Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees
From what I have heard it was a slow start to the season in the center of the island, south shore… . Reports from the north shore indicated that the numbers of birds on the harbors were down. It seems that over the past few years birds have been arriving latter than normal. Quiet a few complaints about the debris in around and under the water and on the marshes as result of Sandy. Take care going and coming…. on the waterways and marshes. Enjoy your time afield, on the water, and the marshes. // Some good interviews of Fred Zink by Skip Knowles in the Sept. issue of Wildfowl magazines, and by P J Rielly in the Dec. issue of Wildfowl. Over the past couple of months I have also read an article by, or interview of Clay Hudnell on helpful hints… . Clay worked for and with Fred Zinc for many years as did his brother Field. Exactly where I read it leaves me now….but I will edit it in as soon as possible. If you recall that article drop me a PM… . If you haven’t read these…. do so they are very good. Some good waterfowling info in this months Field and Stream also… . Buy two duck stamps… . Think safety first.

DukGuy, Thanks for the come back…. . We’re doing ok….. . Was without electric for 7 days….in my neighborhood.. .Some were without power for over 14 days. Just a few left without power as I write this. Lots of help on getting electric back from other states… . Most all had or got generators. Gas was a problem last week but seems to have cleared up within the past few days. The odd and even rationing helped and deliveries seem to be getting back to normal. Most of the folks on the island have grown up with these storms…. . There was good local preparedness. The worst part was for those that lived on the water close to the inlets and harbor entrances… . Quiet a few homes were lost. There is a lack of housing although the government and local agencies seem to be getting on top of it. Local cleanup has been rapid… . Hopefully all will be getting back to a more normal state for Thanks Giving. We do have a lot to be thankful for. GNR. PS The local ducks didn’t seem to mind the storm a bit. Go figure…. .

It’s a good time of the year to start cleaning up, repairing, and reorganizing your hunting gear….. . Along with the general maintenance, take time to think about new ways you can make pre hunt packing… easier next season. One thing you can do is to store your equiptment in a fashion that makes decoys and accesories easy to find and sort in a timely fashion. It seems best to have a rack system at which you can quickly grab the needed numbers of different species. It’s usually best to think species number ratios that match the spot you have scouted, then bag them along with other needed accesories… . Work smarter not harder. Enjoy the off season,GNR.

A big thumbs up for John Devney’s article in the spring 2012 issue of The Delta Waterfowl magazine titled “The Hole in the Bucket” on page 8 regarding agriculture change that threatens to drain wetlands and the use of Swampbuster to help ensure a strong wetlands base in the US. John is the director of US policy for Delta Waterfowl. Check it out and work to preserve all wetlands as they provide breeding grounds for all types of wildlife, prevent flooding, and act as Mother Nature’s water purefication plants… . // Reports from Captain Sly indicate that some flatties are still being taken, along with small bass, blues, and Weakfish. Had a nieghbor Ed that passed away a few years ago. He had a best friend that retired as a pilot from Pan Am and purchased an estancia in north east Cordoba. He loved shooting. Ed said that we could go when ever we wanted as his friend’s guests… . All we had to do was pay the air fare and ammo costs. I have seen many pictures and videos of shooting in that area and feel as if I have been there myself… . I recently over heard a person say that they had shot fifteen hundred doves in a few days stay in that area. Someone listening said “How did your arms feel?…..”… . // I had a person recently ask me “How many birds did you shoot this season?” I answered two. He seemed to take great pleasure in my so called lack of sucess….this past season as compared to the previous. It didn’t bother me at all… . Like many of you, I started waterfowling on public lands at a time when the majority of hunters owned or leased large tracks of the best hunting areas…… . I learned to enjoy waterfowling for all of it’s pleasures and not just for the count of birds taken or the speed at which they were put into the freezer. I know that this made me a much better hunter… . Over the years along with family and friends and a lot of hard work we have had good sucess at harvesting natures bounty. We still love days though on the marsh and in the field just as much when our bag is empty… . Enjoy all the aspects of waterfowling and or your time afield // I only hunted afew times this season. I have found that it has become a time in my life when scouting clay birds and finding them has become much more attractive…. . I will though continue to make every effort, to keep you informed as to what is happening around the island regarding waterfowling….,as well as, other related news and events… . // Early on as a Field Editor for Waterfowler.com I wrote that “…on the island we have to many hunters and to few spots to hunt”… . This is still true in many respects. We also don’t hold the birds that we used to… . There are though still many fine days on the marshes and on the water to be found, for those who enjoy the out of doors and have a passion for waterfowling. Enjoy all the aspects of waterfowling. Regards, GNR.

