Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 40-45 Degrees
Had a fun shoot this afternoon, group shot 27 mallards, decoyed them all into a hay field just off of union res.. The birds were coming out of fields all evening and we were pickin em off on there way back to roost. All the birds were chock full of wheat. Lots of greenheads and a few eclipse drakes as well.

I too, saw a bit of a migration today…..several hundred snows headed south……also saw 100+ Sandhills following a similar path..

Cloudy, Rain & Thunderstorms – 45-50 Degrees
Saw a little bit of a migration tonight as the winds starting coming from the north. Plenty of new teal and thousands of bigger ducks landing on union res. Also saw a flock of about 200 sandhills high and headed south

Have yet to really bother with the ducks, have not seen many using my spots, on the other hand res goose season was great, 22 honks and 3 bands, I cannot wait for geese to be in season again! if anyone can hunt south east of longmont there are tornados of mallards every evening south east of union res hittin corn

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 50-60 Degrees
Ended up having a super Robo hunt in a silage cut cornfield over the weekend,weather turned extremely windy and my friend and I both thought it would send the ducks out to feed a little early,not the case although they came early enough to collect 5 mallards a piece wow got to love duck hunting in the dirt!! Couldn’t get enough and neither could my 5,and 6 year old boys as we left deputy dog at home and had boy retrievers the next morning and shot 10 more drake mallards on the dirt.Made some great tasting mallard k-bobs wrapped in bacon on the grill with baked taters to finish out the weekend,and now am done with Colorado for a week on a good note for my annual trip to the prairies of the north have fun down here,OH CANADA HERE I COME!!!

Dang speed goat hunters!!!
Hunted the new spot again this morning, hoped for a quick shoot before I came into work.
The spot I planned on hunting is one of 4 ponds located on the property I have recently gained access to.
My plan was to hunt a pond that I had scouted after hunting Sat. and that was COVERED up with ducks that afternoon…..When I left the spot Sat. the only duck hunting that had taken place was on the far pond 1/2 mile from the pond I planned on hunting today and I was the only one hunting the place……
When I pulled up at 0530 this morning…it was obvious that something big had changed as I could not hear or see any sign of waterfowl on the pond….
A quick “once over” of the area revealed 30-50 empty hulls all over the ground surrounding the pond š
It would appear that the Antelope hunters I ran into Saturday morning returned Sunday with an appetite for ducks!!!!
I moved to the far pond (located behind 2 gates and one that you have to want to get to to find) and set up anyway……there were a few hulls on the ground and feathers EVERYWHERE……
Needless to say….The result was my first skunk of the season.
I did not even see a bird within 1/2mile all morning…..I did see several large flocks moving south like they had somewhere to be…..The ice on the decoys was nice sight…hopefully this colder weather will get some birds moving.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 60-65 Degrees
Saturday my father and I set up on a pond in a corn field and had a really good shoot. We were able to take 2 drake mallards, 2 drake widgeon, 3 drake woodies, and 5 teal. For the rest of the day we just sat around shooting doves, didn’t get our limits, but it was fun none the less.
Sunday came around and it was a bit slower. My father and I managed to take 4 woodies, 3 of which were drakes and 3 teal. In all it was a great opening weekend.

Saturday morning 2 buddies and i set up on a small pothole near a large roost, there were so many ducks buzzing us at first light it was CRAZY ! we had decided to hold out for drakes only due to the preivous evening’s scouting trip, we filled out a 3 man limit in 3 hours, could have been done in 30 minutes, heres the tally, 6 drake red heads, 2 drake mallards, 3 drake pintails, 1 bwt and the rest were wigeon.
this was some great action, many many birds in the decoys all morning.
Other friends hunting nearby also had excellent success with 5 other guys limiting out by 10 am
on sunday it was a bit slower and the wind had changed on us also very cloudy, these ducks wise up fast, we stopped all calling and the birds began to work, 2 of us filled out our limits by 8:30 mostly wigeon and mallards, 1 gwt

Not much to write about. It’s really too early yet for it to be any good. There was some mallards right at first light but none were interested in what I was offering.

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 50-60 Degrees
Hunted a new spot east of Walsenburg this morning. Got in place by 0530 to calm winds and t-shirt weather.
I ran the ducks off of the pond setting dekes and they just kept trying to get back in…
About 6 minutes after legal shooting light, I dropped my 1st ever triple on ducks!! I dropped 2 Widgeon from a group landing in the dekes and 1 teal that picked up off of the pond with the shooting then circled back around and was landing in the dekes and dead birds.
I held on the next two groups of teal hoping for a shot at some of the mallards I had seen while scouting the day before…..it paid off….Kinda..I wound up with 1 mallard, another widgeon, and finished off the morning on a group of BWT.
This is the second opener I have hunted this year (hunted the W side opener last weekend) and the 1st of the year on private land…..man what a difference! It sure was nice to be set up before shooting light and not have somebody out walking around!
This mornings setup consisted of 6 G&H floaters (mostly hens with one drake mallard) and 1 spinner. I set up in a layout on the edge of the pond and, due to the height of the grass, my layout practically dissapeared. The pre-season scouting and game plan paid off….the longest shot of the morning was roughly 20 yards….Killed everything I shot at and did not leave any witness’.
Gonna hit another hole in the morning about 1/2 mile away….hoping for a good shoot as I have to be to work by 10!
