Had a good shoot again. Not as many ducks as the weekend before but we still ended up with a limit saturday and sunday. Most of the ducks we shot were mallards with a few gadwall and teal. Overall duck numbers were lower in our area’s. There seems to be a few more geese around although not in the numbers of years past. Most of the good reports i’m getting are low duck numbers to the north which is north of a line from greenville to greenwood. The reports i’ve gotten from the belzoni area is way up. Another group shot a 12 man limit of mallards with their bonus ducks being pintail, teal and gadwall by belzoni and another group shot a 6 man limit of mallards both days this past weekend. Panther swamp is still red hot along with howard miller. A decent number of ducks have arrived at mahanna but are no where near the numbers of last year. Muscadine farms is still holding birds but they fly out early so hunting is hard after about the first hour. Fighting bayou has very few birds along with six shooter from the reports i’ve gotten. Canada geese numbers have been on the rise from memphis to tupelo. Reports I’m getting our of stuttgart arkansas is no ducks. Everyone is saying they are south of them. I believe most of the mallards are either holding on the rivers or have gone back north. The coast is still holding a good number of small ducks and divers. Mathews break has fair numbers.

I did shoot a banded drake wood duck sunday with a buddy of mine.

With the warm weather we are forcasted we might have somewhat of a reverse migration.

I’m still getting info of big numbers of mallards in south dakota and eastern iowa. I don’t believe we will get that push this year. A rough estimate of sd is 400k around yankton and more to the north. With little or no snow cover these birds are staying and have open water also. Eastern iowa has pretty much the same thing happening.

Maybe one day we will get the weather pattern we used to have 20 years ago. Until then all we can do is enjoy what we do get.

Happy New Year!!!!

Ducks are finally arriving. We had a good shoot thursday getting all greenheads and our bonus ducks. Saturday we had a good shoot in the central delta with alot of birds around. Goose numbers are kind of low for this time of year. We had a band taken off a scaup by jeremy c and had a good number of mallards around. Sunday we encountered ice everywhere. We hunted by rolling fork and had a good number of mallards around we got two limits of mallards and a bunch of gadwall. I ended up with a banded greenhead on the last duck of the day. What a way to end the hunt.

Howard Miller has a ton of ducks on it. Mahanna has low bird numbers but are picking up a few. Muscadine farms has alot of birds also. Panther swamp is loaded along with mathews break.

From reports i have received it looks like the ducks are here and will continue to build with every cold front. If the long term weather forecast is right we should have a good late push around the 15th of the month that will give us enough new birds to finish off a good season compared to last year. So far our lease has over 250+ birds. Last year we didn’t even come close to that number and we still have half the season to go.

Cloudy, Occassional Rain Showers – Over 70 Degrees
Hunted sat. saw a low number of ducks and hardly any geese. We did manage a mallard and a few smiling mallards. We only had a few look and very little shooting going on. Howard Miller WMA had decent shooting. Mahanna also had fair duck numbers. Muscadine farms has been hit or miss. If i was hunting public i would choose either Howard miller or panther swamp at this time.

Sunday we hunted the central delta. We managed 5 grey’s 2 eagle headed blue geese and a black barred speck. I saw less birds moving sunday then i have all season. We need a good cold front to hit the upper midwest with snow and lots of it. Also i did see a decent amount of geese from cleveland to just north of belzoni.

From reports i’ve gotten ND has over 250k mallards still and SD has over 800k. I did hear nebraska got a good push today with the cold front that hit the dakota’s but it still hasn’t seen the mother load. With temps supposed to be cold the next couple days might move some of these birds but there is no snow cover.

Not much to report except some rain and hot temps.

I won’t be hunting for a few weeks until the weather cools and we get a push of birds.

IS THERE ANYONE IN MISSISSIPPI THAT HUNTS WATERFOWL?

