Slow start today. I had ducks in the deeks before OST and then nothing. geese didn’t fly until 9. Shot a pair, then picked up.

Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 35-40 Degrees
Ventured out west from NE Arkansas to hunt rocky mountain waterfowl, an hour north of Denver, contacted Kevin Ayers of Ponderosa Outfitters an experienced caller with all full body goose decoys, in a comfortable pit located in a harvested cornfield. Hunted on Monday the 20th. My son SFC Paul Kopecky and I got 5 geese in a morning of hunting. surprising amount of geese around the Denver area. highly recommend this guide and outfitter. 11 dollars a day for a daily licence for out of state hunters is a deal

Cloudy, Snow Flurries – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
It’s been slow. Warmed up and all the ponds have reopened.

Today we did good. I shot a limit in Gaddys and widgens. My son got 2 of each. geese didn’t fly until noon, of course we had pulled everything by then. Got buzzed by two flocks of teal as we were leaving.

Merry Christmas all.

Snuck away for a quick hunt on the platte…
hiked a 1/2 mile from the truck, set out about 2dz floating mallards, a handful of fullbody mallards and 7 honker floaters. Put the spinner out turned it on, no more than got to shore and killed a hen mallard (oops) Looked up spinner somehow didnt take the charge from the charger last night and died w/in 10 minutes. forgot all my calls in the truck… Had 1 other mallard circle a few minutes later, thats all i saw in the form of mallards ALL DAY! We even sat til 1pm waiting for the honkers to come back to water after being in the fields, they didnt come back til after noon and went straight to the park in fort morgan w/out giving us a look. All the honkers have been there a while it seems, as they head from point A to point B and nowhere else. In need of some cold weather i believe. Heading back to minnesota for the holidays, wont post again probably til after the new year.
Merry Christmas to all!!

Anybody out there hunting in this state!?!?

platte river 12-11-2010 19:47

went up for the past 4 days scouted and hunted all over from Greeley all the way to julesberg, shooting a few birds along the way. Lots of birds around but go from there roost spots which cant be hunted to their fields and are tough to get permission on most but most farmers i talked to were very friendly and would allow hunting if not leased up. As of today that whole area from fort morgan to julesberg is absolutely filthy w/ dark geese. Driving back along 76 was pretty hairy pulling my enclosed trailer in all the crazy crazy wind!!! I had to come back for work today, but it will be interesting to see what comes after this storm. Hoping for fresh birds and everything to freeze up to hunt the rivers.
Also, I was very very surprised to see the lack of hunting pressure midweek on public swa’s. That is great!
Get out there and good luck guys!

well, i will be headed to the platte it looks like tomorrow and maybe all the way through the weekend. Anybody been huntin’ up there!? i came through on 76 2 weeks ago now and there were a ton of birds (mallards, dark geese, w/ a some snows mixed in) headed to the fields to feed. Did not hunt was just passing through.
Most stuff is leased up, up that way i hear, is this true? The days of knocking on a farmers door and getting permission is over…!?!? I guess its just a little tough to chew on, but i will be heading that way to check it out! I may have to learn the hard way.

Also, there has to be more than a couple people on this website from co hunting, yet not a lot of posts..?

mostly scouted, did little hunting followed the arkansas river from pueblo to kansas border 12-07-2010 18:05

I scouted from rocky ford swa east all the way to the kansas border over the last few days. Saw many flocks of migrating snows, and quite a few canadas as well. hunted rocky ford on friday had some groups of canadas work (coming off a gravel pit south of the river, going back and forth between there and holbrook) had only one group of 40 or so mallards working when a guy coyote hunting decided to shoot his rifle at the flock that was about 40 yards out coming in on a string….i was so mad.
headed east from there, checked out john marten res. tons and tons of snow geese and a pile of ducks….up until the day i went to hunt it, shallow water froze and the few ducks that were still there wanted nothing to do w/ me.
Put on many miles hiking in the granada swa and saw 4 mallards total. did kick up 3 pheasants.
overall, was kind of disappointed w/ the number of ducks seen. I did have all of my full body goose dekes w/ and pulling the enclosed trailer. How are the farmers in these areas about giving permission to hunters!?

I am in the process of moving to colorado from minnesota and trying to figure out this hunting out here is quite the task.
I will probably be headed to the platte to try and figure out some area up there next, although i didnt wanna have to deal w/ a ton of hunters. I guess i will have to deal w/ it…

Arctic Blast – Below Zero
I haven’t posted here in a while. T-day started out a -1. By sunrise -14. It was painful. A lot of birds first light but with the cold and chasing decoys down the river I’m sad to say I never fired a shot. by 8:30 I had had enough.

Skipped Friday had to work, went Sat and Sun. Actually did fair. 40 degree turn around. Ended up with 6 ducks and the first goose of the season. And pick up someone’s field deek that got away. 6 more and I’ll be even. LOL
