Sordhunter,

As far as I know there are no waterfowling guides allowed in Idaho. With so much of Idaho being public I could see how this would cause problems.

This is a good place to get information on a place to hunt. Problem is its the off season and hardly anyone will post until next season rolls around. I would like to help you but I have never hunted that part of the state. Keep watching though and you might get a response.

Hunting Idaho for ducks 02-21-2006 14:33

Gents,

Just wanted to pick some guys brains here. I live in WA state, and am considering making a trip to the Panhandle area sometime in early season next year to hunt ducks over water.

I’ve heard rumors there are no waterfowl guides (its illelgal) in Idaho– true? Deons’t make sense to me, but thought people here would know.

Any place/person to contact for more info on the hunt I described above?

I know this is not the right area to post this, but I also know how many Ndak’s hunt Sask. Anyway Sask is doing a phone survey of US Residents to determine what the financial impact would be on their economy if they required a guide to hunt Sask. So be prepared to answer this survey if they call you and lets make sure this does not happen

Hey there is a waterfowlers sporting clays shoot at Idaho sporting clays in homedale superbowl sun. morning at 9:00. It’s just a bunch of guys getting togather to shoot clays in teams. Its cheap and alot of fun. You might not like the atmosphere if your a serious shooter, there seems to be alot of heckling take place. Feel free to come shoot with us.

Wonderful end to the season, birds were plentiful but most had seen decoys and few responded to calling. Steady pairs and singles. Teal, Mallards, Gadwall, and Pintail. We observed large feeder flights in the evening headed to the corn. Nice to see these large numbers of birds in our region of the state again.

Great last day! I hunted solo this morning for geese again and shot my limit in the first two flocks. I got one out of the first and tripled on the second flock. It really went by to fast I hardly had time to set back and enjoy it. Then I came home and grabbed my dog and went out to Lake Lowell for an evening duck hunt. I shot a limit of ducks in an hour and a half. Tons of birds around. I jumped what seemed like thousands out of the floating vegitation and set up where they were. Hard to find cover to hide in but the sun was low and at my back so it really helped. It was an excellent season. I ended up with about 120 ducks and 20 geese, plus I shot my first two banded ducks this season in the same day. Lots of great memories made.

5 of us hunted sun. hoping to end the season on a positive note, needless to say it was very poor. We shot 5 greenheads. There were many birds rafted up but very little interested in the marsh. There was definetly a lack of decoying ducks although there were plenty of jackass’s hunting. We had two groups a geese that were working that got sky busted at while working our spread. I guess you cant blame them they were in range……125yds??? I think its time to put down the gun and pick up the steelhead rod.

Same spot again for geese. Clear skies till about noon then the fog rolled in really tight and we packed up. Only saw two ducks all day and we got them both a pair of pintails. The geese were just starting to fly and we got five before the fog came. We flocked the layout blinds and they looked great. The birds never saw it coming. For being late season birds they are still decoying fairly well and responding to calls.

Went out for geese again. The fog really messed up our hunt. It didnt lift till about 1:00 but never lifted completely. We still managed three geese and I got a mouse that kept running around in the snow behind the blinds. That mouse got a load of Kent 3″ 1/8ounce of BB’s going 1560, that will really put a hurt on them at 10 feet! As for ducks we only saw one big group of teal.

Two of us went out for geese today. We saw over a thousand honkers sitting out on the ice. Just a huge magnet that kept the geese from decoying to our spread. Plus the 15-20 mph wind and heavy snow did not help our situation. It was still fun staying out in the weather. We didnt see as many ducks as we have been. People with access to feilds around Weiser should be doing excellent. Also I wanted to say thanks again to the guys who grabbed our bag of G&H floaters off the highway before a semi smashed them. We will tie them down next time.

I hunted this past Saturday and Monday. Saturday I hunted with my buddy. The geese were thick. We shot 6 geese and nine ducks by 10:30. We had a great hunt with birds right in the decoys. We both shot really nice pintails. Monday I got my dad out. He hunts but never duck hunts and has only been out four times. There werent very many geese flying but there were a lot of ducks. First flock was about 30 to 40 birds. I got two and heard my dad shoot once. Four birds fell, he shot a double. He is still bragging about it. I dont think ill ever hear the end of it:) We walked down to retrieve a duck in the ice and had about 25 geese circle right over where our ground blinds were about five times and three landed in the decoys. Oh well it was a fun hunt.

