I just have to ask – So just how well do the guys in the mud buddys do? Do the guys in the airboats do better than the mud buddy guys? I guess it is all about location and if the hunter knows what they are doing.

I have a buddy who owns an airboat – and although I would love to have one – the mechanical upkeep on them slows me down.

oh im serious about this stuff, like the zink movie is called “in the blood” that title fits alot of us perfect i believe.

i met up with jereme off of here this last march out in colorado for some snow goose hunting, we had a blast and he is a swell guy. i just havent heard from him on here for a while.

gooseguts, for sure this coming season, any new fellow waterfowler in my life is always a bonus to me. i had a hard time on the honkers this year here in utah, last year i took almost 20 geese, this last season i only took 2 canadas but i did kill a bonus snow goose here in utah. it was a tough year, we had to sell our boat and mudbuddy, the fields that we have hunted in the last couple of years no longer had the same owners! it was tough, but im already trembling at the thought of opening day. Especially with the new SBE II in hand!

talk to you all soon, lets keep posting on here, its always nice to hear im not the only die hard here! if you guys get a second check out my son on the kids forum in the photo section.

Hey guys,
I’m amazed there are fellow hunters talking this time of year, thats great.I agree with everbody talking there are alot of ducks and geese around. Maybe it’s a sign. We can only hope, but I do think all this water is going do some good this year. I personally thought the low water would allow more access to us waterfowlers but last year was horrible due
to the low water.I don’t know about you guys but I’m already dreaming about airboats, new coats, waders, decoys etc.Hey cutemnova I think were going to have to hook up some time you seem to be as serious as I am about the birds? let me know will go shoot some geese some time this season.Well it’s good talking to you guys.

I think the majority of the nests will be alright. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I am sure seeing a lot of birds flying around this late in the spring. My DWR buddies think our local mallard population is growing faster than biologists realize because they nest all over the valley.

That is good news. My boys and I jump the river every now and then late in the season, below the lake. It would be nice to get some better hunting up there.

By the way don’t you have a user id for the DWR’s forumn page?

amen to that silver.

i work up in the park city area doing mobile windshields, and i have to say that rockport reservoir and Echo are very full of water, Echo has more ducks and geese on it right now than i have ever seen. If that place stayed as full as it is now, there could be some great hunting on the south end of the lake, lots of cover and lots of flooded areas with water.

I cannot beleive the numbers of waterfowl I am seeing this year. Am I seeing more becuase nesting areas are flooded out that are closer to the GSL?

And it really is sad to have heard about the damage up by Bear River Refuge with the flooding. That could really mess up some of the hunting for the years young birds at the first of the season.

By the way thanks for your post. We need more Utah members to post on here.

Hey guys — Ok, so you’re shooting snows and I’m doing yard work..sounds like you all had a pretty fine trip..good article on snows in the latest issue of Wildfowl magazine…
I recently became a member of Utah Waterfowl Association, and we just had our Spring meeting this past Sat. A.M. at the DWR bldg. It’s just $15.00 a year. Sat. we had Tom Aldrich talk about past year success as compared to other years. Also discussed the Adaptive Harvest Management program, and how all flyways’ seasons may be cut 60% overall, and bag limits also reduced. As a hunting association, we will be fighting against that, as the scientific data doesn’t support that approach. We discussed the possibility of re-newing the state duck stamp for Utah, with proceeds only for Utah projects; we discussed lowering the minimum child hunting age from 12 to ? whenever they can pass Hunters Education, as many kids lose interest if waiting to age 12; discussed the phragmites problems and the $ to fight it; discussed some of the water contaminates in the water of GSL as to how it may be getting into our birds we eat.. Good info and a group to fight for our hunting interests “IN OUR STATE’ I’d encourage your involvement.. Jeff Richards president @ jrichards@utahwater.com
Maybe I’ll see you guys at the sport show this weekend at Southtowne.. I’ll be in one of the Hunter Education booths probably Fri. P.M. –CUL–JOE

choc lab/pointer mix needs good home 03-11-2005 17:35

i have a 15 month old choc lab/pointer mix that i need to find a good home for, his name is Drake and he is a great house dog and outside dog, he is up to date with all his shots, neutered, dew claws removed, chipped for ID.

he is one very loving dog, great with children, his only problem is that he loves people and other dogs so much that he approaches any dog or person without questioning it, on occasion the other dog hasnt liked his approach too much. he has been through basic obediance classes and loves to play fetch.

if interested please email me and i can get in touch with you to answer any other questions you may have. i have pictures of him also.

nah i didnt track sully down, we were too darn tired to even leave the room at night. being out in that sun on the water takes it out of ya!

teal is doing awesome, we took her to the vet and her leg was broken. poor girl, she sure hides the pain well, he said it was a clean brake and is almost healed already, which is great news! she is a total different dog. we took her over to jasons house last night and she walked right in the house and just said hello to everyone! she has opened up and totally done a 180 from how she was in Lamar. she will be a great dog, i just cant wait till the leg is healed and i can start working her.

