Cloudy, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees
Sat Dec 4,

What an unbelievable display of birds this weedend… Sat up in the same place as last friday. You would think it was the last week of the season. With this many birds I felt I didn’t take enough dekes. I don’t even try to put a number on them. Ended the day with limit of (2)teal, (2)widgen, (3) gadwall, Missed two small flocks of mallards by letting them circle one too many times. The main group of birds are now widgen, by now it mainly gadwall and teal. but I’m not complaining. Its get great to have birds work the dekes and not call shy.

The geese are feeding at night with the bright moon and coming back about 8 to 9 am that should change by this weekend with the new moon or no moon. I have seen more dark geese already this year than most of the last few years combined. They are hanging around till their shot at a few times and heading south. Saw birds working for the guys at bird island. Saw three setting down in their dekes and none come out, great shooting and calling.

If you have chance get out. The birds fly till about 8:30 am and they start back about 10:00 till almost 2pm. Thats when I leave. So you have to give more than just the morning I think the birds have most of the hunters patterns. Never heard another shot after 9am in the north end and too many birds flying for no one to shooting.

Anthony, I’m not going to be able to make it back for a few weeks. Scouting for a buddy’s coues deer hunt and the hunt opens in a week and a half. I did go yesterday and shot 1 teal. Got on the lake a little late and have never hunted ducks there before. It was just trying to feel out the lake, having only been there in spring and summer fishing. Started on the northwest side and had the blinding sun in our eyes for a few hours. Then moved in the north channel of the river, but by then the flights were done. How many decoys do you usually toss? Do you see any canadian geese? Just wondering if I should bring goose decoys next time. Anyway, it was a good trip and have a good idea on what to do. If you have anymore ideas or want to get together up the email me at ffp1711@hotmail.com im

Hunting alamo has been good. Been there three times this year. Limited first time, fell a couple birds short the second time, we tried to hunt some of the bigger coves on the third time. I set up in one cove and my partner set up a few coves over. I shot a double on some gadwalls and those two were the only ones that came in all morning. My partner limited pretty early just a few coves over. We have normally have a pretty good shoot on the far east end in the trees if you like to shoot teal that is the place to be. If you you want mallards, gaddies, shovelers and wigeon concentrate on the bigger brushed up coves or off of a big point. Later in the day you can motor into the coves and brush up throw out a half dozen deeks and a few of the birds you kick up will come back. Make sure you have plenty of line on your deeks. We will be going out next sat. night to hunt the 12th let me know if you want to hook up. Can’t hunt this week got to help the in laws move fun fun fun! #@&^%!!!

Well I shot terrible at those pesky ducks today and was darn near tempted to throw my shells at them!!! Isn’t it amazing when you’re a duck hunter how the thought and action of pouring a cup of joe can bring about small miracles??? Well at 10:30 a.m. that’s what happened to me. I poured, set the cup down and looked up to see 3 big Honkers rocketing in and over my 5 honker floater dekes!!! I hesitated for a few moments and waited for the biggest goose to come back out. Swinging just in front of me 4 to 5 yards out, I connected solidly on the first shot with a Winchester XPERT STEEL 1/8 load of #2’s. I then swung and shot on one of the pair of which had split off but I MISSED!!! I went for the 3rd and last shot going away at about 35 and the gun went C-L-I-C-K!!! But i’m mighty happy with the big Honker I brought home. Regardless of how the rest of the season goes for me, I can sincerely call it complete now!!! Wow what a day at the “Zoo”!!! It was all good(even the W.A.M,’s and the missed easy shots) with Dec. 2nd quality the rule. With my 1st. prime “King Can” and “Bull Sprig” what more could anyone have asked for. Toss in 2 Drake Bluebills landing in “my” 2 Snow floaters and what do I get??? A nice 3 shot(oop,s) double. I counted about 300 ducks today total for our area. At 11:45 the haunting and distinct Her-ronk of the leader of 5 Canadas, direcly above my spread and me, was awesome. They came out of the lake heading North. They had their minds made up about where they were goin’ for sure!!! I was set up by 8:30 in Eric’s Bay and was back at the ramp by 2. Thank you Creator for these majestic days!!! Take care everyone and getcha all some feathers. Chemehuevi Waterfowl Boys Posse – P.S. Just spoke to the Cibola crew and they did a HONKER count this A.M. and it’s over 4,500 and climbing up steady!!! This past Tuesday’s harvest on the Farm Unit#2 was 31 Honkers and 11 more taken yesterday. It will be be a packed house this weekend down at the ol’ “trailer” so Good Luck to those that get “in”!!! And guys, don’t forget breakfast for our dear Mary!!!