P.S. He admits he flock shot:)

Four of us went out Saturday for a decent shoot. It was really muddy and tough to hunt… we ended up with 20 ducks and a couple geese. We had four flocks of 200-300 ducks drop right in giving us some sweet shoots… Season is winding down, but still gonna try to get a few more hunts in.

Went out for geese again, this time I was by myself. Lots of geese in the area, I also saw a lot more ducks than I have been. I ended up with 3 geese and 3 ducks. I got another really nice drake pintail. I had plenty of chances to get one more goose but I was just never presented with a shot that I wanted to take. I had more chances at ducks too but the times I could have taken shot was while the geese were working the spread. It was a really good day.

I scouted for birds yesterday. I thought that because it was raining the birds would surely be using the fields, needless to say I was wrong. I did see a few geese but next to no ducks. The field hunting went from great to non existent in a week. I was lucky enough to shoot two bands last week field hunting.

Late report but what the heck!!

Hunted geese after Christmas up until New Year’s Day. Unbelieveable Canada Goose hunt!! The river broke and the geese came thick!! One day a group of us shot 18 geese and another day we shot 8. Half the group were kids and they were letting the small calibers roar!! Seemed like everyday there were birds always coming in. The fields were hot and the river was great in the afternoon. Lots of fun and a good way to end my waterfowl season.

Lots of geese flying around. There were some guy in a feild behind me slaying the geese. They would fly up the river and over me to the feild locked up and about 30 seconds later I would here the barrage. The survivors would come back over and head to the south side of the river. I got to set back and watch the whole thing, it was pretty cool. I ended up shooting three drake mallards and one drake teal. There wasnt very much flying at all but the birds that did come by worked right in. I had six goose floaters out but they were totally locked on to the spread in the feild, I might try a big goose spread on the water tommorow.

Well the past week and a half has been off and on for birds. We hunted a corn field 12/23 and slammed the mallards. We had 21 in a short afternoon hunt. We went back out on 12/28 and had a longer, most of the day hunt and shot another 21 and 1 goose. Thur I went and scouted other areas and found one spot that had been a frozen slough now open with quite a few birds. I had an hour and shot 5 ducks and a goose. Sat, 7 of us headed out to CJ and had a really slow day… 15 ducks and 2 geese… not much for working birds. Yesterday, 5 of us went back to the corn field and hunted all day… a very slow day… and shot 12 ducks (1 banded)… as well as 2 specklebellies. With the recent rains and flooding, birds appear to be spending more time in newly flooded and thawed fields. They are more spread out with a definite decrease in birds seen as the days have progressed.

I went out on the Boise River next to Fort Boise this morning. It was raining pretty good the whole time I was there. Pretty good flight in the morning but once they all went out to feed there was hardly anything flying around by 10:00. I drove around and saw huge groups of mallards just setting out in open feilds with there heads tucked down resting. I only shot two birds.

Very foggy this morning. The only ducks that came in were teal and wigeons. I ended up with five over the decoys. There were a lot of geese in the area. I would call them towards me but they wouldnt come down into the fog. I finished my limit by jump shooting and got a really nice drake wigeon, would mount him but I messed him up. I drove up on a bute above the fog and saw quite a few flocks of ducks and geese flying around right above the fog. Tried to go chuckar hunting in the evening but with as much rain and the warmer weather it was impossible to access the spot I tried to get into, the road was all muck.

Very slow saturday. No birds roosted where we were hunting. We didn’t see near as many ducks as we have been. We saw a few high flying groups of mallards and that was about it. Four of us ended up with four birds. The only puddlers we saw going up and down the river were wigeons. We drove down to a strech of the river where the birds always hang out and only saw a small group of goldeneyes. I did see some huge flocks of mallards landing in a corn feild near Melba on sunday.

Saturday was great… 3 of us setup in a cornfield and shot 21 ducks. Big groups of mallards all morning. We ended up with 2 nice pintail and the rest mallards. They decoyed well in groups of 20-50 birds. The overcast made for a nice morning of hunting. Didn’t see more than a few geese. Sunday we thought we’d try our luck again, but we got fogged in. Saturday three of us hunted the snake. While we were setting decoys we jumped tons of ducks and geese off the other bank. We never fired a shot until around 8:00. It slowly picked up and we shot 12 birds by 9:45. Of the twelve, six were greenwing’s, three were wigeons and the other three were mallards. We ended up leaving at around 10:00 and went upland hunting. The three of us all shot limits of quail and we got to chase some wild phesants. All the coveys we saw had at least 50 birds in them. Just one of those good days in the feild.