One of the basic skills a waterfowler has to master is shooting. Now that the season has wound down….it’s a good time to hit the range and work on that game. Shoot sporting clays, trap, skeet…., they will all improve you shooting skills. Two public ranges in our area are The Suffolk County Trap and Skeet Range in Southaven (only public sporting clays on the island) (run by Hunters Sports, Inc. of Massapequa) and The Long Island Shooting Range (Brookhaven Range) in Ridge. Both have good instructors if you are just getting started and both have all the equiptment you would need to shoot including gun rentals… . Both of these ranges are open Wednesday thru Sunday from 9 AM till 4 PM. For The Suffolk Co. Range call 631-924-5600. For the Long Island Shooting Range in Ridge (they have archery, wobble trap, international skeet and trap, as well as, rifle, pistol, and air gun ranges…), call 631-924-5091. “Shoot more, shoot more often,” …Bill Miller . Improve you shooting game……. . MTC, GNR.

Well final report on spring Canadian Goose Season. It ended yesterday but unfortunately we got 2ft of snow on Monday so that put a damper on getting our gear to the field. We still managed to get some Geese this week & I got 2 of my son’s friends out that have never hunted from a layout blind. Man can those boys go throw some steal shot. They might want to practice on some sporting clays this summer.

Hunted Monday, the 24th, in a corn field while we shivered in the 8 degree temp. The heater we had going helped, but konked out on us after awhile. The hunting was good though, and we shot our limit of geese by 11am. One goose had a white spot on top of it’s head which was a bit different. Any one else seen or bagged any like this?
Personally, it was a good season here on the east end of L.I. for me and I hope you all had a successful season too.
Good luck with the remaining days.

Since the “blizzard” there’s been a few changes in the way the geese are responding here on the East End. I’ve noticed the grass fields are attracting large numbers, birds are very wary and it’s taking a lot longer to take our limits. PLENTY of geese around, just have to be patient in the corn fields.
Our last two hunts have been trying, but successful. Have seen a few Snows in the mix also. Good luck with the remaining season.

They used to let it be open to those with 4×4 or walk ins… . Call the ranger station… . New geese and ducks have ben arriving as of yesterday, late AM. North shore should begin to pick up.. . Still alot of birds down west. South fork corn lots are cooking. Hunt safe. GNR

High winds have continued to hamper time spent afield. Now snow and icreasing amounts of ice are doing the same. Most large bodies of water remain open. Smaller creeks and Bays are freezing. Think safety first. Scout and take time to watch areas you plan to acces first. Be mindful of tides, wind direction, and moving ice. // Check out the first conservationists….. on the NY FORUM… .

Hunted a corn field last Tuesday morning. We got off two quick shots on mallards just after legal shooting time with nothing to show for it, but that changed. Not much longer the geese began to fly and by 9:30 all five of us had limited out. A lot more geese around the east end now so gunning should be good. Happy Holidays!

Birds are beginning to migrate south. Small flocks flying from sun up to around 1000 am. Mostly mallads with some blacks. Rivers are freezing fast, don’t expect to be able to shoot the areas of standing water much longer. If using steel recommend larger shot, BB and #2.

Geese did not fly in the morning, did see more activity in the afternoon while deer hunting, but not the number that was expected from earlier in the week. No snows have been seen the past five days.
