hey rustyduck,

i am going to start hunting the havasu area and i just wanted to get some info on the area from you. where do you launch from. are the launch ramps paved or dirt. how far do you have to travel from the launch area to get to the hunting areas.
are there any closed areas i would need to watch out for. what size/mix of spread are you putting out. how deep is the water in most of the areas you hunt. from your posts it seems you have some great afternoon hunts out there are the afternoon hunts usually productive. are there many other hunters out there. maybe we could put a hunt together and you could show me around.

The ducks are here!!! It’s cold and windy. My 7:15 arrival into Eric’s Bay was very rewarding!!! 4 Greenheads, 3 Gadwalls, and 1 Snow Goose. I shoulda/coulda had a limit of Snows and only God is my witness to my shooting follies. 1 flock of 5 and 1 flock of 4 equals 9, right??? Well i could only subtract 1(good grief) and they were all “very much in range!!!” My duck shooting made up for all that very well!!! Posseman Rambo and I are gonna team up and shoot it out wit’ dem birds manana!!! Sack time is NOW. Happy Hunting To All, Rusty and the “Posse”

THIS NOVEMBER WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS OVERWHELMING!!! FROM SHOOTING DUCKS & SNOWS/ROSS’S HERE AND “LANDING SNOWS” UP IN THE TOPOCK MARSH, TO HARVESTING HONKERS AT CIBOLA. WITH SO MANY THRILLS AND OF COURSE THE USUAL SPRINKLE OF “IF ONLY’S,” AND SHOUDA/COULDA’S, HOW COULD THE “POSSEMEN” ASK FOR MORE??? CONGRADULATIONS TO POSSEMAN CUZIN MARIO ON HIS CIBOA HONKERS(Cuz’s 1st Honker on the 2nd day). WITH PLENTY OF “SPIRITUAL MOJO,” OUR LITTLE SPREAD OF OUTLAW DECOYS, 2 BIGFOOT FEEDERS AND MY 11 Y.O. SON RIO HARMONIZING WITH ME ON HIS “WING LOCK” HONKER FLUTE CALL, WE CALLED IN A FAIR AMOUNT OF HONKERS FOR OUR AREA OUT OF BLIND #6. SOME HUNTERS IN THE PITS BEHIND US HARVESTED THEIR SHARE OF BIRDS THAT RIO & I HAD BROKE DOWN FROM HIGH ABOVE. IT WAS THRILLING AND OH SO BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH AS THE BIG BIRDS BROKE FORMATION AND DROPPED DOWN WITH “FULL FLAPS” AND TALKIN’ BACK!!! WE LOVE TO CALL AT AND “WORK IN” HONKERS AT CIBOLA AND SON RIO JUST MISSED HIS FIRTST HONKER, AGAIN!!! THEIR IS ABOUT 1500 OR SO HONKERS(AS OF yesterday) AT CIBOLA AND THEY ARE STEADY TRICKLING IN. CONGRATS GOES TO DUCKMAN SHANE ON HIS DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING HONKER, HE SHOT. IT’S THE ONLY CANADA GOOSE HARVESTED(OR SEEN) DOWN HERE ON OUR END OF THE MARSH, SO FAR THIS YEAR. I’M TOLD DUCK HUNTING IS FAIR AROUND HERE AT THIS TIME WITH WIGEON, MALLARD AND CANVASBACKS BEING BAGGED. DUCKMAN LEO HAS BEEN “HANGIN’ OUT” ALOT AT ERIC’S BAY AND HE HAS BEEN WELL REWARDED. THAT PLACE IS JUST “LEGENDARY”!!! SO MUCH MORE DETAILS AND SO LITTLE TIME TO TYPE ‘CAUSE RIO & I GOTTA LOAD THE BOAT AND GO GET US SOME MORE FEATHERS AND MEMORIES. BE SAFE OUT THERE, THE SWING IS THE THING, AND HAPPY WATERFOWLIN’ TO ALL – Rusty, Rio, Drake, and the “Posse”

I drove down to Picacho thurs last week to check it out as it held some water about 4-5weeks ago. No water now but, millions (make that billions) of mosquitos. Everytime we would get out of the truck we would get swarmed.

“When your hot your hot, when your not, your not” ro so the song goes!!! The north wind hit at 11:00 a.m.. My 6 y.o. son Drake and I finally got out of the house at 11:30. We scooted out due east across the lake to the “South Park ” water blind. With our 6 Snow goose decoys “swimming” about at 20 yards, we were ready. 40 minutes later, 3 white geese approach from out of the south, glide gently into my tiny spread, and only 6 ft. off the water!!! I hammer one, then hammer another, and then MISS the 3rd goose!!! Drake & I are ecstatic!!! Turned out it was 1 Ross and another Snow. Our hunt turned out to be VERY short and sweet. We picked up and came home to celebrate. Back at it for “Sunrise Service with Cuzin Mario, somewher at this awessome “Zoo”!!! Be Safe and the “Swing is the thing!!!” Rusty, Rio, Drake, and the C.V.W.Posse