There are huge numbers of ducks and geese using the river. We jumped thousands of mallards and lots of geese off the river early sat. morning. We shot 28 green heads and 7 geese. The river was open despite some reports of ice. Many of the ducks seems to be heading towards Nyssa to feed but around 10:00 they were back. Whats the deal with the weather it was suppose to be cold, I dont know about the rest of you but I think Rick Lance should quit and stop embarassing himself.

Total learning experience. I have been jetting the river for years but the river beat me today. Had to break Ice to launch then instead of getting on plane and going balls to the wall down river I took it slow, big mistake. I sucked chunks of ice, I would use my rake to clear the impeller but would just suck more. It took us about 30 minutes to limp back to the dock with our tails between our legs.Oh well

Went out by myself this morning. Birds flew pretty good for the first half hour. Then it slowed down, I still was decoying birds by 10:30 but they came in 20 or 30 minutes apart. I saw mostly mallards and wigeons and a few teal. I didn’t shoot so great but I still ended up with a pair of mallards and two nice drake wigeons. I went scouting around 11:30. By noon there were lots of birds in the air. It seemed like there was a huge mid-day flight. I ended up seeing huge rafts of ducks around 1:30. Tomorrow I am planning on staying out late if we dont finish in the morining and hopefully they will do the same thing.

Ditto to jsnesset’s report. Got a couple birds but slow. Lots of ice on the river, which made it an exciting ride in the dark plowing thru floating ice. Had to break thru up to 4 inches of ice on the shore to get into my spot. The cold and the ice may be pushing the birds out. Did not see anything working the fields.

Well, this morning pretty much sucked. Tried to get away from people… but more or less ran into a wad of people at the ramp. There were 6 boats including us at the launch. There were thousands of birds roosting on the river… but when shooting light came around, there was few and far between. We never heard a shot in the first 30 minutes. We only hunted an hour to make it back to work and managed a greenie and a widgeon. We probably only heard 5 or 6 shots in the whole time we were there. …back down river tomorrow…

Hey bwarren… nice post… you never told me you were a coot fan, ha… If so, I guess that means you are hunting by yourself tomorrow :).

I decided to get a membership just to read what you guys are bickering about. I’m looking for a hunting buddy that likes to hunt the snake, I try to concentrate on the coot hunting here in Idaho. I’m not sure why but they get literally no hunting pressure and provide great shooting, they’re also a culinary delight. If any of you have come across large groups and are willing to spill the beans to a beginer the info would be much appreciated. I would also appreciate any tips on getting them to decoy better, they always seem to skirt outside of my decoys. It may be how I’m setting my decoys or calling? Any info would be appreciated

PETA, I may have made a smartass remark but it was not unintelligent. I would like to respond to your comment of me “building up my ego” by listing the number of ducks I have shot. I am probably the least egotistical male you will ever meet, I simply post to try and convey to others the great time my friends and myself had. Thats fine that you would like others to post a more definitve description of where they hunt. I do not believe that you should tell me that I am unintelligent because I do not want you to know where I hunt. I also never said that no one else has ever hunted where I hunt. I simply said that I have never seen any traces of another duck hunter.

Lots of birds on the Snake between Weiser and Grandview… haven’t done much scouting/hunting above that lately. Find spots on the river that are close to fields that the birds are using. This is your best bet. I know of two other groups that went out yesterday on two completely different areas on the Snake and limited. When the weather in the valley gets to the low teens or lower, get to the river. If it’s cold and windy… even better. I post a general location for other people’s benefit… but I won’t say where. If I was to say I was at Marsing and there were 2 gillion ducks… will there be 2 more boats parked at the boat ramp on Saturday?? …Possibly… I don’t want to risk it. If it’s by chance… no problem. I too, use this site for general info i.e. location, success, etc. On the other hand, some locations I don’t mind posting the location… if I fall on the floor and hit my head hard… and decide to go to Ft Boise to hunt… I’ll definitely let everyone know. Sometimes it’s to my advantage… I could say I went to CJ… everyone thinks that’s either Jacks Cr, or Loveridge Bridge… not many people try other areas. How many people knew that there were 10 thousand mallards last year on CJ within site of the dam for several weeks. Obiously very few, since we heard no other shooting. If I would have posted that last year, how could anyone with a boat resist. I know I couldn’t!