I just had to make an emergency trip to omaha nebraska. From driving to nebraska i was at an awe at the low number of waterfowl i witnessed. I started seeing a low amount around jonesboro, ar. and didn’t see a great amount until i arrived in nebraska. I saw a fair amount of ducks between clinton mo. and they picked up bird numbers going north. By the time i hit nebraska i saw a huntable number. All ponds and lakes are wide open with a good amount of birds but only in nebraska. I witnessed a reverse migration by the time i left yesterday coming back to mississippi. I saw a huge flock of snows going north that probably stopped in at squaw creek nwr. Still a good number of canadas around in nebraska but the ducks have went back north from all the warm weather. Every hunter i talked to said the same thing birds going north. I talked to a good friend of mine in south dakota and he said they have a ton of ducks and geese. The weather forcast in omaha had highs in the 50’s with lows in the upper to low 30’s for the next 7 days, no snow and no rain in site. I also saw that most lakes and rivers were very low. As far as snow geese i saw a fair amount just north of little rock and also around jonesboro. Most of the ducks that i saw south of missouri were gadwall, teal, smiling mallards and woodies. I didn’t see a good amount of mallards till i hit iowa and nebraska. With the weather we are forecast to have i don’t see a change, although we should get some rain this week.

As for the delta we had 1 gadwall taken this last weekend. Very few moving. Most of the hunters i’ve talked to have been hit or miss unless it’s wood duck hunting.

Geese are fair in mississippi but all i can tell you is we need a good weather system to drop in and stay for quite awhile from south dakota to southern arkansas.

We are going to try to make a hot weather hunt this weekend so i will report more on our delta next monday.

First off is there anyone else from mississippi on this site?

Well opening weekend kicked off this last weekend. We had a mixed bag this weekend. Consisting of mainly gadwall. We did see a few ducks in the mornings. Saturday was the best day for our group. We saw quite a few ducks moving but not many working. We did see some new migrators friday and sat. but nothing to speak of sunday. Alot of geese are begining to arrive now. Had a couple of specks give us a look but didn’t commit. We are still are very dry even with the pumping we did. Could use a good 2-3″ rain. With most of the mallards sticking around northern missouri it will take a good snow to move them. We did manage a couple mallards along with a few woodducks. Hope everyone had a good opening weekend.

First off is there anyone else who hunts in mississippi? No posts from anyone this fall!! Come on lets hear something.

Now we put some finishing touches on our blinds this weekend. We saw a few ducks around mainly woodies, teal, gadwall and smiling mallards. We set up for snow geese and made a morning hunt and scratched out 1. While we hunted we heard 1 snow shot 1 snow and saw no other geese.

Now as for the geese they started piling in on monday behind the front along with new ducks. I’ve heard reports now of mallards starting to make it to us. Alot of gadwall have made it down and even have some in south mississippi.

We need more cold weather up north but nothing is forcasted in the next 10 days the would warrant another push. 60-65 deg. highs and mid 30’s to low 40’s for lows and no rain in sight.

Again come on mississippi hunters let hear some reports.

Also a shout out to cold killer anything by you yet?

Saw a bunch of speck’s today heading east towards alabama. Some ducks starting to arrive along with a few coots and grebe’s. Have heard of a few others seeing some specks. Most of the ducks seen are woodies, gadwall, and teal. looks like water conditions are gonna be decent this year. Got most of the blinds brushed and waiting on the opener.

Well i can’t explain. No Ducks around. Mahanna on friday there was 3 ducks killed. Howard miller isn’t fairing any better. From what i’ve heard is the snow line north is where all the ducks are. Nebraska is peaking with many mallards. Most of the small pond’s are frozen and ducks are using the rivers and larger lakes. Iowa is much the same. Mizzou picked up a good bit but most of the mallards are north of there. Arkansas is hit and miss with new ducks arriving on new fronts.

Geese are arriving in force in much of the delta but very few ducks.

2 weeks ago we ended up with 3 in two days.

This last weekend we ended up with 3 in 3 days.

I did talk to a biologist this weekend and he figures most of the ducks we had went north with the warm weather.

On a positive note there was some high flights of birds yesterday heading south. Maybe some will trickle in or come back from the south until a good front hits the midwest.

Deer are on the move with the rut starting in the delta and on north.

Hope for some birds.

Hunted friday to today. We had 11 hunters and ended up with 55 for the three days. Friday we had a decent day and worked a few. Mainly gadwalls and woodies with a few mallards. Saturday was the same story only a strong south wind. We did see a few migrating ducks but nothing that would work. Today was greeted by a north wind cloudy and a few showers. We managed to scrap a few birds but nothing moved till after we started picking up. Figures. Anyways pippy took his pup out for the first time and the pup got his first bird this weekend. Although we didn’t get to work him as long or as much as we wanted. Most of the delta i heard got around or over a inch of rain last night and this morning. We did see a few geese moving in but not many.