A new wave of birds moved in Tusday so I went at them on Wed. alone. Went scouting and then went into “Golden Pond” for the 1st time in 5 or 6 years. Scratched 1 Greenhead and 3 Teal. and should have had a couple more Mallards but, I got W.A.M.ed!!!At 2:15 Had about 35 Snows come in from outta the south and as lady luck would have it, I left those dekes at home!!! They circled me twice and were bout 150 yard s up and were talkin to my spead loudly. So Thursday I set-up at the top of Jude’s Chute with 6 Snow dekes and a few assorted duck spieces and the MOJO. I whacked 2 Snows, 2 Wigeon, 3 Spoonies, and 1 Greenhead. At 11:15 the Snows came from outta the South, again. I started calling to them as they flew directly due East of me. I had two big Snows peel off of a group of 15 and land in the Snow dekes at 20 yards. I was shaking so bad with excitement as I had 3 flocks of ducks(wigeon & Spoonies) zooming in and all around me, as I was callin’ and working the snows into gunning range. WOW, WOW , WOW what a thrilling hunt!!! Oh thnk you GOD ALMIGHTY, for such a wonderful day of forever lasting memories!!! Friday I went to the “Horseshoe” for the 1st time this year and managed to bag I Greenhead, 1 Susie(OOP’s), and a Spoonie. Not a bad week for out here in the the lil Hava-Zoo N.W.R.!!! Have a safe and sucessful wknd all you waterfowlers!!! Rusty and the “Posse”

Well Tues. & Wed. Duckman Jeff and I were at Jude’s Chute for a 5 bird, 2 Mallards, 3 G.W. Teal total. Today had son Rio and I at Arrowhead Flat. No wind, high wispy clouds, and not much flying. We seen 7 mallards go into the wedge about 8 a.m., about 15 Redheads(just out of range) going north about 10:30, 3 teal about 12:15, and about 35 big ducks diving into the closed zone north of Castle Rock at 12:40. We left at 1:00. The water is very high here and it is making things tough. 25 years ago and up into the mid ’90’s, the water would come down by early Rocktober. Backwaters would recede to ideal lower water levels whereby ponds would be formed. Sandbars would be exposed and goose decoys could be set-up and the goose hunt would be on!!! Oh well, i’ll jus’ keep my finger’s crossed that the water comes down very soon and be happy and grateful for all that “we” have here on the mighty Colordo River!!! Be safe and sucessful all you fellow waterfowlers,

Well third time is a charm!!! Sunday mornin’ Cuzin Mario shot his 1st limit of 7 ducks and he did it with ONLY 7 shots!!!I harvested 4. Mallards(4), Cinn.(2) and G.W. Teal(2), Spoonies(2), and 1 Widgeon was the harvest. Why do you think I call this place, Hava-Zoo!!! Not alot flying but what did decoyed well. This time we were at the nend of Jude’s Chute. Spoke to 3 other hunters who were scouting around. I was aquainted with one of them, Kevin, they had shot 1 Greenhead for their morning. He also said his pal and him had limited out on opening day at Eric’s Bay. This was our/my all time best, 3 days of an opening wknd., of hunting ever, in 26 years!!! Total: 31 ducks in 3 mornings!!! Happy hunting to all, Rusty and the “Posse”

Did some scouting today. Water levels are really down. Suprising! for all of the monsoons we have had. Did not see many ducks. Only one spot was holding about 250-300. Mallards, gadwell and teal.
Morman Lake is down from last year. Did enjoy the 1000 head of Elk standing in the middle of the almost dry lake. Did see a couple of boomers!!!!!
Also saw four nice muley’s near ashurst.

looks like an earlier migration than expected ,waterfowl are already on the move southward towards mexico ,i was in topok last weekend and black ibis ,pitail and a few teal that are probably locals were already flying in in good numbers in the area
no early geese or mallards bvut sizable flocks of pintail saw 6 flocks from 50 to 200
flying in early morning sunlight ,i wouyld say theat more are passing through there like every year so ,we`ll be a little short on the big flocks again if you want to shoot them go to mexico they` are already moving out fast