With that being said… usually, if I give the location, you can pretty much bet it sucked.

Thanks John-Carter, you seem to have the concept.

DuckCollar, I figured that I would get an un-intelligent response from someone. It was just a suggestion. This is a site for hunting reports. There is no point in reporting if you do not provide the details. Telling us how many birds you shoot in how much time does nothing other than build up your own ego. Look at John-Carters report, did he tell you exactly what spot he hunted? Which island, give the GPS location? No, he did not. I do not hunt in the Wieser area. I do not know it. So even if he posted a great report, I would not go there. I do not hunt CJ or the Boise River either. I have my spots that I know and like to go to just like everyone else does. And I am sure that you have your secret secret spots that only you and the ducks know about that have never been hunted in the entire history of hunting, except by you. So have no fear.

D.C., do as you like, just trying to make this a better site and more useful tool for everyone. I check out the reports from other states around us, Oregon, Washington and Montana, just to see what the birds are doing. Check out their reports, you might learn something.

hunted all morning but the fog got the best of us it did’nt break until 11:30 we got a few though. When the fog cleared and we headed back to the dock we flushed thousands of greenheads off the river there are lots of birds in the area. The small ponds are freezing so the birds have to go to the river for water. Watch out for the fog if you are running the river in the dark and fog.

It would be beneficial to all if everyone would include a little more detail when posting a report. Listing the Snake as the area hunted leaves a lot to the imagination. I know you all think you have the secret secret spot, but with the amount of hunters I see out anymore, I guarantee that you do not. I do not think you have to worry about others rushing into the area either because the percentage of people using this site is very small, or nobody wants to post unless they shoot a limit. The GPS coordinates are not necessary, but listing Idaho Falls, Nyssa, Homedale, CJ…. would be nice so we might know where the migration is at. I believe that is the intent of the site.

River was great this morning. About 17 deg at the boat ramp and about 10-15mph East wind. Lots of birds flying… two of us were done by 9:00 with mallards, pintail, gadwall, and widgeon. The birds were hard to pick out… We had to pass on two large groups because it was hard to pick out the greenies. Really good time…

Saturday was a sweet day. We had a lot birds flying in the area, using fields nearby. Six of us hunted a good portion of the day and ended up with 42 ducks and 1 goose. We weren’t exactly where the birds wanted to be, but close enough to have plenty of small groups to shoot at. We shot mostly mallards and gadwall… a few widgeon and pintail as well. Not very many geese in the area, but the ducks gave us a great shoot. It was the most ducks I’ve seen all season.

Well the ducks would have been in trouble if I could have shot straight! I guess you have your good days and your bad days, cause today I had a very bad day shooting wise. I did end up with three drakes but I should have easily got a limit. My two buddies did good, one limited and the other got five. We had a lot of mallards and wigeons in the decoys. Lots of ducks flying around. As a result of my poor shooting my dog made about a 1/4 mile retrieve down stream after one of the drakes. It was pretty cool to watch. Luckily the drake swam into some slack water in a big bend of the river and headed for shore then I knew it was all over. It was a fun hunt.

We werent in open water. We were in a corn field trying our luck with geese. I came home to help my folks put christmas lights on the house. I decided to take the morning and hunt geese. A friend of mine and I just guessed on a corn field to set up in. We didnt shoot anything. We saw a lot of birds flying from the damm over to the Rupert area. Big groups in hay fields. We took time to jump shoot the canals and limited out on all mallards and a gadwall. We got lucky and only shot two hens. We had a great time shooting the ducks.

Lots of ducks flying before shooting light. Once it got time they were all gone. About 8:30 they were flying everywhere but none of them wanted to decoy. I started packing up around 10:30 to go scouting and a guy hunting near me started decoying them like crazy. He had out a spinner and never touched a call. I saw him decoy five groups of ducks with at least 75 birds in each group. They commited perfectly. Funny though, I never saw him drop a bird. I ended up with a drake mallard, teal and a quail. I scouted a different part of the river I hadnt been to before. There were birds all over. I saw some snow geese sitting on the river also. Going out for chukars tomorrow but sunday ill be down on the river.

