Well, saw a group of blue-wing teal while I was out fishing today. There was about 15 of them and they were flying fairly high over the marsh. I’m thinking it’s a group that probably stayed south for the summer, but it still gets the blood going just seeing the little buggers. Come on teal season.

Lakes in East Texas are filling up as well. Not as much rain like dallas and houston but just what we need. Toledo Bend is full and should still be climbing with this rain. Lake O’ the Pines, Caddo, and Palestine all up a substantial bit from summer ’06 which all lakes in eastern portion should be. Hopefully will a good sign for upcoming teal and duck season

This has been a weird summer so far. I’ve been interning with the local WMA this summer, and we’re still seeing a fair number of BWT, a few spoonies, couple gadwall, and even 3 scaup as well. What’s even more strange is that the federal biologist at McFaddin NWR saw a brood of shovlers a couple weeks ago, and we saw a brood of scaup yesterday. Conditions are good down here right now, but I can’t even begin to figure out why those birds stayed here and actually some of them nested.

Been fishing the last 3 days with a buddy of mine. We’ve been doing pretty dang good. In 3 days we brought home 40 trout, 2 redfish, and 7 flounder. Best fishing I’ve had in awhile.

I’ve been saltwater fishing twice in the last 4 weeks. Kinda hard to get enough time away from school to get after them like I want to. First time out I got a limit of specks and a good flounder by myself, and then the next trip my buddy and I only got 3 specks, but the weather was horrible.

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
Very happy to have ducks join my partner and I for the last go-round of the season. They didn’t fly long by they did fly which was a vast improvement over the last couple of trips. I came up one shy of a limit but had a lot of fun getting my 3 gads and one mallard. Hunted a new spot for me, just into India Creek, which will be on the short-list for next season. Looked good for early spring bass fishing, too, so if you’re into that, give it a try.
Hope everyone managed to splash a few before the final bell rang. Cook ’em up and get the rods out.

Well we had a wave of birds hit our area for the last day of the season. My group ended up with 9 GWT, 2 BWT, 1 mottleduck , and 1 spoony. I got 5 of the GWT. It was a good hunt to end what has been an overall disappointing and frustrating season.

Choke Canyon and Port Aransas 01-26-2007 10:11
Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 50-60 Degrees
Choke is plum full of birds with little pressure from what I hear. Up near the 99 bridge, down around Opossum Creak and all inbetween is Gads and BWT.

Port Aransas is full of birds. Getting thm to decoy is another storie. We se wave after wave of 50 to 500 bird flocks of pins, blue bills and redheads. You need to be were they want to be. Best thing to do is to go out around noon and see were they are rafting up and set up there the next morning.

Good Luck to all yall this weekend. I will be finishing the season in Port Aransas.

Nueces Bay 01-25-2007 12:58

Went out this morning & hunted the marsh @ the western end of Nueces Bay. I didnt even see a duck or hear them buzzing over just before daylight like I usually do. So about 8:00 a.m. I picked up and moved out to the bay. I set up on a small spoil island with 1 dozen red heads & a dozen bluebills making up the spread. I had already seen large numbers of divers on the way out so I was pretty confident on downing a couple of redheads for sure since they were so plentifull. The first birds to make a pass was a huge group of canvasbacks I dropped a drake that had broke away from the rest of the bunch and came close enough for a shot. On the way in from picking up that duck two small groups of red heads came in while I was standing in the middle of the spread. A drake and a hen went down. I hunted for about another hour and a half and had no more takers. Tomorrow I will set up on the same island bright and early.”DIVERS GALORE”.

We have a lease near Cooper, TX. One of our guys hunted it today (Jan 23) and saw a total of 7 ducks.

Another group of folks hunted it 2 weeks ago and saw 4.

This area was thick with good duck numbers and full limits until about Dec 20.

Got a call from a guy on an exclusive lease near the Red River yesterday. Said they have no birds to speak of. They were also covered up during the timeframe we had birds.

Going up to OK this weekend to close out the season. Hope we can shake a few out.

Don’t know if this helps you guys or not. But, we just came back from the lodge in Mexico and we got into what seemed every duck in the central flyway. That ice storm last week pushed everything out of central states right to the lodge. We estimated we got into 2.5-3 million birds. (no lyin)Like nothin you could ever imagine seeing, nor will I probably ever see again in my lifetime.

Mallards continue to be the main duck in the Lake Lewisville area, though numbers are down a little bit from last weekend. Flight groups are getting smaller and smaller, with pair bonded groups appearing frequently. Mama’s gonna need a new boyfriend… A few wood ducks are hanging on, too. Other than that, just be aware that water levels continue to rise and some isolated spots are now under too much water to hunt.

I checked one of my hunting spots yesterday…small slough near Lake O the Pines. At 3pm there were 2 divers and 30-40 mallards. This spot has kept a good mix of puddle ducks for the past 2 years. I would agree with what Stephen Schwartz reported in that some ducks have moved out but we may have gotten a push of new mallards to the area…(As expected from a good January cold front in this area).

I have seen a lot of birds dispersed with thte rain! Of course they arent concetrated anymore, and its getting touhger to find them due to all the flooded timber around our place. I know just south of here, birds have defintely moved around…..and mayeb out. Not sure, but they arent bunched up anymore. JUst from what I’ve seen.