All in all a ok opening weekend but we need some more of the white stuff up north, and it needs to stick around for a few weeks.

We did also manage to introduce waterfowling to a few new hunters. Mad mike and little hunter.

We also drug out an old waterfowler known in our parts by old ken and his son logan.

We had a great time and look forward to many more. Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Other reports is swiftown is hot right now as is belzoni in spots.

Mahanna is fair with not much water and a few ducks. I heard ducks are down there by 50 percent from last year at this time.

Howard miller is much the same ok water and ok ducks.

Muscadine had a fair shoot.

Sunflower is a woodie haven.

Just got back from building a blind saturday. Saw a decent amount of ducks, mainly gadwall and woodducks but there was a few mallards around. Didn’t see many geese but did see a few bunches. Most of the delta region is in need of a good rain. It was extremely dry but where there was water was holding ducks. Won’t be going up before the opening weekend so i will only be able to post on what i hear. Pray for rains!!

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
Opening weekend was a decent sucess. I heard reports out of some of the WMA’s that were poor to fair. The best luck was on mahanna and panther swamp. Most of the birds that were taken on mahanna where in the timber area and mainly mallards and wood ducks. Howard miller was a bust with under 20 birds being taken for the opener. Six Shooter reports have been strong with many limits being taken. As for us we had a good number of mallards and gadwall with a few wood ducks.

With the cold fronts that are forcasted to move into our area this week bird numbers should increase.

Geese are in fair to good numbers depending on where your located.

We will be making another hunt this weekend and i will report on next monday.

And if i hear of any WMA reports i will update as i hear.

Folks,

Until this weekend,I have not seen so many ducks in Alabama in over 15 years. I hunted the river and every creek, slough, hit pod and water hole I came to was was frozen solid for 3 days this weekend…but the rivers was a different story…..ducks everywhere! I must say the frozen fields, pods,etc in Mississippi and Alabama has pushed all kinds of birds to our state.

I went to Olive Branch,Ill and shot giant Canadian Geese for 3 days and we hammered them.
Also if you think the ducks are way south think again. Sunday we shot Mallards coming in to our decoys in a cut corn field! Just like shooting them in Canada!

I believe that alot of our problems are from all the water plus an early fall with messed up weather then more rains and then cold.

It’s not as much a shortage as it is spread out everywhere!

Hunted from friday to sunday. Friday we busted jerk in the ice only to see 15 total ducks in the air for 4 hours. Did manage to kill a snow goose and should have killed a speck. No ducks to speak of in the air. Saturday afternoon we went to a deeper lake to find open water after busting ice 1/2 the morning. We ended up killing a limit of mallards and scaup. We saw quite a few birds around this lake due to a river being within 1 mile of it.

Saturday we set up for geese. We had a bust there and ended up with 1 eagle headed blue. Saturday afternoon we decided to try the lake again and found it was froze with just a handfull of ducks on the ice. We did manage to scratch out a few pass shooting but not what we expected.

Sunday we decided to try to break ice and try this lake again only to find it was 4″ thick.

As for all the public WMA’s in the south delta iced up is the word. Howard Miller has no birds and unhuntable. Muscadine Farms iced up no birds. Mahanna does have some open water if you can get to it with a few ducks.

As for the ducks the only sucess i’ve heard was from the big muddy. The river is high and if you can find open water that you can get to you can do very well. Talked to 2 groups that limited within a few minutes on saturday, although they said it was difficult to get in and out of the river.

I don’t know where the ducks are but we should have birds around right now. Cold temps and frozen water to the north and VERY VERY FEW BIRDS. I’ve heard reports that the birds are holding in missouri but with the temps they’ve had in the last week we should have seen a push to the delta. I have heard no good reports anywhere but the river.

This year we were suppose to have record numbers of ducks. From what i can tell is they are off from last year. I haven’t seen bird numbers this low since the early 80’s. Our south mississippi woodducks are down also and i haven’t seen a push of birds since the second week of the season. I hope all changes within the last couple of weeks but i think it will remain dismal at best.