Southeast Colorado Conservation Hunt 03-08-2005 21:09
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 50-60 Degrees
It really was a good hunt and good to get together with Cut emnova and the crew. The six of you are scholars, philosophers, gentlemen, waterfowl kings and philanthropists all wrapped into one. It was a pleasure and we will definitely get together this next season. In-fact we will get together before the next season.

Jack really took good care of us while we were all out there. It doesn’t seem to matter where we go with Jack he gets us into the geese. The patterns and weather this year were totally different than the first week of last years hunt. Just goes to show how adaptable you have to be even for thousands of snow geese.

Good looking pictures Cut emnova. In the grip and grin section I loaded a photo of 18 geese that Bob and I shot with Jack, Chuck and Rick on Wednesday. I also put a few photos in the species section. The amount of Redheads and Pintails down there right now is just incredible.

There were so many good moments to recall on this trip that I couldn’t even begin to list them all here, but what I will say is almost getting tossed out of the bar at Holly and doing the “Dukes of Hazard” cross country run from the local authorities will stay etched in my mind for quite some time. Thanks Gilbert.

I will remember when five of us stood up and with what sounded like one single simultaneous shot we watched the five Ross geese in front of us all drop and when the sky temporarily turned black with 250+ BIG Canadians that flew 50’ over our heads from behind and totally silent. I swear at first I thought it was a cloud. Oh yea, the great hot sauce incident….. I’d better just stop there.

Moments like these, the good people you meet and the new experiences you receive will keep you coming out on this Conservation Hunt year after year. If you haven’t gone it’s something you will remember and a must for the avid Waterfowler.

alright you asked for a report so here we go.

got out there to southeast colorado around 9 pm friday night after an endless 12 hour drive, rush hour traffic in denver made it an hour and half longer than it should be.

friday night checked in with the outfitter and met this handsome friendly fella named jereme…hehe….a few geese in the area but with the hot weather most had already headed north looking for cooler climates. nonetheless we were pyshed and with that thought in our minds we headed for bed, the plan was to be up by 3 am (which was only 2 and a half hours away) and head out to the lake to give the tundra killers a run for their money out on the water. got around 500 floaters set up with the e-callers, and were just putting shells into our guns as shooting light came over the horizon, i just put the 3rd shell into my nova when Jack (the outfitter) yelled “here they come” we turned around to see probably 75 snows and ross geese 100 yards out and closing in a hurry. we jumped up and dropped only 4 geese primarily because 3 of the 5 of us only had 1 shell in their gun at that moment, still it was a great start to the hunt. during the rest of the day we had numerous geese spotted up in the atmosphere that proceeded to drop the altitude and circle our spread a hundred times or so. the end of the first day finished with 20 geese.

next day we decided to head to the same area on the lake, this time we were ready and set up with wide bushy eyes by light. guess what? yup you guessed it no geese showed up this time! with a strong south wind it seemed that alot of the geese were mighty high in the shy and heading north riding those warm thermals to their home. we saw one flock of maybe 300 geese that came over us at about 200 yards up! we finished the day around 1 pm and had 9 geese for the day. in the day and a half of hunting we ended up with a total of 29 geese with 2 of those being beautiful blues and the rest half ross geese and half lesser snows.

overall we had a wonderful time, met new people and made new friends, made numerous memories with some fantastic people.

jereme it was awesome to finally meet you in person, and i know we will find time to get out in the marsh again as soon as we can. tell Bob he his one heck of a character and let him know we finished up with two blue mounters hahaha.

i will post a few pictures on the forums if interested.