So i took some friends out for the afternoon hunt. We had tons of fun. They only shot five birds, but it was a blast. We had so many birds in the decoys that knew how to dodge steel very well. My buddies were laughing and so was I. Two very large groups of teal came right in and they all went righ out. A small flock of 5 mallards came in and two even sat in the decoys. All five mallards, also, went right on out. We had five or six flocks of spoonies come and play with the decoys. We only shot two of those. We started hunting at 1 and left by 430 with out five birds. The other birds that we shot was a mallard and solo widgeon. The shooting performance wasnt very good but what a great time. Happy Hunting. Hey, JSSNET lets get together and hunt sometime!

Hit the Snake on Tuesday morning… we were the only ones in the area. There were snow geese roosted all over the river, which I’d never seen before. The ducks rafted up out in the open water all over the place… probably over a thousand birds. Not much flying, though… we only ended up with six ducks in a short morning of hunting. This morning I’m dying to get out… wind and snow… 4 inches on the ground… the river would be phenomenal…

Well yesterday morning proved a limit of two green heads, One widgeon, one teal, and two spoonies. It was a good hunt. The birds came right in. This afternoon I got off early so I took off to the same area. Tons of new birds out. Tons of spoonies. When I was dressing my birds out the fat on the birds was a lot different from the locals. They must be birds from up North. Anyways, I set about 11 decs out at 4 and I was picking them up by 445. It was a fast hunt. I had a good time. There were a lot of birds. One flock after another of spoonies. I ended up with 4 spoonies and two widgeon. I have one flock of mallards sit on top of me, but i was pulling a downed bird out of the water. I got caught out in the middle. The hunt was fun and the birds were plentiful. Every flock of spoonies that came to the decs all came in. I let a lot of birds go by. It was fun to see birds decoy that well in flocks of 15 to 25 or so. I am off to Burley to go home and help my dad put up the Christmas lights this weekend. I hope to get some geese in while I am down there.

Went out Sunday, Tuesday and today. Not very productive. Got 2 on Sunday, 4 Tuesday and 1 today. Hard to shoot birds that are not there. Not sure where others are getting limits and seeing lots of birds, but I can tell you where they are not. Not much flying, what was flying did not want to decoy. Heard very little shooting.

Did see about 3,000 snow geese Tuesday, which I have never seen around here before, did not see any snow geese today. Saw one flock of honkers for all three days. Coots are thick should anyone want some easy shooting.

Nice to finally see the sun. Saturday winds out of the NW 20-30 MPH. Plenty of birds in the sky few wanting to decoy. Geese have moved into the area with several flocks working the spread. Looking forward to migritory flights later this season.

Happy Thanksgiving! Took my brother-in-law out. Dense fog again. We took 8 birds on a short hunt. We could have got our limits but someone else always has to mess it up. I guess we were in these guys spot and they had to get as close as possible to it. They set up about sixty yards away right at shooting light. They pulled a few birds in with there spinner that I called towards us. Apparently they think a kazoo sounds like a duck. We had a good hunt though. We got mallards and wigeons.

Dense freezing fog was an understatement. Not too many birds moving until 0900 and then they came in flock after flock. Mostly pins with mallards mixed. Did see 2-3 flocks of redheads circling but never came within range. Limited out with 6 drake mallards and 1 pintail drake. Always looking for new areas and hunting partners.

Five of us headed towards CJ on Sunday. It was really foggy. Even though we had some kids set up about 70 yards away right in our shooting lane we still managed to get about 25-30 birds. Almost all were drake mallards with a few hen and two drake gw’s and a hen wigeon. Luckily the wind changed and the ducks were landing over the top of us allowing us some easy shots and it kept the birds from circling out over the kids spread.

There were a fair number of birds moving high in the air. Lots of hunters out this during the morning hunt. Small groups of birds came in and worked awesome to a feeding call on the straights and short and slow quacks on the turns, while the ducks passed. Groups of two and three’s came in. Didnt take very long to limit out. Got one Canadian to come down and take a look. Shot him dead.

Hit a corn field for pheasants in the afternoon. If I could shoot straight I would have shot my three birds in the first 20 minutes of the hunt.
