Posted By: Bumper Guest Western Ks 11-27-2006 14:44 Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 50-60 Degrees We had a small turkey day hunt. One drake, one bull pintail, one baldpate and two teal. Most of the ducks flew before we could id them. Saw a lot of birds. On Friday, we went hunting for ditch chickens and 8 of us got 31 roosters. Saturday was another duck hunt. Six of managed thirteen ducks. Mostly mallards and widgeons. Again they flew early and were not easy to identify. We need some new birds as these were pretty wary even though we had not hunted the pond in more than a week. Sunday, we set up for some geese on a wheat field and naturally they went to a corn field just north of us. Mostly snows and small canadas which are extremely unpredictable. Most of the time it was pretty good… Continue reading

We ended the day at 10:15 with a limit of geese and mallards (2 man limit). Best part was a banded bird my partner let me claim it. Posted By: Water SWAT Guest Harvey County 11-18-2006 16:10 Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees We didn’t see the birds in any numbers this morning. We killed 2 Red Hed Drakes right out of the gate. Next came the Honkers. Had a group of about 20-25 that wanted into the decoys. 5 stayed with us. Had two orver 11 lbs. All were good sized geese. Next we had 4 mallards work us. Only one wanted in and we let him, well for a minute, he was greeted by steel. I had to leave at 0800. We had some… Continue reading

Posted By: wtrfwlhunter Guest 11-13-2006 16:18 Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees Tough tough day, did not see many birds today. We managed to scratch a 2 man limit. 3 mallards, 3 teal, 4 gads. Not bad overall considering we did not have a duck in the decoys at early light. Posted By: Col4600 Guest Flooded millet pond-N. of Cheney Res. 11-12-2006 20:51 Cloudy, High Winds – 35-40 Degrees Hunted a flooded millet pond this morning. Very very windy day, figured the ducks would stay off the lake and head for a little cover and food. Me and my son were running a little late and when we arrived lots of teal were already on the water. Once we were set up we had a few nice groups work us. Ended the day with 1 redhead, 1 oddball and 6 Gw teal. They stopped flying early, and most… Continue reading

Posted By: Col4600 Guest Central Kansas 11-06-2006 23:03 Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 45-50 Degrees Went back to the same place as on Saturday. Didn’t see near the numbers as the day before, it was more like early November usually is on the Arkansas River. We did have 2 nice groups work us and managed to shoot 8 mallards. Most of the other birds we saw were flying very high and didn’t pay us much attention. It was just a very different day all around. I think some of this had to do with the moon, it was very heavy on Saturday night and Sunday morning. I didn’t notice it on my Saturday hunt because of the cloud cover. My guess is the Mallards were up in the fields half the night and weren’t following any set pattern. Every bird we shot was stuffed full of corn. Anyway, I… Continue reading

Moved everything that we could think of, boat, blind, changed decoys, blah blah blah….still flared at about 60 yds, just before they became into the hot spot. Saw fair aomount of birds. Posted By: kerhonk Guest 10-26-2006 22:19 – – – Was out for about an hour tonight working the dog and saw a group of about 25 ducks and a group of about 50 geese. These birds were high flying and moving fast. Even more exciting is the downpour we are getting right now N. of Hutchinson! Maybe it will fill up some of the ponds around… Continue reading

Posted By: Bert Holtzman Field Editor Ohio River 01-06-2013 13:12 – – – We hunted the big river this morning. We saw quite a few ducks early about ten minutes before shooting time. Five minutes in a drake mallard came and went down. We saw about 3-4 groups after that. Another slow morning. Hopefully it gets better next weekend. Very few people hunting right now. Posted By: Bert Holtzman Field Editor Ohio River Bottoms 12-25-2012 10:05 – – – Monday hunt: saw more ducks. Mix of hoodies, mallards, a few teal, and some wood ducks. Had hoodies swimming all morning in the decoys. No chance at any ducks for the most part. One group of mallards worked okay. Don’t bother calling at ducks at this point until we get new ducks. They want no part in any call. Best to let them do their thing. Merry Christmas. We’re headed to… Continue reading

Posted By: Bert Holtzman Field Editor Ohio River 11-04-2012 20:18 Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 45-50 Degrees We hunted twice again today. This morning we set up in a creek close to the river and got three mallards. There wasn’t a whole lot flying. We saw a handful of ducks, woodies and mallards. This afternoon we hunted a slough along the river. Wood ducks all around from 4 PM until shooting time. I should have had two but my gun misfired on what would have been an easy double. This was the first weekend of hunting for my lab, Dakota. She did pretty good although we did have some issues yesterday with her not picking up a duck on a retrieve. I worked… Continue reading

Posted By: Bert Holtzman Field Editor 03-02-2012 22:06 – – – Please keep those affected by today’s tragic tornado outbreak in your thoughts and prayers. Posted By: Bert Holtzman Field Editor Ohio River Zone 01-22-2012 12:26 Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water We set up in a flooded field/flooded timer this morning for strangely enough, wood ducks. There had been some mallards also using this general area. What a pretty spot. I’m sure we will hunt it every so often next season and in future years as well. There were several small groups of wood ducks flying early. We had one group of four drop in front of Marty and I, but only got one. The other groups of ducks just flew by. The mallards we had been seeing never showed up. I was able to get a green wing drake while trying to jump… Continue reading