jack on the rocks,…..thanks for your expertise ….it’s interesting also to note about the mallard, widgeon, pintail and honker migration…..there used to be state of california authorized “feed clubs” that allowed for the registered duck clubs to place shelled feed in a 40 acre closed zone for the birds…..this was established to allivate the crop problems that the birds were doing to the lettuce fields….the farmers changed their crops from lettuce, and the lettuce farmers moved south across the border to mexico….but the state still allowed for the feed clubs…the pintail especially flocked to the feed clubs for the barley and shelled corn (the clubs that feed these feeds) and the state and federal government kept “tabs” on the activity…Mass also allowed the feed clubs because california allowed them and the feds jumped to put both out of business…monitoring of the species for five years produced that the feed clubs actually held more birds in the flyway from going down south of the border; and these mexican people, with their 25 pintail limit, demanded california’s closure…the results of the clubs also indicated that the widegeon actually preferred shelled corn (late in the season) to their grassy diet, but early in the season they were insect eaters and rotting potatoes yielded the best for this…pintails liked barley, mallards liked barley early and corn late, and the honkers preferred corn once the weather got below 36 degrees; but they also needed grit and extremely clean water…..the japanese millet that the clubs planted in lue of the feed club status never replaced their diet and the birds overflew into the brawley and mexico area…brawley corn growers had exceptionally great shooting and grew special corn that was short stemmed corn that matures 24 inches from the ground, and is an excellent crop for ponds that would flood 18 inches of water….birds stayed at the salton sea to nest, and went back and forth to cibola in large numbers….once the food cycle was cut, your right, the widgeon, etc. have very little reason to stop at cibola….the large corn fields planted at cibola, without being knocked down to allow the birds to feed, are basically useless until the stems rot and the crop falls to the ground…..a local nesting flock (s) would help solve the hunter’s interest and also the birders that use them for photography, etc……according to some of the old timers that hunted in southern california and cibola…there were days that you could see thousands of honkers trading back and forth all day long….baldwin lake by big bear has a story published in the 1950’s, I believe, that tells of hunters taking about 500 mallards (total number of ducks taken by lots of hunters) per day off of the two lakes almost continually (?) as the influx of migration passed through this area from bishop south, the colorado river west, and los angeles west to east….could these days ever come back?…probably not in huge numbers; but in numbers that would allow for waterfowl hunters to remain interested in hunting and not have such a huge dropoff in numbers each year of many hunters just “hanging it up”…some people would like to see a “push” to bring back waterfowl hunters that have quit because of lack of bird numbers and expense, instead of the fish and game’s push to try and bring in 20 or so new “green wings” into the waterfowl hunting fold at each state hunting refuge…..there’s lots and lots of hunters that have given up; more than can be replaced with new younger greenwings for many years….suggestions?

ssm,
what you are saying is probably 100% correct ,and also with the geese that move in from western alberta are getting to where they might be using those same areas and moving east again with the hunting pressure that does move them it might not be enough to steer them from their natural nature ..in response to widgeon delima ,widgeon need grassy ,thick vegetation as i`m sure you already know ,but the colorado river at cibola really only offers them a place to stay while moving south .lets say that the widgeon a hearty bird that can withstand extreme cold but doesn`t like to has an food forage problem in cibola not a food shortage problem as far as the eye could see when i first started hunting down there they had a terrible amount of them also pintails too
but through the years its been alost all of the bags i`ve been havesting are full of widgeon ,and with the mallard population at a slow slope as of last year i think were going to see more geesemigrating south …
have the geese getting into larger flocks on the move down and then breaking up well there you have a creature of habit that finds safety in numbers .fact.i like this converesation salton sea man ,we should talk geese someday, sound like a goose hunter .

Thank you for your response Jack on the Rocks…..more and more of the geese are also nesting northeast of salt lake too…..all of the areas that the birds molt in have an early honker season and some believe that this has altered their migratory pattern; with the young birds quickly becoming educated in “which way to safety”…and that seems to go into the central flyway and movement of the pacific flyway…..I don’t understand why the hunters and conservation groups in the salton sea and the cibola refuge don’t insist that a local flock be raised there?…there are lots of surplus geese, even the maximum species that are killed each year because there’s not areas to place them into….having a moriturum(spelling) on a nesting species for five years or so would reallly benefit the areas (bringing in the larger species and not hunting them….or just bring them in and limit the hunting on them…there’s plenty of room at both locations for nesting islands and the crop deperdation that used to occur in the late 60’s is gone from the farms; relating to the geese and even the widgeon….comments?

the geeses just don`t want to go there and thats all they have been showing up in larger numbers in new mexico as you were saying.I think the reason that the geese arennn`t coming down this flyway is becuase a lot more of them that travel from salt lake are staying and wintering in ponds and small resivoirs before they make it down and don`t have to fly south. Also that would be good for cibola as a hunter in that area they should have someting like that but that also means more closed areas and i don`t think that it sells many licenses.thats what you will be looking at in the future of the sport down there the more geese that stay
the more interest and so forth .As tghe geese move out hunters loose interest , and i didn`t really get a chance to see the numbers on martinez lake and the imperial areas but i do know that topok is normally holding up to 1000 geese a yaer and they do blow south and they pass the crit and i assume that they turn there and head for the salton sea .

gentlemen, did anyone else read the waterfowl report from the Pacific Flyway Council about the rocky mountain population of the western canada geese that used to winter in the cibola area…and now is wintering in record numbers in New Mexico the past two years?…it’s on their web site…also, some say that because of the early canada goose season by the molting areas of this species, the extra hunting is causing the birds to fly “too early” into new flight patterns that don’t have hunting…if this isn’t corrected perhaps the flyway number of geese in the cibola area will continue to decline to the 700 or so that was there in the late 70’s????anyone have any comments?…why not have nesting areas for the geese in the cibola area and let some of the flock “overstay and nest”?….

