I did a waterfowl survey flight over all water bodies in northeastern Idaho yesterday. Snake River (N. and S. Fork), Teton River (N. and S. Fork), Mud lake, Market Lake, Island Park Res, Sheridan Res, Ashton Res, Buffalo River. I saw over 10,000 ducks and geese. Most the birds are in areas with little or no access. If the area does not have boat access (between diversion dams, etc.) it is loaded w/ waterfowl. Long spans of river with private surrounding are holding 100’s of greenheads and honkers.
Too bad nobody talks on this field report. I have some great information for people that would just ask.

I am looking some seriouse goose hunters. I am going to start a goose club. We want to find some hunter that like to hunt together for the love of hunting geese the way that we love to. we don’t have the acess to the land we all need to have for good goose hunting and fun hunting together. I want to make this affodable for the goose hunters that don’t make millions. We are looking for hunters that might have acess to land or land as a group we might be able to access between minidoka dam and mountian home. i am looking forward to hearing form you all. i am looking forward to hearing from you guys so we can have a meeting in the spring. we need to see the flight pattern in the peek of the season so we know what field to try and get ahold of. we will use the membership dues for payment on leases for land owners. Ducks died of fungal infection
State and federal officials have confirmed that about 2,500 mallard ducks found dead southeast of Burley, died of an acute fungus infection.
The official cause of death is acute aspergillosis, a respiratory tract infection caused by a fungus commonly found in soil, dead leaves, moldy grain, compost piles, or in other decaying vegetation.
Test results from University of Idaho’s Caine Veterinary Teaching Center in Caldwell confirmed the presence of the fungus in tissue samples taken from the ducks this week. The results confirm preliminary diagnoses at two other wildlife health labs in Washington and Wisconsin.
The fungus can cause respiratory tract infections in birds that inhale the spores. The most likely source of the spores for these ducks is moldy grain, but no specific site has been found as the source.
Waterfowl die-offs are common and many happen in the United States every year. During the past six months, 16 events each involving more than 1,000 birds occurred. Testing for diseases is a routine part of the investigation of waterfowl die-offs.
The first dead ducks were found by a hunter Friday, December 8, along Land Creek Springs near Oakley. Idaho Department of Fish and Game was notified, and conservation officers found 10 dead ducks near the spring and along the stream’s edge.
Officers returned to the area on December 10 to find more than 500 dead ducks. By the end of clean-up operations Thursday morning, the number had grown to about 2,500. Though a small proportion of the duck population in Idaho or the United States, the number of dead birds in this die-off is unusual for Idaho.
Officials initially considered it unlikely that avian influenza was the cause of this die-off. Widespread testing of waterfowl in fall of 2006 has not found the highly pathogenic avian influenza strain H5N1 in the United States.
Tissue samples from dead birds were not consistent with avian influenza, but as a precaution samples were sent to U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin for testing.
Results from the first group of ducks tested confirmed that they did not have the highly pathogenic avian influenza strain H5N1 that is currently of concern in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Results from additional tests are pending.
The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service helped with the investigation of this outbreak.
Hunters are advised not to kill any obviously sick animals, including ducks and other waterfowl.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
New birds moved into the area. I saw a couple hundred mallards and a few pintails on the River. Shot 4 last night. I little decoy shy but calling was the ticket!

Hunted the River on Saturday. Shot 1 wounded goose and 3 of us shot 6 mallards. We broke ice and the birds decoyed very well. Just not that many ducks left. Tons of geese but they did not want to be where we were. VERY cold now. The river was froze and then it opened up. Now it is locking back up. Still no snow so the geese are sticking around as long as there are fields to eat in.

Cant say i know where the birds are but we did manage to jump some ditches and my 13 year old did get one nice big northern drake. There are still lots of geese using the area just have to do your homework.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 10-20 Degrees – Open Water
Well we went down to the river yesterday and 3 of us killed 12 mallards and that was it. Where have all of the birds gone that were here last week. We had to make every shot count. Went out for geese today and we killed 12 3 man limit in 2hr. But it was cold!!!!!! We were in a fiends field south of bellevue. Think we are going to go out for ducks again in the am before work at niagra and see what happens

Twin Falls area hunters: Hey I don’t know if u guys heard about those ducks dying down there or not, but I figured I would post something so u were aware of it. I guess they found 2000 dead mallards around Oakley. They appear to have died from some sort of bacteria and hunters have been warned not to eat any of the ducks in the area. You can read more about it on the Fish and Game website under news releases. Hopefully it is just a concentrated area of birds, but who knows. Good luck and be safe out there.

Saw a ton of birds on Saturday. NO TAKERS. (shot 4 ducks on passing shots) Group after group flying high in both directions. Heard they were killing a bunch on the Snake towards Brownlee. Looks like more open water is making it tuff again. Had some freinds do OK on the Boise near Star.
