VH,
There are snows that sit in the Brush area year round. Weird I know but they don’t leave, but then again the roost never freezes. Now there is fluctuation in numbers throughout the season, but there always seems to be some hanging around. I usually see the most in November and February through March.

Towens,
Do you see snows in Brush on a regular basis? If so what is the average flock size? Thanks,
VH

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 35-40 Degrees
For all you snow goose hunters out there I have a report. Left Thursday and hunted Friday with no luck. Only used a few dozen decoys, just didn’t have the drawing power of big spreads. On Thursday there were about 4 thousand snows and several migratory flocks came in from the south. On Saturday hunted with a few huntin’ buds and set out a massive spread with e-callers. There was an increase in snow numbers to about 8 to 10 thousand I’d say. The birds would not leave the roost for some reason, I think because of the high winds, but something got them up and pushed them our way. We had about 300+ birds lock up and come in but our shooting wasn’t great and we only dropped a few, then a flock of about 20 came in, and again poor shooting. Ended up shooting 7 and a fellow hunter got a band. If we would have been about 50 yards away from the spread we would have had the birds’ right over top, but I guess we know what to do next time. I heard a report from the Julesburg area and the birds are starting to show up but not in big numbers just yet, another week or so and the birds should be back on schedule.

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 45-50 Degrees
Have not been able to hunt much the last month because of school but I decided to get out this weekend and ended up getting 12 geese between two of us Saturday hunted a field covered in snow and managed to call in two singles and they died, that afternoon changed tactics anset up on a frozen pond. The geese loved it landed four flocks and when they do that its not hard to fill a limit so we took turns shooting, Sunday went out with the same idea in mind but had another guy set up on the same property and the prop is just too small for that had geese work but some people dont beleive in shootin them with the feet down so I resorted to shooting them at about 50 yards and dumped two that afternoon the wind picked up and nothing flew bad way to end a sub par goose season. On a good note we had our best duck season ever group of four ended up with well over 800 so i cant complain.

Ended the season with a bang. Headed out Thurs. afternoon, got to the field(wheat) in time to see my buddy that was already in the pit whack two out of a bunch. The geese had just started to fly and me and my other friend ran out to the pit in time for another nice flock, they came right in and we killed 6 between the three of us. Waited about ten minutes for a single to come in and fill the limit. It was almost too quick and easy.
Friday went back to the same wheat field and the wind was ripping. Managed to get the only four geese that came in before the wind got too bad. Decoys were tumbling and the birds were holding tight.
Saturday I took 4 guys out and had a long slow day but managed 6 geese with several opportunities. Saw a LOT more geese. Several migrating flocks coming back into the area from all directions. Even saw some high flying snows and thousands of mallards were working a corn field to the east of us. Geese went to wheat fields in the a.m. and corn in the p.m. One of the few times this year there was a morning and afternoon push. Had a couple thousand geese in the field next to us and it was hard to compete with that.
Sunday went back to the wheat field near the river with a full pit of 6. We got our 18 shortly after noon. Shot smaller bunches (<20 birds). Birds started off a little weary and wouldn't finish all the way. We got the last- day-of-the-season itch so we started taking shots at any birds within 45 yards. Mid-day the birds finished real nice and even had some trying to land on us while we were taking pictures with the truck and trailer in the field! Saw even more geese today than in the past few weeks. Again, migrators showing up, a couple flocks of snows, and mallards everywhere. Saw several(5-10) thousand geese. They were scattered and flying in no particular pattern. All in all this year was really goofy with all the snow and cold. We got lucky with the fields we had and consistently got into them. If some snows start using the area we might give it a shot. Other than that, till next fall. Posted By: PUDLJMPR Guest Wellington 02-18-2007 12:27 Sunny & Clear, High Winds - - Get set up yesterday morning and have some good wind and high expectations, saw 30 geese from sunrise til 1:30. When they started they flew all afternoon but not many came our way and the ones that did were not interested managed 1 honk all day pretty disappointing. mite try sun afternoon but not real motivated. Posted By: PUDLJMPR Guest Wellington 02-15-2007 19:36 Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation - - Back at if again, buddies made it down about 9, rite off the bat they had 3 come rite in they pop up and only dump 1 between the 2 of them! Oh well it happens. I show up at noon and they tell me the 3 are the only birds seen so far, about 2 the birds start movin, we peel a single off and he comes to us we take em and crap he is in the sun, he got hit but did the gliding off jazz and we never found him. Birds kept comin for the rest of the afternoon but in big big flocks, peel another single out of about 200 he comes rite in but we are greedy and dont shoot and he leaves but turns around and comes rite back and lands and brought his buddy with him we kill both and that was it for the day. Get out and try everyone still birds here. Posted By: yogibear Guest 02-14-2007 20:13 - - - Heading to Sterling area tommorrow to hunt Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with family - sounds like it could be reeeeal good. Snows and darks down that way as we speak. Posted By: PUDLJMPR Guest Wellington 02-14-2007 15:01 Cloudy, Snow Flurries - - Buddies went down yesterday morning and set up and i joined them about 2, tried a smaller spread today and didnt really work, they said geese didnt start movin til around 1130. I get there and 5 min later a single comes in and i kill it so needless to say they were not to impressed with that. Still alot of geese around and they are hittin a few differnt fields so i think with the weather there still could be some good shoots to be had, good luck we'll try to hit it every day til the end.