Hay Ho All, It’s 11 days into the New Year. My how waterfowl and Time fly by. On Mon. eve. Rambo, Rio, and I slipped into Eric’s Bay and a crisp North wind was blowin’. I was very excited for my son Rio who was gifted a neat little ol’ Sears, Roebuck, and Co. Mod.21 20 Ga. Pump-action. With double-action side bars, 21 1/2 in. plain barrel, 3 inch chamber and a trigger to end of recoil pad length of 12 inches, whew this gun is almost too cool for Rio!!! Anyway we pulled out at sundown and were all happy with the 1st ducks of the New Year. 1 drake and 1 hen Redhead and 1 beauty of a 60 yard shot by Rambo on a long-tailed drake Pintail. Overall, the water is way up everywhere, and there are not many ducks anywhere in our “zone” at this time. The Honker count is still at 1 or 2. With temps at 70 degrees it’s too nice out here. Looks like the Posse will have to saddle up and ride hard North, to the Mighty Topock Marsh, and hunt up where dem waterfowl might be hangin’ out at. The weather looks very promising for the weekend and I know some of the Posse are itchin’ to draw at the “Slough” on Saturday. It was reported to me that Duckman Dave East and pal harvested 14 birds last Sat. or Sun. at the “Slough”. A big HIGH 5 to you guys!!! That’s the latest from the Castle Rock/Rez Zone. Be safe out there and good shootin’ to all, Rusty and the Chemehuevi Valley Waterfowl Posse

Gentlemen, thank you for your comments……the areas west of the refuge that I was told were “good to hunt” were: the area north of Walter’s camp called three fingers lake, and the unnamed lake on the west side (california side) south west of the cibola lake overlook; about 5 miles away ?????….sound familar to anyone???? is the marsh unit worthwhile in the refuge itself?…..anyone have an idea why the bird count is so low for the refuge????

Saltman you can hunt the river north of the refuge but the geese dont fly past the refuge. Hunting the hokers have been slow this year. I hunted on the west side and had a good day on ducks. The Az side is tough due to the refuge and private property. Farm uint has been slow and have been posting low numbers. You can take a chance and do stand by. If you do try pit 9 or pit 3. Pit 9 get first crack if they head over the farm unit. But as I said low goose count makes it tough.

Hey Ho Salton Sea Man, You may want to talk to a fellow waterfowler named Ron Gober – San Diego Hunting Retriever Club, Chula Vista, Ca.. He has a TON of hunting experience in the Cibola area. Go to google.com for more info.. I have only hunted the Farm Unit 2 for the past 10 years and that is what my son Rio and I like to do there. Ron Gober was a guide in the Cibola area for years. Rick Francis is a well known guide and a good guy, who operates Ultimate Guide Service, maybe he can advise you(928-857-3581) you. Good Luck, Rusty and the Chemehuevi Valley Posse

Haven’t been at Cbiola if a few weeks. The last time I was there was for 11 days during Thanksgiving. Huntung was slow but one day I had a good shoot. Six Mallards and ring neck.
Has anyone been that way lately? Im thinking about heading back.

Yesterday’s Wine(the song) and yesterday’s hunt are a sweet memory. I pulled into the “Horseshoe” at sunrise and got things set-up. The 1st. hour went by with 2 flocks of about 10 Mallards in each one heading North and staying well out of range. At 8:15 coming in low to the water and out of the South, a line of ducks were beaming into me. At 80 yards or so they landed and started to swim on in. With my peeps and whistles they came charging in, about 15 of ‘um. At 30 yards I stood up and hollered cut ‘um. Up went the ducks and up came the ol’ 870. 3 shots later, 5 drake G.W. Teal were floating on the, water, D.O.A.. Tasty Teal. Need I say more. Once again, one flock can make a huge difference. Not much else moved and I was a bit surprised with the weather so ducky. I was finished at high noon. Oh well days like that happen. The “posse”, son Rio, and I should be at Gander Flats this evening and Rambo needs to to make up for lost time at the ‘zoo. The “posse” will be out in force with the weekend weather looking promising and cold things going on up North. So saddle up, lock and load Gent’men and remember, “it’s not how many you get, it’s how you feel about the ones you do.”!!! Be safe “out there”, Rusty and the “Posse”

I did alot of scouting yesterday and there are alot of patos locos here. They are scattered around everywhere. King Cans in Catfish Bay,Redheads/Bluebills/Widgeon at Dog Cove.Mallards/Gadwalls/Blackjacks at Jude’s Chute, Mallards at the “360”, Buffle Heads,Golden-Eyes, Green-Wing Teal everywhere it seems. I set-up for 2 1/2 hours after the scouting run at “South Park” point. One fat drake Redhead and 2 Gadwalls make for a fine morning for this blessed hunter. So get out there while the gettin’s good guys. With wings locked and landing gear down, Rusty and the “Posse”

