September 4, 2002 – Migration Update

This week marked the return of waterfowl season for many across North America. As the early goose season got underway and the first of the regular waterfowl seasons opened in the northern reaches of the continent Waterfowler.com also welcomes back Adam Benker (pictured above), the winner of the Waterfowler.com MEMBER-GET-A-MEMBER Argentina Adventure Sweepstakes.

Hello, folks, and, as always, welcome to Waterfowler.com.

The latest in the ranks of members Waterfowler.com has sent around the world in pursuit of their passion for web feet and wing-shooting Adam, a resident of Corcoran Minnesota, got his name in the drawing by giving a gift membership to his brother, who Adam credits with getting him into waterfowling. Welcome back Adam, and we look forward to hearing of you adventure in the coming weeks.

And now, on to the Migration report.

The holiday weekend brought with it the chance for many waterfowlers to get back into the field. Success for early goose season hunters was mixed. Fog in many states along the Atlantic Flyway made conditions tough, with the big birds “there and gone” in the bat of an eye.

Waterfowlers in the Mississippi and Central Flyways fared better with birds holding to their patterns and decoying readily in areas where hunting pressure was lower. Hunters from the northern prairie also report good concentrations of ducks visiting their spreads during the opener.

In Alaska and portions of Canada the opening weekend of the regular waterfowl season looks to have been a good one. Cooler temperature had the birds active and eager to join their plastic friends. This week kicks off early teal season for several states. Scouting reports from southern Illinois to Missouri tell of a steady build up of blue-wings. With a fairly stable weather pattern in store for the next few days hunters should expect the birds to hold in the areas they have found them and their numbers to only increase as the days go by.

Yes, it looks like we made it at last. And even for those of us who have a few more weeks to wait before we get our chance it is somehow comforting to know that somewhere someone is sitting in the blind, eyes trained on the skies, a loyal dog at their side, waiting for their prayers and wishes to come true. Until next week, good luck, good shooting and may your early season build memories that will last a lifetime.