I wouldn’t doubt if we don’t see a restricted season next year and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if we did have a restricted season if it was to bring bird numbers back up the next year. We have had weather that should bring birds to the delta and nothing has been showing up. I can’t beleive that these birds are holding north with the snow and ice and cold temps they’ve had.

well hunted with a few different party’s from friday to today. Saw just a few ducks friday and should have shot a few pintails but due to little water on one of our holes they wouldn’t finish. Saturday was a totally different day. I hunted with my son and big brian J. We managed to scratch out a few birds but not what we wanted. We shot 5 mallards and 7 teal. We had many chances to harvest more birds but opted for mallards with teal at 20 yards. All in all it was a very decent day. We saw a increase in mallards along with a huge increase in teal numbers. The only bad thing was not having much sleep due to big brian. Never heard such a loud snoring person in my life. I guess its a nebraska thing.

Anyways we did manage to limit on sunday but did not see hardly any teal. We did manage some gadwalls and pintails. We had to end our limit up with some smiling mallards but it was still a fun and good hunt.

Today was a blue bird no wind and no working ducks. We did have a couple mallards try to work and did see a lot flying high but we called it a day at 8.

We did manage to see a couple thousand geese start to use our area and hopefully they will continue to build in our area.

As for south mississippi we didn’t see too many birds on the increase. Usually we have more woodie’s in our area but they continue to slowly build.

We had a pretty good hunt from what im hearing and i guess the only sad part about the hunt was no sleep due to brian J .

Mahanna duck numbers remain low but still some decent hunts have been had.

Muscadine farms has also had some good hunts but not many people have been using this wma.

Not much else going on but it seems if we get some good weather up north we could get some good numbers within the next few weeks.

Until my next post hope all do well and have a safe hunt

Hunted all day on the 10th, 11th, and 12th…..and I’m sad to say our totes were light after each day. Saw thousands of mallards but they were happy eating Milo on the refuge. Too much water as the river is out of the banks. Managed to take Blue wing teal and 2 blue bills on Sunday morning. Too much water makes it extremely difficult in taking a limit of mallards right now.

We had plenty of ducks on thursday as I scouted thousands of acres. Then Friday morning saw very few killed (2). Then saturday saw a grand total of (5) ducks with oxygen mask on flying really high.

Then yestrerday we killed 5 saw very few again.So far after 6 days of hunting it has been the worst season I have seen in a long time.I thought the population was up 15% this year?

Hopefully things will pick up for this week because it is horrible!

Opening Day in North West Mississippi was a lot like hunting the special teal season (September) in Alabama…. The sky was mostly filled with green wing teal. Some Hollywood ducks and a few mallards were taken but nothing like we had hoped for….Looking forward to some cold weather and heavy snow cover up north.

Well friday was a bust for our group. We saw very few birds but did manage a few. Saw a few geese and a few high flying ducks which some were mallards.

Saturday and Sunday we faired much better. We shot a variety of ducks and 1 eagle headed blue goose. Did see an increase in mallards with a few other big ducks. Sunday we had a decent mallard and teal shoot with a few grey ducks mixed in.

From what i’ve heard is mahanna and muscadine farms have had good shoots on mixed bags of ducks. Some mallards and some greys with teal and smiling mallards.

Sunflower also had some decent mallards with mainly woodies filling out the bags.

I did talk to a few groups that did very well this weekend and a few that didn’t.
Most shot a few mallards and greys but most shot teal and smiling mallards.

A group around belzoni did well on teal with a few big ducks and reported an increase in mallard numbers but not many wanting to decoy.

With this cold front coming in the birds seem to be moving some and from what i’ve heard bird numbers have been coming up. A buddy in the dakota’s said most of the smaller ponds have froze up now just leaving the larger lakes and rivers open. With snow forcasted in the upper part of the country we should keep on seeing good numbers of birds migrating. I’ve had reports up till this morning that a decent push of ducks and geese are moving behind this front. Most of the snow geese have moved south of the nebraska, iowa, and through mid ill.

A buddy that hunted this last week in stuttgart shot their limit of mallards along with a few mixed ducks. He said they just began getting their mallards and said it should only get better now.

Hope all had a decent opener and a safe opener.

The opener was slow for alot of groups but some did have success as well. The most any group killed was 20 with another at 14 but most were 2-8 birds.

We need artic blasts and North winds to move the ducks from the Dakotas. I talked to buddy of mine there that said every pot hole lake,stream were crammed full of Mallards.

We need the weather to cover there food up and snow like hell all the way to southern Ill.

Just pray because this was the worst over-all opener that I have seen in years.