Hello Waterfowler’s, My last 2 submissions didn’t post up. Oh well, the ducks and geese are co-operating well here and “dat’s a beautiful thing”!!! Out 3 times since last Sat., I total 2 Ross Geese, 3 Greenheads, 3 Widgeon, 2 Gadwall, 2 G.W. Teal, and 1 “Smiling Hollywood” duck. Thursday was PRIMO. I seen at least 500 ducks and 11 big Honkers buzzed me going South, a little out of range, just as 5 Greenheads came skidding in next to the Snow dekes. I hammered a double in one shot. 4 ducks by 7:15 Az. time, how nice. My 1st. limit day BY 8:55 and life is good in REMINGTON COUNTRY(my 870 12ga.is 33 y.o.)!!! Gentlemen, does anyone have an individual person to contact at the tribal office that may be interested in adding wetlands to the tribal lands? (at no expense to the tribe, and an additional income source)…I’m Native American myself , and have dealt with trying to help other tribes with conservation and recreational grants, etc. , but it is very hard to get anything done (achieved) without an actual great spokesperson at the tribe that wants change???….are the fish ponds being constructed, or distructed?…or whatever???orginally a couple of years ago someone told me that the area adjacent was going to be converted to wetlands…or the fishponds were????thru a governmental grant to see if the honker population could be re buildt up, since they are being killed in large numbers in the early season hunts in the states to the north….any success on the crit reservation for anyone lately?…I haven’t been there in about five years….hunted the south ranch, by CIbola refuge; but it’s pricey; but set up very, very good….really nice people that run the operation

SAW A FEW LARGE FLIGHTS OF MALLARDS ON SOME FLOODED AREA’S WAY SOUTH ALMOST TO THE END. NOT ANY GEESE, SAW 2 HONKERS 11 SNOWS. SOUTH RIVER WAS FULL OF MIGRATORS. ALL GONE ON SUN.PICKED UP A FEW QUAIL SAT. AND SUN. GUESS WE HIT THE CRIT GRAND SLAM. 13 GUNS FOR THE WEEKEND.

Well Quack Quack To All, These are the “highlights” from these parts since Nov. 19th.. Sat the 19th, Posse member Duckman “Wisco” Joe bagged his first Havazoo refuge Honker(a loner) with a lil’ help of Duckman Shane’s “goose talkin” ability. Way to go guys!!! Wednesday seen Cuzin Mario and I go to 5-Mile Landing and out to the “middle grounds” for some Snow goose action. At about 9:35, 3 Honkers came swingin’ by us 4 feet above the water and just out of range. I hit them with the T.G. “Half-Breed” and that pulled them back the way they came in and they landed on the water about 200 yards out in front of us. About an hour went by and they finally flew into the closed zone. At 1:15 we heard the Snows come back in from the valley. At 4:20 a single Snow came “over the line” high and I worked my Illusion Snow call to convice that snow to pile in and it did. We both missed it from 15 to 30 yards 5 times!!! Finally “Cuzin Mario” lit that Snow up at 65 yards with a round of new Federal “ULTRA SHOCK” #2’s. That’s his 1st. Topock Marsh Snow. We got a a good lookin over by a group of 3 Snows and a group of 6 Snows, too. We saw only a small handfull of ducks all day but we had a great time anyway. The wind finally hit here Sat. afternoon and that sent me to Eric’s Bay on Sunday, late of course, for the 1st. time this season. At 9:30 2 Drake G.W. Teal landed and never left(Citus Splash marinade bound). I had 2 flocks of “mixed ducks”, numbering about 50 or so, land out of range within minutes of each other. Oh well there is nothing like a good back-to-back W.A.M.!!! At 12:30 I saw 3 Snows(5 Snow dekes out) going S to N, up the Az. shoreline. They had their mind’s made up as to where they were goin’. Yesterday I went to the “Horseshoe” and plowed a Drake Redhead(my 1st. this season) with a headshot at about 50 yards out. WOW, how I cease to amaze myself at shooting time!!!??? A short while later 2 Honkers snuck in on me about 100 yards up and going S to N while I happened to be standing up in the boat fixing the camo. About an 1 1/2 hr. later 20 or so G.W. Teal W.A.M.ed me very suddenly at 15 yards. And jus’ like dat, gone in 1/2 a blink of an eye!!! Be safe “Out There” and give the ol’ “rabbit’s foot” a rub for luck, Rusty and the Chemehuevi Waterfowl Posse

hunted nw out of catfish. Ended up with 1 drake wigeon, 1 greenhead, 1 teal, 1 hen wig, 1 shoveler and two crips(that sucks) off a pretty small spread. Missed a few birds must be a litte rusty. Might try and go with a big spred next week (snows and honkers included) After 9am birds shut off in our area but the guys up north were still shooting. Had for snows come by but we had did not have any snow deeks out. Turned them around with the call but with no white in the spread we could not finish them. Two flights of honkers on got up off the water as we headed back too the ramp, never did see them fly by earlier that morning wonder if they were sitting out there all morning? Thanks for the info on crit and havasu maybe we will see you out there in the future.

My friend from Lake Havasu called me as I was on my way out to CRIT last weekend to turn me on to a field on the reservation that was holding 1000’s of birds, so we changed our plans and decided to put Topock off another day & try to find this field in the morning. We found a field in the general area that was holding a couple hundred birds, however , all but 3 of them were pintail, which are a no take this year on the reservation. So we headed out to the river & still took 7 birds from 8 -11 am. 3 mallards, 3 widgeon & a gw teal. The following morning we headed north, following a thunderstorm all the way, to Topock Marsh & put the 2 boats in at PIntail Landing. Ended up with only one shot all morning…a hen pintail, so we bailed out around 10 back to Parker. We hunted a small Island in the river down near the diversion dam on Saturday for 5 more birds, 1 mallard 1 gw teal & 3 widgeon, but the water came up so high & so fast that we had to get out of there around 9 am & still filled my hip boots with water. We saw lots of new birds to second what Rusty is seeing, mostly widgeon & pintail, but a few ringnecks are starting to show also. went out in the afternoon & took a couple dove & a couple quail. There are more dove & quail on the reservation than I’ve ever seen in November, so if the ducks don’t cooperate, you can always go get ya some dove & quail!

