Indian tom lake 01-12-2007 17:18
Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
springkiller55, thanks for the comeback….when you hunted at Indian Tom Lake, did you: actually see very many fligts working the lake? and did you do very well on any birds?…..in a heavy wind storm this lake seems to “short stop” a lot of birds from going over to meiss lake; but I don’t know if there’s any birds that ever come from the south to this lake?….I was told that in the 40’s it was the western boundry lake for a club that the refuge has purchased and made part of the refuge???….also, the flat area north of stateline (actual water holding resevoir) was , and may still be a partial club; but was supposedly a great hunting locatio for honkers until someone “complained???” that the area couldn’t be legally flooded???….have you ever known anyonewho’s hunted this area either????….the canal that runs north and south, on the western boundary of the oregon side of the refuge bears hunting sometimes as the widgeon and mallards use this as a highway as they come from the marsh, about 5 miles north of this area….

COLD , Very COlD one of the coldest mornings all season. 5 degrees. Geese were a lttle slow getting off of the river this morning but worked the decoy alrght. some of the birds are starting to get a little weary of the decoys. Saw 4 geese flying today with legs hanging. They have been shot at before and think twice about just dropping in..
Saw lots of big geese around. not so many of the little geese that i had been seeing for the last couple weeks.
Cold weather stays up north should make for a good couple of last weeks.
Shoot straght. Good luck

Anyone know who the guys are hunting in this area, south of Stateline road (near the dairy cattle place)? They got a bunch of Eliminators and even a Mutt Hutt. Seem to be doing pretty well hunting a piece of flooded pasture. But its got to be tough to hide in, since there isn’t a stitch of cover around.

Salton Sea Man–When we hunt Indian Tom it’s usually by boat and we just launch right off the road!! We have parked in the back and walk out on that small ridge–but I’m not sure if we are legal or not!! And we didn’t know about the trout–that’s interesting!! We hunted a week ago Sat at Tule/LK!! Three of us got a limit of honkers in the PM on the all day hunt at Tule in the league of nations on Sat!! I filmed the honkers at Tule going from sump 1b to the closed area to feed then back to 1b–so we were pretty much hosed on them!!Then got nothing there or at Lower Klamath Sun-Mon-or Tues so we left and went down to our club by Merced and actually got some Specks/Aluetians and two snows–but the duck population is next to nothing!! So are you going to be able to do the special Speck hunt at the end of Feb?? Hey thanks for the comeback!!
Later–Tom

sprigkiller55, have you hunted Indian tom lake successfully?…where did you park; besides the northwest parking lot; is there another place to park?….as it gets later in the season, the honkers will stay right on the border, ne of the lake and then fly directly over the lake in small bunches on there way to Meiss lake refuge…also, if you know of the lake….did you know that it’s teaming with cutthroat trout?…the california state record for cuttrhoat trout is from this lake and f and g plants it four time a year…..any comments?….the mouth of the williamson has been “up and down” the past week and some days not even a bird is seen and on two days the river was a goose highway as they flew down the river and directly accross the lake to the wompler ranch property…anyone shooting the wood river refuge own springs pockets?….

Not as many birds in the area but we did get lucky and have a field with a couple thousand birds that had been sitting there for 4 days and got 4 limits this morning and the birds were back in there this afternoon so i guess we will try it again in the moring.
Good luck

Temps have started to warm up. 50 degrees yesterday. not as many geese around sems like they have moved on with the weather. hopefully we can get some more cold weather and get some birds back into the area.
All the ponds and sloughs have thawed out wich should make for some decent duck hunting over the weekend.
Good luck to everyone.

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
Very cold on the lake yesterday. Good bird numbers, and plenty of action. There was a bunch of hunters at the lake today, they were setup all over the place. Seemed like folks were doing pretty well. My day didn’t go so well, we cut it short because I spun the shaft on my pump and limped back to the dock before the wind came up. I also got a leak in my wader boot so one leg filled up, not very comfortable. Oh well, I got a few birds…
