I had that problem at Greenhead a couple of weeks ago. Lots of teal in flocks of 3-15 and very few drakes. I really try not to shoot hens, but sometimes it happens. Spoonies are fair game…
Glad you were able to get out. How were the roads today?

Tried area where saw widgeon working on 12/11. Never saw a duck until 11:45, but then fairly decent flight thereafter. Ducks sitting on the ice and in pockets they’ve kept open, but most never moved the entire day. Shot six (4 widgeon, 1 sprig, and 1 greenhead). Plenty of dark geese moving around, trying to find something to eat, but none ventured near me. Swans are really staying tight – vast majority never moved from their open holes in the Sink, and those that did simply flew from one opening to another. All ducks shot were in poor shape. It looks like they haven’t eaten since it began to freeze up earlier in the week. Barring a warm up, believe they will be leaving soon.
For anyone who is still posting, could you take the time to help with a survey? For the second weekend in a row, the gender of ducks flying was about 90/10, with the drakes hard to find. I had groups of widgeon, sprig, and mallards up to nine birds each with not a male among them. Even the spoonies were nearly all female. My question is: Are all duck hunters practicing voluntary restraint, and shooting only drakes? If not, I’d love to know the biological reason why the vast majority of ducks flying around the Humboldt Sink are female. Please post and let me know who is or is not shooting hens. Thanks.

Afternoon shoot at the Sink. Scouted an area that had mallards working, and set up at about 1:45. Pretty decent flight. Shot three greenheads and one gadwall, but could have limited if hens had been on my menu. Seemed like every duck that worked the decoys was a suzie, and one hen sprig lit in the decoys. Noticed that farther out in the flooded salt cedar, most of the ducks were widgeon, and had I had more time, would have moved to mix the bag up further. Several flocks of geese also moving around, and got a double out of one bunch that got too close. If anyone needs to fill a swan tag and doesn’t mind a pretty good walk – there are still thousands of birds on the Sink. Many seem to move from the Sink to Humboldt Lake, and back again.

hunted Fri. the 2nd. Was set up around 1130 in the middle of big water, had a limit of widgeon, teal, and one drake sprig with leg jewlery by 3:30. Just happen to pick the one area ducks were flying into. Paddled back to the truck feeling blessed….It was my first banded duck!

Hunted Sunday AM. Walked in up in the NW corner and had to bust ice on the way in and out. Set up before sunset on a point in an area where I had jumped ducks on the way in. Got four ducks(2 Gadwall & 2 Spoonies) and one Honker. Packed it in around eight o’clock. Not much flying at that point. I would suspect it will remain frozen out there for the rest of the year. There was about a 1/4 of an inch on the way out and its supposed to get cold the next few nights. Question: Where to hunt after the water freezes?

I think those bigger ducks were probably Gadwall. When I was out there last week, there was a pile of them out there and I didn’t see much else.

I think the birds are there, but not during shooting time.Last week I hunted till the last minute,shooting a limit of teal.That was the only birds flying.On the way out a few thousand birds (mostly bigger ducks) got off the sump and spread out all over the club.Most of the birds are moving after dark.A little ice on the sump might change that.

Nice day to be out on the pond, the wind was really blowing. Had a good shoot and ended with 5 teal and 1 widgeon. It took the better part of 5 hours. There just does not seem to be as many birds at Greenhead this year, as in the past. I am curious to see the bird count #s. All in all my partner (the dog) and I had a fun day of ditching work.