This was absolutely the worst opening weekend that our group has ever experienced in 10+ years in the delta. Saw maybe 100 birds in 3 days, very few geese.

Managed to kill 3 GH and 3 Woodies but that was it. Plenty of food, water, etc., but no birds.

I believe its going to be a slow opener. We just don’t have the birds that we normally do this time of year.My connections in the Dakotas and in Canada with zero snow cover tell me they are covered up in waterfowl. Its going to be a while we need major and I mean major weather to push the birds south. A pacific cold fron does help but we need those artic clippers that make it nasty!

Not much is happening in south mississippi. A few woodies have started coming in.

South delta- a few birds have begun to arrive. Mostly teal and woodies and smiling mallards(shovelers). A few geese have also begun to arrive. Looks like we will have a good amount of feed in the area this year due to the rains and crops not being harvested. Looks like we are about 1-2 weeks behind the migration so far, hope it starts to turn on before our opener after thanksgiving.

Well hunted last saturday and sunday at sunflower and ended up with a mixed bag. Mainly woodducks and a few mallards.

From reports that i’ve heard is the Mahanna now has big ducks again and good to very good numbers. Most of the bags have been mallards and gray’s with a few pintails mixed in. Although you have to scout to see what holes they are going into.

Howard miller has very few big ducks, most of what is there is shovelers and a few teal i would say duck numbers to be fair.

Shipland has been good with quite a few mallards being shot with some woodducks. I would say duck numbers to be fair to good.

Panther swamp has good numbers of birds as well.

I do know that Howard Miller will be packed this weekend so it looks like the best bet is going to be mahanna or panther.

Good numbers of geese still remain in the south delta. I did see a group of swans on sunday.

I have noticed that since my last trip to the area that there is not as many big ducks but a fair amount of little ducks.
The exception is Mahanna this past week.

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 60-65 Degrees
Hunted Sunflower for a timber hunt. Ended up killing our limits of woodducks (3each). Not as many mallards as the past few years but still some around. The mild weather in the past few weeks have some birds moving back from the south and i hope we don’t loose any of our birds. I have heard reports of high concentrations of mallards and specks and snows already moving back up into the midwest. I wish it would just stay cold for the whole season instead of these mid season warm ups. Word from the central delta is that good numbers of ducks still remain but not as many mallards as the start of the season. Reports from Mahanna and Howard Miller WMA’s is fair amounts of ducks (80% shovelers with a few teal and mallards) with very few limits being reported. Most of the cover at Howard Miller is now under water or knocked down by previous hunters. ATV trails are almost not travelable. As for Mahanna most of the hunters are seeing very little for ducks. One of the reasons is that they didn’t get the crops planted this year due to the spring flood. I would suggest going to other WMA’s in the central or north part of the state. Most of the good reports i’ve been hearing with good to very good numbers are from the central delta to northern delta regions. Most public area’s in those regions are holding good numbers of all species of birds and very little hunting pressure. As for south mississippi woodducks are 95% of the ducks in this zone. I have heard of fair duck numbers on the coast with grays, teal, redheads and some woodducks making up the majority of the birds.

I have seen quite a few canvasbacks this year and even could have bagged a couple if the season was open. I think i have seen more this year than seasons past.

Scuap are also way down this year. I bet i haven’t seen a quarter of what i saw last year. I sure hope those birds can come back in the near future.

LAST TUESDAY,WEDNESDAY,THURSDAY AND FRIDAY WERE GREAT AGAIN.SATURDAY WAS MADE A WINNER BY KILLING 4 GIANT CANADA’S THAT CAME TO CALL WITH NO DECOYS OUT. SUNDAY WAS TOUGH BUT KILLED A BANDED TEAL.

MOST OF MY LEASES CONTINUE TO DO GREAT.THE ONES THAT DO BETTER PICK-UP DECOYS CAMO PITS AND BLINDS CONSTANTLY AND WORK AT HARVESTING DUCKS.

It continues to be a great year.I had 6 guys in a pit yesterday and we were limited out by 10.30am.If we could have shot better would have been done much earlier.

My dog continues to amaze me yesterday she made a double retrieve with 2 ducks at same time.I am amazed at watching her every hunting trip.

We have killed over 500 ducks over her this year and she has lost 2! Thats incredible.

I still have some day lease dates open for the year.I have some guided days available but are almost full.