As far as some of the questions asked about Crit, we hunt the river sometimes, the backwaters others, and the fields & canals still others. You really have to put the miles in scouting to find the birds there & figure out their patterns. When you stumble upon their hideout, it can be awesome, but most of the time 1-2 birds apiece is a very good day for us. After 20 + years of hunting there, we have a pretty good fix on the local Mallard population & kill quite a few of them early in the season, but once they get on to us…it gets tough. After that, It’s mostly divers & widgeon until some new birds arrive in mid-late December. Hope this helps. I’m heading back out either Tues or Weds this week . Later Rembo

Hey Ho Skeeterbait, Evenings can be challenging, for this place is part of the “Migratory Freeway”. The past 25 years hunting here for me, have been a riot and I’ve experienced it all(I Thank God)!!! It depends on the “flow of the birds movin’ through”. You shoulda if you coulda, been here all of last week!!! Anytime is a good time to hunt here in the “anytime refuge”!!! Where are you out of(home), and do you know that garlic(works on vampires) fends off those pesky skeeters!!! We did the “Horseshoe’ this a.m. and Cousin Isaac(13yrs.) is now an official “Posse Member” with his 1st. Drake Widgeon(dang Robber). Son Rio and I teamed up and did an awesome job on calliing in that “Robber” from across the ‘shoe into 15 yard, “Red Your Dead Zone”. BEAKING NEWS – Duckmen Joe and Leo got into the the birds at Eric’s Bay. Bluebills, a Susie, Teal, and Redheads for a total of 9. Nice going guys!!! Happy Hunting to all, Rusty and the “Posse”

Are any of you from the White Mountains? I was hunting in Showlow last weekend with my 11 year old and we saw very few ducks, except on the city lakes (i.e., Rainbow Lake). I’m wondering if the snow that Idaho just got this week has helped bring northern Arizona some new birds. If anyone knows, I sure would appreciate some input. Thanks, DW.

Well if you all could have been here Thursday morning, then you would feel the way I still feel NOW!!! On Wed. night my 1st. cousin and mine’s youth flag football team, WON the Needles, CA. Recreation Dept, Co-Ed Flag Football League (10-0) and the Tournament Final Championship Game (back to back wins that night, 12-0). WOW talk about Cloud 9. Then it’s off to the blind (still celebrating) at 4:00a.m. to an awesome show of a “baby Grand Passage”!!! What a Show!!! Out of the 1,000 or so ducks we saw that day, I managed to stop 4 from venturing south any further. 2 greenheads, 1 G.W.Teal, and 1 purdy Robber. But oh those flocks and flocks that were heading only where they and GOD know!!! Flocks of 50, 30, 75, and 100 of Pintail, Mallards, Redheads, and Widgeon. It was something to behold. It’s days like that which are a Big part of why I do Waterfowlin’ as much as I can and do, thank God Almighty. “Y’ALL GETCHA SOME FEATHERS”, I did!!! Rusty and the Chemehuevi Waterfowl Posse P.S. Took son Rio out yesterday a.m. and put a Gadwall and a “Smiling Hollywood” (x-tra garlic and cheese please) in the Citrus Splash “Itellyun” dressin’ (no pun intended, I’m part Southern Pasta Paiute) marinade for the next mesquite BBQ.

REmbo, on the crit reservation….do you only hunt the river?….are there areas of the river that are shallow and allow one to wade out and place decoys?….are there sandbars that are walkable to?….do the honkers overfly the crit reservation on the way south?….any truth yet to the “rumor” of the wetlands (fish ponds) being allowed to hunt on (north end of reservation I was told?)….thank you for you comments…

Hey Ho Waterfowlers, Well I somehow managed to “rescue” Duckman Rusty from 5 Mile Landing and get him with new pup, Hunter(so original that Rusty), to my waterfowl haven. On the morning of the 27th we “motored” on over to the Horseshoe and set-up. There was not alot flying but, Rusty shot well and bagged 4 Mallards (2 Susie’s, dag nabbit and darn you Rusty)and a gadwall. It was his best shoot ever with me, on my “home turf”!!! Hunter the pup, performed very well and he is going to bring us alot of birds and joy. Yesterday I hunted 3/4 of the day with “Duckman Eric the Viking”. Eric and his new pup “Fisher”(yuck what a name for a Yellow Lab), managed 1 Gadwall and 2 hen Spoonies. I scratched my 2nd. Greenhead of the season and missed another. We got W.A.M.ed by a flock of about 10 Widgeon, but that’s huntin’. I had to rename “Fisher” to a more female canine of a name, so her NEW name now is “Sara Lee”(nobody doesn’t like…). The pup did o.k. and she is sister to Hunter. They both came from Ron Gober Kennals. Oh when, oh when will we all ever see, those frigid Arctic blasts and Siberian Express’s, the way it used to be???!!! Be safe out there and ya’ll getcha some feathers, Rusty and the Chemehuevi Waterfowl Posse

