Hey Guys — Anybody out there?? Anybody getting that itchy feeling, looking forward to the cool (sometimes) of Fall?? Hope you’re Summer activites includes some good duck hunting improvement type activites, like; blind improvement, decoy cleaning or re-painting, practicing on calling, some trips to the trap or skeet range, working with your dog, early season scouting, or just looking at maps, checking notes from last season to see what really worked well or not, watching some videos or computer programs that help with bird identification, etc. You know the routine. You love it. So do I. Our season is almost here again, it’s like being re-born…..Good luck and CUL.. JOE

Anybody doing any looking around? I do it all the time, when I can. Water is looking nice, and looks like lots of geese have their new little families already, dodging the predators. Hope they survive all that’s thrown at them, except a little steel in the fall or winter. Utah Waterfowl Association did a nice duck nest project about a month ago out in Turpin area of Fmntn Bay..If any of you hunts there you’ll see the;m, as we put out over 100 hen houses, based on the Delta Waterfowl idea. Hope that works, as the predator problem inFarmington Bay area is really bad, not giving the hens or eggs a chance. If it works, we’ll do more. All duck and goose hunters in Utah should join Utah Waterfowl Association. Not expensive, and everything is done for Utah. To join, call Jeff Richards @ 292-8542…CUL..keep scouting, JOE

Hey, anybody out there?? I hope you guys will come back sometime to maybe share an experience or two, maybae something that really worked well or something that just plain didn’t. — The goofy weather changes really screwed up my last couple weeks duck hunting, and then the last 2 extra weeks of goose hunting didn’t amount to much (harvest wise) either. Like I’ll always say, it’s always great to get out. I learned that you’ll probably get more shooting without your dog, but you’ll probably have 25 to 35% wounding loss just like the average waterfowler throughout the country. (every 10 birds you bring home, 2 or 3 are left out there wounded to die) My dog made a huge difference on the birds I shot, I just have more training to do so I can take her along on all hunt situations..I learned to not waste my time or shells on an overhead goose with a duck load..I found a new area near Willard Bay this past season, and hope to scout it out more next season..I learned that little pineapple chunks go really well with each bite of duck or goose…. Man, I could keep going..Overall I had a great waterfowling season, and hope you guys did too…CUL –JOE

Hey Kurt et al — Way to go with your pup! They sure add a new dimmension to waterfowl hunting, as this was my first year with my lab, and also her first hunting year. She did well, but definitely not a polished retriever yet…we’ve got time to work on that..but she did retrieve 13 doves for me, 2 snipe, 23 ducks, and 4 geese. I’m still trying to figure out a portable stand for herwhen I’m standing in 1 or 2 feet of water, any ideas???? 0 ducks past 2 weeks, they just took off in this area of GSL, Hope to get into another goose or 2 yet, but only time will tell…good luck!! Hunted my guts out on the final day of Duck Season, seen alot of birds these birds have been hunted hard. Had a few groups respound to a call came home with 2 Mallard Drakes could have shot a limit of goldeneye but you need to be a hard liquor drinker to handle goldeneye when it comes to table fodder. This season was TOUGH HUNTING in the Uintah Basin area. We can always hope for a better season next year.
The bright spots for me this season came on Youth Hunt when I watched my rookie son limit out on Mallard Drakes. And watching my Lab Puppy turn into a reliable gun dog in one season, her final retrieve this season she had to swim across the Green River and make a blind Retrieve on a bird that had landed in heavy cover on the opposite bank. Not bad for a first year dog.
Good Luck on Geese the next 2 weeks.
Kurt

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 40-45 Degrees
Hey guys -If you stick to it long enough, once in a whileyou hit it just right…just couple days ago I set up early for ducks and 5 goose floaters in a small thawed pond, and at 0730 my goose hunt was done..One nice flock of 11 or 12 came over the tullies, saw my dekes and after a few toots they came right in and about 30 yds out and 8 feet high, 2 shots and 3 came down.My dog was thrilled that I finally did something right, and she had a great time retrieving her first geese. I was mostly thrilled by watching her, and revelled in our success for a spell before thinking of how hard it was going to be to pack out 3 big geese, plus 1 widgeon. I ended up dragging them out the mile and a half like a deer, with lots of breaks on the way. Labor of love, you bet!! I’ve never shot a limit of geese, so this was quite the landmark for me. One got plucked, and it’s going in my new turkey frier. I’ll let you know how that turns out later. Birds were 7.5, 9.5, and 11.0 lbs…Hope they’re around for awhile.. Good luck, CUL– JOE

Farmington Bay 01-03-2006 23:07
Cloudy, Rain & Thunderstorms – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
We took the airboat out to Farmington Bay on Monday. We have never been there before so we just set up close by the large rafts of ducks. The birds were flying like crazy. We had trouble hitting them because the waves were rocking our coffins so hard, and the rain was pelting our faces. There are still quite a few birds in the area. We hunted from 10am to 12pm, and the birds flew steadily the whole time. We finally had to leave when the water became too deep. I hope I can get out there 1 more time before the season ends.

Take care and keep your face down, Braden

Hey guys — warmer temps have definitely changed the ducks habits again, as they are no longer in previous areas..probably out in the ‘big water’ again, so I would imagine that air boaters are doing really well again.Kicked up a few singles yesterday, shot 2 drakes, one with a band simply marked with the number 384 on it. Nothing else, and the Laurel, Md bird band people don’t have any info on it..Anybody here have any ideas??
Anyhow, hope you guys are finding a few birds around, we’re running out or time! (again) Seems the season just gets going, and then it’s over way too quick. Maybe the extended goose season will work for all of us…here’s hoping!! CUL — JOE

Hey Silverkitten — why don’t you apply to be one of Utah’s volunteer field rep;orters..You can keep doing some reporting like you have been, plus you’ll get your membership free.. I’ve heard some guys say other sites are being used more, but I don’t have time to check looking all over, so I’m planning on staying here, hope you do too..as you may remember, we used to have 6 reporters, so jump in…….
I hit Willard Bay area a couple weeks ago and did OK, but I was informed that I was there about 2 hours too late (got there 3 o’clock) guess I hit the tail end of the days movement. It was still fun and my dog got 3 nice retrieves. Friend and I hit Layton area and Kaysville marshes last week and did pretty good on mallards and teal. Maxie did 7 retrieves that day including 1 snipe..So she’s been doing pretty good..She’s in heat right now, so another week or so before I’ll take her out again. (poor little emotional girl!)
Got out this A.M. to the Kaysville marshes. Friend got 2 mallards and a teal, I got a mallard and a nice, almost 10 lb honker, my first of the season. That was fun.. I was just set up for ducks with a spinner and 5 dekes, and I think this 10-bird flock was intrigued by the spinner, as I had no goose call or goose dekes, but I did manage to squeeze in 2 goose loads just before they got to me..about 25 yds, 20 ga. Kent Impact #3. 1 shot just killed this goose. That stuff is potent. I’ve used the Impact in 12 ga. also, and have busted bones at 60+ yds on geese..It’s good stuff. Not sure how this warmer weather will affect our jump shooting…may have to change tactics again…Hope to hear how you guys are doing…good luck and CUL — JOE