WE HAD 6 GUYS IN A TIMBER HOLE SUNDAY MORNING AND THEY WERE LIMITED OUT BY 720 AM! I TOOK A GROUP TO A HUGE RICE FIELD AND WE WERE DONE BY 9.00AM.LIMITS OF MALLARDS,GADS,TEAL,PINTAILS AND SHOVELORS! i HAD 2 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEKEND ONE WAS WATCHING MY 22 MONTH OLD BLACK LAB MIDNIGHT WHO IS BECOMING THE DOG I KNEW SHE WOULD.SHE MAD A RETRIEVE OF OVER 600 YDS ON A CRIPPLE GREENHEAD THAT FELL WAY OUT IN THE STANDING RICE! THE SECOND WAS THE RETRIEVE OF THE GREENHEAD THAT WAS DOUBLE BANDED!!!

IF YOUR LOOKING TO BOOK THE HUNT YOU BETTER HURRY BECAUSE WE ALMOST FULL FOR THE REST OF YEAR.

All of my leases are way ahead in numbers of ducks harvested this year.Alot more big ducks early this year than I can remember in years.

The bean fields have been red-hot early this year.I have some that have already killed over 200 plus ducks in a short period of time.

The snow geese numbers are coming in daily by the millions.

It looks like it will be a banner year for the North Delta.

Good numbers of ducks and geese are still in the delta with more arriving daily. I have talked to many groups of hunters with great results. Most have been getting limits with a mixed bag almost everyday. I have also heard that this is the most ducks that anyone has seen this early in the season for quite a few years. As for south mississippi woodducks seem to be the most abundant birds but there is some other ducks mixed in.

Good numbers of birds have been being taken at panther swamp, shipland, and sunflower from reports that i’ve gotten. Howard Miller reports is that the birds have slowed and the geese that where there have moved. Mahanna has also slowed down with only a few birds being taken.

As for the coot killed from Alabama (yes you know who you are) congrats on your speck band. But i did hear your brother shot the bird so you should really give him the band.

Well it’s about time again, just a few short weeks away. I’ve had reports of the first flights of specks and snows to be showing up in the delta. A few early migratory ducks have also been showing up. Although not many are staying unless they find water. Most of the farmers are still in the fields due to the dry conditions. Most area’s have yet to start pumping but i’ve had some tell me they are going to be starting next weekend. As for south and central mississippi i’ve heard of some good flights of woodducks and some ringnecks are starting to show up. We need some good rains in the next couple of weeks along with some cold fronts up north. It looks like we are a couple of weeks ahead of last year but we need some good cold weather to hit.

All the birds shot were juv.’s. I did hear of some decent pockets of sob’s around just north and east of us. Belzoni to midnight is holding good birds and so is the yazoo management area at grace. Although they are moving out daily.

Looking forward to next fall and hopefully the geese will move to our area like a couple of years ago.

All in all we had a decent year thanks to a good december.

Well fellows we had a record harvest. We never held large number of birds. The snows would move in and out in matter of a few days.

Each morning you never knew what to expect.
We had success over large decoy spreads and just “GRINDING” the ducks out each morning.

Mallards were off by 30% Teal were up by 60%.
The youths should do well this morning!!!

Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 40-45 Degrees
Well hunted the last weekend after a couple weeks off due to very few ducks. Hunted thursday with a mixed bag of woodducks and shovelers very few ducks moving and no geese around.

Friday turned out great with a mixed bag of mallards, teal, pintail and gadwall. Three hunters filled a limit by 10:00 with a bonus canada goose. Still very few birds moving and no geese to speak of. What we did see worked excellent.

Saturday we had a full blind and the ducks totally turned back to their normal. We still harvested a few with a mixed bag of gadwall, shovelers, and teal. Hardly any mallards to be seen and a few geese flying by.

Sunday we still had a full blind and shot six birds. Very few ducks to be seen. More geese did show up but they are not in the numbers we should have for the last weekend of the season.

Monday we tried our luck at goose hunting and ended up with a few. We hunted a flock of 75k+ but they gave us very few chances because of the number of birds. Very large flocks and not wanting to land with 750 birds(decoys).

All in all we had a decent year but not up to average like years past. Most of the ducks in the south delta didn’t stay or moved south. We just seemed to miss all the fronts and most big ducks stayed just north of our area. Hopefully we will have a good hatch this year.