HAVASU NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE 11-01-2005 15:55
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
a friend of mine spoke with the head of the havasu wildlife refuge and they found something on a website somewhere saying that you cannot use any air cooled motors in the havasu refuge. he is working on somebody in washington to try to get it overturned but it will probally take an act of congress. they say that the air cooled motors tear up the vegitation. i do not see how they are any worse than a prop motor being that the mud buddy prop sits 6″ under the surface and a conventional 2 stroke prop sits 1ft to 1.5ft under the surface. maybe they are worried that the stumps out at topock will flourish into trees again. they also said that the motors were too noisy and people would be driving around kicking up birds. no matter what type of motor you have the birds will get up and fly when you drive by. all the mud buddy motor is hyped up lawnmower. all they are doing is hurting the rest of the law obiding hunters by creating these bogus rules. they should be out in the field (not he boat ramps) going after people who tear up the habitat and stretch the rules. but what do i know i am not a federal biologist. i am just a man trying to enjoy my god given right to hunt. maybe they will pass a law where you can’t use a 4×4 vehicle to hunt big game because you might go a little further than a 2wd. so all you guys out there who invested the money on a new mud motor or mud boat don’t worry about getting it dirty this year if you planned to hunt the havasu refuge. don’t hesitate to voice your opinion to the managers of the refuge either. maybe we can make a chAnge. CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?

Few local Birds in the a.m. just at shoot time. Little to no birds working after that. Keep a small spread out with 1 mojo. Dog was happy to work off summer fat. Will need a cold snap up north to see new birds Here. Federal bird and Game stoped and reported to us that we could no longer use the Mudbuddy motor on the Marsh? They said that it was the law yet I have not read it yet. Looks like it will be up to the 2 strokes this year. Other friends on the marsh reported the same A/M type conditions.******Flew over Lake Alamo 10/15. Water level seemed to be a little lower than last year. Reports of nails and other debrie on the road to Lake Alamo from hwy 40. Hunter reported 5 flats and called for help and the help flattened 3 more. Bring all the spares, You’ll need em! Will hunt there this week and report conditions.

Hello To All, Well I got out for 5 hrs. yesterday a.m.. I got W.A.M.’ed by a drake Pintail as I was loading up, a drake Greenhead that jetted by me as I blinked, and a hen Gadwall which flat fooled me by surpise. I did manage(finally) to get 3 shots at the leader of about 15 pintails that responded real well to my calling. Of course I missed at 30 yards!!! DAG NABBIT!!! I worked another flock of about 20 Pins for a bit but they were a lil’ wiser. Another limit of memories but no birds in the bag. That’s waterfowlin’!!! Anyway, I ran across a Hungarian Partridge hunters’s poem titled “Tell Me”. This poem was featured and recited towards the end of a “Grey’s Sporting” t.v. show on O.L.N.. I love the last sentence of this poem. It goes like this, “Bad habit’s(shooting) grow sweeter with Age”! Be safe and “Getcha Some Feathers”!!! Rusty and the “Posse”

Hello To All, Well Sat. mornings hunt was a great time had by all. And all means 5 year old Drake Reed, who earned his first pre-dawn arrival to the blind at the n/e corner of the “Horseshoe”. He did very well and even managed to irratate his brother Rio while having fun with the tip of a bamboo foxtail. The first action of the morning began at about 8:10 when 3 mallards came diving in as I was “dancing in the decoys”. You see, someone had put those purdy orange legs/feet of the mighty Mojo on “backwards”!!! That sure didn’t stop Duckman Dave from nailing a brace of a drake/susie combo. His first wild Mallards of his beginning waterfowlin’ life. CONGRATS big Dave!!!. He followed up with another drake Mallard about a half hour later. 3 more came in and 2 got away. 45 min. later 4 G.W.Teal “snuck in” at about 30 yard out. When the barrels came up, the steel flew. What a barrage!!! I’m happy to report that I shot first this time and got on the scorecard(finally) with a single teal. As for the other 3, they flew away of course!!! Breakfast was timely and Drake loved his bacon, eggs, and taters in the blind. When he got home and seen his mother he told her “I’m a Duck Hunter mom”!!! It surely was a day we/I will never forget. As for Rio, he shot a little too soon on a drake Mallard that was honing in on the spread. Nice try Rio, you’ll get one next time!!! It’s late and morning comes too soon at this time, Rusty and the Chemehuevi Waterfowl Posse

I can’t believe it’s 11:50 4 hr.10 min. until son Rio, Duckman Dave(west), and I rise again to greet the sun and the wildfowl. This a.m. was great!!! We rose, we got out, we set-up, we shot, we missed, we hit, and we ate(Blach-Skilleted bacon, “Mystery Mix ” seasoned potatos, and Cheesy eggs). YUMMY!!! Results: Duckman Dave nailed a nicely decoyed drake Balpaitus and Rio followed about 30 min. later with a colorful drake Gadwall. As for me, I had to two great opportunities and missed’. They were too close!!! Honest!!! LOL!!! What a way to start the season !!! So today it was, “Not about how many I harvested, but how I felt about the ones they harvested”!!! Life is good. Thumbs Up To You All, Rusty & the Chemehuevi Waterfowl Posse p.s. ONLY 100 MORE HUNTING DAYS LEFT!!!