And that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone!!! What a North Wind!!! I tallied about 1,000 ducks for our little marshland paradise!!! Of which 300 to 350 ducks, mostly puddlers, were in Eric’s Bay alone!!! I also saw, what I believe to be, the the biggest flock of teal I’ve ever seen. It was about 200 of ‘um!!! Also seen 7 Snow Geese flying near South Park Pt. and 0 Honkers. I set up in Eric’s, after the birds flushed and went outta sight. I threw out 9 dekes waited for about an hour and then the fun of tolling ’em in began. To the tune of 1 D.Redhead,2 Greenheads,1 D.”Robber”, and 2 D.-H. Spoonies, it was my best day hunting alone this season. Today it was cool, calm, and clear and I went to the “Eastwing” of the Horseshoe. Nailed a D. Bluebill and worked a group of 9 Mallards real well. I put the “MOJO” on ’em and coulda shoulda had a “Double”, but did slam a Greenhead on the 2nd round(Thank You Lord). AND THIS JUST IN!!! The count for HONKERS at the Cibola Refuge is a whooping 3,000 and counting!!! I called for the count as they were about to close the hdqtrs. and they told me that 20 Honkers were taken at the Farm Unit #2 today. It seems they have been pouring in since Saturday and I hope to be there next Tuesday with my Cibola Pal Rusty and my “super secret caller” named Trippy!!!??? Only hunted Thur and Fri. this past weekend.
Thursday was OK ended that day with 4 birds, 2 gads, 2 teal. only stayed till 9:30am. Saw good numbers of birds, but not wanting to work. When leaving I went and checked out a spot in the back that I havn’t hunted in a while, but most of the brids were coming across from that driection. I came around the corner and O’man, I found the honey hole. Had a friend down from Ca. for fridays hunt. Got in and the fog was thick. Didn’t burn off till almost 9am. That didn’t matter, the brids wanted to work. Frist flock came in and dropped 4 out of five widgen. Then mallards then teal and then gadwall. Had limits by 10am. But we stayed to get a shot at some geese. Three different times we had snows work the decoys, but just out of range. While waiting on geese we still had ducks coming into the decoys and sitting. Ended the day with 4 wdigen, 4 teal, 3 mallards, 3 gadwall.

As we sat there had two different boats come and check us out. I know thoses guys were fighting over the hole for sat and sun. Thats why I didn’t go back and hunt sat or sun.

The brids are down just have to look and set out the right spread.

Well it finally turned, the wind direction that is. Very s-l-o-w for the whole week for us here around the “Zoo”. Only bright spot was on the 22nd. Duckman Patrick and I scored 2 nice drake Redhaeds apiece out of a flock of 15 that landed in the dekes. Then 2 drake Black Jacks made the same mistake 10 min. later. On the 15th I connected with 2 nice Mallards out of a flock of 11 that ate up the “MOJO”. A half hour later, 2 “Hollywood Mallards” of the female gender bit the water together in 1 shot outta the ol’ 870 Wingmaster “12”. Well the wind is kickin harder now and maybe those “CIBLOA BOUND CANADAS” will check in soon. When I last called there was 300 or so geese. That’s not many. Be safe “out there”,”SWING THAT THING CALLED BARREL”!!!LET’S ALL LOL IN THE WIND,the Chemehuevi Boys Waterfowl Posse—–P.S. A big “BOW DOWN” to the 2 Duckmen Rusty and Erik from “5-Milelandia”” for their awesome performance last Monday(21st) posting FULL LIMITS of Widgeon and Mallards, 2 nice Snows. And I MUST mention that Rusty “kinda” blew 8 Honkers(he shot too soon)!!! Oh well Bro, you’re only human so LOL!!!