Having nice hunts in the fields. Kind of strange, One morning teal and widgeons, next morning Mallards. Still taken the 40 plus yard shots at the Sprigs!

Mississippi river is risen. Should pull birds from the fields later this week.

Hunted over the weekend with better results than previous weekends, limits but mixed bag. Tons of teal and gadwall still around, mixed in with some greenheads.

This last cold push should help wind the season up, hopefully there will be a continued push of new birds. Plenty of shooting though

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 25-30 Degrees – Ice
Hunted thursday till sunday morning.

Thursday had cold temps and frozen water. Opened a good hole in the ice and saw no ducks. We saw a few geese and shot two. Thursday afternoon we saw a few more birds and ended up with mainly smiling mallards 10 ducks, 2 geese.

Friday tried to hunt geese. We watched as the geese in our area went southeast and never returned. We decided to check out some catfish ponds and then return for a afternoon hunt. We saw a few birds on the catfish ponds mainly scaup. We drove back to our blind and shot a couple more smiling mallards along with 2 greenheads. Decided to give the goose spread a chance so we hunted from 3 till sunset with only one flock giving us a chance which we decided to let make one more turn and they left.

Saturday hunted the blind again. We got a mixed bag of smiling mallards to ring necks. What has happened to all the birds? No geese and a few ducks but nothing like 2-3 weeks ago.

Sunday tried to hunt our main blind again, same results.

Hopefully we will get some birds into mississippi before the close of the season. Very few mallards for this time of year and only seeing a small amount of pintails but a ton of smiling mallards. Don’t know what to think should have good numbers of ducks by now. Hopefully the next 3 weekends will bring some birds.

Fri. 12/14 to Sun. 12/16 – Worked hard Fri (cloudy)to get ducks in (specks early AM, mallards, gadwall, teal, and pintail) 17 total. Saturday work hard until wind and rain, 7 man limit in less than an hour after rain. Sunday (Sunny) – 7 man mixed bag limit by 9:00!
Nice harvest for three days!

Well saturday morning started with a few ducks at shooting time then the rains started in. It rained and rained but it also rained ducks. We ended up with a four man limit and a blue goose.

Sunday was very much the same except no rain.

The ducks consisted of a mixed bag. A few mallards and teal along with a few others. The high light of the day was my son shooting a canvasback on our lease, which is a flooded bean field.

Other reports that i’ve heard is that howard miller has a large number of ducks, mahanna has been picking up a few, reports out of greenville of large numbers and limits, the belzoni area has a few ducks but not like the west delta.

If you have been drawn at howard miller you need to be hunting there. Estimates friday was 25k+ with 50% mallards. With 5K new birds. Very little hunting pressure has been seen so far this year.

Quite a few geese in between greenville and cary between hwy 1 and hwy 61. Saw lots of medium sized flocks feeding all along the area.

If the weather stays cool and missouri and arkansas keeps getting hit with storms we should continue to get ducks into mississippi.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
Well we had a good number of ducks and geese in our area this last weekend. We were able to enjoy a good goose hunt friday, we had alot of snows and blues moving in. Although we didn’t have the numbers of years past at this time. But i guess harvesting over 20 birds a day is still decent.

As for ducks we saw alot of new birds moving into the south delta. We shot a few mallards and woodducks but we still don’t have the birds. I think another 2 weeks we should be picking up birds and should have some decent shooting.

As for the delta region wma’s. There is still some good hunting coming our of mahanna although you have to work to have good shoots. Howard miller is still doing fair but not up to expectations. Shipland is picking up a few birds along with sunflower and the delta national forrest. I would look into sunflower and delta national as birds continue to move into our area.

Well just got a call from our area in the south delta, specks are arriving along with a few ducks. This cold front is just the first to hit. Hopefully we will continue to pile the birds into the delta with the next fronts. Water conditions are rising and should continue with each rain.

For those of you hunting the public wma’s make sure you check you area most are doing draw hunts this year.

Also the snow goose conservation order is in effect make sure when hunting them that you get your conservation #, which can be obtained from the wildlife and fisheries.

This cooler weather gets one to start thinking about the upcoming season.

1st season for doves is over but the 2nd season starts up this weekend. I didn’t see but a couple birds while driving around and only a handful in our field. We had a great first season but I don’t know if we’ll be doing much damage on the second season. We need to be out brushing up blinds anyways