Hey guys — Last Sat. goose nest repair/rebuild project went just ‘pretty good’. We had a great turnout of airboaters and helpers, but the DWR guys didn’t pump in enough water for us to make it to all the old nests. We had fun riding around on a beautiful day, had a good social and lunch. Check it out on the Doug Miller show this Sat. nite, 11:00 pm. I’d sure like to hear about your Spring conservation hunt!! Hey Cut ‘Em, Jereme, thanks for the words on the e-collar. I’ll keep you posted on how things are going…
Hey Spry Dog — way to go! Now that’s about three more months of ‘honey do’s’ that’ll have to wait!! (By the way, I still need your help on my own ‘honey do’ project — attaching my waterfowling bike trailer to my bike) I’m jealous. Sounds like a fun Spring.
Any of you guys ever shot and eaten a snipe? I tried one, shot one last day of the hunt, and prepared it in stovetop frying pan, along with five doves shot in Sep. So they weere all cooked exactly the same. Results?? My wife and I agreed the snipe was much better, a more mild flavor, a lot like chukars. Next year I’m hunting snipe!! Time to clean up my clothes and dekes, check over my notes and list what I want to do for next season while it’s still fresh on my (old) mind. CUL — JOE

jereme,

good to hear from you buddy, i myself didnt get out again since the new year began, 6 month old little boy and wedding plans took over.

conservation hunt!!!! coming up soon, we will be in lamar from march 4th through the 7th. staying in the lamar inn (already have reservations), jack told me that our hotel is directly across from the bar(T R O U B L E). for sure we need to at least get together and share white geese stories at the bar if your still in town then. i still have your cell number on my cell so i will be able to get a hold of you once we are out there. How many guys are going down with you? i should have at least 5 guys and possibly 9, hopefully the birds give us plenty of shooting.

anyways i must go now, my eyes are sagging and the next day or work is fastly approaching.

The furthest recesses of my mind. I still can\\\’t find my marbles. 01-26-2005 23:11
Cloudy, Heavy Fog – Over 70 Degrees
Good to see some of the posts and I really had similar experiences throughout the season.

It seemed work took its toll this year on both family and hunting time, but I was still able to get a few days (20) in the swamp. Unfortunately this season I have been on the road as much as I have been in town so my posts were few. I will continue to post where and when I can.

All-in-all this year had some pretty special memories……

This was my pups first full season and on opening weekend I watched him try to retrieve a winged goose. The goose pretty much beat the crud out of him. He is still wary of geese to this day. Damn that was a funny site. The following weekend I watched him retrieve four birds downed at the same time without missing a beat. Eventually all those hours paid off.

I got to “guide” (I use this word loosely) some friends from out of state that drew out on swan tags. Damn what a relief when they got those two grays.

I will never forget the Hollywood hog Mallards that flocked to our boat every time we pulled the camcorder out in early November, the amount of late season Green-winged Teal and the one Snow Goose that got away.

Cutem nova,

I have been in El Paso the last few weeks so we never did get a chance to do a “Bird and Breakfast”. We will definitely get something together next year. But hopefully before we even get to next season we will get something together for the Conservation hunt. Right now the plan is to be there through the first week and weekend of March. I will e-mail you when I have more info.

Joe,

If I have learned anything with trying to train Ranger, it is that I am the weak link in this equation. Any professional help is worth the price. I did use a guy here in Tooele for some obedience training, but haven’t had a chance to do any gun dog training due to my schedule. The place was called Perfect Pups and the owners name is Don Pawlak.

I do use an e-collar and especially like that it has a warning tone that I can send instead of a stimulation level. Ranger knows when he hears the tone that electricity could soon follow. I found that I rarely even use the “shock” levels anymore. As a matter of fact, he is a totally different dog once the collar is on.

Thanks for all the post this year.

joe, im no pro on dog training but i have been through quite a bit of e-collar training with my 1 year old lab, i have him to the stage now that all i need to do is give him a tone pulse on the collar and he responds to every command that i have taught him. it took alot of patience, and frustration but in the last couple of months he has really matured into a well behaved pup. he still is a pup and just whines and paces around the house when there is a dog outside that he cant go say hi to, im sure you know the routine, and geez louise the energy he has makes me tired. i have in past got alot of great insight off of the dog training forum here on WFC. good luck with maxie, sounds like you have a great trainer to help you and start you in the right direction.

Post some pictures up on the photo gallery of her, i would love to see her.

Cut emNova — Thanks for the encouraging words..I don’t know how much you know about labs, but Maxie was from two highly papered and awarded parents, and she would make a terrific Field Trial dog, as she is highly motivated with an attitude, and very difficult at times (like when I take her to the field, off leash) She’s beautiful, sleek, all muscle, and is the most wonderful dog in the world just before she goes to sleep. A dog trainer recommended this breeder to me and said she would be a good hunter, as the parents also hunted. So I love her now and can’t get rid of her, so this collar just has to work..Do you know K.C. Owens? She’s the trainer and is going to help me get going on the collar.. I got the Tritronics Sport 50, have watched the video twice now, and I sure want to make this work..Any other advice or tips would be appreciated….. Also, I enjoyed your posts during this past season, hope to hear from you soon.. CUL — JOE

you will soon learn as i did this last year, how valueble that e-collar will be, as a training and re-inforcing tool. e-collars in my book revolutionalized, and sure made it much easier to train my pup.