Havasu 10-19-2005 15:47
Sunny & Clear, High Winds – Over 70 Degrees
Hay Ho To All Waterfowlers, My Son Rio and I are bouncing off the
walls!!! Marsh Madness begins this friday morning at 5:54. What a
wonderful 25 years it’s been for me in this amazing lil’ refuge. Last
season was made most memorable with the joy of watching my Jr.
hunters Rio and dear frind Jared E. On the afternoon of Dec.21st they
harvested their 1st ducks(Redheads & Ring-necked) of their budding
hunting lives. They now join me and those who hunted here before
us!!! I had the priviledge to hunt with these old-time waterfowler’s
of Havasu Lake. At this time I honor their memory by name. They are
Jude Belt, Roy Watson, Fred Kunkle, and Don Mitchell. I know they are
together at the #1 Blind in the Great Marsh in Sky. Our other
memorable highlight was X-mas Eve. In the pre-dawn light and a cold
howlin’ north wind blowin, Rio and I barreled into Eric’s Bay. We set
our spread and got the boat in the N/W corner hole. 2 minutes into
legal shooting time, with guns locked and loaded, 25 Mallards
descended upon us. Rio whacked a drake Mallard with his trusty #410
and #4 Bismuth. I took a clean double on drakes and the rest of the
mornin’ was a dream that memories are made of. Our harvest from the
heavens was Redheads, a drake Pintail, a King Can, a Robber(Balpaitus
Widgeonus), and more Mallards. Boy Santa delivered!!! At this time
there are not alot of ducks but the variety is what it’s all about
here. Lookin’ out my back door right now, there are about 250
Redheads, Bluebills, and Ringers rafted out in the front delta. 2
Honkers were paddling around with them earlier this mornin’. So I
close with, “It’s not how many you harvest, it’s how you feel about
the one’s that you do”!!! May God be your “Ultimate Guide” as you
head out afield. Be safe all season, Rusty and the Chemehuevi
Waterfowl Posse

CRIT 10-18-2005 21:45
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
Hunted Saturday & Sunday with my father, my 13 yr old son & my 14 yr old nephew. We got 12 mallards total & 1 widgeon. Should have had about 6 more mallards on Sunday but we all shot poorly. All local birds with a 1/4″ of fat on them. Worked the decoys & calls very well. My son took 3 of the mallards, (all drakes), Saturday with his 20 ga., so you know we had them feet down & backpeddaling! Just wish the birds would act like that all season , but I know better! Saw good numbers of gw teal & pintail, along with a few widgeon. Might go back again this weekend with just my son.

I read your guys report regarding crit. I hunted dove there for the past 15 years and every year its getting worse. This year was a shocker with the increase in fees. Still had a good time but its getting lil bit costly.
I haven’t seen much duck activity and the weather is still warm. The nights are cooling off a bit.
I have a place down in Cibola. I was there last weekend very lil activity there also. Checked all the spots that everyone hunts. Ill be up there this weekend. Im going to try to hit CRIT but I dont know if it will be worth it. But then again what else is there to do? Maybe do a lil fishing. Well if you guys hit crit this weekend I wish all of the best and may all your ducks wear jewelry.

hey rembo i`m familiar with the area well the fish farm had very little water in there last year as the y looked to be refilling some ponds or rain water had held this is interesting as this subject comes up every year and we have been working on the area constantly the bird count thruoghout the seasons starting about 15 years ago have steadily fallen no matter what happens up north but theyears before i can remember hardcore weather being in the salt lake area very very early to make that area work there has to be quiet no traffic and foot walk in only thats what i know that works ..

Salton Sea Man,
As far as the new wetlands you’re referring to at Crit…there has been no progress that I can see since last year. I have been told it’s ok to hunt there for the time being, but they haven’t decided if there will be hunting allowed once the project is completed. I’m assuming your referring to the new wetlands they are building off the main canal near the old fish farm. We looked around there last year, but the area had very little water so we didn’t try it. Other than that, there’s nothing new at CRIT, except for the increase in permit fees. I don’t know anything about the Yuma or Cibola areas. Good Luck.
Now to change the subject, I just returned from Canada Sept 25 & we had a great year! 298 geese & ducks for 5 guys in 3 days of hunting. Got 146 of those birds the first morning by 9 am. Limits of dark geese, ducks & 66 snows that morning…awesome!
We’ll be at Crit this Saturday for the duck opener.

anyone know if there’s been any change to the waterfowl hunting area, etc. for the CRIT reservation?….any flooded marshland like they were talking about adding last year?….I know that there’s an editoral written about dove hunting on the reservation this season, that was posted in Western Outdoors News, and it was very unkind to the new fees and treatment of hunters???…..Is there anything new on the cibola refuge for the duck hunter?…or has there been anything yet flooded on the california side for the hunter; as some people talked about last year?????….anyone ever hunt down by yuma successfully for geese?….thanks anyone for an opinion…
