Doing my homework, scouting local farms and lakes to ensure that this weekend youth hunt for my nephew is a good one. Hope cooler weather keeps the birds on the move. Ontelaunee lake has lots of wood ducks flying, very little honkers. Time will tell. Will post results.

Geese took off about 06:45….about 50 of them.

Buffleheads everywhere. Mallards stayed high and flared the decoys. Managed to take a few Greater Scaup. Goose hunters on the other side of the lake sounded like they did well. Good shootin’ all around. Stayed out till gear and guns iced up….about 2 1/2 hours.

Not much info. to share about the early season. Guys I’ve talked to are saying to avoid Lake Stoneycreek…..too many hunters and pressure.

Somerset Lake is drained. Not sure about Indian or Lake Stonycreek, but would imagine the same.

Saw lots of ducks on Quemahoning Dam.

Put in two decent early goose hunts and that was about it. Focused on some archery this year.

I’ll try to update with some late season info.

Hunted the Wed. opener with some friends. We were in a cut corn field. Not many birds flying and it got warm quick! We managed 4 for the morning and should have had a few more had we been shooting better.
Went out again Saturday morning.Much better day temperature wise but did not see a goose in the air all morning. Still nice to be out!! “G”

Geese were spooky. Hunted with a few others and managed 9 birds, 3 w/ bands.

Lots of birds, but they were very hesitant to come in. Only 1/2 of the flocks landed.

Takin’ a break until the late season.

Last post/report until more activity on this site or something picks up here.

Hunted Labor Day and took a few birds. Geese were traveling in big groups and we worked to pull small groups out of the main flock. All birds responded well to calling and settled in nicely. Probably saw ~150 birds total in less than one hour of hunting. A few groups came back on the come-back call.

Local birds are moving around in cut oats. Hunted with a group of guys opening day and entertained 3 flights over a small spread…..took 17 total in the evening hunt.

Hunting activity has picked up from non-locals…aka “aliens” from outside the county. They were shooting some nearby flocks that were penciled in to be hunted over Labor Day.

Nothing but ice. The geese found some open water somewhere and got off the lake late……after 08:00. Only a few ducks in the area and they are having trouble finding open water. Everything is frozen and covered with 8-10″ of snow. Good luck finding open or moving water.

Opening day – 2nd season:
Geese started off the lake @ 07:15 and didn’t quit until 08:00.

Mallards were up before the geese, but hidden in the fog. They were back and forth from the field to the lake all morning.

Shooting was limited due to visibility, but the birds were active. I hung in there until 09:00 and then threw in the towel…..snow changed to heavy rain/wind.

Got out this morning with a friend for a few hours before the storm moved in.The birds flew around 7:30-8:00 and we managed to pull a few in.Ended up with three but should have had more. Not a lot of activity as far as the geese were concerned but we did see several hundred ducks at daybreak. Some really large flocks of what looked to me to be teal heading west from the Morgantown area. Did not hear any other shooting and not very much corn cut at this point.

Lots of resident birds around but it has’nt taken long for them to figure out the game. Probably 500- 1000 birds hanging in the management area and the unhuntable sgl 214. Heard zero shooting from PA while on the OH side hunting teal Sat. am. Birds are working some fields in the area but its a lot of trouble for a 1 bird limit! Someday the PGC will figure out these are’nt SJB geese at this time of year and get a realistic limit for the local pop. at Pymie.

Opener wasn’t much this year. Resident birds are harassing local fields as usual, but hard to track and pattern. I’m laying low and scouting until the migration starts moving some new birds around. These locals are catching on to old tricks.

Shuttin’ ‘er down for the season. This will be the last post from the SW PA region.

Ducks were a joke this year…..not sure where they all got to. Early season geese was awesome and the regular season was decent. I have one or two more hunts left in me befoe the fat lady sings though. First born came on 12/26 and takes most of of my/our free time. I hope to prepare some decent waterfowl dishes for maple sugar season and get things lined up for next year. This year just kind of slipped by with a new house and baby. Better luck nect year, right?

Blue Marsh Lake 01-14-2008 16:23
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 25-30 Degrees – Ice
Hunted the lake Saturday morning for the last time this season. Other than mergansers we saw very few ducks and had no shooting. All in all the Pa. season was not very good for me.Just too warm. My jaunts down to Chincoteague have been very productive and I am finding I prefer to make the 3 1/2 hour drive to gun down there.
The season always ends much too soon. I would love to see the powers that be delay our regular opener 2 weeks and run it 2 weeks later but I guess that is wishful thinking.
Anyone have any snow goose reports from Middle Creek? “g”

Hunted the rivers the last 2 weekends, in 2 different spots. Last weekend was a bust on the ducks, but we did manage a deer with the flintlock off one of the islands. Yesterday we hunted the evening and ended up with 5 geese and a nice greenhead. Tons of birds but those big flocks can be a real handful to call and decoy. This weather should finish us for ducks this year but the RP goose season should still be strong. Good Luck!

