Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 10-20 Degrees – Open Water
not seeing many ducks this late season on the Ohio River. Hopefully next weekend may have new birds, but not hopefull. One mallard bagged at appx 3:00 pm. Nothing moved prior to that. I did see two other small flocks afterward.

The goose I bagged last week was banded in Hastings, Ontario this past summer. Twenty plus miles north of the northern shore of Lake Ontario.

Cloudy, Winds Calm – 10-20 Degrees – Open Water
Still not any new ducks in the area but lots of geese.
I missed several shots at blacks and mallards and had several groups flare on me (never figured out why) but managed to take a greenhead and two geese. One of the geese had a leg band.

Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – Below Zero
Had open water (spring fed) – -tons of geese and a few ducks on it – cold fog coming off the water – FORGOT MY GUN!
I’m almost glad. The truck thermometer said -8 degrees. I already put the gun in the truck for tomorrow.

Scouting both zones 01-03-2008 18:05
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 10-20 Degrees – Ice
Scouted a few spots in each zone. Birds are concentrated on open water but there doesn’t seem to be many migrants. About the same # of birds I saw in the area all year.
Gonna hit ’em in the morning anyway.

Mostly Cloudy, No Precipitation – 35-40 Degrees
Saw 100’s of geese setting in on other hunters about 3/4 mile away. A few gave me a pass after they saluted them and I managed to bring one down with a looong shot.
Only saw to mallards all morning. A pair buzzed me about 9am and I smacked down the drake. No daylight flight.
Hope the cold brings them in.

Hittin’ it tomorrow myself but scouting hasn’t turned up much. Hoping tonights rain floods a cornfield beside a creek I hunt. If not, I’ll set up on the creek and hope for the best.

Cloudy, Winds Calm – 40-45 Degrees
Did a lot of riding around this AM — saw only one grp. of hunters on the river, no one field hunting.
Saw one small flock of mallards and one grp. of Canadas (about 30-40 birds). Interestingly, both groups were right next to the road, naturally in a safety zone….
Not as many geese at Harpers Ferry as I usually see, but a lot below the big bridge. Saw somewhat dismayed by the low river conditions — will have to use the canoe tomorrow instead of my jon boat.

I have noticed more hunters on the Ohio River each year. I do think Waterfowling is catching on in the “duck desert”. Not as many ducks the past couple years compared to 2003/04 season. Those large concentrations of duck aren’t visible in this area. I suspect that the ethonal boom, and more farmers in central Ohio growing corn have diverted more waterfowl to those areas. I have nothing to base that on, it’s just that a drive to Columbus has revealed huge expanse of fields planted in corn. I suspect somewhere in a corn field in Ohio, thousands of mallards and geese are feasting. Hopefully that will equate to more ducks in this area eventually if winter ever comes back to WV and moves them.
It was great to see another WV post. I also love high water and floods as it relates to duck hunting here. It seems like ducks of all varities show up overnight when the Ohio River back water creeps in.

Friday Dec 21st, 2007
1 goose and one mallard early. High water areas holding back water pools have now receded. River still too much current to hunt though.
I have friends coming in to hunt a few days after Christmas, but weather doesn’t look promising. Full moon will keep them feeding at night I think. Mid morning is about it until weather moves in.
Honestly not seeing large concentrations of duck.
Hopefully my next post will be brighter