The challenge now will be just to find them. with this weather once you find them, you ought to do well. What are some reports on the big lakes in NE Texas? Has anyone seen any large numbers of mallards yet?

Had to take it slow out to the lake this morning due to all the ice build up over the night. I was hoping for a large increase in the number of birds on the lake, pushed down by the front. Saw a few groups flying this morning but they were far off and only had one one hen pintail come into my spread.

Does anyone goose hunt? All I’m seeing is duck hunting news. Any way I had the best goose day of the year yesturday afternoon, 17 snows and blues and three canadas all shot out of the deeks. I shot a banded snow on Dec. 28 that was banded in 1988 and probably born in 87, thats a 19 year old goose.

Lake Lewisville area 01-08-2007 17:02
Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 45-50 Degrees
We hunted a small pocket of water near Lake Lewisville on Saturday and Sunday morning and killed good straps of mallards both days. There were more birds Sunday than Saturday, but the birds absolutely stopped flying right about true sunrise. It was imperative both mornings to shoot well right at legal, because the birds were done a half an hour later and there was no flight at mallard thirty.

Water conditions are much improved, though a couple of spots on Lake Lewisville itself have been drowned out.

Water conditions on Lake Lavon have opened up some new areas, but hunting results have been mixed.

Stock tanks in the Jacksboro area are putting down good mixed bags of everything from gadwalls to canvasbacks.

Belton Lake 01-06-2007 18:12

Hunted Belton Lake again today — looks like a few more birds have come down but very few. I had one set of five gadwalls come into the deeks and the hunters on the point adjacent to me had two small groups of gads come into theirs but other than that there was nothing flying –perfect day for it though.

Have hunted Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow both in the past five days and have seen almost nothing but coots and water turkeys (cormorants). The lack of ducks for this region is dissappointing but I’m hoping that more push down before the end of the season. Hope more people start using this forum from this area so we can keep each other informed.

Hey guys I am from MI and down here for a while. I belong to a small lease here and normally we are covered up with snows and dark geese. This year is different and the difference is white pelicans. clouds of them is what I mean. Do pelicans chase other fowl out of the area. Is there something else going on? Inquiring minds want to know and if you have input drop a note here for me to check as I can.

I like Camo Man’s “Drakes and dead hens never lay eggs.” signature and the MI guys in fact did lay off the hens big time in 2005 and will continue into the future or pay the price of $5 for each one taken to DU or Delta. That did include the hens taken out of MI so you other states can jump in anytime.

We had been on a real good limit run after the split, but Friday’s 3.2 inch rain has got the big ducks scattered. What is still hitting our slough is getting real shy. I watched Gadwall flare off of live ducks this am. Will see what the weekend produces. I gotta believe there are still a lot of mallards north of us and unless something significant happens they won’t get here until February if at all.

Hunting out west remains average to above average…..Around Lubbock birds can still be taken as the weather keeps them moving…
I hunted down south on the Pecos River and it is covered in Can’s, Reds and Sprigs….
You are having to wait to pick your shot for a mature drake and then waiting to pick out widgeon, gadwall, and the little divers….

Duck numbers were down on Roberts Saturday compared to earlier trips this season. Those showing up in the spread were gads, a few teal that zipped through too fast to tax, and a sprinkling of spoonbills. Shot three before getting locked into a decoy-BB-bouncing-contest with my 8-year old. He won.
Lots of mud and a little more water in the lake from what I could judge. The rain should keep Jordan functional for boat launching purposes.

Here in the middle of the annual Week of Death, I am considering changing the name of the festivities to Trash Bird Fiesta. Tuesday’s hunt on Lake Lewisville featured more spoonies than I have ever seen fly at once. Clouds of grinning birds piled in from great altitudes, willowleafing like something out of a Whistling Wings video. Frustrated that nothing else would fly, we finally began shooting about eight o’clock and finished the morning with seven spoonies and a pintail.

Wednesday’s hunt swapped ringers for spoonies, and by mid-morning we started swatting them, too, ending up with six ringers, a mallard and a gadwall. It appears we will be eating more than the normal amount of duck gumbo in the coming months.

This morning saw a greatly diminished flight. Mallards were extremely wary in the light rain, and all we could scratch down was a single ringer to keep from getting skunked.

Indicator ponds in the northern Metroplex are holding fewer birds than early in the week. My pond right out back that once held more than two hundred birds a day now has fewer than fifty.

Ducks of all kinds on just about every body of water I see around this area. Everything from Buffies to Gadwals.
My brother and I hit a private tank on Sunday morn and did half decent on the gads. We had to cut things a bit short to go take care of Christmas eve dinners and such. But the ducks are definatly here now. If you have water then you should have birds.

Ft Hood / Belton Lake 12-26-2006 09:51

Hunting vicinity of Ft Hood and Belton lake has slowed to almost nothing. Hunted this morning and saw the same two gadwall and single drake mallard that I saw on DEC 22nd I think — I might name them as I will never shoot them now that we are so well acquainted –I was hoping the rain and cold front brought some new ones in but apparently not. I heard no other shots on the lake.

Had a pretty good puddle duck shoot lots of Widgeon, Pintails, and Gadwalls, as well as Mallards still in the area.

3 men shot 11 birds. Typical story we passed on a few groups hoping to get them a little closer into the decoys and it did not work out. Alot of geeses in that area snows and canadians.