Lake Arthur, PA 12-25-2007 21:47
Cloudy, High Winds – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
It’s just what I was afraid of, no ducks! Hunted Lake Arthur Christmas eve morning on the backside of a front with a 20 degree temperature drop, snow flurries, overcast, low pressure system, and no ducks. I’m afraid they’ve headed South. We hunted from daylight to 11:00 am, and only saw two ducks, an hour apart. I thought that with the 25 m.p.h. winds, they might be sitting down somewhere, so I ran around the lake trying to see if I could find any sheltered back in a cove or something, and only ran up four more. I hunted late this morning and only saw three. I think we are probably done until next fall.

Do the world a favor, teach a kid to hunt.

Cloudy, High Winds – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
We hunted the Muddy Creek area of Lake Arthur this past Saturday morning, having to leave about 9am because of family obligations. Hunting out of a boat blind and only putting out a dozen decoys, we saw a few ducks, mostly teal and divers. The lake was frozen over last week, but melted because of a couple of days of 50+ temperatures. We did manage to bag a Gray duck (Gadwall), and a Ring Necked duck. both were shot coming into the decoys. There doesn’t appear to be too many ducks left up here because of the freezing weather we’ve had. I was also shocked to notice most of the big ducks seem to have already moved out. The lake is frozen over again, but it should thaw as a result of the warmer temperatures this week. We do have a small front moving into the area on Sunday night, so I’ll give ’em another try on Christmas eve and day. I’ll keep you posted as to the conditions and the results.

Gunned the marsh yesterday. No luck where we set up but we did some scouting for about two hours and did see quite the variety of birds. About 500 canadas must have roosted on the lake and there were about a hundred black ducks with them.Saw mallards, bluebills, goldeneye, assorted mergansers and dippers.Still learning alot about gunning divers. No other hunters on the lake at all.If anyone is ever interested in hooking up shoot me a PM.Looks like all the old gang here is prety much gone. There was some skim ice on parts of the lake so if you do get out be careful.Lost too many friends over the years during the season!! Hunt safe, “G”

Some golden-eyes around,as well as ringers, and of course thousands of geese. Nice front on Saturday, just not coming from a good direction to move alot of birds our way. Good Luck.

Gunned the marsh this morning. You know your hunting ducks when the sleet is stinging your face!!Great day to be out on the lake.We had a nice ,hot island breakfast around 4am and it was definitely the calm before the storm. Set up one group on the island with a mixed diver/puddler/goose spread while me and my cousin set out a diver rig and gunned from the boat blind. The morning started real slow but at around 7:45 it was like someone turned a switch on!We had bluebills all over the place and we even managed to drop a few. While we were out picking up birds the guys on the island had two drake cans buzz through but not a one of them was ready at the time! The weather turned miserable in short time so we packed it in.The rangers actually shut the park down as we were leaving.I had a blast and it was just great to be out!!!Haven’t had many chances so far this year due to work.Hunt safe, “g”

Shot a hen old squaw and common merg on Sun. 11/25. Should have been a better day but our shooting let us down just a bit. Real mixed bag around from bills to green-wings to golden-eyes to blacks to woodies, no kidding. I think the storm moved the divers out today/last night. Not many ducks around with very minimal shooting.

Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 45-50 Degrees
No new birds. All of the other birds are already shy and won’t come anywhere near shorelines.

Got to watch at least three hunter drive around the waterway and blow ducks calls out of their car windows at real ducks and decoys. Idiots.

Hey guys. Glad to hear your having some good luck with your duck action.
Just a suggestion for future reference, keep your hunting area to yourselves. Ugly things can happen if you start posting up too much info on where you hunt. Might want to keep your info very general in nature.
Good luck on the rest of your seasons.

Hunted until noon, 1 gadwall to show for it. Lots of ducks at dawn with steady action thru to 10:30. Lots of teal, ring-necks, and gadwall around but not to cooperative. One duck decoyed good and paid for it. Fired some warning shots at a flock of teal and a flock of gadwall that got to close on fly-bys. Maybe again Wed. .

Cloudy, Snow & Rain Mix – 40-45 Degrees
Only got an hour in yesterday. Furnace problems at the house….messing with hunting time.

Big storm blew in around 16:00 yesterday bringing heavy snow and sleet. I picked up and made it to the vehicle just in time before it really hit the fan.

Local waterways were loaded with buffleheads, hoods, common mergansers (lot of them and new to this body of water) and a bunch of other small groups of diving ducks hanging way out in the middle. The common mergansers were hanging in along the shoreline. Hoods and buffleheads were farther out.

Weather is looking favorable for saturday in SW PA. Good luck if you’re fortunate enough to get out.

Susq River 11-15-2007 13:02
Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – 45-50 Degrees
What a great opening day. The weather was perfect, just wish the river would have been a little higher so i wouldnt have had to drag the boat half way across the river before I could start it up this morning. I have a nice pair of mallards, and a pair of buffle heads that will end up getting mounted. Can wait to see what the rest of the weekend is like with the river slowly coming up.
Good luck to all waterfowlers that get out this weekend.

Cloudy, High Winds – 45-50 Degrees
Watched three good sized flocks of ducks come out of the refuge area headed for the fields to feed. This looks to be a promising season for our area.

Hunt safe and don’t waste what God has created for us to enjoy!

Went past a containment pothole today, the surface was covered with Mallards. There had to be two to three hundered birds. Things are looking good for the late season!
Good luck to all.