Hey Guys –Good to hear from you. I also agree that there has been less posting than the last couple years, but I’m not giving up- I love it, and really appreciate hearing all of your experiences, both successes and disappointments..Shooting wise, this was a pretty slow year for me, too. About 20 fewer ducks than last year, and just 3 geese. But I remember each trip vividly (they’re all recorded) and I can look at each date out, think back at what happened, review the events, and laugh or swear all over again!! I just love all aspects of waterfowling, and the shooting is just one part of it.
I learned going back to the same hole probably isn’t going to be worth it, so let it sit awhile…I learned my dog isn’t quite ready for this yet, but I think (and pray mightily!) that her new E-collar will work..Look out ducks next year, here comes Maxie!! I learned that of all the weather factors, usually wind is the most important, but if there are no birds around, then wind, rain, snow, cold, or whatever, still won’t make a bit of difference. I learned to stand right by the grill and keep checking those duck breasts so the are served pink on the inside…and I learned that a 20 ga is a good firearm for killing ducks, geese, chukars, and doves…Good luck to all of you this “off season” and I hope we stay in touch. (It’s never too early to start scouting!!) Don’t forget to support our waterfowl organizations…CUL — JOE

Yes i agree with all that has been said. As I have aged for me success isnt as much a harvest thing but this year really was poor for that. I just feel for my Yellowdog she just blames me. I saw in her eyes many a morn
Shoot the seagull!! LOL Some day she will learn the wing beat of waterfowl. But the one who I owe the most thanks to is you Goose Guts. Buddy the hunting was poor but the effort and fun was still there. Thanks Man…Gone Fishing? Its time to apply for Big game. Have you noticed the new changes?
Now I am just hopeing for the words Successful on some of my applications this year starting with Turkey But only time will tell.Everyone have a great off season

cut emnova, I second every thing you said, Joe is the only editor we ever hear from, I honestly considered not re-upping for the 05 season of waterfowl.com , but it’s the reporting that the guys you listed on your post cut emnova that made me stay. That’s right us little local guys are what makes this site. This is just my opion. Oh about the 04-05 season it was the worst I can remember for geese, between low lake levels and no weather it made it tough.
It was good hearing all of your posts through out the season, and I look forward to them in 05!!

along with silver, it seems like Joe was the only field editor to share any info with the forum. Seems to me that we need some new field editors that are willing to share scouting and hunting success with other hunters in the area.

this year was a tough year, we sold our boat and mudbuddy, that cut down alot of our usual hunting areas. i took far less geese this year than past years, although i did harvest a snow goose here in utah. and for my last gripe!!! I AM STILL BANDLESS haha.
i did not get out in the marsh after the new year, work was very busy, a 6 month old little boy that is priceless to me took alot of my time, and wedding plans sure take alot of time and money.

come on march and the conservation hunt in colorado.

Joe, props to you my friend for continuing to keep us posted on what you find out in the marsh, also thank you to silverkitten, jereme, gooseguts, spry, andrea, dhinds and britton for all sharing what you are seeing on in the marsh and for sharing the success you were or were not having out in the marsh.

I found this years hunt to be challenging from other years hunts. I shot less than half the birds this year as in years past, especially last year. I felt that great numbers of birds were present, but the weather was a major factor in the lower success. Next year I am paying for a lease for a duck club. I am only doing this to get a little farther away from the public hunters. I have even thought of buying an airboat.

I am still trying to decide which load of steelshot is best, and am toying with the idea of buying a reloader and loading heavy shot. Does anyone on this fourmn reload hevi shot?

I also noticed a great reduction in the number of posts to the field reports. LAst year, there were tons of reports, and a lot fewer this year.

These are my thoughts only.

Hey Guys — Hope to hear from you before you hang up the mouse ..How’d your last week/hunt go? How’d you rate the overall season? (ducks or geese)Any suggestions for RAC meetings for our next season? Did you learn anything this season that you could pass on to the rest of us?….I’ll get back again a little later; right now I’m still in shock that the (regular) season is over…CUL — JOE
