Geese with the guys today seeing as it was last day for couple of weeks. Had a great day, bagged 2 banded birds, my 1 was a first for me. Limited by 8:45. At least my shooting was better than last weekend. Can’t wait till the season opens again.

I have hunted Gray Lodge twice this year and keep running into the same problem, “sky-skrapers” or hunters who do not realize the capabilities of their firearms. I have been hunting out of lots 1 and 2 and heading west. There has been plenty of birds, but it is difficult to bring the birds down without other hunters practicing their marksmenship on birds 70+ yards up. Does anyone have any recommendations as to a location at Gray Lodge where the hunting is good, and the number of hunters is less concentrated.

Since duck is closed, went turkey hunting this eve with my dad, or I should say my dad took me. He has been seeing alot of turkeys while bow hunting (just to give him credit, he got a 6 pointer about 2 weeks ago with the bow). So we sent out for the shotgun tags and decided to give it a try. The turkeys have been coming out into the corn field around 5:30. We set up at 4, put the decoy out (we don’t know how well they work in the fall but put it out anyway) Around 5:15 4 Toms came out into the field. Around 5:35 they walked over towards the end my dad has been seeing them go back into the woods. We called alittle and they walked right in. They got to 12-15 yards and we shot. When the smoke cleared we got 3 out of the 4 Toms.

Deployed all of my decoys for the first time. 100 geese were in the area and I had my chances but couldn’t get any to drop even though I was using the $2 apiece exotic metas. In between seasons I,m going to do some serious gunning practice.

One for the scrap book today. 3 of us set up on a farm pond in an area that has had lots of geese. We’ve been skunked there twice this year, but today it was good. Called in two geese at 720am out of flock of 12 birds, they landed in the pond and we took them on the rise after the flock circled and left. Saw several hundred birds going elsewhere, then at 8:45am, a group of 4 came in and we dumped ’em all as they tried to land in the pond. 6 bird limit and no witnesses. Quick photo shoot, decoys picked up, headed home and birds were cleaned by noon. If it always worked like this, it wouldn’t be so much fun.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some information on Waterfowling Connecticut. I just moved here from Iowa and am attending college in Hamden. Most of the places I’ve seen are pretty urban, but I’ve heard there are some rural areas. Just looking for a reason to bring some equipment out for next season. Am starting to notice that hunting isn’t very popular on the east coast. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Opening Saturday found us in our favorite duck marsh in northern Fairfield Co. I did some scouting on opening day and saw swarms of mallards, woodies and geese. We weren’t disappointed on Saturday, either. We easily got our limit on greenheads (4 apiece) and took 3 Canadas that couldn’t resist our calling. We were graced by a beautiful sunrise and even a rainbow. And ducks too. Couldn’t ask for much more. Hopefully this will be a harbinger of a great season. Hunt safe.

Made it out Sat. PM saw quite a few Teal but never had on close. A lone Canada came into the marsh looking to make a friend but I was unable to get him to come in ( maybe next time I’ll bring my call with me). Mon. I set out with Mallard Man for some Wood Ducks. I’m not sure if it was because I had a big weekend or lack of sleep or both but somehow I jumped my own decoy at point blank range. I’m going to have whats left of it mounted.

Hunted Thursday and today. Couldn’t make it opening day. Set up thursday, got 3 teal right off the bat, then got a gadwell and around 8:30 got 2 ruddy ducks. Went again today, alot of action first thing then died off, but I was able to get my birds before it died. Got another 3 teal, 1 gadwell, and a hen & drake mallard. So far for missing opening day, things are going well for me so far.

I had opening day off so gave it a try. I had an early afternoon dentist appointment and the tide was going to be LOW so I couldn’t afford to get into my favorit spot and ended up on the southern tip of Seldon’s. Had a couple flights pass over head before shooting time, they sounded like big ducks. From all the shooting behind me the guys in the marsh should have done well, I wasn’t getting a shot off. Then around 07:30 four teal appaired in my decoys at about 20 yards. I got set and stood up. One bird jumped, I got it with my first shot, the other three took off fast, I got the first and the last of the group with my other two shots. My dog, Toad, got to make his first multiple retrive which he did fairly well, he brings the birds back to shore but not necessarily back to me. I don’t know who was having more fun, him or me, he would retrive one bird and I would send him out for another and he was acting like “great I get to go again!!” Oh well, I have to work this weekend but I’m off next week. We’ll have to see if I can’t work Toad a couple more times.

Got on the scoreboard today! Decided to give it an hour before work. Drake woodie on the first shot. Five minutes later missed a second bird. Quit after 45 min. Water is very low. No big ducks around yet, but plenty of geese. Will hunt geese in a field tomorrow.

Well another early season gone. Ended up getting a dozen birds. Not bad for the few places I have available to hunt. Sure were tastey. Ten-CT, One-VT, One-NH. Well no time to rest now, have duck decoys to paint, have to finish the lay-out boat, have to fix up the blind on the big boat. Work, work, work.(all in the name of fun.)See you on the water.

starving for blood there are alot of good hunting spots for geese around the Hamden area…..I know a few farms around there and once the corn is down it is like a slaughter…….your best bet might be to head down to the coast or in a major river…i know a lot of good spots if you are interested

Waterfoul Assisn,

I believe the AP zone is closed due to the “real” migratory geese using that portion of the state to fly. The NAP does not see as many migratory birds and has a larger domestic population.
AP stands for the area in Canada that the migratory birds fly from.
The “n” in the NAP stands for Non-AP.
Hope this helps, good luck and be safe.

Just a short reminder. Check the regs before you decide on a shot size or type. I know I expound the greatness of Hevi-Shot, but as of this date it is not legal here in CT. Just because it is approved by the Feds doesn’t mean it’s legal here. The state legislature has to write it into law and specify the shot type by name (What it is made out of) to make it legal here. Good luck and I’ll see you in the blind. Mike

I haven’t had a chance to get out this year yet. The dog is awfully mad at me over that one. I hear about some guys taking a few birds, but it doesn’t seem to be as good as it was last year. I did get a chance to get out and build up the blind and saw a few birds early on, but not as many flying over as last year in my spot anyway. Hope to have a better report in the very near future. Good luck and I’ll see you in the blind! Mike

Hey whats up, hows everyone doing so far this year…..Where has everyone been hunting in new haven/fairfield county area? When ducks open up, anyone head down to the coast?
