And now, on to the Breeding Ground Report.
As you may have heard around the site, conditions across most of the breeding ground for North American waterfowl have vastly improved over last years conditions. In many areas of the prairies temporary wetlands, crucial to strong hatches and nestling survival, are wet for the first time in years. One benefit to the recent drought conditions is evident in the amount of vegetation re-growth in these and permanent wetlands.
This cover provides not only protection for hens and their young but also provides the basis for many of the food sources needed to maintain health for the birds throughout the breeding season.
Waterfowlers, excited by the improving conditions have been out riding the country and report varying degrees of improvement in the overall conditions, but the general picture at this point is much brighter.
June is almost here, and soon the schools will stand empty. With the extra time we will all have with our young ones over the coming weeks it is a great time to get a new or future hunter out on the marsh to see the first born of the season. Be sure to bring along the camera and be respectful of the new and expecting mothers on the marsh. Good luck, have fun and stay cool.
